Puerto Vallarta's airport is very close to the nearest resorts, and that is both its appeal and its trap. The airport sits at the northern edge of town, so Marina Vallarta and the Hotel Zone are minutes away, while the Old Town is a longer crawl south and Punta Mita and Sayulita are an hour north across a state line. Onroutz.ca arranges private Puerto Vallarta airport transportation for all of them, with a licensed local driver, flight tracking and a fixed fare shown before you pay. This page explains the geography, the choices and the time-zone quirk that confuses visitors who cross into Nayarit.
How does Puerto Vallarta airport transportation work?
Start on the booker with your flight details and hotel name. The Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto confirms the booking and assigns a vetted, licensed, commercially insured local partner. The driver tracks your flight, meets you at arrivals with a name board and drives to your hotel, villa or marina for the fare you were shown.
The ride is delivered by a local transfer partner in Jalisco or Nayarit, and the Toronto desk remains the single point of contact: one booking, one confirmation, one invoice and one 24/7 line if plans change. Vehicles supplied by the partner are no older than four model years. The confirmation lists pickup instructions, and the driver's name follows once assigned.
International arrivals include 60 minutes of free waiting after landing. That window is useful at PVR, where several flights from Canada and the United States often land in a cluster and the immigration hall fills at once. If you want the driver to meet you inside arrivals instead of at the exit, ask for a name-board meet and greet when you book, and use an alias on the board if you prefer.
Puerto Vallarta airport (PVR): terminals and location
Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport is run by Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico. The operator says it is 7.5 km from the city of Puerto Vallarta, at Km 7.5 on the highway to Tepic, and about 10 miles from Nuevo Vallarta in the neighbouring state of Nayarit. The airport sits about one kilometre north of Marina Vallarta. See the operator's Puerto Vallarta airport page for terminal details.
The existing terminal has a domestic concourse and a separate international concourse reached by a walkway, with 15 gates on the international side. A second terminal has been under construction since 2022. Your confirmation states the terminal we expect, and flight tracking updates it if the airline changes it.
The Government of Canada's advice for Mexico is to use only officially marked taxis, avoid hailing street taxis and, for airport taxis paid by card, to prepay at the designated area. The UK government warns that fake immigration officers can operate in international airports and says to refuse offers of help. After immigration and customs, walk through the hall without stopping, and find the name board.
Puerto Vallarta airport to your hotel: distances and drive times
Planning figures from the terminal:
- Marina Vallarta: about 1 to 5 km (under 3 miles), usually 5 to 15 minutes.
- Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera): about 5 to 10 km (3 to 6 miles), usually 10 to 25 minutes.
- Downtown, the Malecón and Zona Romántica (Old Town): about 10 to 14 km (6 to 9 miles), usually 25 to 45 minutes.
- Conchas Chinas, Mismaloya and Boca de Tomatlán: a further 15 to 30 minutes south of Old Town.
- Nuevo Vallarta: about 16 km (10 miles) north, usually 15 to 25 minutes.
- Bucerías, Punta Mita and Sayulita: roughly 40 to 70 minutes depending on the destination and the day.
The only road between most of these places is the coastal highway, which becomes a city boulevard at the south end. Traffic through the centre and along the Malecón can double the time on a cruise-ship day or on a Friday evening. The villages of Yelapa and Las Ánimas are reachable only by boat, so a transfer ends at a pier at Boca de Tomatlán or Los Muertos, and a water taxi completes the trip.
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Airport taxi | 10–60 min depending on zone | Zone-based fare sold at the airport; not metered | Boot of a sedan or van | Arrivals with no booking |
| Shared shuttle van | 45–120 min with several drop-offs | Per-seat, pooled | About one bag each | Solo travellers with open schedules |
| Local city bus | 30–75 min with stops | Per-ride fare | Small bags only | Light travellers going to Old Town |
| Rental car | 20–70 min plus the rental queue | Rental rate, fuel and insurance | Own boot | Visitors exploring up the coast |
| Hotel or resort shuttle | Varies by property | Set by the hotel | Hotel-handled | Properties with an in-house airport service |
| Private transfer with Onroutz.ca | 10–70 min, direct to the door | Fixed fare via booker | Sedan to Sprinter | Groups, families, villas and late flights |
A taxi is the quick answer if you arrive without a plan. Fares are agreed or sold by zone, and the exercise takes time at the kiosk after a long flight. The city bus is slow, and it requires leaving the terminal and walking to the road with luggage. The shared van is an afternoon activity; if your hotel is last on the list, you will see much of Banderas Bay before you arrive. A private car pays off with groups of three or more, with children, with a villa that is hard to find, or when your flight lands late.
The time-zone line between Jalisco and Nayarit
Puerto Vallarta is in Jalisco, which keeps Central time, and the neighbouring state of Nayarit is mostly an hour behind, on Pacific time. Visitors crossing the state line expect to lose an hour. They do not, around Banderas Bay: the municipality of Bahía de Banderas, which includes Nuevo Vallarta, Bucerías, Punta Mita and Sayulita, moved to Central time in 2010. It matches Puerto Vallarta all year, and Mexico ended daylight saving time in 2022. The hour difference applies to the rest of Nayarit, such as the state capital, which most holiday itineraries do not visit.
Time zones matter because dinner reservations, boat tours and your flight home all use local time. If a tour operator in Sayulita or a host on the Riviera Nayarit quotes a time, confirm which clock they mean. The pickup for the airport is always in local time at the pickup address, and the confirmation says so.
Nuevo Vallarta, Bucerías, Punta Mita and Sayulita
North of the airport, the coast belongs to Riviera Nayarit. Nuevo Vallarta, renamed Nuevo Nayarit by the state government in 2022, is about 15 minutes from the airport in light traffic and is a gated resort district with canals, marinas and large all-inclusives. Bucerías, La Cruz de Huanacaxtle and Punta Mita follow, each farther up the highway. Punta Mita is the end of a peninsula with golf courses and large villas; Sayulita is a surf town with narrow streets.
The last mile matters more than the highway. Punta Mita resorts sit behind long private roads, villas in Sayulita are often on cobbled or dirt lanes and some streets are one-way or pedestrian. Give the desk the property's full name and the host's contact details. If you want groceries before arrival, ask the desk to add a supermarket stop in Nuevo Vallarta or Bucerías and allow extra time. A Sprinter or Luxury SUV is the sensible vehicle for a group with surfboards or golf clubs.
Old Town, the Malecón and the south shore
South of the airport, the hotel strip becomes the Malecón and the cobbled streets of the Zona Romántica. The driver can stop at the nearest accessible point, and a porter completes the last stretch if the street is closed to cars. Some boutique hotels have no loading zone, so tell the desk the hotel's name, the street and which side of the Cuale river it sits on.
If you are heading further south to Conchas Chinas, Mismaloya or Boca de Tomatlán, the road is narrow and winding along the coast, with sharp bends. Allow time for slow traffic behind buses and tour vans. For boat-access villages, the plan is a car to the pier, a scheduled boat and, for the return, a pickup arranged for the time the boat docks, not the time you leave the village.
Cruise days and marinas
Puerto Vallarta is a cruise port as well as a resort airport. If you are meeting a ship, tell the desk the ship's name and the arrival time, and we will plan around the boarding cut-off. For general cruise logistics, see cruise transfers. If you are joining a yacht or charter boat, give the desk the marina and berth and the driver will go to the right dock.
Entry paperwork, safety and weather
Air arrivals in Mexico fill in the digital immigration form (FMMD) and should keep it to prove their status. The Government of Canada says tourist visas are not required for stays of up to 180 days, and the UK government explains how to download digital proof of entry. Read the Government of Canada's Mexico page and the UK government's Mexico entry requirements before you fly. The Quintana Roo visitor tax does not apply in Jalisco or Nayarit.
The Canadian advice recommends avoiding travel after dark where possible and using toll roads and highways, and it lists a Canadian consular agency in Puerto Vallarta that covers the coasts of Jalisco, Colima and Nayarit. The eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from mid-May to the end of November, and late summer and early autumn are the riskier weeks; storms can close the airport or the highway, and the desk can move your pickup when flight tracking shows the new arrival.
Vehicles, child seats and groups
The Executive Sedan takes up to 3 passengers with 2 large and 2 cabin bags, and the First Class Sedan takes up to 3. Six travellers with five or six large bags fit the Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar). Larger parties take the Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter), which carries 12 passengers and 12 bags, with coaches on request. Models are "or similar" and confirmed at booking. See the fleet.
Car seats for every age group can be requested in advance. Wedding parties on Banderas Bay often arrive in waves; see weddings and wedding guest shuttles for staggered pickups. Frequently asked questions
How far is Puerto Vallarta airport from the Hotel Zone and Old Town?
The Hotel Zone is about 5 to 10 km (3 to 6 miles), usually 10 to 25 minutes. The Old Town and Zona Romántica are about 10 to 14 km (6 to 9 miles), usually 25 to 45 minutes. The airport operator puts the city centre at 7.5 km, although traffic makes the time longer than the distance suggests.
How much is a taxi from Puerto Vallarta airport?
It depends on the zone and the vehicle, and taxis sell fares by zone or agree them with the driver. Our booker prices the exact route and vehicle you choose and shows that all-in fare before payment. Canada's advice is to prepay for card-paid airport taxis at the designated area.
Do I lose an hour going from Puerto Vallarta to Nuevo Vallarta or Sayulita?
No. The municipality of Bahía de Banderas, which includes Nuevo Vallarta, Bucerías, Punta Mita and Sayulita, uses the same time as Puerto Vallarta. Most of the rest of Nayarit is one hour behind. Mexico also ended daylight saving time in 2022, so the offset does not change in summer.
Can you take me to Sayulita or Punta Mita from the airport?
Yes. Sayulita and Punta Mita are about 40 to 70 minutes from the airport depending on the destination and traffic. Give the desk the full property name and any gate or villa instructions. A Sprinter or SUV is the better choice for a group with surfboards or golf clubs.
Is there a bus from Puerto Vallarta airport?
City buses run on the highway outside the airport, but they require a walk with luggage and make many stops. For a first arrival, a pre-booked car or an official taxi is easier. We cannot confirm the current bus fares, so check locally if you plan to use one.
Is it safe to travel from Puerto Vallarta airport at night?
The Government of Canada advises avoiding travel after dark where possible and using only officially marked taxis. A pre-booked private transfer follows that advice, because the driver and vehicle are assigned and shown on your confirmation. The airport road and the Hotel Zone are main routes, but the final villa lanes can be dark.
Will the driver wait if my flight lands late?
Tracking moves the pickup to your actual landing time. After an international landing the first 60 minutes of waiting are free; after a domestic landing, 30. If you expect a long delay, message the 24/7 desk and we will move the booking.
