How do you get from Changi Airport to your Singapore hotel?
Changi Airport to most central Singapore hotels is about 20 km (12 mi) and takes 20 to 30 minutes by road. Taxis and app cars wait at all four terminals, the MRT serves Terminals 2 and 3, and a pre-booked private transfer meets you at arrivals and drops you at the hotel entrance.
A quick clarification, because search engines blur the term: this page is about the ground transfer from the airport to your hotel, not a flight connection between terminals. If you are connecting between flights, the airport's own transit information is what you need. If you are leaving the airport for a hotel, you are in the right place.
Singapore is the easiest big city in Asia to reach from its airport. The distances are short, the roads are well managed, public transport is cheap and clear, and metered taxis are everywhere. That makes the honest question not "how do I get there" but "which option suits my situation": your bags, your party, the hour you land and the district of your hotel.
Distances and drive times to common hotel areas
Changi sits at the eastern end of the island and the hotel districts are west and south-west of it. The airport's guidance for taxis is that rides to the city generally take about 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic and destination, and a separate Changi page puts the taxi ride to the city at about 30 minutes. Here is how that looks by district:
| Hotel area | Road distance | Typical drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Marina Bay, Raffles Place, the Central Business District | About 20 km (12 mi) | 20-30 min |
| Orchard Road | About 22 km (14 mi) | 25-35 min |
| Sentosa and the HarbourFront area | About 30 km (19 mi) | 30-45 min |
| East Coast, Katong, Marine Parade | About 12 km (7 mi) | 15-25 min |
| Jurong and the western business parks | About 35 km (22 mi) | 35-50 min |
Those distances are estimates, labelled "about" because they depend on your pickup terminal and your hotel's entrance. Weekday mornings and evenings, and wet-weather peaks, are the slower end of each range. Late at night the expressways clear and the drive can take 15 to 20 minutes.
The mode comparison
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MRT from Changi Airport station (Terminals 2 and 3) | 40-60 min with a change, plus the walk to the hotel | Low public fare, tap a bank card or card | Cabin bag; stairs at interchanges | One traveller, central hotel, light bag |
| Public bus from the terminal basements | 50-90 min | Low public fare, exact cash if you pay in cash | Limited | Local knowledge, patient travellers |
| Metered taxi | 20-35 min | Metered plus airport and time-of-day surcharges | 2-3 large bags | 1-3 travellers, any hour |
| App-booked private hire car | 20-35 min | Dynamic pricing | 2-3 large bags | Individuals comfortable with an app |
| Changi's ground transport concierge | 20-35 min | Fixed fares published by the airport (S$70 for 4-seater, S$75 for 6-seater, as of 2026) | 4 or 6 seater | Walk-up bookings at the counter |
| Pre-booked private transfer | 20-35 min, meet-and-greet at arrivals | Fixed fare via booker, quoted before you pay | 2 to 12 bags by vehicle | Families, groups, business travellers, late arrivals |
The facts above come from Changi Airport's own transport page. It lists taxis at the arrival areas of Terminals 1 to 4 around the clock, and private hire pickup points at all four terminals for Grab, Gojek, Zig, Tada Mobility, Ryde and Geolah. It also gives the airport's concierge fares as of 2026. We quote them because they are published by the airport, not because they are our fares. Changi's guide to choosing a transfer also notes that shared hotel shuttles generally depart every 15 to 30 minutes and need an advance reservation, which is worth knowing if you are weighing a shared ride against a private one.
What a metered taxi costs in practice
Changi lists a metered fare to the city of about S$25 to S$45, with no flat rate, and extra charges that depend on when you ride. All trips starting at the airport carry an airport surcharge of S$8 between 5 pm and 11.59 pm and S$6 at other times. A 25% peak-hour surcharge applies on weekday mornings from 6 to 9.29 am, on weekends and public holidays from 10 am to 1.59 pm, and every day from 5 pm to 11.59 pm. A 50% midnight surcharge applies from midnight to 5.59 am.
Those numbers give you a sense of how fares move through the day. A taxi on a weekday afternoon is an honest, moderate-cost option. A taxi at 6 pm, when the airport surcharge, the peak surcharge and the evening roads stack up, costs more, and an app car at the same hour may be surge-priced. Our own transfers are quoted as a fixed fare before you pay, which makes the arrival cost known before you fly.
The MRT: when it is the right call
The MRT is excellent for a light-bag traveller. Changi Airport station (CG2) serves Terminals 2 and 3. To reach the city you change at Tanah Merah (EW4) onto the East West Line, or at Expo (CG1/DT35) onto the Downtown Line. The first train from Changi Airport to Tanah Merah leaves at 5.31 am Monday to Saturday and 5.59 am on Sundays and public holidays, and the last trains are at 11.18 pm to connect for Tuas Link and 12.06 am for Pasir Ris.
Terminal 1 has no direct MRT link, according to Changi's guidance, and Terminal 4 has its own bus stops. If you land at either, factor in a walk or a shuttle before you reach the train. Late arrivals, a heavy bag, two children or a hotel far from an MRT station tip the decision toward a car.
Terminals and where the driver meets you
Changi has four passenger terminals, Terminal 1 through Terminal 4. For a private transfer, give us your airline and flight number. The desk confirms your terminal and the driver tracks the landing.
A name-board meet and greet inside arrivals is available on request, with an alias on the board for privacy. Otherwise the driver waits at the arrivals level and messages you with the exact vehicle position. The standard waiting time is 60 minutes free after an international landing, 30 after a domestic one and 15 on other pickups, so a slow immigration queue or a late bag does not cost you the car.
For a second look at the airport, read our Changi Airport guide, which covers terminals, flight arrival patterns and the surrounding services.
Hotel by hotel: how the last 200 metres work
Most Singapore hotels have a driveway or a covered drop-off. Some of the busiest, around Marina Bay and Orchard Road, have restricted approaches at peak times. The private transfer driver knows where each approach starts, which side of the road is permitted and where to wait for departure.
Three practical tips:
- Give the exact hotel name and the entrance. Some properties sit in a complex with several towers, and the check-in tower may not be where cars stop.
- Check for events. Large events can change which roads are open near Marina Bay. During race week for Formula 1, for example, the district is closed to normal traffic and cars use designated points; see our Singapore Grand Prix guide.
- Tell us if you have more than two large cases or a pushchair. The desk will match the vehicle class; an Executive Sedan takes up to 3 passengers with 2 large and 2 cabin bags, a Luxury SUV takes up to 6 with 5 to 6 large bags.
Entry rules for visitors
Singapore asks nearly every arriving traveller to submit the SG Arrival Card online before landing. According to ICA, submission is free and must be done within three days before arrival, counting the arrival day, and the card is not a visa. Transit passengers who do not clear immigration are exempt. Complete it on the official government site; ICA does not endorse paid services that offer to file the card for you.
Submit the card before you leave for the airport so your arrival clears without a queue at the kiosks. Immigration processing is normally quick, and the card is one reason.
Late-night and early-morning arrivals
Changi never closes, and a significant number of flights land after the last MRT trains. After midnight the taxi midnight surcharge applies, and an app car can have long waits at busy times. A pre-booked transfer is the calm option at that hour: the driver is already at arrivals, the fare is fixed in advance, and the hotel is expecting your late check-in if you have told it.
Early departures work the same way in reverse. The driver collects you at the agreed time and takes the expressway to the right terminal door. For a pickup at 4 am, book the evening before and confirm the departure terminal on your e-ticket.
When the car wins, and when it doesn't
Be honest: for one traveller with a cabin bag and a hotel by an MRT line, the train is the best-value route and it works well. For a taxi, the queue is usually short and the fare moderate.
A private transfer earns its place when:
- You are three or more and one vehicle replaces several tickets or two taxis.
- You have large or heavy bags, golf clubs or children's equipment.
- You are travelling with children; Infant, toddler and booster seats are supplied when you ask for them at booking.
- You land late at night or leave very early.
- You have a business schedule, an onward meeting or a corporate account with monthly invoicing.
- You want privacy, with a name-board alias at arrivals.
How the service works in Singapore
Our Singapore transfers are driven by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local partner. The Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto books, confirms, supports and invoices the ride, so you deal with one desk around the clock. Every partner vehicle is four model years old or newer.
The fare you see in the booker is fixed and all-in for the exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle you choose, and it is shown before payment. You can add stops, link several legs on one booking and view the fleet. For other Asian cities see the Asia-Pacific guide, the airport transfers hub, the hotel transfers hub, the transfers list or meet and greet options, and for a stopover in Bangkok read Bangkok to Pattaya.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Changi Airport from the city centre?
Marina Bay and the Central Business District are about 20 km (12 mi) from Changi by road. Changi Airport states that rides to the city generally take about 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic and destination. Orchard Road is a little farther, and Sentosa farther again.
Can I use Grab from Singapore Airport?
Yes. Changi lists private hire pickup points at all four terminals for Grab, Gojek, Zig, Tada Mobility, Ryde and Geolah. Fares are dynamic. If you want the fare known before you fly, a pre-booked private transfer is quoted as a fixed fare through our booker.
How much is a taxi from Changi Airport to the city?
Changi lists a metered fare of about S$25 to S$45 to the city, with an airport surcharge of S$6 or S$8 depending on the time, plus peak-hour and midnight surcharges (as of 2026). There is no flat rate on the page. Our private transfers are quoted as a fixed fare through the booker.
Is there an MRT from Changi to the city?
Yes. Changi Airport station serves Terminals 2 and 3. You change at Tanah Merah or Expo for the city. The first train is at 5.31 am Monday to Saturday, and the last connections leave at 11.18 pm and 12.06 am. Terminal 1 has no direct MRT link.
Can I leave the airport during a transfer or layover?
That is a flight-connection question, not a hotel-transfer one. Rules depend on your ticket and nationality, and the airport and your airline publish them. If you are leaving the airport for a hotel, you clear immigration first, and our driver can meet you in arrivals afterward.
Do I need an arrival card for Singapore?
Most visitors must submit the SG Arrival Card online within three days before arrival, counting the arrival day. ICA says the card is free and is not a visa. Transit passengers who do not clear immigration are exempt. Always use the official government site.
Where do I meet the driver at Changi?
The driver tracks your flight and meets you in arrivals at your terminal. A name-board meet and greet inside the arrivals hall is available on request, with an alias for privacy. Waiting time is 60 minutes free after international landings and 30 after domestic.
What if immigration is slow and I am late meeting the driver?
The driver tracks your landing time and waits. Waiting is 60 minutes free after an international landing, 30 minutes after a domestic one and 15 on other pickups, so a long queue at the immigration hall or a late bag does not forfeit the car. Message the driver if you expect a longer delay.
