Miami airport transfer: the short version
Miami International Airport (MIA) is compact for its traffic and close to everything that matters to a visitor: Brickell and downtown about 13 km (8 mi) east, Coral Gables and Doral on its flanks, and the beaches across Biscayne Bay. A private Miami airport transfer gets you from the arrivals hall to a hotel door without a taxi line, a surge price or a language problem on the phone. Onroutz.ca books and invoices it from Toronto; a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local partner drives.
Miami also has an unusually good argument for the private car: the beaches are reachable only by a handful of causeways, a major cruise port sits a few minutes from the airport, and many Canadians arrive for a short winter break on a tight schedule.
How do I get from Miami airport to South Beach or downtown?
Take a taxi, ride app or pre-booked private car. South Beach is about 17 km (11 mi), usually 25 to 40 minutes, longer at rush hour or on event days. Downtown and Brickell are about 13 km (8 mi) and 20 to 35 minutes. Rail and bus exist but rarely suit luggage.
Arriving in Florida from Toronto
Miami is on Eastern Time, the same as Toronto, so there is no jet lag, only the flight itself. Toronto Pearson is one of ten Canadian airports with U.S. Customs and Border Protection preclearance, so a pre-cleared flight to Miami lands as a U.S. domestic arrival. CBP's list of preclearance airports explains the process. If your flight is not pre-cleared, expect to clear immigration and customs on landing, and the queue can run long at peak times.
MIA's layout
MIA is organised by concourse rather than terminal letter: Concourse D in the north, E, F and G in the centre, H and J in the south. Concourse D is the largest. The ride can start at any of them, and your confirmation names the pickup point once your airline and arrival are known.
Miami airport transportation compared
The airport and county publish metered rates for taxis, so the table can carry verified numbers where the public sets them. Everything else is described without a dollar figure.

Taxi rates at MIA
MIA's official page for taxis and ride apps sets out the metered tariff. Taxis wait on the arrivals (ground) level outside baggage claim. The meter starts at $2.95 for the first sixth of a mile, then $0.85 for each further sixth of a mile up to one mile, then $0.55 for each sixth thereafter. A $2.00 airport charge applies, trips starting at MIA carry a $15 minimum, and vans and SUVs add 30%. See MIA's taxi and shuttle page. Older guides still quote a flat fare to South Beach; the tariff published today is metered, so check the date on anything you read.
The MIA Mover and Metrorail
The MIA Mover is a free people mover linking the terminal to the Miami Intermodal Center, which holds the Metrorail station, a bus terminal and the rental car centre. Metrorail then runs through downtown and Brickell. Miami-Dade's Metrorail page lists the fare as $2.25 and notes that the gates do not take cash. One more detail that trips people up: Brightline's Miami station is MiamiCentral in downtown, not at the airport.
When the bus or Metrorail beats the car
Metrorail is the sensible option for one traveller with a single carry-on heading to a downtown address near a station, travelling outside the afternoon peak. It is cheap and not subject to causeway traffic. Honestly, the private car does not win on cost.
The private car wins when:
- You are travelling with three or more people, or with several checked bags
- You are arriving late, when transit is thinner and you may not want to change at the Intermodal Center
- Children or older relatives are with you, and car seats or step-free access matter
- The destination is on Miami Beach, Key Biscayne or north of Aventura, where public transport takes a long way round
- You are going from the airport to a cruise ship on embarkation day
Drive times from MIA
These are typical drives in ordinary conditions. Miami's pattern is sharper than it looks: the airport is west of the bay, the beaches are east, and the connecting causeways bottleneck on weekday afternoons and during big events.
| Destination | Road distance | Typical drive time | Peak caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Doral | about 8 km / 5 mi | 10–20 min | Allow 30+ min on weekday evenings |
| Brickell and downtown Miami | about 13 km / 8 mi | 20–35 min | 45–60 min 4–7 p.m. on I-95 |
| Coral Gables | about 11 km / 7 mi | 15–30 min | School-run and rush-hour slowdowns |
| South Beach | about 17 km / 11 mi | 25–40 min | 45–70 min at peak or on event weekends |
| PortMiami cruise terminals | about 14 km / 9 mi | 20–35 min | Longest on Saturday and Sunday mornings |
| Fort Lauderdale airport | about 35 km / 22 mi | 30–50 min | 60–90 min at the evening peak |
Tolls and roads
The Dolphin Expressway (SR 836) and other expressways around MIA use electronic tolling with no cash lanes, and your driver's partner vehicle handles them. We do not add a charge for crossing the causeways to the beach; the fare in the booker is all-in.
South Beach versus the rest of Miami Beach
South Beach is the Art Deco strip at the southern tip. Mid-Beach and North Beach, including Collins Avenue towards Bal Harbour, lie further north, and the drive is longer. Tell us the hotel name, not just "Miami Beach", so we can quote the right trip. Our dedicated Miami Beach hotel transfers page covers how hotel arrivals work on the beaches.
Miami cruise transfers and Fort Lauderdale
Miami's cruise port is one of the biggest in the world, and the route from MIA to the cruise terminals is short but sensitive to timing. Embarkation windows are tight, ships turn around in a day, and the roads around the port bridge are busy on ship days. If you are pairing a flight with a ship, see Miami airport to the cruise port for the timing details and the cruise transfers hub for other ports.
Some travellers land in Fort Lauderdale for fares or schedule reasons. Our Fort Lauderdale airport to Miami page covers that 35 km link, and Fort Lauderdale airport to Port Everglades is the cruise-port version.
Limo service to Miami airport: departures
Going the other way, a limousine to Miami airport is booked with a pickup time rather than a flight. Our desk suggests a hotel pickup roughly three hours before an international departure and two hours before a domestic one, longer on Fridays and when a cruise ship day coincides. Give your airline, terminal and bag count, and the car is confirmed against that. For South Beach pickups, allow for the causeway.
Business travel and events
Miami hosts large conferences and sporting events, and hotel capacity tightens. For multi-day trips with meetings, an hourly car stays with you rather than going back and forth. Our executive car service page covers corporate accounts with monthly invoicing, and the travel desk builds multi-leg itineraries on one booking.
Meet and greet at MIA
On request, a name-board greeter waits inside arrivals with a sign carrying your name or an alias for privacy, then walks you out. This helps with first-time visitors, large baggage, and arrivals where you do not want to scan a kerb full of drivers. Details are on the meet and greet service page.
Waiting and flight tracking
We track every airport pickup. After an international landing you get 60 minutes of free waiting; after a domestic landing 30 minutes. The clock starts at the landing time on the tracker, so a delayed flight does not cost you anything. Other pickups, such as hotels, have 15 minutes.
Vehicles and capacity
For Miami's winter-break traffic, the vehicle choice is usually about luggage:
- Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar): up to 3 passengers, 2 large and 2 cabin bags
- Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar): up to 6 passengers, 5 to 6 large bags
- Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter): up to 12 passengers, 12 bags
Models are confirmed at booking. Note the children's ages at booking and the right infant, toddler or booster seat is provided. Water and phone charging are in most vehicles. Our fleet page lists the classes.
Terms and cancellation
More than 72 hours' notice: no charge. 72 hours or less: 10%. 48 hours or less: 50%. 24 hours or less or a no-show: 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup. Peak events occasionally use a different cut-off, which is stated on the confirmation. The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi from Miami airport to South Beach?
Miami taxis are metered. From MIA the meter opens at $2.95, a $2.00 airport charge applies, and trips starting at the airport have a $15 minimum, as of 2026; vans and SUVs add 30%. The total depends on traffic. Older guides cite a flat fare, so check the date. Our fare is fixed in advance.
Is there a train from Miami airport to downtown?
Yes. The free MIA Mover takes you to the Miami Intermodal Center, where Metrorail runs to downtown and Brickell. The fare is $2.25, as of 2026, and the gates do not accept cash. Brightline serves MiamiCentral downtown, not the airport, so you need Metrorail or a car to reach it.
Where do Uber and Lyft pick up at MIA?
The airport lists ride-app pickups on the arrivals (first) level and the departures (second) level, and tells you to check your app for the exact door. A pre-booked chauffeur is different: your confirmation names the meeting point, and the driver tracks your flight.
What is the closest airport to South Beach?
Miami International is the closest major airport to South Beach, about 17 km (11 mi) by road. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood is the alternative, about 35 km from Miami. Some travellers choose it for fares, and we cover that 35 km link on our Fort Lauderdale page.
How long before my flight should the car pick me up?
For international departures from MIA, plan to leave your hotel about three hours ahead, and about two hours ahead for domestic flights. Add time for Friday traffic, beach causeways and cruise-ship days. When you book, tell us your flight and we will suggest a pickup time.
Can you take us from MIA directly to a cruise ship?
Yes. The PortMiami terminals are about 14 km (9 mi) from the airport, usually a 20 to 35-minute drive. Tell us the ship and embarkation window so the car can be timed to the check-in slot. Luggage goes to the terminal with you, so a vehicle with enough space matters.
Do you offer child seats in Miami?
Yes. Add a child seat at booking; infant, toddler and booster sizes are available. Please give the age and weight of each child so the correct seat is confirmed with the local partner. Requests made at the airport cannot be guaranteed.
Is there a limo from Miami airport for a group?
Yes. The Luxury SUV takes up to 6 passengers with 5 to 6 large bags, and the Executive Sprinter takes up to 12 passengers with 12 bags. A mini-coach or coach of 20 to 56 seats can be arranged on request for larger groups.
