The Riviera Maya begins at Playa del Carmen, and for most visitors it is the first real decision after landing: bus, train, taxi or private car. The distance from Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen is about 55 km (34 miles) along Highway 307, which takes 45 to 70 minutes in normal conditions and longer on peak days. Onroutz.ca arranges the private transfer on that route at a fixed fare quoted before you pay. This page compares every way to make the trip, so you can pick the one that fits your flight, your bags and your hotel.
What is the best way to get from Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen?
For one or two travellers with light bags, the ADO coach is a sound low-cost choice. For three or more, for families, for heavy luggage or for a late landing, a private transfer is better: it goes straight to the hotel, the driver tracks your flight and the fare is fixed before you book.
Both are real options, and the right answer depends on how you travel. The coach runs on a schedule and stops at a terminal in Playa del Carmen, so you still need to reach your hotel. A taxi works if you arrive without a booking, but it is not metered. A private car is priced per vehicle, not per head, which is why it compares well for groups. The train is attractive on paper, although its timetable is limited, as explained below.
The rest of this page gives the route, the timing, a mode-by-mode comparison and the details of Playa del Carmen that affect the last kilometre, such as the pedestrian street, the Cozumel ferry and the resort gates south of town.
The route: Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen by road
The airport lies south of Cancun, on the mainland side of the lagoon system. From the terminals, the road meets Highway 307, the main federal highway along the coast of Quintana Roo, and runs south through Puerto Morelos before reaching Playa del Carmen. The distance is about 55 km (34 miles). Playa del Carmen is roughly 68 km from downtown Cancun, which gives a sense of how much shorter the trip is from the airport than from the city.
The usual drive time is 45 to 70 minutes. The lower figure applies at off-peak times, and the upper one to Friday and Sunday afternoons, to holiday weeks and to mornings when the Puerto Morelos stretch backs up. A rental car driver quotes around 45 to 60 minutes without stops. If your hotel is in the north of Playa del Carmen, the drive is shorter than if it is in Playacar, the gated district south of the ferry pier.
Playa del Carmen is the second-largest city in Quintana Roo, with about 305,000 residents at the 2020 count, and traffic through the town centre can add 10 to 20 minutes at busy times. For hotels in the far south, near Xcaret, see the notes on resort gates below.

When the ADO coach is better. If you are travelling alone with a single bag, your hotel is near the bus station in Playa del Carmen and you land in the daytime, the coach is a reasonable choice. It is a published service, and it does not ask you to choose a driver.
When the train is better. The Tren Maya station sits beside the airport, and a connecting service links it to the terminals. The service on the Cancun to Playa del Carmen section has been reported to resume on 15 August 2026 with two morning departures each way, at 6:45 and 10:30 from Cancun, so it does not suit afternoon or evening arrivals. Timetables change, so check the Tren Maya site before you rely on it.
When a shared van is a poor fit. Shared vans make many stops. If your hotel is the last on the list, the 55 km becomes a tour of the corridor.
When the private car wins. With three or more travellers, with children, with golf or dive bags, with an evening landing or with a hotel in Playacar or on the road to Xcaret, the direct drive is simpler. It is also the better option if you want a driver waiting after a long flight.
How a private transfer from Cancun airport works
Booking takes minutes: flight number, hotel and party size. The Toronto desk confirms the booking and hands it to a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local partner. The driver tracks your flight, waits at the arrivals exit with a name board and takes you directly to the hotel. International arrivals include 60 minutes of free waiting from landing. The Toronto desk handles the confirmation, the support and the invoice, so you have one contact whatever happens.
If you want the driver to meet you inside arrivals, ask for a name-board meet and greet at booking, and use an alias on the board if you prefer. Flight tracking works out which terminal you will land at, so you do not need to know. For the airport itself, including terminals and the Hotel Zone, see Cancun airport transfers. For how a private service compares with other modes, read airport transfer vs taxi vs rideshare.
Taxis are the alternative when you did not plan ahead. The Government of Canada's advice is to use only officially marked taxis, avoid hailing street taxis and, where you pay by card, to book and prepay at the designated boarding area. If you decide to use an app, it advises confirming the driver's identity and licence plate before you get in.
Playa del Carmen: where your hotel sits and how the last kilometre works
Playa del Carmen is spread along the coast, and the experience depends on where you are staying.
- Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue): the pedestrian street lined with shops, restaurants and clubs. Hotels on or beside it are reached from the side streets, because cars cannot use the pedestrian stretch. The driver stops at the nearest access point and a porter or a short walk completes the trip.
- The Centro and north: quieter streets with boutique hotels and apartments. Street numbers can be hard to follow, so give the desk the hotel name and the nearest cross street.
- Playacar: a gated district south of the ferry pier with large resorts and a golf course. The gate may require your reservation name.
- South of town toward Xcaret: resorts and parks along the highway. Xcaret Eco Park is just south of town.
The ferry to Cozumel leaves from the pier in Playa del Carmen. If you have a ferry booked on the day you land, tell the desk the departure time and we will work out whether the connection is realistic; allow time for immigration, baggage and the drive, and keep a buffer in case the flight runs late. For departures from Playa, the same applies in reverse.
Timing the trip: arrival day and the return to the airport
On arrival day, the pace is set by your flight: after landing you will clear immigration and customs, and the drive starts when you walk out. Most hotels hold rooms until the afternoon, so a morning arrival often means luggage storage and a beach day. If you land in the evening, the drive is shorter at night, though the highway is darker and the Government of Canada recommends avoiding travel after dark where possible, a good reason to use a pre-booked driver with a vehicle you know.
For the return trip, plan to reach the airport about three hours before an international departure. With a drive of 45 to 70 minutes, that means leaving Playa del Carmen about four hours ahead on a normal day and a little earlier on Sundays and holiday weeks. The ADO coach and the train run on fixed schedules and do not always align with your flight, which is a reason travellers book a private pickup for the way back. A private transfer also lets you leave later and have a last breakfast.
Beyond Playa del Carmen: Puerto Aventuras, Akumal and Tulum
South of Playa del Carmen, Highway 307 continues to Puerto Aventuras, Akumal and Tulum. Each adds time and each has its own access roads; for the south end of the coast, see Cancun airport to Tulum. Multi-stop trips can sit on one booking: for example, an airport pickup to Playa del Carmen, followed by a morning pickup to Tulum two days later. If you plan to move between hotels, ask the desk to add each leg.
On the other side, Puerto Morelos lies between the airport and Playa del Carmen, and it is a short stop if you want to see the town or catch a snorkelling tour. A driver can stop for a few minutes if the booking says so.
Entry paperwork and the Visitax
Travellers flying into Mexico use a digital migratory form and carry it as proof of legal status. The Government of Canada says tourist visas are not required for stays of up to 180 days, and the UK government explains that you can download digital proof of entry from the National Migration Institute portal. The state of Quintana Roo, which includes Playa del Carmen, also charges a visitor tax. The UK government says you can pay it online before or during your stay and must show proof of payment at the airport before leaving. Read the Government of Canada's Mexico page and the UK government's entry requirements for Mexico before you fly.
Vehicles, child seats and groups
For one to three people, the Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar) holds 2 large and 2 cabin bags. The Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar) takes up to 6 passengers with 5 to 6 large bags. The Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter) takes up to 12 passengers and 12 bags. Every class is "or similar", and the exact model is confirmed when you book. Child, toddler and booster seats can be added on request. See the fleet.
For wider context, see the resort transfers hub and the Caribbean and Mexico overview. Other resort pages include Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta, and the Cancun Hotel Zone page covers the strip north of the airport.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Playa del Carmen from Cancun airport?
About 55 km (34 miles) by road along Highway 307. The drive normally takes 45 to 70 minutes, and more on Friday and Sunday afternoons or during holiday weeks. Playa del Carmen is roughly 68 km from downtown Cancun, so the airport is the closer starting point.
How much is a taxi from Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen?
Taxis on this route are not metered, so the fare is agreed or sold by zone and varies with the vehicle and the time. The Government of Canada advises using officially marked taxis and prepaying at the designated area. Onroutz.ca quotes one fixed fare on the booker, for your exact route and vehicle, before payment.
Is there a train from Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen?
The Tren Maya has a station beside the airport and has been reported to run two morning departures each way on this section from 15 August 2026, with a connecting service from the terminals. The timetable is limited and can change, so check the railway's site and your flight time.
Is the ADO bus cheaper than a private transfer?
For a solo traveller, usually yes, because the coach is priced per seat. For three or more travellers the comparison narrows, since a private transfer is priced per vehicle and goes to the hotel. The coach ends at a bus station, so add the cost and time of the last leg.
Can I go from Cancun airport to the Cozumel ferry in Playa del Carmen?
Yes. The ferry leaves from the pier in Playa del Carmen. Tell the desk the departure time and we will work out whether the connection is realistic and schedule the pickup. Allow time for immigration, baggage claim and traffic, and keep a buffer in case your flight is late.
Where does my driver meet me at Cancun airport?
The driver waits past the customs exit with a name board, and you can ask for a meet and greet inside arrivals. Flight tracking tells us which terminal you land at. If you cannot find the driver, message the 24/7 desk from the link in your confirmation.
What if my flight is late or I miss the driver?
We track the flight, so the pickup moves with it. International arrivals include 60 minutes of free waiting from landing, and domestic arrivals include 30. If your plans change, tell the desk before the pickup time. Cancellation terms count from the scheduled pickup: no charge with more than 72 hours' notice.
