LAX car service: why a pre-booked car matters here
Los Angeles International Airport is the one big U.S. airport where the standard pickup experience got worse before it got better. Since late 2019, taxis and ride apps no longer load at the terminal kerbs. They use a separate lot called LAX-it, reached on foot or by a free shuttle. A pre-booked LAX car service gets you around that step: the driver is tracked to your landing, you know who is meeting you, and the fare was fixed before you boarded in Toronto.
This page is the LAX airport page for Onroutz.ca. It covers the terminals, how the pickup system actually works, how long the main drives take, the transit options that exist today (the people mover has not opened yet), and when a private car is worth it. Onroutz.ca books and invoices the ride from Toronto. A vetted, licensed and commercially insured local partner drives it.
How do I get a car from LAX to my hotel?
Pre-book a private car and keep your phone on. Your driver tracks your flight, messages you the pickup point for your terminal, and drives you to the hotel for a fixed fare. Taxis and ride apps must use LAX-it, a separate lot just east of Terminal 1 with a free shuttle.
What LAX-it is, and why your car skips the queue
LAX-it is the centralised pickup area LAWA opened in 2019. It sits just east of Terminal 1 at the corner of World Way and Sky Way. Guests walk there from many terminals or ride a free shuttle that runs in a dedicated lane on the lower/arrivals level. Taxis, Uber, Lyft and Opoli load there, while drop-offs stay at the terminal kerbs on the upper/departures level. LAWA's announcement of LAX-it describes the design.
The queue is the part nobody wants. At busy times the walk, the shuttle and the app wait stack up. Chauffeured cars are managed differently from taxis and ride apps, and the confirmation we send gives your exact meeting point for your terminal.
The terminals
LAX has Terminals 1 through 8, the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) and a small regional terminal. International arrivals clear customs at Tom Bradley, and the car meets you after you exit. Flights from Toronto Pearson are the exception to know about: Pearson is one of ten Canadian airports with U.S. preclearance, so a pre-cleared flight lands in the United States as a domestic arrival. CBP's preclearance page lists the airports.
LAX transportation compared: car, rail, shuttle, taxi
The table is honest about what the cheaper modes cost you in time and effort. We have left out ride-app and taxi dollar figures because they swing with demand and distance.
| Mode | Door-to-door to central LA | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private car service (Onroutz.ca) | 40–90 min depending on the 405 | Fixed fare via booker | Everything, door to door | Groups, executives, families, late arrivals |
| LAX-it taxi | 45–100 min including queue and shuttle | Metered | Standard boot | Spontaneous solo arrivals |
| LAX-it ride app | 45–100 min including queue and shuttle | Surge-priced | Standard boot | Two travellers, light bags |
| Metro rail via the LAX/Metro Transit Center shuttle | 60–90 min | Public transit fare | You carry it all | Solo, one bag, near a rail line |
| Hotel courtesy shuttle | Varies with stops | Free if your hotel offers it | Per hotel | Airport-area hotels |
| People mover (SkyLink) | Not open yet | Planned as free | Not applicable | Wait for the opening |
The people mover is still not running
The SkyLink automated people mover was meant to remove the need for LAX-it. As of early October 2026 it has not opened. Local reporting says the latest projected start is January 2027, after a long testing phase (see FOX 11's report on the delay). Dates have slipped repeatedly, so plan your trip around today's system: LAX-it for taxis and apps, and a pre-arranged car for anyone who would rather not use it.
Rail: the Metro Transit Center station
Metro's LAX/Metro Transit Center station opened in June 2025, near Aviation Boulevard and 96th Street, and a shuttle runs between it and the terminals. It links to the C and K Lines. It works for a solo traveller with a single bag who is heading to a station-adjacent address. It does not work well for a family with checked luggage, and no rail line reaches Santa Monica, Beverly Hills or Hollywood in a way that beats a car door to door.
Drive times from LAX to the places travellers go
Distances are typical road distances; times assume ordinary traffic. Los Angeles traffic does not have a single rush hour. Weekday inbound traffic starts early, mid-afternoon builds toward the evening peak, and Friday is the worst day of the week.
| Destination | Road distance | Typical drive time | Rush-hour caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Santa Monica | about 13 km / 8 mi | 20–40 min | 60–75 min on weekday afternoons |
| Century City and Beverly Hills | about 22 km / 14 mi | 30–50 min | 60–90 min at 4–7 p.m. |
| Hollywood and West Hollywood | about 27 km / 17 mi | 35–60 min | 75–100 min at the evening peak |
| Downtown Los Angeles | about 29 km / 18 mi | 35–60 min | 75–100 min at the evening peak |
| Long Beach | about 29 km / 18 mi | 30–50 min | 60–80 min on the 405 and 710 |
| Disneyland, Anaheim | about 55 km / 34 mi | 45–75 min | 90–120 min on a Friday evening |
The corridors that decide your arrival
From the airport, Sepulveda Boulevard and Century Boulevard feed the 405 and 105 freeways. The 405 northbound towards the Westside and the Valley is a chokepoint at almost any weekday hour, and it is the first thing a local driver watches. A driver who knows the surface alternatives (Sepulveda, Lincoln, Pacific Coast Highway for beach cities) can save real time when the freeway turns solid.
If you are heading to Disneyland, see our dedicated LAX to Disneyland transfer page for the Orange County details.
Executive car service at LAX: when it is the right call
Business arrivals at LAX are about timing and privacy. A tracked pickup means the driver adjusts when the Toronto flight does; there is nothing to rebook. For meetings the same afternoon, the sensible move is to book the car for the landing time plus a buffer, not for the schedule on the ticket.
The car classes we use:
- Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar): up to 3 passengers, 2 large and 2 cabin bags
- First Class Sedan (S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar): up to 3 passengers
- Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar): up to 6 passengers, 5 to 6 large bags
- Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter): up to 12 passengers, 12 bags
Models are confirmed at booking. Ask for a Maybach, Rolls-Royce, stretch or armoured car and the desk confirms availability with the booking. Our executive car service page covers corporate accounts and monthly invoicing, and the fleet page lists every class.
Meet and greet at LAX
Name-board meet and greet is available on request. The driver waits inside arrivals with a board carrying your name or an alias for privacy, and walks you to the car. This suits first-time visitors, anyone arriving at Tom Bradley with a lot of baggage, and delegations where one person is leading the group. The airport meet and greet service explains how it works.
Waiting time after landing
Flight tracking is standard on every airport pickup. We include 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic one. Late-night arrivals from Asia and Europe often involve a long immigration queue at Tom Bradley, so tell us at booking if you are on a long-haul international flight.
Late arrivals, red-eyes and early departures
LAX works around the clock, and the red-eye flights from Toronto are common. Late at night the freeways are quick, but the arrivals kerb is quiet and the ride-app queue can still be long. With a pre-booked car you step out to a driver who has been tracking the flight since it left the gate.
For departures, the reverse matters. A hotel pickup in Beverly Hills or Hollywood needs a generous cushion before a morning flight because the 405 can fill by 6 a.m. Give yourself a realistic buffer. Our desk will advise you on the pickup time when you book.
Hollywood, film sets and the Westside
Los Angeles is the base for a lot of film, television and music work. Crews and talent often fly into LAX and head straight to studio lots in Burbank, Culver City and Hollywood. We support discreet transfers: Chauffeurs never photograph clients or post about trips, and will sign an NDA on request. For production schedules, an hourly car stays with you for the day. See our page on celebrity and talent transport for how we handle privacy.
Beach cities and the coast
Santa Monica, Venice, Manhattan Beach and Malibu sit in the opposite direction to downtown. Santa Monica is the nearest at about 13 km; Malibu lies further up the coast and is a separate trip. If you are staying at the coast, say so at booking so the driver chooses Lincoln or Pacific Coast Highway where it is faster than the freeway.
How booking and payment work
You book on our online booker with the pickup, drop-off, flight number and vehicle class. The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact trip before you pay. We then confirm the driver, the pickup point and a 24/7 contact. A vetted local partner delivers the ride; Onroutz.ca supports it from Toronto and invoices it as one booking.
US domestic trips are driven by US-licensed partners, and partner vehicles are no more than four model years old (Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach up to seven).
Cancellation terms
More than 72 hours' notice: no charge. 72 hours or less: 10%. 48 hours or less: 50%. 24 hours or less or a no-show: 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup. For large events the cut-off can differ, and the confirmation says so.
Other California and U.S. airports
If your trip includes the Bay Area or San Diego, see San Francisco SFO and San Diego. The U.S. region hub lists every American city we cover, and the airport transfers hub explains the service worldwide. Travellers who are also visiting Las Vegas can see the Las Vegas airport to Strip transfer.
Frequently asked questions
Can an Uber pick me up at LAX?
Yes, but not at the terminal kerb. Ride-app vehicles load at LAX-it, a lot just east of Terminal 1, reached on foot or by a free shuttle from the terminals. A pre-booked car service avoids the LAX-it step, because your driver is tracked to your flight and you receive a pickup point before you land.
Is there a train from LAX to downtown Los Angeles?
Not directly from the terminals. Metro's LAX/Metro Transit Center station is a short shuttle ride away and connects to the C and K Lines. The SkyLink people mover that will link the terminals to that station has not opened, and its latest projected opening is January 2027.
How long does it take to get from LAX to Hollywood?
About 27 km (17 mi), usually 35 to 60 minutes. The same trip can take 75 to 100 minutes in the evening peak or on a Friday. A tracked pickup lets the driver choose between the 405 and surface streets based on what traffic does when you land.
What is the best way to get from LAX to Santa Monica?
A private car is the most direct: about 13 km (8 mi), usually 20 to 40 minutes, longer on weekday afternoons. Taxis and ride apps work too but start at LAX-it. If you carry one light bag and are not rushed, a public bus along the Westside is possible but slow.
Do you offer meet and greet inside the terminal?
Yes, on request at booking. Your driver waits inside arrivals with a board showing your name, or an alias if you want privacy, and walks you to the car. We recommend it for first-time visitors, family groups and anyone landing at Tom Bradley International with a lot of luggage.
How much waiting time is included at LAX?
Sixty minutes free after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic landing. Every airport pickup is flight-tracked, so a delayed arrival moves the driver with it. Pre-cleared flights from Toronto Pearson land as domestic arrivals in the United States, so the 30-minute window applies to them.
How much is a car service from LAX?
It depends on your drop-off, the vehicle class and the date. The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay, so there is no meter and no surge. Taxi and ride-app prices are variable, which is why many travellers prefer a fixed quote.
Can you pick up a group from LAX in one vehicle?
Yes. The Luxury SUV takes up to 6 passengers with 5 to 6 large bags, and the Executive Sprinter takes up to 12 passengers with 12 bags. Larger parties can use a mini-coach or coach of 20 to 56 seats on request. Tell us the number of people and bags at booking.
