What is the best Mumbai airport pickup for an international arrival?
For an international arrival, the best Mumbai airport pickup is a pre-booked private car: your chauffeur tracks the flight, agrees a clear meeting point and drives you from Terminal 2 to your hotel. The distance is about 30 km to South Mumbai, but the time ranges from roughly one hour at night to two hours or more at rush hour.
Mumbai is a city built on a narrow peninsula, and almost every road runs north to south. The international airport sits in the northern suburbs, while many business and heritage hotels are at the far southern tip. Everything that happens between the two ends, traffic, rain and the sea link, decides whether the trip takes an hour or three.
For a first-time visitor that is the real story of a Mumbai airport transfer. This page sets out the airports and terminals, the realistic times, the new metro line, the monsoon, and when we would suggest a car over the alternatives. It also covers one point that is new in the past year: Mumbai now has a second airport.
Which airport and terminal: BOM Terminals 1 and 2, and Navi Mumbai
The main airport is Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, code BOM, in the northern suburbs of Santacruz and Sahar. It has two terminals. Terminal 2 handles international flights and full-service domestic carriers, and Terminal 1 handles domestic low-cost flights. They are separate buildings, so confirm which one your flight uses.
There is now a second airport. Navi Mumbai International Airport began commercial flight operations on 25 December 2025, with the first arrival an IndiGo flight from Bengaluru, as reported by the national broadcaster All India Radio. It is across the harbour in the Navi Mumbai area, and it is a different place, in a different direction, from Santacruz. Before you book a pickup, check the airport code on your ticket: BOM is the original airport, and the new one has its own code. If you have any doubt, send the flight number, and the desk confirms the airport and terminal.
How far is the airport from where you are staying?
| Destination | About distance | Typical drive time | Peak caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) | about 8–10 km | 25–60 min | 45–90 min on weekday evenings |
| Juhu and Bandra | about 8–12 km | 25–60 min | Slow on weekends |
| Worli and Lower Parel | about 17–20 km | 40–90 min | Heavy 5–9 pm |
| Nariman Point and Colaba | about 30–33 km | 60–120 min | Allow up to 2.5 hours in the evening peak |
| Pune | about 160 km | 3–4 h | Longer on Friday evenings and holidays |
Some guides describe the airport as about 8 km from downtown Mumbai. That is true of the northern suburbs, but the older business district and the heritage hotels are much further south, so the useful number is the distance to your hotel. These figures are rounded estimates for planning. If you have a fixed appointment, plan for the upper end of the range, and tell the desk the address.
Mumbai airport transfer options compared
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line) | 45 min to Cuffe Parade on the train, plus first and last legs | Distance-based public fare | You carry it; stairs and escalators | Light packers heading to a station near the line |
| Black-and-yellow (kaali-peeli) or prepaid taxi | 60–150 min | Metered or prepaid; confirm at the counter | 2 large bags | Daytime arrivals, flexible schedules |
| App-booked cab | 60–150 min | Surge-priced; waits at peak | Depends on the car | Short-notice rides |
| Pre-booked private car (Onroutz.ca) | 60–150 min | Fixed fare via booker | Sedan, SUV or Sprinter by group size | Families, 3+ travellers, late flights, business |
The metro line is the one real change in recent years. The Aqua Line, Mumbai Metro Line 3, opened end to end in October 2025: a 33.5 km underground corridor with 27 stations between Aarey and Cuffe Parade, and press coverage quotes about 45 minutes between the airport and Cuffe Parade, compared with a trip that previously took close to two hours by road. The figure comes from the Tribune report on the line's full opening.
When the metro is a good idea
If you are travelling alone, you pack light and your hotel is near a station on the Aqua Line, the metro now offers something that did not exist before: a predictable arrival time in a city where predictability is rare. It is air-conditioned, it does not care about the monsoon downpour overhead and it ends close to the southern business district.
Two cautions. Check which terminal the stations serve and how far the walk is, and remember you still have a last leg from the station to the hotel door. After a long-haul flight, with heavy cases and jet lag, that is often the part people regret.
When a pre-booked car is the right call
- A group of three or more. A Luxury SUV carries up to six passengers, an Executive Sprinter up to twelve.
- Heavy luggage. The airport and the roads around it are not built for dragging several cases.
- Children and older travellers. Child, toddler and booster seats are on request at booking, and the car comes to the kerb.
- Late-night arrivals. International flights often land after midnight. You want a named driver, not a negotiation.
- Business arrivals. If the day starts with a meeting, a confirmed car and a chauffeur who knows the hotel entrances matters.
- A hotel in the south. The farther south, the longer the road leg, and the more a comfortable car helps.
The fleet page has each class in detail. For a broader comparison see airport transfer versus taxi versus rideshare.
Monsoon, peak hours and the sea link
Mumbai's monsoon runs roughly from June to September, and heavy rain can flood low-lying roads and slow every route to a crawl. Plan extra time, and avoid back-to-back commitments on arrival day. Even outside the monsoon, the weekday peaks, roughly the morning from 8 to 11 and the evening from 5 to 9, change the equation. The Western Express Highway, the main spine through the suburbs, fills first.
The Bandra–Worli Sea Link is a bridge over the bay that shortens the run to south-central Mumbai when traffic is moving. Chauffeurs choose between the sea link, the coastal road and the inland highway depending on the live conditions. Tolls on the route are part of the fare we quote. For a better idea of how much time to leave, treat the table above as ranges, not promises.
How the pickup works at Mumbai airport
Every airport pickup is flight-tracked. We allow 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing, 30 after a domestic landing and 15 on other pickups. For international arrivals, the time between landing and the arrival hall can easily be an hour, with immigration queues at peak times and baggage reclaim.
Meeting arrangements at Indian airports follow the airport's own rules about who may enter the terminal building. We confirm the exact meeting point in writing: either a name-board meet and greet where the airport permits it, or a pickup point just outside the arrivals exit, with the chauffeur in contact by message. An alias on the board is available for privacy.
Entry rules: the e-Visa
Canadian passport holders use India's e-Visa system for tourism, and Mumbai is a designated e-Visa airport. According to the Indian government's e-Visa portal, Canada is on the eligibility list, the e-Tourist visa comes in 30-day, one-year and five-year versions, and you should apply at least four days before arrival. The portal also carries an advisory for Canadian nationals, so read it before you apply. Use only the government site, because look-alike services charge fees.
Beyond Mumbai: Pune, Lonavala and the coast
Many visitors leave the city within a day. Pune is about 160 km away on the expressway, a three to four hour drive that is better in a car with a driver than on a rushed schedule. Lonavala and the hill stations are shorter, and Alibaug, on the coast, is reached across the water. Tell the desk where you are going, and whether you want a one-way transfer or a car for the day.
For longer trips, the personal driver service keeps the same chauffeur and vehicle with you, and a larger party can use the Sprinter van with driver. If your next stop is Delhi, Agra or Goa, see our Delhi page, the Delhi to Agra route and the Goa page.
Weddings, film work and corporate arrivals
Mumbai hosts many weddings, trade visits and productions. For multi-vehicle arrivals, such as a wedding party or a delegation, we plan the pickups as one operation with several cars, and a lead chauffeur on the day. See weddings for the planning side, corporate events for delegations, and celebrity and talent transport for discreet arrivals. No photographs of passengers and no posts about trips; an NDA is signed whenever you ask.
How Onroutz.ca delivers a Mumbai transfer
Onroutz.ca is a Toronto-based desk. We do not own cars or offices in India. A vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner drives the car, and the Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto books, confirms, supports and invoices the ride. You get one booking, one confirmation, one invoice and a 24/7 contact. Partners drive vehicles four model years old or newer; Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach may be up to seven.
Our cancellation terms: more than 72 hours' notice, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10%; 48 hours or less, 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show, 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup. Big events may differ, and the confirmation says so.

Frequently asked questions
How far is Mumbai airport from South Mumbai?
About 30–33 km to Nariman Point and Colaba. The drive takes around an hour at night and up to two hours or more at the evening peak, longer in heavy monsoon rain.
Is there a metro from Mumbai airport?
Yes. Mumbai Metro Line 3, the Aqua Line, serves the airport and runs underground to Cuffe Parade. Press coverage of the October 2025 opening quotes about 45 minutes between the airport and Cuffe Parade. Check the station for your terminal and your last leg.
Which airport will my flight use, BOM or Navi Mumbai?
Look at the airport code on your ticket. Navi Mumbai International Airport started commercial flights on 25 December 2025 and is a separate airport in a different direction from BOM. Send the desk your flight number if you are unsure.
How much is a taxi from Mumbai airport to the city?
It depends on the type of taxi, the destination and the traffic, so there is no single figure. Prepaid and metered taxis, and app cabs with surge pricing, all differ. The booker shows our fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay.
Do Canadians need a visa for India?
Most Canadian visitors apply for an e-Visa. The government portal lists Canada as eligible, recommends applying at least four days before arrival and has an advisory for Canadian nationals. Check it before you book.
How long should I allow between landing and a meeting?
At least three hours on arrival day, and four if the meeting is in South Mumbai in the evening. Immigration, baggage and traffic each add variance.
Can I be met inside the terminal?
That depends on the airport's rules. We confirm in writing whether a name-board meet and greet is permitted for your terminal, or give a clear pickup point outside the exit.
What if my flight is delayed?
We track the flight, so the chauffeur adjusts. After an international landing you have 60 minutes of free waiting.
Can I book a car for a wedding party?
Yes. We plan multi-vehicle pickups with a lead chauffeur. Give the desk the flight list, the numbers and the venue.
