Morzine sits in a green valley on the Swiss border, with the high resort of Avoriaz above it and Les Gets on the next ridge. Together they form the French heart of the Portes du Soleil, an area that crosses into Switzerland. The reason this valley is so popular for short breaks is the airport: Geneva is the nearest international gateway, and the resort's own tourism site puts the distance at about 75 km, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes. That makes the Geneva to Morzine transfer among the shortest of the big ski runs. Onroutz.ca books it as a private transfer with a driver waiting at arrivals.
What is the best way to get from Geneva Airport to Morzine?
A pre-booked private transfer: about 75 km and 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 45 minutes to Morzine, a little more to Avoriaz, with a driver waiting at arrivals and a drop at your chalet or hotel. Winter coaches and the train via Cluses or Thonon are cheaper but add waits and a second leg.
The key variable is the day. Saturdays are the changeover day for many chalets and hotels, so roads fill, and a quiet Tuesday and a snowy Saturday can differ by an hour. Book a flight that lands before the afternoon rush if you can.
How far is each village from Geneva Airport?
| Destination | Distance (about) | Drive time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Les Gets | 70 km / 43 mi | 1 h 10 – 1 h 40 | First village on the ridge; sources quote around 70 km |
| Morzine | 75 km / 47 mi | 1 h 15 – 1 h 45 | The resort's own site quotes about 75 km and 1 h 15 |
| Avoriaz | 85 km / 53 mi | 1 h 25 – 1 h 55 | Car-free; the resort's site quotes about 1 h 25 |
| Samoëns, Flaine and the Grand Massif | Ask for a quote | Varies by village | Reached by mountain road from Cluses |
Published distances vary by a few kilometres depending on where they start and end; the Avoriaz access page itself gives 85 km in one place and 94 km in another. The figures above are planning numbers, and the booker shows the exact time for your address.
The road to Morzine
The route leaves Geneva Airport on the Swiss side, crosses the border to France and joins the A40 motorway toward Bonneville and Cluses. From Cluses, the resort's official pages describe two approaches to the Morzine valley: the D907 and D902 roads through Taninges and Les Gets, or via Thonon-les-Bains and the D902 up the Vallée d'Aulps. Both finish with mountain roads that are narrow in places, with hairpins, and are ploughed but can have snow on the surface at any time in winter.
The motorway section is fast. The final 20 to 30 minutes are the slow part and the part that varies with snow and traffic. In summer, the same road carries cyclists, so the driver expects them on the climbs.

Morzine's tourism office says regular bus transfers from Geneva airport run only in the winter season, and a coach company offers a Geneva-to-Morzine service whose details sit on its own booking page. There is no railway station in Morzine itself; the nearest stations are at Cluses and Thonon-les-Bains. Check the Morzine-Avoriaz site for current options.
When the coach or train is the better choice
On a quiet week in the winter season, a seat on a scheduled coach from the airport is a reasonable solo option. It fits when you have one bag, you are happy to follow the timetable, and your chalet is on a bus route.
The train via Cluses or Thonon suits travellers who enjoy rail and have little luggage. The stations are around 30 km from Morzine, so a second leg is always needed, and with skis or a large suitcase that leg gets awkward.
For everything else, the car's value is simple: one booking, no change, a drive straight to the door.
When a private car wins
- Families. Child, toddler and booster seats can be added on request at booking.
- Groups. An Executive Sprinter takes up to 12 passengers with 12 bags, and mini-coaches and coaches from 20 to 56 seats are available on request. See Sprinter van with driver.
- Ski and snowboard bags. A Luxury SUV carries up to six passengers with five or six large bags.
- Late flights. Flight tracking means the driver is waiting even if your plane lands late. Free waiting is 60 minutes after an international landing.
- Chalet pickups. The car goes to the chalet door, not the bus stop in the village.
- Short stays. On a weekend break, saving an hour each way is the difference between two ski days and one.
Arriving in Avoriaz: a car-free resort
Avoriaz is built for pedestrians. The resort's official access page describes it as a car-free resort at 1,800 m, reached by road via Cluses (D907 and D902) or Thonon-les-Bains (D902), with free shuttle lines serving the village and Morzine. Transfers stop at the edge of the resort rather than your door.
What that means in practice:
- The vehicle stops at the resort's reception area at 1,800 m, or at the foot of the Prodains Express cable car, depending on where your accommodation is.
- From there you walk, take a resort shuttle, or use any luggage service your property offers.
- If your apartment is far from the entry point, ask the property manager which approach is easiest and tell us at booking.
The resort says the TGV Lyria from Paris to Geneva takes about 3 hours 11, which is useful if you are combining a rail leg; see Paris Gare de Lyon for the Paris end. The Avoriaz page lists Geneva at about 1 hour 25 by car.
Details of the Avoriaz arrival, and shuttle lines in Morzine, are on the Avoriaz access page.
Les Gets, Morzine town and the villages
Les Gets
Les Gets is first on the climb, about 70 km from Geneva, with a compact village centre where parking is tight. The car drops at the nearest legal point near your hotel. Give the full address.
Morzine
Morzine is the larger village, and its chalets are spread across the hillsides above the centre. Many have steep driveways, and in snow the driver may stop at the road and ask you to walk the last stretch.
Samoëns, Flaine and the Grand Massif
If you are heading to a neighbouring valley, tell the booker the village and hotel. The trip leaves the A40 at Cluses and climbs by a different mountain road. Flaine is a purpose-built high-altitude resort and has its own access arrangement.
Winter equipment and driving rules
From 1 November to 31 March, cars in designated French mountain communes must carry chains or have four winter tyres marked 3PMSF. The departmental prefect lists which municipalities are covered, and Haute-Savoie's list is published locally; check it if you are driving yourself. Transfer vehicles are operated by local partners who handle this as part of working in the valley. On snow days the final stretch above Cluses is slower and conditions can change in an hour.
The Swiss side of Geneva Airport
Geneva Airport has a Swiss sector and a French sector. If you arrive on an international flight, you clear Swiss customs and come out into the Swiss arrivals hall, where your driver meets you with a name board, or an alias if you prefer privacy. You cannot go straight from an international arrival into France without passing through Switzerland, according to the explanation at gva.ch. The drive then crosses the border by road, so everyone in the car, children included, should carry a passport.
How Onroutz.ca delivers a Morzine transfer
Onroutz.ca is a transfer desk based in Toronto. In France the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner, and Onroutz.ca books, confirms, supports and invoices it from Toronto: one booking, one confirmation, one invoice, one 24/7 contact. Partner vehicles are no more than four model years old, and the vehicle class is confirmed at booking as "or similar". Our fleet page lists the classes.

How long is the transfer from Geneva to Morzine?

Is there a train to Morzine?
No, Morzine has no railway station. The nearest stations are Cluses and Thonon-les-Bains, and a bus or taxi completes the journey. A private car avoids the change.
Can the car take me to my apartment in Avoriaz?
Avoriaz is car-free, so the vehicle stops at the resort reception or near the Prodains Express cable car, and you continue on foot or by a resort service. Tell us your building when you book so we can advise on the best stopping point.
Do I need snow chains or winter tyres?
Between 1 November and 31 March, designated mountain communes require chains or four 3PMSF winter tyres. Check the Haute-Savoie list if you drive yourself. With a transfer, the partner handles equipment.
Is the coach from Geneva to Morzine available all year?
The tourism office says regular bus transfers from Geneva airport run only in winter. Outside the season, a private car or the train plus a second leg are the usual options.
Can I book a transfer for a group or a ski school?
Yes. An Executive Sprinter seats up to 12 with 12 bags, and mini-coaches and coaches of 20 to 56 seats are available on request. Tell us the group size and equipment at booking.
Will the driver wait if my flight is delayed?
Yes. Your flight is tracked and the pickup follows the actual landing time. You have 60 minutes of included waiting after an international flight lands, 30 after a domestic flight.
What is your cancellation policy?
More than 72 hours' notice: no charge. 72 hours or less: 10%. 48 hours or less: 50%. 24 hours or less, or a no-show: 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup. Event bookings can carry their own deadline, always printed on the confirmation.
