Canmore is where a lot of Rocky Mountain trips actually begin. It sits in the Bow Valley, 22 km east of Banff, on the near side of the Banff National Park gate, and it is the closest of the three major mountain destinations to Calgary International Airport (YYC). Tourism Canmore puts the airport at about 120 km (75 mi) away, with a drive that takes just over an hour. That is short enough to arrive in good time for dinner, and far enough that how you travel matters. This page covers the road, the town, and the practical details of a chauffeured transfer from Calgary Airport to Canmore.
What is the best way to get from Calgary Airport to Canmore?
A pre-booked private car or a scheduled shuttle are the main options. Canmore is roughly 115 to 120 km from YYC and the drive takes a little over an hour, longer in Calgary rush hour or winter weather. A private car meets your flight, goes straight to your address and carries ski gear, strollers and bags without limits.
Tourism Canmore recommends booking a shuttle directly from the airport or from downtown Calgary, and many bus and shuttle services run between Calgary and Canmore. Rental cars are the other main option. The choice usually comes down to whether you want to spend your first evening on logistics or at the table.
Calgary Airport to Canmore: every option compared
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private car with chauffeur | About 1 h 10 – 1 h 30 | Fixed fare via booker | Skis, bags, strollers | Families, groups, late arrivals, vacation rentals |
| Scheduled airport shuttle | Over 1 h 30 with other stops | Per-seat fare set by the operator | Per operator allowance | One or two travellers on a fixed schedule |
| Regional bus (seasonal) | Longer, with transfers | Set by the operator | Per operator allowance | Weekend travellers; confirm dates |
| Rental car | About 1 h 10 – 1 h 30 plus pick-up queue | Rental rate, fuel, town parking | Whatever fits | Guests exploring Kananaskis by themselves |
| Taxi or rideshare | Not usually practical at this distance | Metered or app-priced | Whatever fits | Short-notice only |
YYC's own ground transportation page lists city buses, rideshare, taxis and sedans, hotel shuttles, bus tours and rental cars, and says there is no LRT. The Canmore side is covered by Roam Transit, whose Route 3 runs Canmore to Banff in about 24 minutes. Within Canmore, Tourism Canmore says Roam offers free public transit, with a pass needed for routes to Banff, Lake Louise, Moraine Lake and Johnston Canyon.
When the shuttle or rental car is the better choice
A shuttle is fine for a solo traveller with one bag who lands near a scheduled departure. A rental car is the right tool if you want complete independence, such as driving to Kananaskis or Banff on your own timetable. We would rather you pick the right tool than book a car you do not need.
A private car is stronger in these situations:
- Family arrivals with young children. Car seats can be requested at booking, and there is no waiting around for other passengers.
- A vacation rental. Many Canmore stays are private houses or condos with key codes and quirky driveways. The driver gets the exact address and arrival instructions in advance.
- A winter arrival. Tourism Canmore says to expect snow and ice. A chauffeur who drives the Bow Valley regularly is a safer choice than a first-time winter driver.
- A group of three or more. Shuttle seats multiply. A single SUV or Sprinter does not.
- Heavy gear. Ski bags, hockey bags, bikes and climbing gear need space.
- A late-evening arrival. A driver waiting at arrivals is easier than a shuttle on a fixed timetable.
Why Canmore sits outside the park gate
Parks Canada runs Banff National Park, and the East Gate sits between Canmore and Banff. Because Canmore is on the Calgary side of the gate, you do not need a national park pass simply to arrive in Canmore town. A pass becomes relevant when you head into the park, for example to Banff, Lake Louise or Johnston Canyon.
The Parks Canada passes page explains who needs a pass: anyone spending time in the park, including stops in towns, or travelling on the scenic parkways. Westbound vehicles may use the through lane at the Banff East Gate without a pass, if they are not stopping. If your trip includes a day in Banff, you can ask the desk how park admission fits with your booking.
The practical effect: a Calgary Airport to Canmore transfer is a straightforward arrival, and any Banff visit is a separate decision. If you are going straight on to Banff, see our Calgary Airport to Banff page.
The road: ring road, Highway 1 and the Bow Valley
From YYC the driver joins the city ring road and then the Trans-Canada Highway westbound. The terrain climbs gently from prairie to foothills. As the first big peaks appear, the highway runs along the Bow Valley toward Canmore.
- Calgary traffic. The longest delays are near the city. A weekday morning or late-afternoon departure can add noticeable time to the trip.
- Weather and cameras. Alberta 511 shows road conditions, cameras, closures and construction. We check it before every departure.
- Wildlife. Elk and deer are common near the highway in the valley. The chauffeur adjusts speed to the light.
- Winter tires. Tourism Canmore recommends appropriate tires and equipment for winter.
- Scenic alternative. Highway 1A is slower and prettier, and the chauffeur can use it when the schedule allows.
Where in Canmore you might be going
Canmore is a mid-sized mountain town with several distinct areas. Tell the booker the street address or property name, and the chauffeur plans the final kilometre.
- Downtown, along Main Street and the Bow River. Restaurants, shops and hotels within walking distance. Tourism Canmore notes four paid parking zones in town, plus free parking at Elevation Place and the gravel lot behind Save-on Foods.
- The Three Sisters and Spring Creek areas. Residential neighbourhoods where many stays are in private homes and condos.
- The Canmore Nordic Centre. A trailhead for hiking, Nordic skiing and mountain biking. Tourism Canmore notes that a free seasonal Roam route, Route 12, links Canmore with Grassi Lakes and the Nordic Centre.
- The Kananaskis side. Roads to Kananaskis Country run from the Canmore area by Highway 40 and the Smith-Dorrien Trail (Highway 742).
Overnight parking is not allowed anywhere in Canmore or the surrounding parks unless you hold a campground site, per Tourism Canmore, so if you have a rental car, make sure your lodging has its own parking.
Using Canmore as a base for Banff, Lake Louise and Kananaskis
Many travellers choose Canmore for a quieter stay and then travel into the national park by day.
- Banff is 22 km west. Roam Route 3 links the two towns in about 24 minutes.
- Lake Louise has limited parking, and Tourism Canmore says a shuttle is highly recommended. A chauffeured day trip from Canmore avoids the parking contest, though the car cannot go where the road is closed.
- Moraine Lake: Tourism Canmore notes that road access to Moraine Lake is closed to all vehicles from November to May.
- Kananaskis Country is on the doorstep. The Canmore Nordic Centre is one of the places where the Kananaskis Conservation Pass can be bought in person, according to Tourism Canmore.
If you want a private car for the day, book hourly and tell the desk where you are heading. For airport-to-Banff transfers, see the page linked above.

- First Class Sedan: up to 3 passengers.
- Luxury SUV: up to 6 passengers, 5 to 6 large bags. Popular for families with ski gear.
- Executive Sprinter: up to 12 passengers and 12 bags. Good for a wedding party or a group renting a lodge.
- Mini-coach and coach, 20 to 56 seats, on request.
The fleet page shows each class.
Canmore to Calgary Airport: the return trip
The return is the same road in reverse. A practical plan is to leave Canmore about three and a half hours before an international flight and about three hours before a domestic one, allowing for the drive of just over an hour and the chance of Calgary traffic. In winter, add margin, and check Alberta 511 the night before.
If you are leaving from Banff or Lake Louise first, use a multi-leg booking so the pickup chain is correct. Our transfers hub lists other Canadian routes, including the Vancouver Airport to Whistler run for a western ski trip, and the Canada page links the rest.
How booking and the fixed fare work
Open the booker, enter the pickup, drop-off, date, time and number of passengers. The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay. We do not publish a price table, because the fare depends on where in Canmore you are staying, the vehicle class, the date and the time.
Cancellation: more than 72 hours' notice has no charge; 72 hours or less is 10%; 48 hours or less is 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show is 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup. Large events may carry a different deadline, shown on your confirmation. More answers are in the FAQ.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Canmore from Calgary Airport?
Tourism Canmore puts YYC at about 120 km (75 mi) from Canmore, and says the drive takes just over an hour. We plan 1 h 10 to 1 h 30 depending on traffic leaving Calgary and the weather in the Bow Valley.
Is there a shuttle from Calgary Airport to Canmore?
Yes. Tourism Canmore says several shuttle, bus and private operators run between the airport or downtown Calgary and Canmore. Scheduled shuttles stop at other addresses. A private car runs on your flight time and goes only to your door.
Do I need a Banff park pass to stay in Canmore?
Canmore sits outside the national park, east of the Banff East Gate, so arriving in the town does not by itself require a park pass. Parks Canada requires one if you spend time in the park, for example in Banff or at Lake Louise. Check Parks Canada for current rules.
Should I stay in Canmore or Banff?
That depends on what you want. Canmore is a quieter town with a local feel and the Nordic Centre, while Banff is closer to the main park attractions. Both are served from Calgary Airport, and many travellers split their stay between them.
How much does a private car cost from Calgary Airport to Canmore?
The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay. The figure depends on the address, the vehicle class, the date and the time of day, so we show it where it can be exact.
Can you take me from Canmore to Lake Louise or Moraine Lake?
Yes, as a day booking or one-way transfer. Tourism Canmore notes that Lake Louise has limited parking and a shuttle is recommended, and that road access to Moraine Lake is closed to all vehicles from November to May.
What if my flight is late?
Flight tracking is on for every airport pickup. You have 60 minutes of included waiting after an international flight lands, 30 after a domestic flight. The chauffeur adjusts to the real arrival time.
Can I get a child seat?
Yes. Note the children's ages at booking and the right infant, toddler or booster seat is provided. Tell us the number and ages of the children so we fit the right seats before pickup.
What about luggage and ski gear?
An Executive Sedan takes 2 large and 2 cabin bags, a Luxury SUV 5 to 6 large bags and a Sprinter up to 12. Ski and snowboard bags are best in an SUV or Sprinter. Tell the desk how many bags you are bringing.
