How far is Newark Airport to NYC?

Newark Airport to NYC is about 16 miles (26 km) from Newark Liberty International (EWR) to Midtown Manhattan. By road the trip usually takes 45 to 75 minutes, and longer when the Hudson tunnels back up. The NJ Transit train is the fastest public option, at about 30 minutes to Penn Station.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs the airport, has long described Newark as roughly 16 miles from Midtown. That is a straight-line style figure; the road route runs up the New Jersey Turnpike or Route 1/9, through a Hudson River crossing, and into Manhattan's grid. The river is the bottleneck. Two tunnels and a bridge take most of the traffic, and all of them funnel into streets that are already full of buses and delivery trucks.

Because the road time swings so widely, this page treats Newark Airport to NYC as a planning problem rather than a single number. Where you are going in Manhattan, what hour you land and how many people are travelling decide which option makes sense. The table below sets the main choices side by side.

When the train is the better choice

For a single traveller going to Midtown with one bag, the train is hard to beat. The Newark Airport Rail Station is reached by AirTrain Newark from each terminal, then NJ Transit trains on the Northeast Corridor or North Jersey Coast Line run to New York Penn Station at 31st Street and 8th Avenue. NJ Transit lists the journey as about 30 minutes and an adult ticket at $17.25, and that ticket covers the AirTrain fee. Tickets bought on the NJ Transit app avoid the on-board surcharge.

There are a few catches that the timetable does not show.

  • The AirTrain leg. AirTrain serves Terminals A, B and C. The Port Authority has announced weekday construction outages with shuttle buses replacing the link to the rail station between 5 a.m. and 3 p.m., adding up to about 15 minutes, with a pause for the holiday period from 30 October 2026 to 15 January 2027. Check the current notice on the day you fly, because the schedule moves.
  • The last mile. Penn Station is under Madison Square Garden. A hotel on the East Side or on the Upper West Side turns a 30-minute train into a transfer, a subway ride and a walk with luggage.
  • Stairs and platforms. Escalators and elevators exist, but a train with three large suitcases and a child is a trip you feel.

If you are travelling alone, travelling light and your hotel is within a short walk of Penn Station, take the train. We say so because it is true.

When the private car wins

Choose a private car from Newark when any of these points applies.

  1. Three or more travellers. Sedan, SUV or Sprinter, one vehicle and one set of luggage. Per-person ticketing on a train or bus adds up quickly for a group.
  2. Heavy bags. A Luxury SUV takes up to 6 passengers with 5–6 large bags. A group of 12 with 12 bags fits an Executive Sprinter.
  3. A hotel far from Penn Station. A chauffeur drops you at the hotel entrance, not at a station 20 blocks away.
  4. Late-night arrivals. After a delayed flight, the car is already waiting. Your driver tracks the flight and adjusts to the actual landing time.
  5. Children. Child seats come in infant, toddler and booster sizes and can be added to the booking.
  6. Business schedules. A fixed fare, an invoice for your expense report and a driver who waits for you. Corporate accounts with monthly invoicing are available.

Taxi from Newark Airport to NYC

Newark publishes a zone-based taxi fare to Manhattan, set by the airport. As of 2026, it lists these fares:

  • Zone 1, Battery to West 13th Street: $60
  • Zone 2, West 14th to West 50th Street: $65
  • Zone 3, West 51st to West 96th Street: $70
  • Zone 4, West 97th to West 185th Street: $75
  • Above West 185th Street: $80

Then the extras. A $2.00 airport access fee applies. A $10 rush-hour surcharge applies to trips into New York State on weekdays from 6 to 10 a.m. and from 3 to 8 p.m., and on weekends from 12 to 9 p.m. Eastern. An extra $5.00 applies to East Side destinations between Battery Park and 145th Street. Tolls and any MTA congestion pricing are not included in the fare.

So a trip to Midtown West in the middle of a weekday afternoon is a $65 fare plus the access fee, plus a $10 rush-hour charge, plus tolls, plus tip. The advantage of a taxi is that the fare is regulated; the disadvantage is that it has to be assembled from five line items. A dispatcher assigns the next available cab at each terminal, so you do not need to reserve, and the airport warns against anyone offering rides who is not at an official pickup area.

Tolls and congestion pricing on the way in

Two charges can apply to a car trip into Manhattan, and neither shows up in the airport's fare table.

Hudson River crossing toll. The Port Authority collects tolls entering New York at the Lincoln Tunnel, the Holland Tunnel and the George Washington Bridge. Crossings are cashless, so payment is by E-ZPass or Tolls by Mail. Rates depend on the time of day and the payment method, and the Port Authority publishes the current chart.

Manhattan congestion pricing. Since 2025, vehicles that enter Manhattan south of and including 60th Street pay a congestion relief zone toll. The MTA lists $9 for a passenger car with E-ZPass at peak times and $2.25 overnight. Peak hours are 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends. Taxis pass on a charge of $0.75 per trip, and high-volume for-hire vehicles $1.50. The FDR Drive and the West Side Highway are outside the zone as long as you do not exit into the zone.

When you book with us, the booker shows an all-in fare for your trip, so you do not collect tolls on a separate bill.

Newark Airport to Manhattan by terminal

The three terminals share one road system, but the walking is not equal.

  • Terminal A is the newer building, and NJ Transit notes that its AirTrain stop is a short walk away.
  • Terminal B and Terminal C are served by the same AirTrain loop. Airport guides describe Terminal C as the United Airlines terminal and the largest of the three.

Your airline and your boarding documents tell you which terminal you land at, and the booker asks for the terminal or flight number so your chauffeur knows where to be.

Taxis are available outside each terminal. For a private car, your chauffeur's details and the pickup instructions arrive with your confirmation. If you want a name board inside arrivals, request a meet and greet when you book; an alias name on the board for privacy is available. See airport meet and greet for how it works.

What flight tracking changes

On every airport pickup, we track your flight. If the plane lands 50 minutes late, the car is still there. If it lands early, the chauffeur adjusts. After an international landing, you have 60 minutes of free waiting from the actual landing time, and 30 minutes after a domestic landing. That waiting time covers immigration and customs, which can vary widely with the hour and the number of large international arrivals.

For comparison, a taxi simply waits in line, and a ride-hail driver cancels if you take too long. Neither is wrong; they are built for a different kind of trip.

Manhattan back to Newark Airport

The reverse trip, from a Manhattan hotel to EWR, is also a common search ("car service from NYC to Newark airport"). The same variables apply, with one extra: you are in charge of the time you leave. Plan the car for 3 hours before an international departure and 2 hours before a domestic one, and add 30 minutes if you are leaving at a weekday rush hour. The road back out of Manhattan toward the Holland Tunnel and Lincoln Tunnel can run slow in the afternoon, and a scheduled car with a fixed pickup time is the way to avoid guessing.

If you are in New Jersey instead, say Jersey City, Hoboken or Short Hills, the distance to EWR is shorter, there is no Hudson crossing, and the choice between train and car depends on where you live. Ask for your exact address in the booker.

The other New York airports

New York has three major commercial airports and one business-aviation airport close to Manhattan. If your trip also touches JFK, read JFK to Manhattan and LaGuardia to Manhattan. Private flights use Teterboro, in New Jersey, and our Teterboro page covers that route.

For the city itself, the New York City limousine page explains hourly bookings, events and multi-stop days. The transfers hub lists every route we cover, and the USA hub shows the full set of American airports, ports and hotels.

How booking and service work

A trip like this is booked, confirmed, supported and invoiced by the Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto. In the United States, rides are delivered by vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partners, driven by US-licensed chauffeurs, in vehicles no more than four model years old. You get one booking, one confirmation, one invoice and one 24/7 contact, whichever airport you use.

Vehicle classes are shown as "or similar", with the model confirmed at booking: Executive Sedan (up to 3 passengers), First Class Sedan (up to 3), Luxury SUV (up to 6) and Executive Sprinter (up to 12). Browse the fleet to match the class to your party, and the airport transfers hub for other airports.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Newark Airport to Manhattan?

Take the AirTrain to the Newark Airport Rail Station and then NJ Transit to Penn Station (about 30 minutes), ride the Newark Airport Express bus (about 50 minutes), take an airport taxi (zone fares) or book a private car. The right choice depends on luggage, party size and your hotel.

How much is the train from Newark Airport to Manhattan?

NJ Transit lists an adult ticket to Midtown Manhattan at $17.25 as of 2026, and the ticket includes the AirTrain fee. A combined NJ Transit and PATH trip to 33rd Street is listed at $11.75. Buying on the NJ Transit app avoids a surcharge for buying on board.

How much is a taxi from Newark Airport to NYC?

The airport lists zone fares of $60 to $80 for Manhattan as of 2026, plus a $2.00 airport access fee, a $10 rush-hour surcharge on peak trips, a $5.00 East Side charge and tolls. For a fixed all-in fare instead, use the booker.

How much is Uber from Newark Airport to Manhattan?

Ride-hail prices change with demand, so a fixed figure would mislead you. Expect surge pricing at peak hours and on holidays, plus the same tolls and congestion charges. The booker gives a fixed all-in fare for a private car before you pay, so you can compare.

Is there a subway from Newark Airport to Manhattan?

No. The rail link is NJ Transit, reached by AirTrain Newark from the terminals. From Penn Station you can change to the subway, and a PATH route to 33rd Street and the World Trade Center is also listed on the airport's transportation page.

How long does it take to get from Newark Airport to Midtown?

About 30 minutes on the NJ Transit train, about 50 minutes on the express bus, and 45 to 75 minutes by car. A weekday rush hour, a tunnel closure or an accident can double the road time, so leave margin on departure days.

Is Newark closer to Manhattan than JFK?

Newark is about 16 miles from Midtown, and JFK is a similar distance. Neither is reliably faster, because both depend on the same rush-hour crossings and bridges. Pick the airport by your flight and your hotel's side of the river.

Can I book a car for a group?

Yes. A Luxury SUV seats up to 6 with 5–6 large bags, and an Executive Sprinter seats up to 12 with 12 bags. For larger parties, ask about a mini-coach or coach. Availability is confirmed at booking.

What is the cancellation policy?

More than 72 hours' notice has no charge. At 72 hours or less the charge is 10 percent, at 48 hours or less it is 50 percent, and at 24 hours or less or on a no-show it is 100 percent, counted from the scheduled pickup. A convention or big event may come with a different cancellation window, shown on your confirmation.
