New York is the one American city where the question "do I even need a car?" has a serious answer. The subway is fast between stations, yellow taxis are everywhere, and traffic can make a short journey slower than the walk. Yet the city is also where a pre-booked limousine earns its place most often: at the airports, with luggage, on rainy evenings, during the United Nations General Assembly or the holiday weeks, and whenever a schedule leaves no room for a missed pickup. This page explains how limousine service in NYC works, what each airport asks of you, how the city regulates car services and how to book through Onroutz.ca.
Onroutz.ca is a Toronto-based booking desk. Rides in New York are delivered by vetted, licensed, commercially insured local partners and are booked, confirmed, supported and invoiced by our desk in Toronto. Partner vehicles are no more than four model years old, up to seven for Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach.
What does limousine service in NYC include?
Limousine service in NYC covers pre-booked chauffeured rides: airport transfers at JFK, LaGuardia, Newark and Teterboro, point-to-point trips across the five boroughs and New Jersey, hourly hire for evenings and business days, and event or group transport. Each is booked in advance, with a fixed fare shown before you pay.
The word "limousine" in New York covers more than a stretch car. It includes executive sedans, SUVs and vans driven by a professional chauffeur on a booking made ahead. That is the difference from a yellow cab, which you hail, and a ride app, where prices move with demand.
New York's airports and the car that serves them
Four airfields matter to a visitor, and each has its own character.
| Airport | Distance to Midtown | Rail link | Typical road time | Car notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JFK (Queens) | about 26 km (16 mi) | AirTrain to Jamaica or Howard Beach, then LIRR or subway | 45–75 min | Terminals are being rebuilt; confirm yours |
| LaGuardia (Queens) | about 13 km (8 mi) | Free Q70 bus to subway or LIRR | 25–50 min | Terminals B and C are separate buildings |
| Newark Liberty (New Jersey) | about 26 km (16 mi) | AirTrain Newark to rail into Penn Station | 40–75 min | Crosses the Hudson; tolls and tunnel queues |
| Teterboro (New Jersey) | about 19 km (12 mi) | None practical | 25–45 min | Business aviation; car meets you at the FBO |
For detailed comparisons, see JFK to Manhattan, LaGuardia to Manhattan, Newark to Manhattan and Teterboro car service. The pattern across all four is the same: public transit is the lowest-priced choice for a light traveller in daylight, and a pre-booked car is the sensible one with children, heavy bags, a group or a schedule.
How long do the airport runs take?
Think in bands, not minutes.
- Late night to early morning: JFK and Newark in 35–45 minutes, LaGuardia in 20–30.
- Mid-day: 45–60 minutes to JFK, 30–45 to LaGuardia, 45–60 to Newark.
- Weekday rush (roughly 7 am to 10 am and 4 pm to 8 pm): 60–90 minutes to JFK or Newark, 45–60 to LaGuardia.
- Rain, snow, holidays and the weeks around the UN General Assembly: add an hour as a precaution.
A driver who works the same routes daily is choosing between the Queens-Midtown Tunnel, the Lincoln Tunnel, the Holland Tunnel, the George Washington Bridge and the Triborough, and that choice is worth more than any nominal speed advantage.
Car service from NYC: heading to the airport
Going out is where the cost of delay is highest. A short checklist:
- Set the pickup from your flight, not the clock. Work back from the airline's recommended arrival time, add the road time for that hour and add a margin.
- Confirm the terminal the day before. JFK and LaGuardia are both rebuilding, and airlines have moved.
- Tell the desk about bags. A family with four suitcases needs a Luxury SUV, not a sedan.
- Book early on Fridays and Sundays, and in the weeks around Thanksgiving, when everyone leaves together.
Hourly hire in New York
An hourly car stays with you: the driver waits while you attend a meeting, dine or see a show, then takes you on. It suits a roadshow across Midtown, Wall Street and Brooklyn, a night with a Broadway curtain and a late dinner, a day of apartment viewings or a wedding weekend. Because you are not hailing a car in the street at the moment 20,000 other people are, the stop-start friction disappears.
- Business days: several meetings across Manhattan and Brooklyn with a base car.
- Evenings: theatre, dining and a late return to the hotel.
- Weddings and events: guest shuttles and the couple's car; see our events hub.
- Sightseeing: a driver who knows which avenues to avoid and where to stop.
Pricing is shown in the booker for your date, time and vehicle. We do not publish rate cards because a Friday in December is not a Tuesday in February.

How limousine service in NYC is regulated
In New York City, taxis and for-hire vehicles are licensed by the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC), which publishes taxi fare rules and a portal for checking license status. For a visitor, three practical rules follow:
- Book ahead for a limousine or car service. Chauffeured rides are prearranged, not hailed.
- Never accept a ride from someone who approaches you at the airport. JFK's own transportation page warns against unsolicited drivers.
- Know which fares are regulated. Yellow taxis from JFK to Manhattan have a $70 flat fare as of 2026, plus surcharges, tolls and tip. LaGuardia taxis are metered, with a $5 LaGuardia surcharge and a $2 airport access fee. Taxis to Newark add a $20 surcharge plus tolls, per the TLC.
Our New York partners are licensed for the work they do, and the Toronto desk is the single point of contact for anything that needs fixing.
The congestion relief zone
Manhattan streets at or below 60th Street are inside the MTA's congestion relief zone, which charges vehicles by type, time of day and payment method. Yellow and green taxis pay $0.75 per trip under the TLC rate card. A booked car's fixed fare from Onroutz.ca is all-in, so you see no separate line for the zone or for tolls.
Cruise ships, charters and corporate days
New York has cruise terminals on Manhattan's West Side and in Brooklyn's Red Hook, with another major cruise port across the Hudson in New Jersey. Terminal assignments are on your cruise documents; tell the desk the ship name and sailing date, and the pickup is timed to the ship's boarding window. For jet arrivals, see Teterboro and the private aviation ground transportation page.
Corporate accounts with monthly invoicing suit firms that book several trips a week for staff, clients and executives, and multi-leg itineraries can sit on one booking. Discretion is standard: no photos of clients, no posts about journeys, NDAs on request. Onroutz.ca is a transport service and not a security company: there are no armed drivers or bodyguards, and we work alongside a client's own security team.
The calendar that moves New York traffic
Certain weeks need earlier pickups and larger buffers: the United Nations General Assembly, usually in late September; the US Open, held around the end of August and early September; Fashion Week, held twice a year; the New York City Marathon, usually in early November; Thanksgiving week; the holiday season around Rockefeller Center; and New Year's Eve in Midtown, when road closures begin early. Big events may carry a different cancellation deadline, printed on your confirmation.
Coming from Toronto
Many Onroutz.ca customers start in Toronto. Flights from Toronto Pearson and Billy Bishop clear US customs in Canada under CBP preclearance, so you land at LaGuardia, JFK or Newark as a domestic passenger. If you prefer to travel overland, our Toronto to New York City route page covers the cross-border drive from Toronto. The full set of American cities is on the USA hub, and the wider limousine hub lists other cities.
How booking works
- Enter the date, pickup and drop-off, and the flight number for airport rides.
- Choose the vehicle class.
- See the fixed all-in fare for your exact trip before you pay.
- Receive one confirmation and one invoice; the desk is open around the clock.
Flight tracking is standard on every airport pickup. Waiting is free for 60 minutes after an international landing, 30 after a domestic one and 15 on other pickups. Child, toddler and booster seats can be added at booking, and a name-board meet and greet inside arrivals is available on request.
More than 72 hours' notice cancels at no charge. At 72 hours or less 10% applies, at 48 hours or less 50%, and at 24 hours or less or a no-show 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a limousine in NYC?
It depends on the route or the hours, the vehicle class and the date. Instead of a rate card, the booker shows a fixed all-in fare for your exact trip before you pay, with tolls included. Hourly hire is quoted by the hour for your date and vehicle.
How much is a car service from NYC to JFK?
The fare depends on your pickup address, the time and the vehicle. The booker shows a fixed all-in fare, including tolls, before you pay. For reference, yellow taxis charge a regulated $70 flat fare between JFK and Manhattan as of 2026, plus surcharges, tolls and tip.
What is the difference between a car service, a limousine and a yellow cab?
A yellow cab is hailed or taken at a stand and runs on a meter or regulated flat fare. A car service or limousine is booked in advance with a professional chauffeur, usually at a fare agreed beforehand. Ride apps sit in between, with prices that move with demand.
Do I need to book a limousine in advance?
Yes. Chauffeured vehicles are prearranged, and advance booking is what gives you a driver tracking your flight, a set pickup time and a fixed fare. During event weeks and holiday periods, book as soon as your plans are firm.
Can I hire a limousine by the hour in New York?
Yes. An hourly car stays with you through meetings, dinners or a theatre night and takes you onward. Enter the date, start time and number of hours in the booker, and you see the price for that vehicle before you pay.
Is gratuity included?
Tipping is customary in the United States and is separate from the fare unless your confirmation says otherwise. A common guide for a chauffeured ride is roughly 15 to 20 percent for good service.
How early should I leave for the airport from Manhattan?
Work back from your airline's recommended arrival time, then add the road time for the hour and a margin. For JFK from Midtown, 45–75 minutes is typical and 90 minutes is possible at weekday rush; LaGuardia takes 25–50 minutes.
Are the drivers licensed and insured?
Yes. Rides are delivered by vetted, licensed and commercially insured local partners, and the Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto books, confirms, supports and invoices every trip as one point of contact.
