What is the best airport Malaga transfer for getting to Marbella?
For most travellers arriving at Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP), a pre-booked private car is the simplest way to reach Marbella: a chauffeur waits in arrivals, tracks your flight, and drives about 50 to 60 km without a rank queue. Trains do not run to Marbella, so the real alternatives are an intercity coach or a taxi.
Malaga is the gateway to the Costa del Sol, and almost every guest is heading somewhere other than Malaga itself. Marbella, Puerto Banús, Estepona, Fuengirola and the golf villas behind them sit west of the airport along the A-7 and the AP-7. The city of Malaga is only about 8 km east of the terminal.
This page covers the airport transfer from Malaga airport as a route planner would: the options, the times, and the days when a private car is the better call. It is part of our Europe private transfer network and sits under the main airport transfers hub.
Malaga Airport at a glance
Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport is a single-site airport on the coast, about 8 km from the city centre according to Spain's tourism board. Passenger flights use Terminal 3, and the bus stops, train station and taxi ranks all sit within a short walk of the arrivals hall.
Road access is by the MA-20 ring road, with the MA-21 and MA-23 feeding it. From the west and east you join the A-7 coastal road or the AP-7 toll motorway. That road layout is the whole story of your transfer time: the airport is easy to leave, and the delay, when there is one, comes on the coast road.
- Distance to Malaga centre: about 8 km, usually 15 to 20 minutes.
- Distance to Marbella: about 50 to 60 km depending on the exact address, usually 45 to 60 minutes on the AP-7.
- Train: the C1 Cercanias line serves the airport, Torremolinos, Benalmadena and Fuengirola, but not Marbella.
- Arrivals hall: domestic and Schengen flights usually reach the hall faster than long-haul or UK flights, which queue at passport control.
How a private pickup works at AGP
Every airport pickup is flight-tracked. If your plane lands early, we know. If it is two hours late, the chauffeur's start time moves with it and you are not charged for the delay.
Your chauffeur waits inside arrivals with a name board on request. If you prefer privacy, we can put an alias on the board instead of your name. The included waiting time is 60 minutes after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic one, counted from the actual landing time. Flights from the UK, Canada and the USA are international, so you have a full hour to clear passport control and collect bags.
From the hall it is a short walk to the car. The chauffeur takes the luggage, and you are on the road within minutes of leaving the terminal.
- Landing: the desk sees the actual arrival time.
- Passport control and baggage claim.
- Arrivals hall: the chauffeur and board are waiting.
- Car: water and phone charging in most vehicles, child seats if requested at booking.
- Drop-off at the hotel door, the villa gate or the marina.
Malaga Airport to the city and the coast: every way compared
Here is the honest comparison. The train and the airport bus are good at what they do. The private car wins on a different set of problems.
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| C1 Cercanias train to Malaga Centro-Alameda | About 12 min on the train, 30 to 40 min with walking and connections | Published fare range of 1.80 to 2.70 euros as of 2026 | Fine for a bag or two, no help on stairs | Solo travellers staying in central Malaga |
| EMT airport express bus to the city centre | 20 to 40 min depending on traffic and stop | 4 euros as of 2026 | Luggage racks, no help loading | Budget travel to Malaga city |
| Intercity coach to Marbella | 1 h 15 or more with a bus-station transfer | Fare set by the coach operator | Hold storage, bring everything yourself | Light packers who are not in a hurry |
| Metered taxi | 15 to 20 min to Malaga, 45 to 60 min to Marbella | Metered, with a 6.27 euro airport supplement and a 17.37 euro weekday-daytime minimum as of 2026 | 3 to 4 bags in a saloon | Short trips without a booking |
| Private transfer, sedan or SUV | Same road time, no queue, no transfer | Fixed fare via booker | 2 large and 2 cabin bags in a sedan, up to 6 large in an SUV | Marbella, families, golf bags, late arrivals |
Prices for the train, bus and taxi come from Spain's tourism board and are listed as of 2026; they can change, so check the operators. For our own car, the booker quotes one fixed all-in fare once you enter your pickup, drop-off and vehicle, and you see it before paying.
When the train or bus is the better choice
If you are going to Malaga city or to Torremolinos and you have one carry-on, take the C1. It is cheap, it runs from the airport itself, and you will not sit in ring-road traffic. The train takes roughly 12 minutes to the Centro-Alameda stop.
The airport express bus is a fair second choice for anyone staying near the port or the Alameda Principal, especially if you land at midday when the trains are frequent.
A taxi makes sense for a one-off short hop when you have not booked anything. For a hotel in Malaga's old town, where narrow streets restrict cars, a taxi to the nearest permitted point is often as good as anything.
The private car wins when the destination is the coast. It also wins when:
- there are three or more of you and the combined cost of tickets and taxis adds up;
- you are carrying golf clubs, a pushchair and a week's luggage for a villa stay;
- you land after the evening trains have thinned;
- you want the same driver for the return leg.
Airport transfer from Malaga airport to Marbella
Marbella is the single most common destination, and the route is straightforward. From the airport you follow the ring road to the A-7, then choose between two roads.
The AP-7 toll motorway is the faster option. It is straighter, carries less local traffic, and gets you to Marbella in about 45 to 60 minutes. The toll rate changes by season, and the chauffeur handles it. The free A-7 runs closer to the sea through Torremolinos, Benalmadena and Fuengirola. It takes about an hour or more in daytime and is often slow in July and August.
Distance is about 50 to 60 km, depending on whether you are going to the old town, the Golden Mile, Puerto Banus or Nueva Andalucia. Add 10 to 15 minutes for the last leg through town in high season.
Marbella is served by an intercity bus line, but it will not stop at your villa gate; for day trips to Ronda or Granada, ask about hourly limousine hire.
Some practical points by area:
- Marbella old town and the Golden Mile: straightforward from the AP-7 exits. Hotels along the Golden Mile are usually the quickest to reach.
- Puerto Banus: the port area is congested on summer evenings. Pickups timed for late morning or late afternoon avoid the worst of it.
- Nueva Andalucia and the golf valley: a short extra leg inland from the main road.
- Elviria and the east side: closer to the airport, about 45 minutes from AGP in light traffic.
East and west along the Costa del Sol
The coast is long, so the numbers change quickly as you leave Malaga. These are rough road distances from the terminal, all labelled "about" because the exact figure depends on your address.
| Destination | About (km) | Usual drive time | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Malaga city centre | 8 | 15 to 20 min | Short ring-road run |
| Torremolinos | 8 to 10 | 10 to 15 min | Close to the airport, on the C1 line |
| Benalmadena | 12 to 15 | 15 to 20 min | Marina and the hillside hotels |
| Fuengirola | 20 to 25 | 25 to 30 min | End of the C1 line |
| Marbella | 50 to 60 | 45 to 60 min | AP-7 or A-7 |
| Estepona | 80 to 90 | 1 h to 1 h 15 | Further along the AP-7 |
| Sotogrande | 100 to 110 | 1 h 15 to 1 h 30 | Polo, golf and marina area |
| Nerja | 55 to 60 | 45 to 55 min | East on the A-7 |
Villa, golf and group arrivals
Costa del Sol villa arrivals have their own rhythm. You land, and your keyholder or the property manager is meeting you at a specific time. A private transfer lets you add a supermarket stop on the way, so that the fridge is not empty on the first night. That stop is arranged at booking and is not something to improvise on the coast road.
Golf is the other big driver of airport traffic on this coast. A sedan takes two large and two cabin bags, which is not enough once clubs enter the picture. For a foursome with clubs, a Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar) carries up to six passengers with five to six large bags. For bigger groups, an Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter) seats up to 12 with 12 bags, and mini-coaches and coaches of 20 to 56 seats are available on request. The exact model is confirmed at booking.
Choosing the right vehicle
Think of the vehicle in terms of what travels with you. An Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar) takes up to 3 passengers with 2 large and 2 cabin bags, and a First Class Sedan (S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar) seats the same three in a quieter, roomier cabin. For clubs or a fourth traveller, the Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar) carries up to 6 with 5 to 6 large bags. Maybach, Rolls-Royce, stretch limousines and armoured vehicles can be requested; availability is confirmed at booking. Every class is quoted "or similar", and the model is confirmed at booking.
On the Costa del Sol, partner vehicles are no more than 4 model years old (up to 7 for Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach). See the full fleet for every class.
How the Malaga transfer is delivered
On the Costa del Sol the driving is done by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner, while the booking stays with the Toronto desk, which confirms it, supports it and invoices it. That gives you a single confirmation, a single invoice and a 24/7 contact whatever happens on the day. Partner cars are no more than 4 model years old (7 for Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach). Onroutz.ca does not own cars or offices in Spain. If a flight changes or a key handover slips, one call to the same desk adjusts the pickup.
If a flight changes or a key handover slips, one call to the same desk adjusts the pickup.
When the coast road is slow
Costa del Sol traffic is not random. It follows the holiday calendar.
- Summer Saturdays and Sundays: changeover days for villa and hotel stays. The A-7 near Fuengirola and the Marbella accesses are slow in the late afternoon.
- Late July and August: add 15 to 30 minutes to the A-7 estimates, and favour the AP-7.
- Easter week and the first days of May: busy on the western coast.
- Late-night arrivals: the roads are clear, but check that your hotel reception or key handover is staffed.
Flight tracking covers the airport end. The road end is where a buffer matters, so allow extra margin before a same-day tee time or dinner booking.
Entry rules for Spain
Spain is part of the Schengen Area, and short visits from the USA and Canada do not need a visa. What is changing is the paperwork around the border: an Entry/Exit System that registers non-EU travellers on arrival, and an authorisation scheme called ETIAS. Because dates and procedures have been changing, check the EU's official page, travel-europe.europa.eu, before you fly. UK visitors should do the same.
Allow extra time at passport control on a busy summer afternoon. Our 60-minute free wait after international landings is built for exactly that queue.
Return trips work in reverse: the chauffeur arrives at your villa or hotel at an agreed time based on your flight and the traffic window, and a multi-leg booking can cover arrival, an overnight stay and departure on one invoice.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get from Malaga airport to Marbella?
You can take an intercity coach, a taxi or a pre-booked private car. The C1 train does not go to Marbella. A private transfer drives about 50 to 60 km, usually 45 to 60 minutes on the AP-7, directly to your hotel or villa, with the fare fixed before you book.
How far is Malaga airport from the city centre?
About 8 km. By road it takes 15 to 20 minutes outside peak times. The C1 train covers the distance in roughly 12 minutes to the Centro-Alameda stop, and the EMT airport express bus runs to the city centre as well.
How long does the transfer from Malaga airport to Marbella take?
Plan on 45 to 60 minutes on the AP-7 toll motorway in normal traffic. On the free A-7 coast road it often takes an hour or more, and in July and August summer queues can add 15 to 30 minutes either way.
How much is a taxi from Malaga airport?
Taxis are metered. Spain's tourism board lists an airport supplement of 6.27 euros and a weekday-daytime minimum fare of 17.37 euros as of 2026, with higher minimums at night and on weekends. A private transfer is different: the booker shows our fixed all-in fare for your route before you pay.
Is there a train from Malaga airport?
Yes. The C1 Cercanias line stops at the airport and runs between Malaga Centro-Alameda and Fuengirola, serving Torremolinos and Benalmadena on the way. Published fares run from 1.80 to 2.70 euros as of 2026. It does not reach Marbella or the western coast.
How long will the driver wait if my flight is late?
The pickup follows your real landing time, not the schedule. The first 60 minutes of waiting after an international landing and the first 30 after a domestic landing are free, and a delay to the flight itself costs nothing extra. Waiting is counted from touchdown.
Can I get a child seat or a vehicle for golf clubs?
Yes to both. Ask for a child, toddler or booster seat in the booking form. For golf bags, choose a Luxury SUV or an Executive Sprinter and tell us how many bags you are bringing so the clubs and cases fit together.
