Heathrow is the airport where the gap between "technically possible" and "actually pleasant" is widest. A fast rail line to Paddington is signposted the moment you land, yet the right answer for a family of four with six bags, or an executive due at a 9 am meeting in the City, may be a car waiting inside arrivals. This page lays out every way from Heathrow into London with honest timings, then explains how an Onroutz.ca Heathrow airport transfer works.
What is the best way to get from Heathrow Airport to central London?
For one or two travellers with light bags, the Elizabeth line or the Heathrow Express is usually quickest and cheapest. For three or more people, heavy luggage, children, a late arrival or a fixed meeting time, a pre-booked private car from Heathrow to your door is simpler and more predictable.
Rail wins on pure speed to Paddington. A private car wins on everything after the station: the second leg across London with luggage, the stairs, the Tube change, the taxi queue at the other end. If your hotel is a short walk from Paddington, the Heathrow Express is hard to beat. If it is in Kensington, Mayfair, the City, Canary Wharf or Surrey, the maths shifts quickly.
Heathrow's four terminals and where your car meets you
Heathrow has four passenger terminals: Terminal 2, Terminal 3, Terminal 4 and Terminal 5. Terminals 2 and 3 are next to each other and share a rail station. Terminal 4 is on the south side of the airport, and Terminal 5 sits on its own to the west. Air Canada and other Star Alliance carriers use Terminal 2, which matters if you are flying in from Toronto, so check your confirmation rather than assuming.
Your arrival terminal affects only one thing in our process: where the chauffeur meets you. Heathrow requires that pick-ups are made from its Terminal Parking or Park and Ride car parks, and it does not allow vehicles to wait in the terminal drop-off zones. That is why the chauffeur does not circle the kerb. On request the chauffeur meets you inside arrivals with a name board, takes your trolley, and walks you to the car. You can ask for an alias on the board if you prefer privacy.
| Terminal | Rail station | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| T2 | Shared T2/T3 station, a few minutes' walk by pedestrian subway | Air Canada and other Star Alliance flights |
| T3 | Shared T2/T3 station | Many long-haul carriers; check your confirmation |
| T4 | Station below T4 Arrivals | Various carriers on the south side |
| T5 | Station in the terminal basement | British Airways, with its own approach road |
Every way from Heathrow into London, compared
The table below compares the options to central London. Times are door-to-door estimates for a traveller landing outside the worst rush hours; the rail figures come from Heathrow's own transport pages and the public fares are written "as of 2026".
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heathrow Express to Paddington | About 35 – 50 min including walking and the onward leg | Single £26 Standard as listed on heathrow.com in 2026; advance singles from £10 (30+ days ahead, limited) | Trolleys to the platform, lifts, then your own carrying | Solo travellers heading to Paddington or Bayswater |
| Elizabeth line | About 45 – 70 min depending on destination | Pay as you go by contactless; fare on tfl.gov.uk | Step-free at the airport stations, busy at peak | Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Liverpool Street, Canary Wharf |
| Piccadilly line | About 60 – 75 min | Lowest-cost rail; pay as you go by contactless | Crowded carriages, stairs at some stations | Budget trips to Earl's Court, South Kensington, Piccadilly, King's Cross |
| Coach to Victoria Coach Station | About 60 – 90 min | Fare on the coach operator's site | Hold space, easy loading | Travellers on a strict budget |
| Black cab or minicab at the rank | 45 – 90 min | Metered or quoted at the desk | Good | Spontaneous trips |
| Pre-booked private car | 45 – 90 min | Fixed fare via booker | Everything in the boot, door to door | 3+ travellers, children, heavy bags, late arrivals, business schedules |
When is the train the better choice? When you are alone, travelling light, and your destination sits on the line. A Heathrow Express journey from Terminals 2 and 3 to Paddington is 15 minutes with trains every 15 minutes, and Terminal 5 adds about five minutes. From Terminal 4 you change at Terminals 2 and 3 on a free transfer train, a further four minutes, so treat the 15-minute headline as a Terminal 2/3 figure.
Heathrow Express, the Elizabeth line and the Piccadilly line in detail
The Heathrow Express runs non-stop to London Paddington. Heathrow's page lists the first train from Paddington at 04:34 Monday to Saturday and 04:55 on Sundays, and the last departure from Terminal 5 at 23:57. Children aged 15 and under travel free in Standard Class with a paying adult. Paddington is a good arrival point only if your final stop is nearby; otherwise you are paying for speed and then standing in a taxi queue or descending to the Underground.
Heathrow describes the journey to central London as under 45 minutes, with stops including Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon and Liverpool Street. At Terminals 2 and 3 there are six trains an hour, four going on to Abbey Wood and two to Shenfield; Terminal 4 and Terminal 5 have a lighter service. The first Elizabeth line train towards central London leaves Terminals 2 and 3 at 05:21 on weekdays and the last at 00:12, per Heathrow's page.
The Piccadilly line takes under an hour to central London according to Heathrow, with trains every 10 minutes. It serves all terminals and is the lowest-cost rail option; the trade-off is a long ride on a line that fills up with commuters.
When a private car from Heathrow beats the train
Six situations make clients choose a car.
- Three or more travellers. A rail ticket for each person adds up, and a single vehicle for the group removes the logistics.
- Heavy luggage or oversized bags. Golf bags, strollers, ski equipment and trunks do not suit a platform change.
- Children and car seats. Child, toddler and booster seats are available on request at booking, which is difficult to improvise at a taxi rank.
- Late or early arrivals. After a delayed overnight flight, a driver tracking your flight is easier than finding the last Elizabeth line train.
- Business schedules. A car already waiting removes the variable of a delayed platform.
- Privacy. Some clients prefer a closed door and a quiet ride rather than an open concourse.
Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar) seats up to three passengers with two large and two cabin bags. First Class Sedan (S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar) also seats three. A Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar) takes up to six passengers with five or six large bags, and the Executive Sprinter takes up to 12 passengers and 12 bags. Models are "or similar", and the exact vehicle is confirmed at booking. See the full fleet for details.
How your Onroutz.ca Heathrow airport transfer works
Onroutz.ca is a Toronto-based desk. For Heathrow, the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner in the London area, and it is booked, confirmed, supported and invoiced by the Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto. One booking and one invoice cover it, and the same 24/7 desk answers every question. Partner vehicles are no more than four model years old, and Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach are accepted up to seven years.
- Enter your flight number. We track the flight, so a delayed landing moves the pickup with you.
- Choose the vehicle class for your party and luggage.
- See the fixed fare. The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay.
- Receive the confirmation with chauffeur details and a meeting point.
- Land and walk out. After an international landing there is 60 minutes of free waiting, which comfortably covers immigration queues. Domestic arrivals get 30 minutes.
Multi-leg itineraries, such as hotel, a day of meetings and the return to the airport, can sit on one booking, and corporate accounts with monthly invoicing are available.
Entry rules for Canadians, Americans and other visitors
Heathrow is a UK port of entry, and the UK is separate from the Schengen area. Visitors from Canada and the United States generally need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation before they fly. The gov.uk page states that an ETA costs £20, lets you travel for up to six months, is required for each traveller including babies and children, and does not guarantee entry. It also says you need an ETA if you pass through border control at a UK airport before continuing your journey, so a stopover in London on the way to Europe can be affected. Apply only through the official government service; third-party sites may charge more.
Allow extra time in the immigration hall; the 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing covers it.
Road charges, drop-off fees and what they mean for a private car
London adds two road charges visitors do not expect. The Congestion Charge is £18 a day if paid on the day, applying Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 18:00 and on weekends and bank holidays from 12:00 to 18:00, according to Transport for London. Heathrow itself also charges £7 each time a taxi or private hire vehicle enters its terminal drop-off areas, and it does not permit pick-ups or waiting there.
These charges make a street-hail fare hard to predict. When you book with us, the fixed fare is quoted before you pay and road charges on the route are accounted for in it, so no meter runs in traffic on the M4.
Driving from Heathrow: the routes, the traffic and the hours that hurt
Most trips from Heathrow into central London take the M4 east towards the Chiswick flyover and then the A4, Cromwell Road or the Hammersmith approaches. Heathrow's own advice is to allow at least an hour to reach central London by car. In light traffic you can be at a Mayfair hotel in 45 minutes. On a Friday between 16:00 and 19:00, or during a sports event at Twickenham or Wembley, 90 minutes is a safer assumption.
Typical drive times and distances from Heathrow:
- Mayfair or Knightsbridge: about 24 km (15 mi), 45 – 90 min.
- The City or Canary Wharf: about 35 – 40 km (22 – 25 mi), 60 – 100 min.
- Gatwick Airport: about 70 km (43 mi), 60 – 90 min via the M25 and M23; see Heathrow to Gatwick.
- Southampton cruise port: about 115 km (72 mi), around 1 h 15 – 1 h 45; see Southampton cruise transfers.
Heathrow Airport transfers to other London stations and airports
Many itineraries chain two London gateways. For the Eurostar at St Pancras or northern trains at King's Cross, see the King's Cross and St Pancras rail transfer page. For hotel arrivals in the centre, Heathrow to central London goes street by street. If a connecting flight leaves from Gatwick, read the Gatwick airport transfer guide first.
The Europe private transfer hub links every gateway we cover, and the airport transfers hub lists them all. Unsure between a taxi, an app and a booked car? See airport transfers versus taxis and rideshares.
Meet and greet, flights and waiting time at Heathrow
Flight tracking is included on every airport pickup, and train and ship arrivals are tracked too. After an international landing the free waiting time is 60 minutes; after a domestic landing it is 30; on other pickups it is 15 minutes. For arrivals where you would like a person at the door of the hall rather than a text message, the airport meet and greet service puts a name board inside arrivals and a chauffeur beside you from baggage reclaim to the car.
No photographs of passengers and no posts about trips; an NDA is signed whenever you ask. Infant carriers, toddler seats and boosters are available; request them when you book. Water and phone charging are in most vehicles. Onroutz.ca is a transport service, not a security company: there are no armed drivers or bodyguards, and the desk works alongside a client's own security team.
Official sources worth bookmarking
Heathrow publishes live transport pages for the Heathrow Express, the terminal drop-off charge and central London travel options. The UK government's ETA guidance is the only place to apply, and Transport for London lists the Congestion Charge rules and hours. Fares and timetables change, so check them again before you fly.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest way to get from Heathrow Airport to London?
The Piccadilly line is the lowest-cost rail option, and a coach to Victoria Coach Station is also inexpensive. Both take longer than the Heathrow Express or the Elizabeth line. If you are travelling as a group, a single booked car can compare well because the cost is shared, and the fixed fare is quoted before you pay.
Do you need an ETA to transfer through Heathrow?
Gov.uk says you need an ETA if you pass through border control at a UK airport before continuing your journey, and each traveller needs one, including children. The ETA costs £20 and lasts up to six months. Check the government page for airside transit rules before you fly, and apply only through the official service.
How much is an Uber from Heathrow to Gatwick?
App fares move with demand, time of day, the M25 and the airport's drop-off charges, so there is no honest single figure. Heathrow also charges £7 per entry to its drop-off zones, and Gatwick charges a minimum of £10 for its zones. For a fixed fare quoted before you pay, use the booker.
How much time do I need to transfer from Gatwick to Heathrow?
Gatwick's own page gives about 1 hour 30 minutes by train via Thameslink and the Elizabeth line, and about one hour by coach. By road the M25 and M23 take 60 – 90 minutes depending on traffic. Leave a long buffer for an onward flight; see our Heathrow to Gatwick guide.
Does a free shuttle link Heathrow with Gatwick?
Neither airport lists a free shuttle between the two. The public options are the train via central London or a coach, and the private option is a pre-booked car. Check each airport's current transport page, since services change.
Can a private car park right outside the terminal at Heathrow?
No. Heathrow does not allow pick-ups in its terminal drop-off zones and directs them to Terminal Parking or Park and Ride car parks. Your chauffeur can meet you inside arrivals with a name board and walk you to the vehicle, so you are not looking for a car on a busy forecourt.
What is your cancellation policy for Heathrow pickups?
Cancellation is free with more than 72 hours' notice. Inside 72 hours the charge is 10%, inside 48 hours 50%, and inside 24 hours, or for a no-show, 100%. Every deadline is counted from the scheduled pickup, and a big event can carry its own deadline, printed on your confirmation.
Do you serve Heathrow for hourly hire as well as one-way transfers?
Yes, a car can be hired by the hour for meetings, shopping or a day across London, and a multi-leg itinerary can sit on one booking. Corporate accounts with monthly invoicing are available. Start in the booker or see the services overview.
