An airport transfer in Abu Dhabi is shaped by one fact: the capital's main airport is not on the capital's island. Zayed International (AUH) lies about 30 km (19 mi) east of the city centre, on the road that also leads to Yas Island and, further on, to Dubai. Reaching the Corniche, Saadiyat Island or a hotel on the Al Maryah waterfront means a drive of roughly half an hour. Reaching Yas Island is shorter. Reaching Dubai is a different order of trip altogether, around 130 to 140 km.

This guide covers how to leave Zayed International, how the public bus, the metered taxi and a booked private car compare, and which one suits each kind of traveller. If a booked car is the right call, the booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay.

What is the best airport transfer in Abu Dhabi?

For most visitors with hotel luggage, a booked private car is the easiest airport transfer in Abu Dhabi: about 30 km to the city, roughly 25 to 40 minutes, a driver in arrivals and a fixed fare. A metered airport taxi suits a spontaneous arrival, and the bus suits a solo traveller with time.

The bus and the taxi are both legitimate, and we say so. The reason a booked car often wins here is distance and time of day. Thirty kilometres is a long taxi ride at the end of a long flight, and the roads around the airport fill up at the evening peak. A car you have already booked removes the queue, the negotiation and the question of which rank is the right one.

Zayed International at a glance

AUH has been transformed since 2023. Terminal A, the large new building and the Etihad hub, officially opened on 31 October 2023 and is the main passenger terminal. Older travel guides still describe a first-generation set of terminals, so check the one on your ticket. When you book with us, the confirmation names the terminal and the meeting point for your flight number.

The airport sits beside the E10 highway, which connects the capital to Dubai and Al Ain. That is useful to know for planning because the same stretch of road feeds Yas Island, Saadiyat Island and the Dubai route. Visit Abu Dhabi describes the airport as a short distance from Abu Dhabi's main destinations and from Dubai, and notes that a Visitor Information Centre in the arrivals hall near the taxi stand can help with transport. Its airport guide also lists the AUH Express, a coach that runs round the clock between the airport and the Ibn Battuta bus station in Dubai.

How far is Abu Dhabi Airport from your hotel?

These are typical road distances and off-peak drive times. Allow more at the evening peak.

  • Yas Island (Yas Marina Circuit, Ferrari World, Yas Mall): about 10 to 15 minutes. Yas Marina Circuit itself says the circuit is about 10 minutes from the airport by taxi.
  • Abu Dhabi city centre and the Corniche: about 30 km (19 mi), 25 to 40 minutes.
  • Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: about 30 km, 25 to 35 minutes, depending on the approach road.
  • Saadiyat Island (museums and beach resorts): about 40 km, 35 to 50 minutes.
  • Al Maryah Island and Al Reem Island: about 35 km, 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Dubai (Downtown, Marina, DXB): about 130 to 140 km (81 to 87 mi), 1 h 15 to 1 h 45 on the E11, longer at rush hour. See Abu Dhabi Airport to Dubai.

For hourly bookings once you are in the city, a car with driver in Abu Dhabi keeps the same car and driver with you for a day.

The airport's own taxi and limousine page states that its airport taxis run 24/7 with metered fares paid by cash or card, and that accessible and larger vehicles are available. Pre-booked ride-hail pickups use a separate zone in the arrivals car park, signed "Ride Hailing". The taxi estimate is the tourism board's own figure, not a fixed tariff, and the meter governs.

When the bus or taxi is the better choice

Public transport in Abu Dhabi is sensible if you are travelling alone with one bag, staying near a bus stop and not in a hurry. The airport taxi is a good option for spontaneous trips: the rank is in the arrivals area, the meter runs, and you do not need a booking. We would use a taxi in these cases:

  • You do not know where you are staying yet.
  • Your flight lands at a quiet hour and the queue is short.
  • You are travelling alone and want the lowest-cost door-to-door option that is not a bus.

If you take a taxi, ask the driver to use the meter and wait for the receipt. The tourism board's estimate is a guide, not a promise.

When a private airport transfer in Abu Dhabi is the better choice

A booked private car beats the alternatives when the trip has more moving parts:

  • Three or more travellers, or heavy luggage. The Luxury SUV seats up to 6 with 5–6 large bags. The Executive Sprinter seats up to 12 with 12 bags.
  • Children. Child seats are on request: say at booking whether you need an infant, toddler or booster seat.
  • Late arrivals. The car is booked against your flight and does not depend on a rank.
  • Tight business schedules. A fixed fare, a named driver and a confirmed pickup time make planning predictable.
  • An onward trip to Dubai. The same driver or partner can take you on to Dubai in one booking; the road is long enough to make a private car worthwhile for two or more.
  • Privacy. A name-board pickup with an alias is available on request, and A chauffeur will not photograph you or mention your trip online, and NDAs can be signed on request.

Pickup at Zayed International: where we meet you

Every airport pickup includes flight tracking, so the driver follows the actual landing time. We allow 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing, 30 after a domestic one, and the driver waits inside arrivals with a name board on request. You will not need to find a rank or a ride-hail zone. The details of the meeting point are in your confirmation.

If you want a faster path through the terminal, a paid Abu Dhabi airport meet and greet can be added to the booking. We keep the roles separate so that the escort handles the terminal and the driver handles the road.

Yas Island, the Grand Prix and the events calendar

Abu Dhabi's biggest travel week is the Formula 1 season finale at Yas Marina Circuit. The 2026 weekend is scheduled for 4 to 6 December, and race week fills hotels and slows the roads around Yas Island. A pre-booked car with a fixed pickup time is the sensible way to cover the short but busy airport-to-circuit run. Our Abu Dhabi Grand Prix transport guide covers pickup points, shuttles and timing. For other events across the region, see the events hub.

Abu Dhabi to Dubai and beyond

Most visitors to the UAE see both emirates. If you land in Abu Dhabi and sleep in Dubai, read Abu Dhabi Airport to Dubai. If you land in Dubai and stay in Abu Dhabi, the mirror guide is Dubai Airport to Abu Dhabi and the Dubai airport page is Dubai airport transfer from DXB. The Middle East hub links Doha, Riyadh and the western Saudi corridor. Sightseeing in the capital is often built around the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Qasr Al Watan, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and the Saadiyat Cultural District, all of which Visit Abu Dhabi lists among its top attractions; an hourly car stays with you between them.

Entry rules and travel advice

Canadian passport holders get a free tourist visa on arrival valid for 90 days within a 180-day period, and need a passport valid for six months beyond arrival, according to the Government of Canada. That page, last updated in August 2026, advises Canadians to avoid non-essential travel to the UAE because of the regional security situation. Airlines have also altered Gulf schedules during 2026. We do not give security assessments; check your government's page and your airline before you book.

Booking, vehicles and cancellation

In Abu Dhabi the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner, and the Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto books, confirms, supports and invoices it, 24/7. Every partner car is within four model years of new, except Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach, allowed up to seven. Executive Sedan and First Class Sedan carry up to 3; Luxury SUV up to 6; Executive Sprinter up to 12; see the fleet. Water and phone charging are in most vehicles.

Cancellation is counted from the scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours' notice, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10%; 48 hours or less, 50%; 24 hours or less or no-show, 100%. For large events the cut-off can differ, and the confirmation says so. For more questions, see the FAQ or the airport transfers hub.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Abu Dhabi Airport from the city?

About 30 km (19 mi) east of the city centre. The drive to the Corniche is usually 25 to 40 minutes. Yas Island is closer, about 10 to 15 minutes, and Dubai is roughly 130 to 140 km away.

How much is a taxi from Abu Dhabi Airport to the city?

Visit Abu Dhabi cites about AED 70–80 into town, including the minimum flag fall, as of 2026. Airport taxis are metered, so traffic and the destination change the final fare. The booker shows our fixed all-in fare for your exact trip before you pay.

Is there a bus or train from Abu Dhabi Airport?

Public buses stop just outside arrivals, and an AUH Express coach runs between the airport and Dubai's Ibn Battuta bus station. We do not state a passenger train service at the airport; check the Darb app or the airport's website for the current timetable.

Which terminal does my flight use at Abu Dhabi?

Terminal A, which opened in 2023, handles the airport's flights, and Etihad's hub is there. Older guides refer to different terminals. Enter your flight number in the booking and the confirmation names the terminal and meeting point.

Can you meet me inside arrivals?

Yes. A name-board meet and greet inside arrivals is available on request, with an alias on the board if you prefer privacy. We track your flight and allow 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing.

How do I get from Abu Dhabi Airport to Dubai?

By road, about 130 to 140 km and roughly 1 h 15 to 1 h 45. A private car is door to door; the AUH Express coach goes to the Ibn Battuta bus station. See our Abu Dhabi Airport to Dubai guide.

Is Abu Dhabi Airport close to Yas Island?

Yes. Yas Marina Circuit says it is about a ten-minute taxi ride from the airport. On Grand Prix week allow longer, because traffic builds around the island.

Do you provide child seats?

Yes. Note the children's ages at booking and the right infant, toddler or booster seat is provided. Tell us the children's ages and the number of bags so the desk assigns a car that fits.

What if my flight is delayed?

The pickup follows your flight because tracking is included on every airport pickup. We allow 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing. For a long delay, tell the desk.
