Pearson Airport to downtown Toronto: distance and time
Pearson Airport to downtown Toronto is about 27 km (17 mi) by road. Off-peak the drive takes 30 to 40 minutes; in weekday rush hour or after a big event it can stretch to 60 minutes or more. The UP Express train takes about 25 to 28 minutes to Union Station, whatever the traffic.
Most visitors who search for Toronto airport transportation want one answer: what is the quickest, least confusing way into the core? There are four real choices. A train, a bus plus subway, a metered or flat-rate taxi, and a pre-booked private car. Each has a day when it wins, and this page lays them out honestly before it makes the case for ours.
Toronto Pearson sits in Mississauga, west of the city. Downtown Toronto, meaning the Financial District, the Entertainment District, Union Station, the Harbourfront and the area around the CN Tower, lies to the south-east. The road you take is almost always Highway 427 south, then the Gardiner Expressway east, with Highway 401 as the inland alternative. The train bypasses all of it.
Every way from Pearson to downtown Toronto compared
The figures below come from the operators' own sites where a price is shown, written as of 2026. Door-to-door times assume you have cleared customs and collected your bags.
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private car (Onroutz.ca) | 40 to 75 min including the walk to the car | Fixed fare via the booker, quoted before you pay | Boot plus cabin space, no carrying on stairs | Groups of 3+, heavy bags, children, late arrivals, business schedules |
| UP Express train | 45 to 60 min including walks to the platform and then to your hotel | Adult single ticket $12.35 as of 2026; children 12 and under free | Carried on board, racks near the doors | One or two travellers with light bags, rush hour |
| TTC 900 Airport Express then subway | 70 to 100 min | Standard TTC single fare, $3.30 with PRESTO or tap as of 2026 | You carry everything, subway stairs and crowding | Solo travellers watching every dollar |
| Licensed taxi | 40 to 75 min | Flat rate to Toronto destinations, shown on the airport's fare estimator | Boot, driver helps | Short stays, no pre-booking |
| Rideshare | 45 to 80 min including the wait at the pickup zone | Surge-priced, varies by minute | Depends on the car sent | Flexible arrivals, no fixed car class needed |
Rideshare vehicles use their own signed zones, kept apart from pre-arranged cars. At busy banks of arrivals the wait for a match can eat the time a private car would have saved.
Toronto airport transportation by train: the UP Express
The UP Express is the honest rival, and it is good. It runs between the airport and Union Station every 15 minutes, with two brief stops at Weston and Bloor on the way. The operator's arrivals guide puts the ride at about 25 minutes from Pearson to Union, and the schedule pages show 28 minutes, so plan on the longer figure.
The station is in Terminal 1. From Terminal 3 you take the free Link Train, which takes about two minutes, and follow the signs to the platform. From Terminal 1 you follow "Train to City" signs up two levels. The adult single ticket is $12.35 as of 2026, children 12 and under ride free, and tapping with PRESTO is discounted.
The first train toward Pearson leaves Union at 4:55 a.m. and the last at 1:00 a.m. In the other direction, the first train from Pearson leaves at 5:27 a.m. on weekdays and 6:24 a.m. on weekends and holidays; the last is at 12:54 a.m. Pages disagree by a few minutes, so confirm in the UP Express app on the day.
The catch is the second half of the journey. Union Station is a 10 to 20 minute walk or a short ride from most downtown hotels, and that last stretch is on you, with your bags. If your hotel is within a few minutes' walk of Union, the train is hard to beat. If it is in Yorkville or on the waterfront, you are adding a taxi or subway ride.
The TTC: route 900 and what it costs in time
The cheapest route is the 900 Airport Express bus, which serves Terminal 1 (ground level) and then Terminal 3 (arrivals level) before running to Kipling Station on subway Line 2. The TTC lists 20 to 25 minutes on the bus and service roughly from 5:30 a.m. to 2 a.m., Monday to Saturday, with a later Sunday start.
You then ride Line 2 to St George, change to Line 1, and head south to the downtown stop you want. The fare is a single TTC fare, $3.30 with PRESTO or a tapped card and $3.35 cash as of 2026, and cash fares do not include the two-hour transfer.
It works. It is also the option where stairs, escalators and a rush-hour car matter most. With a cabin bag, fine. With two large suitcases and a stroller, it is the one we would talk you out of.
Taxi and rideshare from Pearson to downtown Toronto
Licensed airport taxis charge a flat rate to Toronto destinations, and the airport says there is no surge pricing on them. The amount depends on where in the city you are going, so use the fare estimator on the airport's website rather than a number from a blog. A street-hailed taxi or one from a stand uses the City-regulated meter, which is a different calculation.
Rideshare is surge-priced and moves with demand, so the same trip can cost very different amounts at 7 a.m. on a Monday and 2 p.m. on a Sunday. We do not quote rideshare amounts because we cannot verify them, and no public source lists a fixed one.
If a taxi works for you, it is a reasonable choice for one or two people with ordinary luggage. The weakness is predictability. You queue, you do not choose the vehicle class, and you do not know the driver is waiting for your specific flight.
When a private car is the better call
The private car earns its place in a handful of clear situations:
- Three or more travellers. The train is charged per person; a car is one fixed fare for the vehicle.
- Heavy luggage or sports gear. No platform changes, no stairs, no carrying.
- Children. Child, toddler and booster seats are available on request when you book, which a taxi cannot promise.
- Late or very early flights. UP Express does not run through the night, and a delayed flight can land after the last train.
- Business schedules. A driver who tracks your flight, a car that is already at the kerb and an arrival at the hotel door matter when you have a meeting the next morning.
- Privacy. A name-board meet and greet can use an alias name on the board.
If none of those apply and you are travelling light between 6 a.m. and midnight, take the train and enjoy the 25 minutes. We would rather tell you that than have you book a car you do not need. For a wider comparison see airport transfer versus taxi versus rideshare.
Where your car meets you at Pearson
Pearson separates pre-arranged vehicles from taxis and from rideshare, and the terminals differ. Your Onroutz.ca confirmation names the pickup point for your terminal, and your chauffeur's contact details arrive before you land.
Flight tracking is on every airport pickup, so a late arrival does not mean a missed car. After an international landing you have 60 minutes of free waiting; after a domestic landing, 30 minutes. That window is deliberately generous because customs and baggage at Pearson can run long on busy evenings. Name-board meet and greet inside arrivals is available on request when you book.
Terminal-by-terminal details sit on the Toronto Pearson airport page, which also links the other Pearson routes, such as the Pearson to Union Station transfer.
The drive: Highway 427, the Gardiner and the hours that matter
The usual line is Highway 427 south to the Gardiner Expressway east. The Gardiner brings you into the downtown core along the lakeshore, with exits at Spadina, York and Jarvis. The inland alternative uses Highway 401 east and then south on the Don Valley Parkway, which suits destinations in the east end and Yorkville better.
Timing matters more than distance:
- Weekdays, 6:30 to 9:30 a.m.: the inbound Gardiner is slowest. Add 20 to 30 minutes.
- Weekdays, 3:30 to 7:00 p.m.: the Gardiner and the 427 are slow in both directions.
- Event nights: a concert or a game at the arena or the stadium near Union can freeze the streets south of Front for an hour on either side.
- Late evening and early morning: often 25 to 30 minutes door to door.
Your chauffeur chooses the route on the day with live traffic in mind, and the fare does not change if they take the other highway.
Dropping off at downtown Toronto hotels and venues
The core is compact, and most drop-offs are easy. The big hotels near Front Street and Union Station include the Fairmont Royal York. In the Financial District and the Entertainment District you will find Shangri-La Toronto and The Ritz-Carlton Toronto, and along the waterfront the Westin Harbour Castle. Yorkville, a little north, has the Four Seasons Hotel Toronto. Every hotel has a different entrance for arrivals, and some have a separate side door for luggage. Tell us which door you want and we pass it to the chauffeur.
Convention visitors usually need the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, which sits beside the CN Tower and the stadium. If you are coming for a major event, see the Toronto Convention Centre page and the downtown hotel transfers page for entrances and timing advice.
Late arrivals, delays and first-time visitors
If you land late, the car waits. If you are tired after a long-haul flight, the car is the less demanding choice. If it is your first visit, a chauffeur can point out the CN Tower as it appears on the skyline from the Gardiner. For passport, eTA and customs questions on the way in, our arriving in Toronto guide for international travellers walks through the process terminal by terminal.
For corporate travellers, multi-leg itineraries can go on one booking: the airport run in, a morning at the office, an evening dinner and the return to Pearson. Corporate accounts with monthly invoicing are available. See our executive car service page for how those trips are set up.
Airport transportation Toronto: booking a fixed fare
The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay. You pick the class: an Executive Sedan for up to three passengers, a First Class Sedan for up to three, a Luxury SUV for up to six, or an Executive Sprinter for up to 12, all "or similar", with the exact model confirmed at booking. The fleet page lists each with its bag capacity.
Cancellation is straightforward. More than 72 hours' notice is free; 72 hours or less is 10%; 48 hours or less is 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show is 100%, all counted from the scheduled pickup.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi from the airport to downtown Toronto?
Licensed airport taxis use flat rates to Toronto destinations with no surge pricing, and the rate depends on your zone. Pearson has a fare estimator on its website. A taxi picked up from a street stand uses the metered City rate instead. For our own fixed fare, the booker quotes it before you pay.
Where does the train from Pearson Airport go?
The UP Express runs from Pearson Terminal 1 to Union Station in downtown Toronto, with brief stops at Weston and Bloor. Trains leave every 15 minutes and the trip takes about 25 to 28 minutes. At Union Station you connect to the subway, GO Transit and VIA Rail.
What is the closest airport to Toronto downtown?
Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport on the waterfront is the closest to the downtown core. Pearson, in Mississauga, is the main international airport and is about 27 km from downtown. See our page for Billy Bishop if you are flying there instead.
What's the cheapest way to get to Pearson Airport?
The TTC bus is the cheapest public option, with a single fare of $3.30 on PRESTO as of 2026. The 900 Airport Express runs from Kipling Station on subway Line 2. It is slow with luggage and it needs a transfer, which is why many travellers choose the train or a pre-booked car.
How much is the train from Pearson Airport to downtown Toronto?
An adult single ticket on the UP Express is $12.35 as of 2026, and children 12 and under travel free. A discounted PRESTO rate applies. The fare is per person, so for three or four travellers a fixed-fare car can be comparable, and it goes to your hotel door.
Is there a shuttle from Toronto Pearson Airport to downtown Toronto?
There is no single shuttle that serves all downtown hotels. Options are the UP Express train, the TTC 900 bus with a subway transfer, and private cars. Some hotels run their own courtesy shuttles, so ask yours before you travel. Private transfers can go straight to the front door.
Is a private car faster than the UP Express from Pearson?
Not always. The train takes 25 to 28 minutes whatever the traffic, while a car takes 30 to 40 minutes off-peak and an hour or more at rush hour. The car is faster door to door when your hotel is away from Union Station, or when you have luggage to manage.
What happens if my flight is late?
Your chauffeur tracks the flight and adjusts. After an international landing, 60 minutes of waiting are free; after a domestic landing, 30. Because your pickup time follows the flight, not the original schedule, a delay does not need a phone call or a rebooking.
