What is the best way to get from Atlanta airport to the city?

For one traveller with a light bag, MARTA's train from the airport station to downtown and Midtown is the least expensive and avoids traffic. For two or more people, heavy bags, a late arrival or a fixed schedule, a pre-booked car service from Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL) is the most predictable way to the door.

Atlanta is a city of long distances and hard-to-guess traffic. The airport is 10 miles from downtown, but the trip to Buckhead, the northern suburbs or a corporate campus on the Perimeter is a different journey from the one to a downtown hotel. This page is for anyone searching for Atlanta airport car service or Atlanta airport transportation: it shows what each option really costs in time, what the airport itself publishes, and where a pre-booked chauffeur earns the booking. Everywhere outside Toronto, the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured US-licensed local transfer partner and is booked, confirmed, supported and invoiced by the Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto.

The taxi flat fares include a $1.50 airport surcharge and add $2 for each extra passenger. Check the current list on the airport's ground transportation page before you travel, because fares are revised and older figures circulate online.

MARTA: when the train is the right choice

MARTA's Airport station is the southern end of the Red and Gold lines, and MARTA's airport page lists weekday service from about 4:45 am to 1 am and weekend service from about 6 am to 1 am. The standard fare is $2.50 per one-way trip, with up to four transfers, and you can tap a contactless bank card or phone to pay. For a downtown or Midtown hotel next to a station, it is hard to beat.

Know its limits. After rush hour, a trip to Buckhead or the northern stations needs a change at Lindbergh Center, and the stations are not always next to the hotel or office you want. Carrying two suitcases through a change of train is no fun, and MARTA stops running around 1 am.

Taxis and rideshare: how pickup actually works

Taxi pickup at the Domestic Terminal is in the Ground Transportation Center; at the International Terminal, taxis wait on the arrival level outside door A-1. The flat fares apply to three zones around downtown, Midtown and Buckhead; trips outside the zones run on the meter. Rideshare pickups at the Domestic Terminal use the North Economy lot, which is away from the terminal curb.

Taxis and rideshare work well for solo travellers who arrive in daylight. They are weaker when you need certainty, because the wait at the stand, the surge in an app and the lack of a named driver all add risk.

When a pre-booked car service is the better choice

  1. You land late. After a 10 pm landing, MARTA service ends soon and a rideshare queue can take time. A chauffeur is waiting at the agreed spot.
  2. You travel with a group. A Luxury SUV carries up to six passengers and five to six large bags. An Executive Sprinter carries up to 12.
  3. You have a schedule. A fixed pickup lets a meeting, a check-in or a dinner start on time. The chauffeur tracks your flight.
  4. You have children. Travelling with children? Ask for an infant, toddler or booster seat when you book.
  5. You want privacy. A chauffeur will not photograph you or mention your trip online, and NDAs can be signed on request.
  6. You travel on business. Corporate accounts with monthly invoicing and multi-leg itineraries on one booking suit regular visitors.

How pre-arranged pickup works at ATL

The airport's rule is simple: limousine and car service must be arranged in advance. Any state-licensed limousine company may drop off at the terminal curb, but only companies permitted by the airport's Ground Transportation office may pick up clients, so any partner booked for your trip must hold that airport permit.

  • Domestic Terminal: after you book, the chauffeur meets you inside the terminal near the atrium or at the curb on the South lower level; your confirmation names the spot.
  • International Terminal: the chauffeur meets you inside on the Arrivals level or outside on the arrival outer curb, as stated on your confirmation.
  • Meet and greet: on request, a chauffeur waits inside arrivals with a name board and can use an alias for privacy. See meet and greet.
  • Waiting time: 60 minutes free after international landings, 30 after domestic, counted from the actual landing.

Where the car goes: distances from ATL

Distances are approximate road distances, and drive times are for off-peak and peak weekdays.

DestinationApprox. distanceOff-peakWeekday peak
Downtown Atlanta10 mi / 16 km20 – 30 min45 – 75 min
Midtown12 mi / 19 km25 – 35 min50 – 80 min
Buckhead17 mi / 27 km30 – 45 min60 – 90 min
Perimeter Center (Dunwoody, Sandy Springs)24 mi / 39 km35 – 50 min70 – 100 min
Alpharetta35 mi / 56 km45 – 60 min80 – 120 min

These ranges are planning figures, not guarantees. The chauffeur checks live traffic and picks the best of I-85, I-75 and I-285 on the day.

Atlanta's traffic: what to expect

The Downtown Connector, where I-75 and I-85 merge through the centre of the city, is the pinch point for anything heading north. The I-285 ring road, known locally as the Perimeter, is the main route for crossing the metro without entering downtown, and it can be slow at both ends of the working day. Fridays, game days at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and State Farm Arena, and major conventions at the Georgia World Congress Center all add to the load. Book early for those days, and let the desk know the venue so the chauffeur can plan the drop-off lane.

International arrivals add a step before any of this begins. Passengers landing at the Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal clear US immigration and customs first, and the queue varies a great deal with how many long-haul flights land together. The 60 minutes of included waiting after an international landing exists for that reason, and it is counted from the actual landing time that the chauffeur sees on the flight tracker. If your connection is domestic, the 30 included minutes start at the same moment, and a short walk through the Domestic Terminal atrium is usually all that separates you from the car.

For a departure from Atlanta, the same logic runs in reverse. The chauffeur drops you at the terminal curb, with the Plane Train and the concourse security lines behind you, so the safest plan is to be at the curb at least two hours before a domestic flight and three before an international one. Weekday evenings and Sunday afternoons are the days when that rule matters most.

Booking and cancellation

The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay. Cancellation is counted from the scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours' notice is free; 72 hours or less is 10%; 48 hours or less is 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show is 100%. If your trip falls during a major event, check the confirmation: the deadline may differ.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi from Atlanta airport to downtown?

The airport posts flat fares for taxis: as of 2026, $37.50 to downtown, $39.50 to Midtown and $49.50 to Buckhead for one passenger, with $2 for each extra passenger. Check the airport's ground transportation page for the current list. Our fixed fare is quoted in the booker.

Is there a train from Atlanta airport to downtown?

Yes. MARTA's Airport station sits in the Domestic Terminal and connects to downtown and Midtown on the Red and Gold lines. The standard fare is $2.50 per one-way trip. It is the least expensive option for solo travellers with light bags to hotels near stations.

What is the cheapest way to get from ATL to Buckhead?

MARTA is the least expensive, with a change at Lindbergh Center after rush hour. Many travellers then need a short taxi or rideshare from the Buckhead station. With luggage or more than one passenger, a direct car service is usually simpler.

Are airport limousines worth the expense in Atlanta?

They are worth it when you arrive late, travel with several people or luggage, or have a fixed appointment. The chauffeur tracks your flight, meets you at an agreed spot, and drives you straight to your destination at a fixed fare.

How do I find my driver at Hartsfield-Jackson?

At the Domestic Terminal, the chauffeur meets you inside near the atrium or at the curb on the South lower level. At the International Terminal, the chauffeur meets you on the Arrivals level or the outer curb. Your confirmation names the spot, and a name-board greeting is available on request.

How much should I tip a limo driver in Atlanta?

A tip of 15 to 20 per cent is the common range for a chauffeured trip in the United States. Check whether your booking already includes a gratuity. Add a little more if the chauffeur manages a lot of luggage or a long wait.

Can I pre-book a car for the evening rush?

Yes. Book early, and tell us the destination so the chauffeur can plan the route. Weekday peaks on the Downtown Connector can double the drive, so your confirmation shows the pickup time and an estimated arrival.

What happens if my flight to Atlanta is late?

The chauffeur tracks your flight, so the pickup follows your actual landing time. After landing, 60 minutes of waiting are included for international arrivals and 30 minutes for domestic. If the delay is longer, the 24/7 desk advises on the options.
