Few airports are as close to their city centre as Schiphol, and few have a rail link as quick. That makes the question for an Amsterdam airport transfer unusual: when does a private car beat a 17-minute train? The answer is not about the airport leg. It is about what surrounds it, such as a family with strollers and four suitcases, a business traveller with a 9 am meeting in the Zuidas, a guest of a canal-side hotel on a street that cars can barely enter, or a group heading on to The Hague, Rotterdam or Keukenhof. Here are the real timings, the real options, and how an Onroutz.ca booking from Schiphol works.

Check your fixed fare

What is the easiest way to get from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam city centre?

The train is the fastest and simplest option for one or two travellers: about 17 minutes to Amsterdam Centraal, running eight times an hour. A private car is easier for groups, families, heavy luggage, late arrivals and hotels away from the station, because it takes you to the door and the fare is fixed before you pay.

The Netherlands is a country where public transport works, and an honest guide has to say so. If you travel light and your hotel sits within a tram ride of Centraal, take the train. The car makes sense when the journey does not end at the station, or when the people in your party make the train a chore rather than a pleasure.

The Amsterdam tourist board adds that Intercity Direct trains have run from Schiphol to Amsterdam Zuid since 2025, four a day, with a metro connection. If you are going to the Zuidas business district or the RAI centre, check that service as well.

Schiphol's layout and where your driver meets you

Schiphol is a single large terminal building with three departure and arrival halls, and Schiphol Plaza, the shopping and station concourse, sits between them. Ticket machines for the train are near the baggage reclaim belts in Arrivals 1, 2 and 3, and the station is directly below Schiphol Plaza. Taxis stand at the official rank, and ride-hail apps use a designated pick-up point that is signposted inside the terminal. Official guidance warns that drivers who approach you inside the airport are not officially approved taxi drivers, so ignore anyone offering a ride in the hall.

For a pre-booked car, the drill is straightforward. The chauffeur tracks your flight, waits at the meeting point stated on your confirmation, and on request meets you inside arrivals with a name board. Alias names can be used for privacy. Schiphol directs those who collect people to the P1 pick-up car park, a two-to-six-minute walk from Schiphol Plaza, and keeps its free Kiss and Ride zones for very short drop-offs, so a good driver does not hover on the departures level.

The train, the bus and the taxi in detail

The train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Centraal takes about 17 minutes, according to the tourist board, with stops at Sloterdijk and Lelylaan on some services. The station is below the airport; you ride an escalator or lift down from Schiphol Plaza. Platform numbers can change, so follow the signs. For a trip to the Museum Quarter you will need a tram from Centraal, which adds 10 to 15 minutes.

Bus 397, the Amsterdam Airport Express, runs about every 10 minutes during the day and uses stop B17 outside Schiphol Plaza. It runs to Museumplein, the Rijksmuseum and Leidseplein without a change, which is why hotels in the museum district often favour it. A night service, the N97, runs hourly.

Taxis are metered. The tourist board says a standard ride to the centre typically costs €35 to €55, and the meter can reach about €75 depending on distance and time of day. Check that the taxi has a meter, because an unmetered ride is a negotiation, and negotiations at 1 am rarely go well.

When a private car from Schiphol makes sense

  • Luggage and strollers. A change at Centraal with two large bags and a child is the real cost of the train.
  • Canal hotels. Many sit on narrow streets where the last 300 metres from a tram stop become a pull-and-push exercise. A car stops at the nearest legal point, and your chauffeur will say exactly where.
  • Groups of three or more. One vehicle, one fare, one pickup.
  • Onward trips. A car to The Hague, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Haarlem or the Keukenhof gardens (open in the spring season) is a direct drive, while the rail alternative involves changes.
  • Business timing. A booked car at a fixed time keeps a Zuidas meeting on schedule.
  • Late arrivals. Night flights, delayed landings and quiet trams do not combine well.

Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar) takes up to three passengers and two large plus two cabin bags. First Class Sedan (S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar) takes three. Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar) takes up to six passengers and five or six large bags. The Executive Sprinter seats 12 passengers with 12 bags. All are "or similar", with the model confirmed at booking. See the fleet for details.

How your Onroutz.ca Schiphol transfer is delivered

Onroutz.ca is a Toronto-based desk, and the Amsterdam ride is driven by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner. Toronto books, confirms, supports and invoices it, so you deal with a single team around the clock. Partner cars are no older than four model years, and Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach can be as old as seven. We do not own cars or offices in the Netherlands.

  1. Enter your flight number and the hotel address.
  2. Check the fare in the booker; it is fixed and all-in before you pay.
  3. Receive the confirmation with the chauffeur's details and the meeting point.
  4. Land. After an international landing the first 60 minutes of waiting are free; after a domestic landing, 30; on other pickups, 15.
  5. Ride to the door. Most vehicles carry bottled water and a phone charger.

Seats for babies, toddlers and older children can be requested at booking. Multi-leg itineraries, such as Schiphol to the hotel, a day in Rotterdam and the return, can sit on one booking, and companies can be invoiced monthly.

Border rules for Canadians and other visitors to the Netherlands

The Netherlands is in the Schengen area. The Government of Canada says Canadians do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and passports must be valid for at least three months beyond the date you expect to leave the Schengen area. Since 10 April 2026 the European Union's Entry/Exit System has been fully operational at external borders, collecting your facial image and fingerprints on entry; no action is needed before you travel. ETIAS, the pre-travel authorisation, is scheduled to start in the last quarter of 2026, and the exact start date will be announced later. The Canadian government notes that applications are not yet open.

Plan an extra 20 – 30 minutes in the arrivals process in busy periods. The 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing is designed to cover that.

Onward connections: from Schiphol to the rest of Europe

Amsterdam is often a stop in a longer European trip. The Europe private transfer hub links every gateway we cover. Arrivals from London can look at the Heathrow Airport transfer page or the Gatwick page, and Paris is covered at Paris Charles de Gaulle. New to booking a private car? How private airport transfers work walks through it, and an executive car service by the hour covers a day of meetings. The overall airport transfers hub lists every airport, and the guide to airport transfers versus taxis and rideshares is useful if you are weighing the options.

For arrivals where you want someone waiting at the gate, the airport meet and greet service puts a name board inside arrivals. Chauffeurs keep trips private: no photographs, no posts, and NDAs on request.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam city centre?

The train takes about 17 minutes to Amsterdam Centraal, eight times an hour. Bus 397 serves the Museum Quarter, and taxis take roughly 25 – 50 minutes. A pre-booked private car takes you to your hotel door and the fare is fixed before you pay.

How much is a taxi from Schiphol to Amsterdam?

The Amsterdam tourist board says a standard metered ride to the centre typically costs €35 to €55, with the meter reaching about €75 depending on distance and time of day. Our booker, by contrast, shows a fixed amount before you pay.

Is the train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Centraal worth it?

Yes, for one or two travellers with light luggage and a hotel near the station. It costs €4.90 one way as of 2026 per the tourist board. A car is better when you have strollers, many bags, a canal hotel or more than two people.

Are Uber and Bolt allowed at Schiphol?

Schiphol has a designated pick-up point for ride-hail apps, signposted in the terminal, so they operate. Prices are surge-based and vary. A pre-booked car avoids the variability, and the booker shows the fixed fare before you pay.

Which Schiphol arrivals hall will I use?

Schiphol has three arrivals halls, and your airline's baggage reclaim determines which. Your chauffeur receives the flight details and meets you at the stated point, or inside arrivals with a name board if you request it.

Can a driver wait if my flight is delayed?

Yes. We follow the flight, so a late landing moves the pickup. Free waiting is 60 minutes after an international landing, 30 after a domestic one and 15 on other pickups, and the desk answers at any hour if you need a change.

Can you take us from Schiphol to The Hague, Rotterdam or Utrecht?

Yes. A direct drive to The Hague takes roughly 45 – 70 minutes, Rotterdam 55 – 80, and Utrecht 40 – 60, depending on traffic. Add the destination in the booker and the fixed fare appears before you pay. Groups of up to 12 can use the Executive Sprinter.

What if my hotel is on a street cars cannot enter?

Many canal-side hotels have restricted access. Give us the hotel's address and your chauffeur will stop at the nearest legal point and tell you where, so you are not guessing at a tram stop with your luggage.

What is your cancellation policy?

A booking can be cancelled free of charge until 72 hours before pickup. Cancelling at 72 hours or less costs 10%, at 48 hours or less 50%, and at 24 hours or less (or a no-show) 100%, all measured from the scheduled pickup. Large events may use a different deadline, which your confirmation prints.
