On most islands the airport is close to the hotels. St Lucia is the exception. Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) sits at the southern tip of the island, while the largest resort area at Rodney Bay is on the opposite end, 63 to 68 km away by a road that climbs, twists and slows through villages. Onroutz.ca arranges private St Lucia airport transfers with a licensed local driver, flight tracking and a fixed fare shown before you pay. This page sets out the distances, the choices and the practical points to expect on the drive.
How do St Lucia airport transfers work?
Give the booker your flight number and the name of your hotel. The Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto confirms the booking and assigns a vetted, licensed, commercially insured partner on the island. The driver tracks your flight, meets you at arrivals with a name board and takes you to your resort for the fare you were shown.
On St Lucia the ride is delivered by a local transfer partner, and the Toronto desk stays responsible for the booking, the confirmation and the invoice, with one 24/7 contact if something changes. Cars and vans from the partner are never more than four model years old. International arrivals include 60 minutes of free waiting after landing, a useful allowance when a wide-body flight from London or a clutch of flights from North America land together.
Because the drive can run to an hour and a half, the value of a private car is more concrete here than on most islands. You are not sharing a vehicle with passengers headed to different parts of the island, nobody stops to drop another family on the way, and the driver can pause for a comfort break or a photo of the Pitons if you ask.
Hewanorra (UVF) and the second airport at Castries
Hewanorra International Airport is in the Vieux Fort area at the southern tip of Saint Lucia, about 53 km (33 miles) from Castries. It handles long-haul and intercontinental jet service. A smaller airport, George F. L. Charles, sits in Castries and handles inter-Caribbean flights on regional propeller aircraft. If your ticket says St Lucia, check which airport it names; the two are on opposite sides of the island, and confusing them is expensive.
On arrival you clear immigration, collect your bags and go through customs. Your driver waits outside with a name board. If you prefer a driver who meets you in the arrivals hall, request a name-board meet and greet at booking, and use an alias on the board if you want privacy. The Government of Canada's advice is that taxis are available at the airports and do not use meters, which is one reason to pre-arrange the ride.
St Lucia airport to your hotel: distances and drive times
Most St Lucia journeys run along the east coast road through Micoud and Dennery to Castries and north to Rodney Bay, or along the west coast through Choiseul and Soufrière. Planning figures from Hewanorra:
- Soufrière and the Pitons: roughly 45 km (28 miles), usually 45 to 75 minutes on the west-coast road.
- Castries: about 53 km (33 miles), usually 1 h to 1 h 20.
- Marigot Bay: a little beyond Castries on the west side, usually 1 h 15 to 1 h 40.
- Rodney Bay, Gros Islet and Pigeon Island: about 63 to 68 km (39 to 42 miles), usually 1 h 15 to 1 h 40; transfer companies quote anywhere from 60 minutes to nearly two hours.
- Cap Estate and the far north: a further 10 to 15 minutes beyond Rodney Bay.
The variation is real. The road is winding and hilly, so a slow lorry, a school bus or a market-day crowd in a village can add 20 minutes. Allow the longer end of the range if you land after dark or if heavy rain falls.
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Registered airport taxi | 45–120 min depending on resort | Not metered; agree the fare first | Boot of a sedan or van | Arrivals with no booking |
| Resort or hotel shuttle | Varies by property | Often included in a package | Resort-handled | Package guests whose transfer fits their flight |
| Local minibus | Long, with many stops | Per-ride fare | Small bags only | Light travellers who know the routes |
| Rental car | 60–120 min plus the rental queue | Rental rate, fuel and a temporary licence | Own boot | Confident drivers on left-hand traffic |
| Ride-hailing app | Varies | App-set fare | Boot of a car | Short hops once you are on the island |
| Private transfer with Onroutz.ca | 45–100 min, direct to the door | Fixed fare via booker | Sedan to Sprinter | Families, honeymooners, groups and late flights |
The Government of Canada's advice says to use only registered taxis, which have a blue number plate, to agree the fare in advance and to carry small bills. It says regular minibus services are reliable but can be unsafe because of driving speeds, and that drivers do not always respect traffic laws. Traffic drives on the left. Visitors who rent a car need a temporary driving permit, which is available from most rental agencies, the airport immigration desk or a police station, and the legal rental age is 25.
For a first night in St Lucia, a long drive on unfamiliar left-hand roads in the dark is not the best way to start. A pre-booked driver who has made the trip hundreds of times is calmer, and the vehicle will have been checked and licensed.
Hewanorra to Rodney Bay, Gros Islet and Cap Estate
Rodney Bay is the island's busiest resort and marina area, and the destination of many arrivals. The drive passes through Vieux Fort, Micoud and Dennery, joins the main road toward Castries and continues north. The transfer usually takes 1 h 15 to 1 h 40, but it has no motorway shortcut, so the time depends on traffic around Castries in the afternoon. A morning arrival lets you miss the worst of it.
If your hotel is on the Pigeon Island causeway or in Cap Estate, tell the desk the property's name and the entrance. Some hotels have a side gate; some villas are down narrow lanes where a large vehicle cannot turn. The desk will match the vehicle to the lane. For a family with several suitcases, an SUV is a good all-round choice.
Hewanorra to Soufrière and the Pitons
Soufrière and the Pitons are reached by the south-west coast road, which climbs through hills with sharp turns and steep gradients. It is scenic and sometimes slow behind trucks and minibuses. Plan 45 to 75 minutes, and ask the driver for a stop at a viewpoint if you want one.
Resorts in the Soufrière area range from hillside villas to beachfront hotels, and some are accessed by steep private roads. Give the desk the property's full name, any instructions from the hotel and the villa gate code if applicable. If you are arriving for a wedding or a honeymoon, tell us so the timing can be planned around check-in.
Marigot Bay, Castries and cruise days
Castries is the capital and the cruise port, and Marigot Bay is a sheltered harbour south of the capital, with hotels on the hillside. Ships calling at Castries or Pointe Seraphine can generate crowds near the port, so if you are meeting a ship, tell the desk the vessel's name and berth. The wider cruise picture is on the cruise transfers hub. The drive from Hewanorra to Castries is about 53 km (33 miles) and usually takes just over an hour, though the route can be slower in the morning rush toward the capital.
Entry rules and the immigration form
Saint Lucia's tourism authority encourages all travellers arriving by air to complete the immigration form online before arrival, up to three days before travel. One form per family produces a QR code by email, and if you have not completed it before landing you can do it at the airport using the free Wi-Fi. See the official entry page. The Government of Canada's advice is that passports must be valid for at least three months beyond the date you expect to leave, tourists do not need a visa for stays of up to six weeks and customs may ask for a return ticket, proof of accommodation and proof of funds. The UK government's entry requirements give a maximum first stay of six weeks and ask you to make sure the border officer stamps your passport. Read the Government of Canada's Saint Lucia page before travel.
Time zone, hurricane season and weather
Saint Lucia is on Atlantic Standard Time all year, which is the same as Toronto in summer and one hour ahead in winter. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from early June to the end of November; if a storm threatens, airlines adjust early and the desk moves your pickup to your new arrival time.
Honeymoons, weddings and groups
Saint Lucia is a major destination for weddings and honeymoons, and the transfer is often the first photograph of the holiday. A First Class Sedan (S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar) takes up to 3 passengers; the Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar) takes up to 6 with 5 to 6 large bags; the Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter) takes up to 12 passengers and 12 bags. Coaches of 20 to 56 seats are available on request for larger wedding parties. The model in each class is "or similar" and fixed at booking. See the fleet.
Wedding groups often arrive on several flights over a day. We can build staggered pickups into one itinerary with one invoice; see weddings and wedding guest shuttles. Add a child, toddler or booster seat in the booking notes. If you want a driver for part of the stay, see personal driver.
For other Caribbean arrivals, see Montego Bay, Nassau and Punta Cana. Every destination is listed on the resort transfers hub, with a regional summary on Caribbean and Mexico. To see how the process works, read how private airport transfers work.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Rodney Bay from Hewanorra airport?
About 63 to 68 km (39 to 42 miles) by road, and the drive usually takes 1 h 15 to 1 h 40. Transfer companies quote anywhere from one hour to nearly two, because the road is winding and passes through villages. Allow the longer figure if you land at dusk or in rain.
How much is a taxi from Hewanorra airport?
Taxis on St Lucia are not metered, and the fare depends on the destination and the vehicle. The Government of Canada advises agreeing the fare in advance. Enter your pickup, drop-off and vehicle and the booker returns one fixed all-in fare before you pay.
Which airport do I fly into for Soufrière?
Hewanorra (UVF), which is the island's international jet airport at the south. Soufrière is roughly 45 to 75 minutes away by road. The George F. L. Charles airport at Castries handles regional propeller flights, so it is the wrong choice for most long-haul itineraries.
Do I need to fill in a form before I arrive in St Lucia?
Saint Lucia's tourism authority encourages air travellers to complete the immigration form online no more than three days before travel. One form per family produces a QR code by email. If you have not done it, you can complete it at the airport using free Wi-Fi.
Is the drive from the airport safe at night?
The Government of Canada describes road conditions as generally good but notes that drivers can be reckless and that minibuses may be driven at speed. The route is winding. A pre-booked driver who knows the road is a calmer alternative to hiring a car and navigating after dark.
Can I stop for groceries on the way?
Yes. Ask the desk to add a stop at a supermarket on the route, particularly if you are staying in a villa. Tell us the store or area and how long you need, and we will plan the time into the booking. The stop is on the same fixed-fare booking.
What if my flight to Hewanorra is late?
Tracking follows the aircraft, so the pickup shifts to when you really land. Included waiting runs 60 minutes from an international landing and 30 from a domestic one. If you will be much later than expected, message the 24/7 desk and we will adjust the booking.
