How do you get from Bangkok to Pattaya?

Bangkok to Pattaya is about 147 km (91 mi) from the city and about 120 km (75 mi) from Suvarnabhumi Airport, mostly on Motorway 7. The drive takes roughly 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on the hour. Airport coach, taxi and private transfer all work; a private car runs door to door.

Pattaya sits on the Gulf of Thailand south-east of Bangkok, in Chonburi province. It is a seaside resort city with long beaches, high-rise hotels, a busy nightlife district, family attractions and boat connections to nearby islands. Visitors often combine it with a few days in Bangkok, or fly into Suvarnabhumi and go straight to the coast.

The route is simple, and the decisions are small ones that add up: which airport or Bangkok address you start from, which part of Pattaya you stay in, and what hour you travel. This page covers all three, compares the real options and shows when a private car beats the coach.

The distance, in the three versions you will meet

The numbers you see online vary because they start from different places:

  • From central Bangkok: about 147 km (91 mi) by road.
  • From Suvarnabhumi Airport: about 120 km (75 mi). The airport lies east of the city and is on the Pattaya side of Bangkok, which is why it is the shorter run.
  • From U-Tapao Airport (UTP): U-Tapao Airport's own site lists 39.1 km to Pattaya city. It is a small regional airport closer to Pattaya than either Bangkok airport.

For Don Mueang Airport, on the north side of Bangkok, the road distance is longer than from Suvarnabhumi because the trip crosses the city first. Tell the booker which airport you use; the airline's code (BKK, DMK, UTP) is enough.

Drive time by hour of day

The drive is mostly on Motorway 7, a toll motorway, so the problem is not the motorway but the approaches to and from it.

  • Mid-morning to mid-afternoon on weekdays: the fastest windows. From Suvarnabhumi, about 1.5 hours is typical.
  • Friday evening, Sunday evening and holiday weekends: Bangkok residents travel to and from Pattaya, and the motorway slows. Allow 2.5 hours or more.
  • Leaving central Bangkok in the morning peak: the first hour can be spent in city streets before you reach the motorway.
  • Late night: the road is clear and the trip from the airport is often under 1.5 hours.

Songkran, New Year and long public-holiday weekends are the heaviest periods. If your trip falls on one, travel early in the day or the day before.

The coach fare in the table comes from Suvarnabhumi Airport's ground transport page, which lists a Roong Reuang Coach service (bus 389) to Pattaya from the Passenger Terminal, first floor, Exit 8, running between 10:00 and 18:00. That means it does not help a flight that lands in the evening or a very early arrival.

What the airport's public taxi system does

Suvarnabhumi has a public taxi service on Floor 1 of the Passenger Terminal, between Gates 4 and 7, open around the clock. The airport operator's taxi page says drivers receive an extra 50 baht under a Ministry of Transport announcement, passengers pay tolls themselves and a traffic-jam rate applies when the taxi moves slower than 6 km/h. For longer trips, the fare can be agreed between the passenger and the driver, as the Department of Land Transport allows.

That agreed-fare provision is why the price of a taxi to Pattaya varies. A driver may quote a flat fare for the trip, or may use the meter. If you take a taxi, ask what the quote includes, and agree it before you set off. A pre-booked transfer removes the negotiation: the fare is shown in the booker before you pay, and the driver is waiting at arrivals.

Why people book a private transfer for this route

Pattaya is far enough that a poor choice costs you a couple of hours. Four situations make the pre-booked car attractive:

  1. Late arrivals. The airport coach stops in the early evening. A midnight landing needs a taxi or a booked car.
  2. Families. A two-hour ride with children is easier in your own car, with a child, toddler or booster seat on request at booking.
  3. Three or more people. One vehicle to the hotel door replaces three coach tickets and a taxi at the other end.
  4. A first visit. A driver who has the hotel's exact entrance saves time in a city where several hotels share a service road.

A name-board meet and greet at arrivals is available on request, with an alias for privacy. Waiting time is 60 minutes free after an international landing, 30 after a domestic one and 15 on other pickups.

Reserve your car

Where in Pattaya is your hotel?

Pattaya's districts matter for the last stretch. The beachfront in Central Pattaya runs along a one-way road with heavy foot traffic in the evening. Jomtien, to the south, is quieter and longer. Naklua and Wong Amat, to the north, have more resort-style hotels. Pratumnak, on the hill between Central Pattaya and Jomtien, is residential.

Give the driver the hotel's name and a map pin. If the hotel entrance is on a pedestrian-heavy road at night, the driver may stop at the nearest permitted point and a short walk follows. The desk records any preference, such as a quiet-side drop-off, with the booking.

Choosing the vehicle for the run

The two-hour run is where vehicle size matters. An Executive Sedan seats up to 3 passengers with 2 large and 2 cabin bags. A Luxury SUV seats up to 6 with 5 to 6 large bags, which suits a family with a stroller. An Executive Sprinter seats up to 12 passengers with 12 bags, and is the usual choice for wedding parties, sports teams and corporate groups heading to the coast for a weekend. Most vehicles have water on board and phone charging.

If your plan includes several hotels or a mix of arrival times, the desk can put several legs on one booking. Browse stays by area on the hotel transfers hub and ask about a combined itinerary if you will move between Bangkok, Pattaya and the airport more than once.

Return trips and onward connections

If you head back to Bangkok for a flight, leave Pattaya early. The risk is not the motorway but the final approach to the airport, which backs up at busy times. For an international departure, check your airline's advice on check-in time and add the long end of the drive.

Onward from Pattaya, many travellers continue to other parts of Thailand or the region. For Phuket and the south, see the airport transfers hub and the Bangkok Suvarnabhumi airport guide. If you are planning a longer Asian circuit, the Asia-Pacific guide links other routes, such as Bali airport to Seminyak and Changi to Singapore hotels.

Entry rules

Thailand asks foreign visitors to complete a Digital Arrival Card online before they arrive. Use the official Thai immigration website (tdac.immigration.go.th) and avoid paid third-party sites. Visa-exemption periods and requirements have been changing, so check the rules for your own passport with the Thai embassy or consulate before you book flights; do not rely on an old article.

Traffic in Thailand drives on the left. Your driver manages the road, and you manage the paperwork.

When the coach, taxi or car wins

Be fair about the options. The airport coach is the lowest-fare choice if your flight lands within its operating hours and your luggage is modest. A taxi works for one or two travellers who want to leave right away and are happy to agree a fare. A ride-hailing app can be the best choice for a trip within Bangkok.

The private transfer wins on privacy, comfort, late arrivals, group size and certainty. It also simplifies a trip with children, heavy cases or a tight schedule, such as a conference on arrival.

How the service works in Thailand

In Thailand, the vehicle and chauffeur come from a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local partner. The Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto does the booking, the confirmation, the 24/7 support and the invoice, so there is one contact if your plans change. Partner cars are never older than four model years.

Executive Sedan, First Class Sedan, Luxury SUV and Executive Sprinter, or similar, are available; see the fleet page. The booker quotes a fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle, and shows it before you pay. The transfers hub lists the other routes in the region.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Pattaya from Bangkok?

About 147 km (91 mi) by road from central Bangkok, and about 120 km (75 mi) from Suvarnabhumi Airport. The drive takes around 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on traffic. Friday evenings and Sundays are the slowest.

How much is a taxi from Bangkok airport to Pattaya?

At Suvarnabhumi, public taxis use the meter or an agreed fare for longer trips, with an extra 50 baht for the driver and tolls paid by the passenger, according to the airport operator. There is no single published price. A pre-booked transfer shows the fixed fare in the booker before you pay.

Is there a bus from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Pattaya?

Yes. The airport lists a Roong Reuang Coach service (bus 389) from the Passenger Terminal, first floor, Exit 8, between 10:00 and 18:00 for 130 baht (as of 2026). It does not run outside those hours, so late arrivals need a taxi or a booked car.

How long does it take to drive from Bangkok to Pattaya?

Typically 1.5 to 2.5 hours. A mid-morning weekday run from Suvarnabhumi is about 1.5 hours, while Friday evenings, Sunday evenings and public holidays can take 2.5 hours or more. Late at night the road is clear.

Is U-Tapao Airport closer to Pattaya?

Yes. The airport's own site lists 39.1 km to Pattaya city, well under the distance from Bangkok. U-Tapao handles a smaller range of flights, so check your airline. We can meet flights there as well as at Suvarnabhumi.

Do you meet flights at Suvarnabhumi?

Yes. The driver tracks your flight and meets you at arrivals. A name-board meet and greet is available on request, with an alias on the board for privacy. Waiting is 60 minutes free after an international landing.

Can I stop on the way?

Yes. Ask the desk to add a stop for food, a shop or an attraction when you book. A short stop is easy; a long stop changes the schedule, and we confirm the plan with you before the trip.

Can you collect me from a Bangkok hotel or from Don Mueang?

Yes. Pickups can start at a Bangkok hotel, at Suvarnabhumi, at Don Mueang or at U-Tapao, and the drop-off can be any Pattaya hotel or address. Give the desk the exact pickup point and flight number, and the driver adjusts the timing to the real arrival.
