Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport (YOW) is one of the easiest airports in Canada to leave, and one of the easiest to over-think. It is a single-terminal airport about 15 km south of downtown, the road into the city is short, and four or five sensible ways exist to cover the distance. This page lays them side by side and then makes the case for a pre-booked limousine on the days when it is plainly the right tool. If you want to skip the reading, check your fixed fare in the booker and you will see the all-in price before you pay.
Onroutz.ca is a Toronto-based private-transfer desk. In Ottawa the car is driven by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local partner, while the booking, the confirmation, the support and the invoice all stay with our desk in Toronto. One booking, one confirmation, one invoice, one 24/7 contact.
How do you get from Ottawa Airport to your hotel?
YOW is about 15 km south of downtown Ottawa, a drive of roughly 20 to 30 minutes outside rush hour. You can take the O-Train Line 4 and transfer, ride OC Transpo bus Route 105, join the taxi queue, request a ride-hailing car, or pre-book a limousine or private car with a driver waiting at arrivals.
Every option below ends at the same hotel door. What changes is the number of transfers, the luggage you can realistically carry, how much of the plan depends on a flight landing on time, and whether the fare is known before you step off the aircraft.
Ottawa Airport (YOW) at a glance
YOW has one passenger terminal, which opened in 2003 and was expanded in 2008, so there is no terminal-hopping to worry about and no confusion about which door your driver is standing at. The airport is also one of the Canadian airports with U.S. preclearance, which matters on the way out: if you fly to the United States from Ottawa you clear U.S. customs and immigration here, before boarding, and should arrive earlier than you would for a domestic flight.
Where you will be standing matters more than the airport's layout. On the airport's own ground-transportation page, the arrivals curb on the road closest to the terminal is outside Level 1. Taxis form a queue outside the centre door. Pre-arranged luxury vehicles are listed at Pillars 12 and 13, the same pillar numbers used for ride-hailing pickups along the curb furthest from the terminal. Hotel shuttles use Pillars 13 to 15. The O-Train station connects to Level 3 at the north end of the terminal.
Passengers arriving from outside Canada should also check entry rules before travelling. Visa-exempt visitors flying in generally need an electronic travel authorization (eTA), which the Government of Canada's site says costs CAN$7; the rules for U.S. citizens, dual citizens and visa-required nationalities differ, so read the official eTA page before you book flights.
Ottawa Airport to downtown: every option compared
The table uses the airport's published service patterns. Where a public fare is not confirmed on an official page we have opened, the cost column says so rather than guessing.
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked limousine or private car | About 20–30 min to downtown, plus the time your driver waits | Fixed fare via the booker, quoted before you pay | Executive Sedan 2 large + 2 cabin; Luxury SUV 5–6 large; Sprinter 12 | Late arrivals, groups, business schedules, heavy bags |
| O-Train Line 4 plus Line 2 and Line 1 | About an hour with transfers, trains run 6 am to midnight | Standard OC Transpo single fare, same on bus and train | What you can carry on stairs and platforms | Light travellers, daytime, one or two people |
| OC Transpo Route 105 | Longer than the car, runs 24 hours every 30 min | Standard OC Transpo single fare | Whatever you can carry on board | Overnight arrivals on a tight budget |
| Metered taxi | About 20–30 min | Metered, not fixed | Boot of a sedan | Single travellers without a booking |
| Ride-hailing | About 20–30 min | Surge-priced when flights bank up | Depends on the car sent | A quick solo ride, if the price in the app suits |
| Hotel courtesy shuttle | Varies by hotel loop | Set by the hotel | Usually modest | Airport-area hotels |
The Line 4 O-Train takes about seven minutes between the airport and South Keys. From there you change to Line 2 and, for most downtown destinations, change again to Line 1 at Bayview. That is two platform changes with luggage. The OC Transpo trip planner shows the live times; plan on roughly an hour door to door, not the headline seven minutes.
When the train or the bus is the better choice
We would rather you take the right option than the wrong one, so here it is plainly. If you are travelling alone with a backpack, arriving in daylight, and your hotel is close to an O-Train or Route 105 stop, public transit is a perfectly good way into the city. Route 105 runs around the clock, and the Line 4 trains run from 6 am to midnight, so a 2 am arrival is a bus story, not a train story. Transit also has no exposure to road conditions on a snowy night, which counts for something in an Ottawa winter.
Taxis are the sensible fallback when you have not arranged anything: the queue is outside the centre door, and a metered ride to a downtown hotel is predictable in shape if not in price.
When a limousine or private car wins
The case for a pre-booked car at YOW is narrower than at a mega-airport, but it is real. Reach for one when any of these apply:
- Three or more travellers. A single Luxury SUV or an Executive Sedan carries the whole party in one vehicle, in one conversation, to one door.
- Heavy luggage or equipment. Conference displays, hockey bags and skis do not ride well on a Line 4 platform.
- Children. Child, toddler and booster seats are available on request at booking, and a car seat is the one item you do not want to improvise at a curb.
- A late or early flight. At 1 am or 5 am the choice is a 30-minute bus wait or a driver at arrivals; the car gets you to the hotel before the lobby has gone quiet.
- Business schedules. An executive who lands at 8:40 and has a ministry meeting at 10:00 wants a known pickup, a known drive and no stops.
- Privacy. A name board with an alias, no photography, and NDAs on request are standard conversations for us, not unusual ones.
Where your driver meets you at YOW
Your booking confirmation spells out the meeting point. Flight tracking is switched on for every airport pickup, so a delayed or early flight moves your driver with it; you do not call anyone to say you are late. On international arrivals we include 60 minutes of free waiting after landing, on domestic arrivals 30 minutes, and on non-airport pickups 15 minutes.
If you prefer to be met inside, a name-board meet and greet can be added on request. The chauffeur waits in the arrivals area holding a board with your name, or an alias if you do not want your name displayed, and walks you to the vehicle. Most vehicles carry water and phone chargers, which is useful on the first leg of a long travel day. For a longer look at how this works across airports, read how private airport transfers work, or browse our Meet and Greet service.
Limousine service in Ottawa: which vehicle for which trip
Vehicle classes are confirmed at booking and shown as "or similar":
- Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar): up to 3 passengers, 2 large and 2 cabin bags. The usual choice for one or two business travellers.
- First Class Sedan (Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar): up to 3 passengers, for arrivals where the car is part of the message.
- Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar): up to 6 passengers and 5 to 6 large bags, the right size for a family or a delegation.
- Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter): up to 12 passengers and 12 bags, for tour groups and teams; see Sprinter van with driver.
- Mini-coach and coach (20 to 56 seats), Maybach, Rolls-Royce, stretch limousines and armoured vehicles can be requested; availability is confirmed at booking.
Partner vehicles used outside Toronto are no more than four model years old, and up to seven for Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach. All vehicles and chauffeurs are licensed and commercially insured. Onroutz.ca is a transport service, not a security company: there are no armed drivers or bodyguards, though chauffeurs work alongside a client's own security team.
Downtown Ottawa, Gatineau and beyond the airport
Most YOW hotel transfers end in the downtown core, a short run from the airport: the Parliament Hill area, the ByWard Market and the streets around the Rideau Canal. Hotels in the business districts and by the Rideau Centre sit within the same 20 to 30 minute window in normal traffic. Plan an extra margin on weekday mornings and afternoons, when the Airport Parkway and the downtown approaches fill up.
The Rideau Canal is worth knowing about for another reason. The National Capital Commission runs the Rideau Canal Skateway as a 7.8 km ice path through the city; it usually opens in January and runs until early March, depending on the weather. In that season your driver can drop you close to one of the access points, and a pickup after a cold evening on the ice is easier than waiting for a taxi.
Ottawa Tourism notes that the city hosts festivals almost every weekend, and hotel demand follows. If your dates match a major conference or a long weekend, book the car early; the booker shows availability for your date. For official visitor information see Ottawa Tourism.
Hourly hire, delegations and corporate accounts
Ottawa is a government town, which means a lot of visitors have a day of back-to-back appointments rather than a single airport run. An hourly car with a driver keeps you on schedule between a morning briefing, a lunch and a late flight, and lets one vehicle handle the whole day. See executive car service and VIP transportation for how hourly and multi-leg itineraries are handled on one booking.
Corporate accounts with monthly invoicing are available, which suits departments and firms that send several people a month. If your travellers are coming through Toronto first, the same desk can chain the Toronto Pearson pickup and the Ottawa leg, or arrange the long Toronto to Ottawa drive as a single itinerary.
Departures from YOW
For a departure, ask for a pickup time that allows for check-in, security and, for U.S. flights, preclearance. The airport's drop-off guidance sends passengers to the curb outside Level 1 unless signs say otherwise, and it does not allow passenger loading on Level 3 other than taxi drop-off, so your driver follows the signed arrangements for the day and your confirmation states where to meet. Tell the booker how many bags you have, and whether you are carrying skis, instruments or a stroller.
In winter, build in extra time. Ottawa is cold enough to freeze a canal, and an early flight after overnight snow is the moment to have a driver who is already awake and watching the road. A flight-tracked pickup on the return leg works in the same way as on arrival.
How booking works
- Open the booker and enter YOW as the pickup, your hotel or address as the drop-off, the date and the passenger count.
- Choose a vehicle class. The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay.
- Add your flight number, a child seat, a name board or any special request.
- Receive one confirmation. The Toronto desk supports the trip 24/7 and sends one invoice, or bills your corporate account monthly.

Frequently asked questions
How far is Ottawa Airport from downtown?
YOW is about 15 km south of downtown Ottawa. In normal traffic the drive to a downtown hotel takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes, longer on weekday rush hours or in heavy snow. The booker accounts for your exact drop-off, so the fixed fare reflects the real route.
Is there a train from Ottawa Airport to downtown?
Not a direct one. The O-Train Line 4 connects the airport to South Keys in about seven minutes, and from there you transfer to Line 2 and usually again to Line 1. Trains run from 6 am to midnight. For overnight arrivals, OC Transpo Route 105 runs around the clock every 30 minutes.
Where do limousines pick up at Ottawa Airport?
The airport's ground-transportation page lists pre-arranged luxury vehicles at Pillars 12 and 13. If you add a meet and greet, your chauffeur waits inside arrivals with a name board and walks you out. Your booking confirmation states the exact meeting point for your flight.
How long will my driver wait after I land?
For international arrivals the free waiting time is 60 minutes after landing. For domestic flights it is 30 minutes, and for other pickups 15 minutes. Flight tracking is included on every airport pickup, so a delayed flight does not need a phone call to your driver.
Can I request a child seat?
Yes. Child seats are on request: say at booking whether you need an infant, toddler or booster seat. Add the child's age or weight in the booking notes so the right seat is fitted before the car arrives, rather than adjusted at the curb.
What is the price of a limousine from Ottawa Airport?
The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay. We do not publish rates because the fare depends on where you are going, the vehicle class and the date. A taxi is metered and a ride-hailing fare moves with demand, whereas ours is fixed when you book.
Do I need an eTA to fly into Ottawa?
Many visitors who do not need a visa do need an electronic travel authorization to fly to Canada. The Government of Canada's site states the fee and explains who is exempt, including U.S. citizens and Canadian dual citizens, who have different rules. Check the official page before you travel.
What is your cancellation policy?
More than 72 hours' notice: no charge. 72 hours or less: 10%. 48 hours or less: 50%. 24 hours or less, or a no-show: 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup. Event bookings can carry their own deadline, always printed on the confirmation.
Can the same booking cover a group or a delegation?
Yes. Multi-leg itineraries, hourly hire and several vehicles can sit on one booking, one confirmation and one invoice. For groups above six, an Executive Sprinter carries up to 12 passengers and 12 bags, and mini-coaches and coaches are available on request.
