Chicago is a city where the airport journey is half the trip. O'Hare, one of the busiest airports in the United States, sits about 27 km (17 mi) northwest of the Loop; Midway lies about 16 km (10 mi) southwest. Between them and the downtown hotels run expressways that jam on a Tuesday afternoon, trains that are inexpensive and sometimes slow, and winter weather that rewrites any schedule. This page explains how limousine service in Chicago works in practice: the airport pickup rules, the public alternatives with official fares, the hourly and event uses of a chauffeured car, and how to book through Onroutz.ca.
Onroutz.ca is a Toronto-based booking desk. Chicago rides are delivered by vetted, licensed and commercially insured Illinois partners and are booked, confirmed, supported and invoiced by our desk in Toronto, so you have one confirmation, one invoice and one contact from booking to drop-off. Partner vehicles are no more than four model years old.
What does Chicago limousine service cover?
Chicago limousine service means pre-booked chauffeured rides: O'Hare and Midway airport transfers, suburb-to-airport trips, hourly hire for meetings and evenings, and group transport for conventions and events. Every ride is arranged in advance, with the driver tracking your flight and a fixed fare shown before you pay.
In Chicago, this is also how the law frames it. Under the rules of the city's Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP), livery rides must be prearranged by phone, text, email or app and cannot be street-hailed. Drivers need a City of Chicago public chauffeur licence, and livery vehicles carry insurance that names the city as an additional insured.

How far, and how long, honestly
O'Hare is about 27 km (17 mi) from the Loop. Midway is about 16 km (10 mi). The CTA's own chart gives O'Hare taxi and rideshare trips as 25 to 90 minutes, and Midway trips as 15 to 40 minutes, which shows how variable the roads are.
- O'Hare, off-peak: 35–50 minutes via the Kennedy Expressway (I-90/94).
- O'Hare, weekday rush: 60–90 minutes in the inbound direction in the morning and outbound after 4 pm.
- Midway, off-peak: 20–30 minutes via the Stevenson (I-55) or Cicero Avenue.
- Midway, rush hours: 35–50 minutes.
- Winter storms: de-icing, plowing and crashes can double any figure; allow a wide margin.
The driver chooses between the Kennedy, the Eisenhower and surface routes based on the live picture, and the right choice changes by the hour.
Where to meet your driver
Both airports run a controlled system for livery vehicles, and the Chicago Department of Aviation publishes the rules.
- O'Hare: pre-arranged pickups are made in the lower-level center lane, lane 2, outside baggage claim. The airport says wait times are 5 to 20 minutes after you call and that livery parking is across from each terminal, about a 5 to 7 minute walk. O'Hare has Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 5.
- Midway: limousines load on the lower level center lane at Doors 1 and 2, typically 3 to 10 minutes after you call, with livery parking a 5 to 7 minute walk away.
An Onroutz.ca driver follows your flight and is in position before you reach the curb. Where the airport allows, drivers meet passengers in baggage claim with a name board, or an alias board on request. Your confirmation states the meeting point. Waiting is free for 60 minutes after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic one, and 15 minutes on other pickups.
If you are flying from Toronto Pearson or Billy Bishop, you have already cleared US customs through CBP preclearance and land as a domestic passenger, so the walk to the car is quick.
Why book Chicago limousine service rather than ride the train
The CTA Blue Line is a useful service, running around the clock from O'Hare through the Loop. A taxi stand is easy to find. The reasons to pre-book a Chicago car are more specific:
- Three or more travellers or lots of luggage. The Blue Line does not carry trunks well.
- Winter. In snow and ice, a driver who knows the roads and a fixed fare beat waiting outside.
- Late arrivals. The Orange Line does not run overnight, and the airports thin out.
- Business schedules. A set pickup time and flight tracking reduce uncertainty.
- Suburbs. Destinations in Naperville, Oak Brook, Schaumburg, Evanston or the North Shore are not on a train line from the airport.
- Children. Infant carriers, toddler seats and boosters are available; request them when you book.
Hourly hire and city days
An hourly car stays with you. Typical uses in Chicago:
- Meeting days: the Loop, River North, Fulton Market and the suburbs in a single day.
- Evenings: theatre, dinner and a late return to the hotel without parking in the Loop.
- Weddings and events: guest shuttles and the couple's car; see our events hub.
- Sightseeing: the lakefront, Navy Pier, the Magnificent Mile and the architecture districts.
Hourly hire is priced for your date, time and vehicle in the booker. We do not publish rate cards because demand varies by season and event.
Winter, wind and the lake
From November to March, Chicago weather is the biggest variable in any airport run. Snow slows the Kennedy and the Dan Ryan, freezing rain closes ramps and strong lake winds delay landings, which is why flight tracking matters here more than in many cities. If your flight is diverted or held, the pickup follows the actual landing instead of the schedule. Three habits help: leave earlier for departures than the clock suggests, keep a charged phone and the confirmation message handy, and tell the desk if your plans change so the driver can adjust before reaching the airport.
Beyond the Loop: suburbs and day trips
Many Chicago journeys never touch the downtown core. Common runs include O'Hare to Rosemont and Schaumburg, Midway to Oak Lawn and the south suburbs, the airports to Evanston and the North Shore, and to Naperville, Oak Brook and Lombard in DuPage County. Longer trips north toward Milwaukee or east toward Indiana and Michigan can be booked as a single transfer or by the hour. Because these routes avoid train lines, a car is often the only door-to-door option, and the booker shows the fixed fare for your exact address before you pay.
McCormick Place, Rosemont and trade-show travel
Chicago is one of North America's major convention cities, and the large shows at McCormick Place, the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont and venues in the suburbs create peaks on the airport roads. Plan for it:
- Book early when your trip coincides with a major show, since demand rises for everyone.
- Use a larger vehicle for teams. An Executive Sprinter takes up to 12 passengers and 12 bags.
- Consider a coach for larger delegations: mini-coaches and coaches of 20 to 56 seats on request.
- Check the event's cancellation terms. Event bookings can carry their own deadline, always printed on the confirmation.

Vehicles
- Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar): up to 3 passengers, 2 large and 2 cabin bags.
- First Class Sedan (S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar): up to 3 passengers.
- Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar): up to 6 passengers, 5–6 large bags.

The model is "or similar" and is confirmed at booking. The fleet page lists the classes, and the executive car service page covers daily corporate travel. Chauffeurs never photograph clients or post about trips, and will sign an NDA on request.
How booking works
- Enter the date, flight number and the Chicago address in the booker.
- Choose the vehicle class.
- See the fixed all-in fare for your exact trip before you pay.
- Receive one confirmation and one invoice; corporate accounts with monthly invoicing are available, and the desk is open around the clock.
More than 72 hours' notice cancels at no charge. At 72 hours or less 10% applies, at 48 hours or less 50%, and at 24 hours or less or a no-show 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a limousine from O'Hare to downtown Chicago?
It depends on the pickup, the vehicle class and the time. The booker shows a fixed all-in fare before you pay. For reference, the CTA's chart lists the Blue Line at $5 or less and a taxi at about $40, while the airport gives an average taxi fare of about $50, as of 2026.
How long does it take to get from O'Hare to the Loop?
The CTA Blue Line takes about 45 minutes. By road it is 25 to 90 minutes, depending on traffic and weather, with off-peak trips closer to 35–50 minutes. The distance is about 27 km (17 mi), so time depends almost entirely on the expressways.
Is the train a good way to get from O'Hare to downtown?
Yes, for a light traveller in daytime. The Blue Line runs 24 hours a day and goes straight through downtown. With heavy luggage, a group, children or a late arrival, a car is easier door to door.
What is the cheapest way from Midway to downtown Chicago?
The Orange Line, at $2.50 or less per the CTA, in about 25 minutes. It does not run overnight, when the N62 Archer bus fills in. Shared-ride cab fares from the airport to downtown are $18 per person at designated stands.
Do I need to book a limousine in Chicago in advance?
Yes. Under city rules, livery vehicles are prearranged, not street-hailed. Booking ahead is also how you get a driver tracking your flight, a set pickup time and a fixed fare.
Where do limousines pick up at O'Hare?
Pre-arranged pickups are in the lower-level center lane, lane 2, at each terminal. Livery parking is directly across from each terminal, about a 5 to 7 minute walk. Your confirmation states the exact meeting point.
Can I hire a Chicago limousine by the hour?
Yes. An hourly car stays with you through meetings, a dinner and a show, then takes you onward. Enter the date, start time and number of hours in the booker for the price of the vehicle you choose.
How much should I tip a limo driver in Chicago?
Tipping is customary in the United States and is separate from the fare unless your confirmation says otherwise. A common guide for a chauffeured ride is roughly 15 to 20 percent for good service.
