Athens has one international airport, Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH), and it sits out on the Mesogeia plain east of the city. Your hotel is almost certainly closer to the Acropolis than to the airport, so the transfer is a real trip: about 33 km to Syntagma Square, more if you are staying on the coast. This page lays out every sensible way to cover that distance and says plainly when the metro is the better choice. When it is not, Onroutz.ca sends a licensed local transfer partner to meet you and drive you to the hotel door.

What is the best way to get from Athens Airport to your hotel?

The fastest low-effort option is a private car: a driver waits at arrivals, tracks your flight, and takes you door to door in about 35 to 60 minutes. Metro Line 3 reaches Syntagma in roughly 40 minutes if your hotel is central and your bags are light. Taxis run a government-set flat fare to the inner ring.

The honest answer depends on four things: where the hotel is, what time you land, how many people are travelling, and how much luggage you have. A solo traveller with a carry-on and a hotel near a metro stop will do well on the train. A family of four landing at midnight with checked bags will not.

How far is each Athens hotel district from the airport?

All distances are road distances from the terminal, rounded, and all times assume normal traffic. Athens traffic is heaviest on weekday mornings and again from late afternoon, and the airport road is busy on Friday evenings and at the start and end of school holidays.

The transit operator publishes current timetables and fares on athenstransport.com, which also confirms that Ath.ena tickets and cards are valid for airport journeys. The same page lists Metro Line 3 trains on the airport section running every 30 minutes, shared with the suburban railway, and the metro network operating from about 05:30 to 00:30 with Lines 2 and 3 open until 01:30 on Friday and Saturday nights.

When the metro or the X95 is the better choice

Take the metro when your hotel is within a few minutes of Syntagma, Monastiraki, Acropolis or Evangelismos station, you land between the early morning and the evening, and you can carry your bags up and down stairs without strain. It is not affected by road traffic, and on a congested weekday afternoon it can beat any car.

Take the X95 when the metro has stopped for the night and you are travelling alone with modest luggage. It is the late-night public option into Syntagma; confirm its current hours on the transit site.

We would rather you take the metro on a bright Tuesday with a rucksack than book a car you do not need. The case for the private transfer is below.

When a private car wins

  • Three or more travellers. A single car covers everyone, with no splitting across fares or waiting for a second taxi.
  • Heavy or awkward luggage. Golf bags, strollers, wheelchairs, cases for a month-long trip. A Luxury SUV takes up to six passengers and five to six large bags; an Executive Sprinter takes up to 12 passengers.
  • Late or early arrivals. The driver tracks your flight, so a delayed landing at 23:40 still ends with a person at arrivals rather than a closed metro.
  • Children. Child, toddler and booster seats can be added at booking, which you cannot count on in a street taxi.
  • A hotel on a narrow street. Your driver knows the best vehicle access point for the address and will tell you where the car will stop.
  • Business schedules. A meeting at 10:00 after a 06:30 landing leaves no room for a train change or a rank queue.
  • Privacy. Some guests prefer a quiet car and a chauffeur who does not make conversation.

How the Athens transfer works with Onroutz.ca

Onroutz.ca is a transfer desk based in Toronto. Outside Toronto and the GTA, the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner in Greece, and Onroutz.ca books, confirms, supports and invoices it from Toronto: one booking, one confirmation, one invoice, one 24/7 contact. Partner vehicles are no more than four model years old.

What you can expect on the day:

  1. Your confirmation names the vehicle class (Executive Sedan, First Class Sedan, Luxury SUV, Executive Sprinter, or similar) and the meeting point.
  2. We track your flight from the moment it departs, so an early or late arrival moves the pickup with it.
  3. The driver holds a name board inside arrivals. If you prefer privacy, an alias name can go on the board.
  4. After an international landing there are 60 minutes of free waiting; after a domestic landing, 30. That covers passport control, baggage and a slow carousel.
  5. The driver loads your bags and drives you to the hotel entrance or the closest legal stop.

Book this transfer

Syntagma, Plaka and Monastiraki: the historic centre

These are the most popular areas and the most awkward for cars. Large parts of Plaka are pedestrianised or restricted to small vehicles, and many hotels there tell guests to walk the last few minutes from a street where vehicles can stop. Your driver will stop as close as local rules allow and, if needed, help you with the bags along the remaining stretch. Tell us your hotel's name and street at booking so the pickup note matches the real approach.

Check-in times matter too. Many hotels cannot offer a room before early afternoon, so a 07:00 arrival from a transatlantic flight often means a bag drop at reception. Mention it when you book and ask the hotel about early check-in.

Koukaki, Kolonaki and the hillside hotels

Koukaki, just south of the Acropolis, has a cluster of small hotels on short, one-way streets, and the car usually has to approach from a particular direction. Kolonaki, the upscale neighbourhood under Lycabettus Hill, is steep and compact, and parking is scarce. A driver who knows the district will choose the approach that avoids a loop. Neither area is hard to reach, but both reward a driver with local knowledge over a satellite-navigation guess.

The Athens Riviera: Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza

If you are staying on the coast, the transfer follows the airport motorway and then cuts south to the shore road. The Athens Riviera has beach clubs, marinas and larger resort hotels with proper driveways, so a car can pull right up to reception. On summer weekend evenings the coastal road can be slow. Public transport there means a tram from the city centre after getting into town first, so for Riviera hotels a pre-booked car or a taxi is the realistic choice.

Piraeus: ferries and cruise ships

Piraeus is Greece's main port, and the airport-to-port transfer is its own journey of about 45 km. The port authority publishes cruise and coastal terminal information at olp.gr. Many travellers land in Athens, spend a night, and move to the port the next morning for an island ferry or a cruise embarkation. If you are doing that, ask for a multi-leg booking so airport, hotel and port are on one confirmation. A car is especially useful on embarkation day, when luggage, timing and the right terminal gate all matter. See the Athens airport page for the airport side of the story.

Night, early morning and delayed flights

Athens receives many late and early international arrivals. A few rules of thumb:

  • After the last metro. The metro closes shortly after midnight, so a 00:30 landing means a taxi, the X95 or a pre-booked car.
  • Delays. Because your flight is tracked, a delay does not cancel the pickup. The driver adjusts, and the free-waiting clock starts at actual landing, not scheduled landing.
  • Rebooked flights. Tell the 24/7 desk and the pickup is moved.

Luggage, families and groups

Athens summers are hot, and a loaded taxi in July is a poor place to be. A Luxury SUV, with water and phone charging in most vehicles, is comfortable for a family of five with luggage. An Executive Sprinter handles groups of up to 12 and 12 bags; for larger parties, mini-coaches and coaches from 20 to 56 seats are available on request. If you are bringing a wedding party or an incentive group, the corporate meetings guide covers how we handle multi-vehicle arrivals, and our Sprinter van with driver page explains the group option in detail.

Roads, tolls and traffic

The usual route runs along the Attiki Odos toll motorway toward the centre. The motorway is tolled, and in a private transfer the fixed fare is quoted all-in, so you do not need to carry cash or manage a toll tag. Peak times are worth knowing: weekday mornings into the city, weekday evenings out of it, Friday afternoons, and the start of public holidays. On those days, allow the upper end of the 35 to 60 minute range.

Entry rules before you land

Greece is in the Schengen Area. Check what your passport requires well before departure, because rules for non-EU visitors are changing. The EU has been phasing in its Entry/Exit System at external borders and plans a travel authorisation system for visa-exempt visitors; the European Union explains the current status at travel-europe.europa.eu. We cannot check your documents for you, and a delay at passport control is covered by the free waiting time, but it is better to land with the right paperwork.

Reserve your car

Pair this with the rest of your trip

Greece is rarely a single stop. If you are connecting to Italy, see the Rome airport-to-hotel transfer; for the full list of European cities we cover, start at the Europe hub. All of our hotel transfer pages sit under hotel transfers, and the broader picture of how private cars compare with taxis and ride apps is in our airport transfer versus taxi versus rideshare guide. If you want help building a multi-city itinerary, the travel desk can sequence the legs.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get from Athens Airport to the city centre?

By road, about 35 to 60 minutes to Syntagma, depending on the hour. Metro Line 3 takes roughly 40 minutes, plus the walk to your hotel. Peak weekday hours and Friday evenings sit at the upper end of the range, so allow extra if you have a fixed commitment.

What is the cheapest way from Athens Airport to the hotel?

The public options, the metro and the express bus, are the lowest-cost routes, and the transit authority sets their fares. A private car is a fixed-fare service quoted before you book. It makes sense when you are three or more, carrying a lot, travelling late or with children.

How much is a taxi from Athens Airport to the centre?

Taxis run a flat fare to the inner ring of Athens, higher between midnight and 05:00, and the amount has been revised several times in recent years. Read the current figure on the airport's official taxi page before you travel, and confirm it with the driver. Our fare for a private car is the one shown in the booker.

Can I get a private transfer from Athens Airport to my hotel for a late arrival?

Yes. Your flight is tracked, the driver waits inside arrivals, and international arrivals receive 60 minutes of free waiting. If the flight is badly delayed or rebooked, the 24/7 desk moves the pickup. Metro service stops shortly after midnight, so a pre-booked car is the dependable choice for late landings.

Will the driver wait if my flight is delayed or I am slow through passport control?

The free waiting clock starts at actual landing: 60 minutes after an international arrival and 30 minutes after a domestic one. That normally covers immigration and baggage. For other pickups, such as a hotel departure, the free wait is 15 minutes.

Can the car take me straight from the airport to Piraeus port?

Yes. The airport to Piraeus run is about 45 km and usually takes 45 to 70 minutes. Tell us your ferry or cruise ship and sailing time at booking, and we will help plan the arrival window. For cruise embarkation days, build in a generous margin rather than a tight connection.

Can you provide a child seat?

Add a child seat at booking; infant, toddler and booster sizes are available. Tell us the ages and weights of your children so the correct seat is installed before the car arrives. Do not wait until arrivals to ask, because seats cannot be added on the kerb.

What is your cancellation policy?

More than 72 hours' notice: no charge. 72 hours or less: 10%. 48 hours or less: 50%. 24 hours or less, or a no-show: 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup. Peak events occasionally use a different cut-off, which is stated on the confirmation.

Who drives the car in Athens?

A vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner drives the vehicle. Onroutz.ca books, confirms, supports and invoices the transfer from Toronto, so you deal with one desk and receive one invoice. Partner vehicles are no more than four model years old.
