Chicago has two commercial airports and a hotel map that stretches along the lakefront and the river, so "airport to hotel" is really four different trips: O'Hare or Midway, and a hotel on the Magnificent Mile, in the Gold Coast, in River North or in the Loop. This page covers Chicago airport transportation to your hotel in the order a traveller actually decides: the distances, the honest comparison with the train, taxi and rideshare, how pickup works at each airport, and the cases where a pre-booked car from Onroutz.ca is worth having waiting at arrivals.
What is the best way to get from a Chicago airport to your hotel?
For one traveller with a light bag and a hotel near a station, the CTA train is the dependable choice: the Blue Line from O'Hare runs around the clock, and the Orange Line from Midway takes about 25 minutes. For two or more people, luggage, a late landing or a fixed schedule, a pre-booked car takes you to the hotel door.
The honest answer depends on four things: which airport you land at, where the hotel is, what time it is, and how many bags are with you. A rucksack and a Loop hotel on a weekday morning points to the train. A family of four with checked cases, landing at O'Hare at 18:30 in February, does not.
How far is each Chicago hotel district from O'Hare and Midway?
Distances are approximate road distances to the middle of each district. Times are for normal conditions and for the weekday peaks when the Kennedy Expressway (I-90/94) toward the city, and the Stevenson (I-55) from Midway, slow down. Snow and ice change every figure; see the winter section below.
| Hotel area | From O'Hare (about) | From Midway (about) | Typical drive time |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Loop and South Loop | 27 km / 17 mi | 16 km / 10 mi | O'Hare 35–60 min; Midway 20–35 min |
| Magnificent Mile and Streeterville | 28 km / 17 mi | 18 km / 11 mi | O'Hare 40–70 min; Midway 25–40 min |
| Gold Coast and Old Town | 29 km / 18 mi | 19 km / 12 mi | O'Hare 40–70 min; Midway 25–45 min |
| River North and West Loop | 26 km / 16 mi | 16 km / 10 mi | O'Hare 35–60 min; Midway 20–40 min |
| Rosemont and the O'Hare hotel cluster | 3–8 km / 2–5 mi | 35 km / 22 mi | O'Hare 10–20 min; Midway 35–60 min |
When the Kennedy is slow, a good driver weighs the Kennedy, the Eisenhower (I-290) and surface streets against live traffic. Tell the booker your hotel's name and street, and the quote is fixed for that address.
Every way from O'Hare and Midway to a Chicago hotel, side by side

| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private car (Onroutz.ca partner) | O'Hare 40–75 min; Midway 25–50 min | Fixed fare via booker, quoted before you pay | Sedan 2 large + 2 cabin; SUV 5–6 large; Sprinter 12 | Families, groups, late landings, winter, business schedules |
| CTA Blue Line from O'Hare | About 45 min plus the walk from the station | $5 or less per CTA, 24 hours a day | You carry it | One or two light travellers, hotel near the Loop |
| CTA Orange Line from Midway | About 25 min plus the walk from the station | $2.50 or less per CTA, not overnight | You carry it | Solo travellers to downtown hotels |
| Taxi | O'Hare 25–90 min; Midway 15–40 min | Around $40 from O'Hare and around $25 from Midway per CTA's chart | Boot space | One or two people, no booking |
| Rideshare | O'Hare 25–90 min; Midway 15–40 min | Around $35–50 from O'Hare, surging much higher at peaks | Depends on the car | Short notice, light luggage |
| Shuttle van | O'Hare 25–90 min; Midway 15–40 min | Over $25 per person from O'Hare per CTA | One or two bags | Solo travellers with time to spare |
The fares and times for public and metered options come from the Chicago Transit Authority's airport page, read in October 2026. The CTA notes that taxi, rideshare and shuttle figures exclude gratuity and that the train fares assume the cheapest pass or fare option. It also gives 40 to 45 minutes as the normal Blue Line run to downtown and 20 to 25 minutes as the normal Orange Line run from Midway.
When the CTA train is the better choice
The Blue Line is genuinely good. It runs 24 hours a day, it is not affected by Kennedy traffic, and for a Loop hotel a short walk or one transfer from a station it will often beat a car on a weekday afternoon. The Orange Line from Midway is quicker still. If you travel alone with a small bag and your hotel is within a few minutes of a station, take the train and keep the money.
Know the limits before you commit. Neither line stops at the hotel door, and the Michigan Avenue and Gold Coast hotels are a bus or taxi hop from the nearest platform. Platforms mean stairs, and escalators are not always running. The Orange Line does not run overnight; the CTA points overnight Midway travellers to the N62 Archer bus. After a long flight, a train, a transfer and a wheeled suitcase on a wet pavement is a poor way to end the day.
Taxi, rideshare and shuttle: how pickup works
At O'Hare, taxis load at stands on the lower-level curb outside baggage claim at each terminal, and the airport tells passengers to use only those stands. Pickup for taxis is in the middle commercial lane at Terminals 1, 2 and 3 and the inner commercial lane at Terminal 5. App-based rides have been consolidated at certain terminals in recent years, so open the ride app on arrival and follow the pickup point it shows rather than trusting an older guide. Midway publishes its own taxi, limo and rideshare rules on the same airport system.
Taxis and rideshare suit a solo traveller in daylight. The weaker points are the queue at the stand, a surge price at the exact moment a full flight lands, and the lack of a named driver or a set pickup time. The comparison across cities is in our guide to airport transfer versus taxi versus rideshare.
Is there a free hotel shuttle from O'Hare or Midway?
Yes, for some hotels, and it matters to know which. Free courtesy shuttles are run by individual hotels near the airport and serve those hotels only. They do not take you to a hotel on Michigan Avenue or in River North.
The Hilton Chicago O'Hare Airport is the clearest example: the airport describes it as located directly across from Terminals 1, 2 and 3, reached by underground walkways, with Terminal 5 reached by the Airport Transit System. See the airport's on-site hotel page. If you are sleeping there before a morning flight, you do not need a car at all.
For hotels in the city, there is no free shuttle. Your choices are the train, a metered ride, a shared van or a pre-booked car.
Major Chicago hotels we drive to
The hotels below are examples of where our drivers deliver. The notes cover how arrival works at each address, drawn from the hotel's published address and the airport's own information.
| Hotel | District | Nearest airport | Pickup and drop-off note |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Peninsula Chicago | Chicago - Magnificent Mile | Midway is closer; O'Hare also served | Address is 108 East Superior Street, just east of North Michigan Avenue. Give the street address so the driver arrives on Superior Street rather than circling Michigan Avenue |
| Four Seasons Hotel Chicago | Chicago - Gold Coast | Midway is closer; O'Hare also served | Address is 120 East Delaware Place. Guests enter from Delaware Place, not Michigan Avenue, and take an elevator to the upper-floor lobby |
| The Langham, Chicago | Chicago - River North | Midway is closer; O'Hare also served | Address is 330 North Wabash Avenue on the Chicago River. Hotel arrival is on the Wabash Avenue side of the building; office tenants use a separate entrance |
| Hilton Chicago O'Hare Airport | Chicago - O'Hare International Airport (ORD) | O'Hare | On airport grounds across from Terminals 1, 2 and 3 and linked by underground walkways; a car is rarely needed unless you are continuing to another address |
Hotels are listed to help you plan; listing does not mean the hotel is affiliated with or endorses Onroutz.ca.
Michigan Avenue, the Gold Coast and the last block
The Magnificent Mile and the Gold Coast have the most hotels per block in the city, and also the tightest kerbs. North Michigan Avenue carries buses, delivery vehicles and taxis all day, so a car that tries to stop on the avenue itself can hold up traffic. Hotels on the side streets, such as Superior Street and Delaware Place, take guests from their own entrances, and a driver who knows the address will turn onto the right street before the last intersection instead of after it.
Evening drop-off is easier than midday, and the busy hour for dinner reservations, from about 18:00 to 20:00, is when doormen are busiest. Tell the doorman your name, let the bell team handle bags, and keep your documents in a cabin bag. If your reservation needs an early check-in, ask the hotel the day before; a morning arrival after an overnight flight often means leaving bags at the desk.
River North, the Loop and McCormick Place
River North and the Loop are closer to the Kennedy and the Eisenhower, so the drive from O'Hare is shorter than to the lakefront hotels, and the one-way grid around Wabash Avenue and the river bridges is easy for a chauffeur who drives it daily. Wabash Avenue sits under the elevated train tracks in the Loop, which narrows sight lines but does not close the street.
Chicago hosts some of the biggest trade shows in North America. The bigger ones at McCormick Place, on the lakefront south of the Loop, and at the Rosemont convention centre near O'Hare send thousands of delegates through both airports in the same few hours. If your dates match a large show, book early, and see our notes on trade show transportation. Event bookings sometimes carry a different cancellation cut-off, which is printed on the confirmation.
How the Chicago transfer works with Onroutz.ca
Onroutz.ca is a transfer desk based in Toronto. Outside Toronto and the GTA, the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner, and Onroutz.ca books, confirms, supports and invoices it from Toronto: one booking, one confirmation, one invoice, one 24/7 contact. Partner vehicles are no more than four model years old. For the wider picture of Chicago service, including hourly hire, see our Chicago limousine page.
What happens on the day:
- Your confirmation names the vehicle class and the meeting point for your terminal.
- We track your flight from departure, so an early or late landing moves the pickup with it.
- After an international landing you have 60 minutes of free waiting; after a domestic landing, 30. That covers customs, bags and a slow carousel.
- The chauffeur meets you inside at arrivals with a name board if you asked for meet and greet, or comes to the lower-level curb when you message that you have your bags. An alias name can go on the board if you prefer privacy.
- The chauffeur loads the bags and drives to the hotel entrance or the nearest legal stop.
If you are flying from Toronto Pearson or Billy Bishop, you have cleared US customs before you board through preclearance, so you land at O'Hare or Midway as a domestic arrival and the walk to the car is short.
Winter, wind and the lake
From November to March, weather is the biggest variable in any Chicago airport trip. Snow slows the Kennedy and the Dan Ryan, freezing rain closes ramps and strong winds off the lake hold flights on the ground. The tracking matters most then: if your flight circles or diverts, the pickup follows the actual landing, not the scheduled one. Three habits help. Keep your confirmation message on your phone. Allow the upper end of every range in the tables above. Tell the 24/7 desk early if your plans change, so the driver can adjust before reaching the airport.
Late arrivals, groups and children
Late flights are where a private car makes the most difference. The Blue Line runs overnight, but a 23:30 landing at Midway means the Orange Line has stopped, and a rideshare queue after a storm can be long. A named driver, a fixed pickup time and a fixed fare take the guesswork out of that hour.
- Groups. A Luxury SUV seats up to six with five to six large bags behind them, and an Executive Sprinter seats up to 12 with 12 bags, which keeps a wedding party or a sales team on one arrival. Mini-coaches and coaches of 20 to 56 seats are available on request. See Sprinter van with driver.
- Children. Child, toddler and booster seats can be added at booking. Tell us the ages and weights.
- Privacy. Chauffeurs do not photograph clients or post about trips, and NDAs are available on request.
- Corporate travel. Corporate accounts with monthly invoicing and multi-leg itineraries on one booking are supported; see the executive car service page.

The trip back to O'Hare or Midway
For departures, plan from the airline's check-in cut-off backward, then add the traffic margin. Weekday evenings from the Loop to O'Hare are slow, and Sunday afternoons are slow in both directions. Ask the hotel for its bell desk's usual lead time, and book a pickup that leaves a comfortable cushion rather than a tight one. The arrival and departure legs can share one booking if you want both rides on a single confirmation. For other American cities see the USA hub and the full list of hotel transfers; for airport-side details, start at airport transfers.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get from O'Hare to my hotel in downtown Chicago?
Take the Blue Line to the Loop in about 45 minutes, a taxi or rideshare in 25 to 90 minutes depending on traffic, or a pre-booked car that meets you at arrivals. The train suits one traveller with light bags; the car suits groups, luggage and late landings.
How much is a taxi from O'Hare to downtown Chicago?
The CTA's airport chart lists around $40 for a taxi from O'Hare to downtown and around $25 from Midway, excluding the tip. Metered fares move with traffic and the exact address. Our fare is the fixed one shown in the booker before you pay.
Is there a free shuttle from Chicago airport to the hotel?
Only for hotels near the airport, and each hotel runs its own. The Hilton Chicago O'Hare is on airport grounds and linked by walkways. Hotels on Michigan Avenue or in River North do not have a free airport shuttle, so you would use the train, a taxi, a shared van or a pre-booked car.
Which is better for a hotel stay, O'Hare or Midway?
You rarely get to choose, because it depends on your airline. Midway is closer to the Loop and the lakefront hotels, usually a 20 to 40 minute drive. O'Hare is farther and more affected by Kennedy traffic. Both are served the same way, with flight tracking and a named driver.
Where will my driver meet me at the Chicago airport?
Your confirmation names the spot for your terminal. Where the airport allows it, the driver waits inside arrivals with a name board; otherwise they come to the lower-level curb once you message that you have your bags. After an international landing, 60 minutes of free waiting are included.
Can I book a car from the airport for a late arrival?
Yes. Your flight is tracked, so a delay moves the pickup. Free waiting is 60 minutes after an international landing and 30 after a domestic one. The 24/7 desk can help if the flight is rebooked or cancelled.
What is your cancellation policy?
More than 72 hours' notice: no charge. 72 hours or less: 10%. 48 hours or less: 50%. 24 hours or less, or a no-show: 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup. Large events may carry a different cut-off, printed on the confirmation.
