How do you get to Southampton cruise port from Heathrow or Gatwick?
Southampton cruise port is about 65 miles (105 km) from Heathrow, usually 1 h 15 to 1 h 30 by road, and about 80 miles (130 km) from Gatwick. There is no direct train from Heathrow. A private car collects you at arrivals and drives straight to your terminal in time for your allocated check-in.
Southampton is the UK's main cruise port, and for travellers from North America it is often the first or last stop of a British Isles, Atlantic or Mediterranean sailing. Most arrive by air at Heathrow or Gatwick, which are both on the opposite side of the M25 from the port, and the real question is how to cover that last 65 to 85 miles with large cruise luggage and a fixed boarding window.
This page lays out the options as a route planner would, including which Southampton terminal is which, how long the drive takes, and when a private transfer is worth booking. It belongs to our cruise transfers hub and our Europe network.
Southampton cruise port at a glance: five terminals, two dock areas
Southampton has five cruise terminals in two dock areas. Associated British Ports, which runs the port, lists them with their entry points.
| Dock area | Terminal | Entry point |
|---|---|---|
| Eastern Docks | QE II Cruise Terminal | Dock Gate 4 |
| Eastern Docks | Ocean Cruise Terminal | Dock Gate 4 |
| Western Docks | City Cruise Terminal | Dock Gate 10 |
| Western Docks | Horizon Cruise Terminal | Dock Gate 10 |
| Western Docks | Mayflower Cruise Terminal | Dock Gate 20 for drivers, Gate 10 for pedestrians |
Your cruise documents name the terminal, and it can change between sailings, so we take it from your confirmation and set the drop-off to match. At each terminal the bag drop is outside the building; after dropping the bags you go inside to check in and clear security before boarding.
- Road route: from the M27 you leave at junction 3 and join the M271, then take the A33 to the city and docks, following signs for the dock gates. For Mayflower the usual route is the A33 to Dock Gate 10 or the M271 and Redbridge Road to Gate 20.
- Nearest station: Southampton Central. ABP gives walking times of about 15 minutes to City and Horizon and about 30 minutes to Mayflower and Ocean, and recommends a taxi for QE II.
- Southampton Airport: about 6 miles from the terminals, with a station at Southampton Airport Parkway.
How the private pickup works for your sailing
Your flight is tracked from departure, so the chauffeur follows an early or late landing. Waiting is included for 60 minutes after an international landing and 30 after a domestic one, from touchdown. Heathrow can be slow at passport control for long-haul arrivals, and the hour is built for that.
The chauffeur meets you at arrivals with a name board on request, or an alias on the board if you prefer privacy. Cruise luggage goes into the car at the terminal, and the next hands that take it are the port porters. Most vehicles have water and phone charging, and child, toddler and booster seats can be added at the time of booking.
Embarkation timing is the real constraint. Cruise lines assign check-in windows, and ABP's own guidance for passengers is to arrive at the allocated time. We work backward from that window, your landing time and the traffic forecast, and we tell you if the plan looks tight.

| Metered taxi or minicab | 1 h 15 to 1 h 45 | Metered or quoted by the operator | 3 to 4 bags | Short notice |
| Private car, sedan or SUV | 1 h 15 to 1 h 30 from Heathrow, 1 h 40 to 2 h from Gatwick | Fixed fare via booker | 2 large and 2 cabin bags in a sedan, up to 6 large in an SUV | Families, groups, tight embarkation windows |

When the train or coach is the better choice
If you are two people with two cases each, you are arriving a day early and you do not need to be anywhere at a set hour, rail or a coach is a sensible, cheaper plan. Many cruise passengers spend a night in Southampton or in London and take the train down in the morning.
Another good case: you are staying in central London before the cruise. Trains to Southampton Central leave from London Waterloo, and a short taxi from the station reaches most terminals. That makes the train a reasonable choice for a London hotel guest travelling light.
The limits are luggage and connections. Cruise cases are large, and platform stairs, changes in London or Reading and the final taxi leg are a lot to handle. If a delayed flight lands at Heathrow in the middle of the afternoon, the coach and rail timetable may have no sensible connection left.
Why a private car suits embarkation day
- Embarkation day with a long-haul flight. There is no slack in the schedule if you land at Heathrow at 10 am and your check-in window closes mid-afternoon.
- Heavy luggage. Cruise suitcases are large and plentiful.
- Families and groups. Three or more people make a car cost-effective per head.
- Late or early flights. The first coach and the last train do not always match your schedule.
- Disembarkation day. The ship docks early in the morning, you leave on a staggered schedule, and the car is waiting at the terminal to drive you to Heathrow or Gatwick for an afternoon flight.
- Pre-cruise nights in London. A hotel pickup and a terminal drop-off on one booking.
Distances and drive times to Southampton cruise terminals
All figures are approximate road distances and depend on your exact terminal.
| From | About (miles) | About (km) | Usual drive time | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heathrow | 63 to 67 | 102 to 108 | 1 h 15 to 1 h 30 | M25 then M3, allow 2 h or more in rush hour or on an M25 incident |
| Gatwick | 80 to 85 | 130 to 137 | 1 h 40 to 2 h | M23, M25 and M3 |
| Central London | 75 to 80 | 120 to 130 | 1 h 45 to 2 h 15 | M3, with traffic leaving London |
| Southampton Airport | 6 | 10 | 20 to 30 min | No direct bus or train to the terminals |
The drive from Heathrow is the most common. The M25 and M3 interchanges near Heathrow and Staines are the pinch points, and the stretch south of Winchester can slow on summer Fridays and Sundays when holiday traffic heads for the south coast. We recommend booking the pickup earlier than you think necessary on those days.
Chauffeur hire for the whole cruise week
Many cruise guests need more than one ride. A typical booking covers the airport pickup, the drive to the terminal, and the same thing in reverse two weeks later. Others add a night in London or Winchester before sailing, or a side trip to Salisbury and Stonehenge for the days either side. A multi-leg booking puts all of these on one confirmation and one invoice, and corporate accounts with monthly invoicing are available for group sailings and incentive trips.
For stops in the city, our London Heathrow page and London Gatwick page cover the airports in more detail, and our limousine hire pages explain hourly bookings.
Choosing a vehicle for a cruise
Count the bags first. An Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar) takes 3 passengers with 2 large and 2 cabin bags, which suits a couple on a short sailing, and the First Class Sedan (S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar) carries the same three with extra room. For a long voyage with formal wear and a family of four, the Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar) carries up to 6 passengers and 5 to 6 large bags. An Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter) carries up to 12 passengers and 12 bags. Mini-coaches and coaches of 20 to 56 seats, For special occasions or high-profile travel, Maybach, Rolls-Royce, stretch and armoured vehicles are available on request (availability confirmed at booking).
The fleet page shows each class.
How the Southampton transfer is delivered
British roads are covered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner. The Toronto desk at Onroutz.ca books it, confirms it, supports it and invoices it: one booking, one invoice, one 24/7 contact for flights, ship and driver. Partner vehicles are no more than 4 model years old, with an allowance of 7 for Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach. We do not own cars or offices in the UK.
Entry rules for the UK
Visitors from the USA, Canada, Australia and most of Europe need either a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter the UK, and the government's page lists the ETA fee as £20. Each traveller needs their own, including children and babies, and an ETA is needed if you pass through border control at a UK airport before continuing your journey. Apply only through the official site, gov.uk/guidance/electronic-travel-authorisation-eta, because look-alike sites charge more. Ask your cruise line whether your itinerary affects the requirement.

Frequently asked questions
How far is Southampton cruise port from Heathrow?
About 63 to 67 miles (102 to 108 km) by road, depending on the terminal. The drive usually takes 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30, and 2 hours or more in rush hour or when there is an incident on the M25 or M3.
How long does it take to get from Gatwick to Southampton cruise port?
About 80 to 85 miles (130 to 137 km), usually 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours via the M23, M25 and M3. Add time on summer Fridays and Sundays, when holiday traffic builds on the roads to the south coast.
Which Southampton cruise terminal will I use?
Southampton has five: QE II and Ocean in the Eastern Docks via Dock Gate 4, and City, Horizon and Mayflower in the Western Docks via Gate 10, with Mayflower drivers using Gate 20. Your cruise documents name your terminal; we match the drop-off.
Is there a direct train from Heathrow to Southampton?
There is no direct service. Trains need a change in London or at Reading, and a taxi from Southampton Central to the terminal. With cruise luggage, most guests find a private car simpler, particularly on embarkation day. Check National Rail for the current timetable before you travel.
What time should I arrive at the cruise terminal?
ABP advises passengers to arrive at their allocated time, which your cruise line sets. We count backward from that slot and from your flight, aiming to land you inside the window rather than ahead of it. The port also checks passengers at the entrance, so allow a few minutes there.
Do I need an ETA to visit the UK for a cruise?
Visitors from the USA and Canada usually need either a visa or an ETA, which the government lists at £20 per traveller. An ETA is needed if you pass through border control at a UK airport. Check with your cruise line for your itinerary.
How long is the wait if my flight lands late?
Free waiting begins at touchdown and lasts 60 minutes for international flights and 30 for domestic ones. If a late arrival threatens your boarding time, tell the desk early so it can reassess the schedule with you. For a flight into Heathrow, that allowance comfortably covers a long passport queue.
What is your cancellation policy?
More than 72 hours' notice: no charge. 72 hours or less: 10%. 48 hours or less: 50%. 24 hours or less, or a no-show: 100%, all counted from the scheduled pickup. Event bookings can carry their own deadline, always printed on the confirmation.
