What are the best Melbourne airport transfers from Tullamarine?
For most travellers the best Melbourne airport transfer is a pre-booked private car: your chauffeur tracks your flight, meets you at the airport's chauffeur meeting point and drives about 23 km to the CBD in 25–40 minutes off-peak. SkyBus is the sensible budget option, and there is no train to the airport yet.
Melbourne is a city that runs on its roads and trams, and its airport is a long way out. Tullamarine sits north-west of the centre, joined to the city by the Tullamarine Freeway, which forms part of the CityLink toll road. The drive is simple. What changes it is the time of day, and the difference is bigger than most visitors expect.
This page covers the terminals, the realistic drive times, the toll question and the one fact that surprises visitors from cities with an airport train: the Melbourne Airport rail link is still under construction. It then tells you honestly when SkyBus beats a car, and when a pre-booked transfer is worth it.
Melbourne Airport's four terminals and the T123 Transport Hub
Melbourne Airport has four terminals: Terminal 1 for Qantas domestic, Terminal 2 for international flights, Terminal 3 for Virgin Australia domestic, and Terminal 4 for Jetstar, Rex, Virgin Australia and Link Airways services. The airport has introduced free pick-up and drop-off zones for Terminals 1, 2 and 3 in the new T123 Transport Hub, with pick-up on Level 2, undercover, and drop-off on Level 3. Terminal 4 is not included in those zones. The airport states that pick-up arrangements for taxis and rideshare are unchanged.
Pre-arranged chauffeurs are a separate category. Melbourne Airport's own transport page says chauffeurs meet passengers at designated chauffeur meeting points inside the airport, which is exactly how our pickups work: the driver is waiting inside, not circling the kerb. You can read the airport's getting-to-and-from page and the pick-up and drop-off hub page for the current layout, because it is changing.
How far is Tullamarine from the CBD and the suburbs?
| Destination | About distance | Typical drive time | Peak caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Melbourne CBD and Southern Cross | about 23 km | 25–40 min | 50–80 min on weekdays 3–7 pm |
| Southbank and Docklands | about 25 km | 30–45 min | Slow at the evening peak |
| St Kilda and Albert Park | about 33 km | 40–60 min | Event days add more |
| Yarra Valley wine region | about 65 km | 60–80 min | Weekends busier |
The airport's official page describes the CBD as "approximately a 30-minute fare from Melbourne Airport". The other distances are rounded estimates for planning. The pattern is consistent: the airport runs smoothly in the middle of the day and badly between 3 pm and 7 pm on weekdays, when the freeway into the city fills.

| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SkyBus to Southern Cross | 35–60 min plus your last leg | Fixed public fare; see operator | Under-bus hold | Solo travellers going to the CBD |
| Taxi from the rank | 30–60 min | Metered; tolls are extra | 2 large bags | Two travellers, no booking |
| Rideshare | 30–60 min | Surge-priced | Depends on the car | Short notice |
| Hotel or airport coach | 45–75 min | Varies | Limited | Group tours |

SkyBus advertises departures every 10 minutes and a "turn up and go" service from 4 am to 1 am, seven days a week, on its official site. It ends at the Southern Cross coach terminal, so your last leg is a tram, a taxi or a walk.
When SkyBus is the better choice
If you are one traveller with one or two bags, you are staying near Southern Cross Station and you are landing between 4 am and 1 am, SkyBus is a good, uncomplicated option. The service runs often enough that you rarely wait, and it does the same job as a taxi without the meter.
It is also a good choice for a solo traveller in no hurry, or for a lunchtime arrival when roads are quiet and the bus keeps pace with a car. We would tell you the same on a call. A private car is not a better answer for every trip, and for these trips SkyBus is the better value.
When a private airport transfer in Melbourne wins
The private car pulls ahead in five situations.
- Three or more passengers. A sedan seats three, a Luxury SUV seats up to six and an Executive Sprinter seats up to twelve, so a group stays together.
- Heavy bags, skis or sports gear. Melbourne's sport calendar brings golf clubs, cricket kits and cycling cases. Tell the desk and the vehicle is sized to the load.
- Children. Child seats come in infant, toddler and booster sizes and can be added to the booking.
- A hotel off the SkyBus route. The bus ends at Southern Cross. If your hotel is in Southbank, South Yarra or St Kilda, you add a second leg with luggage.
- An evening arrival. Between 3 and 7 pm on weekdays the road is slowest, and a confirmed driver with a fixed fare removes the guesswork.

Tolls and the Tullamarine Freeway
The fast way into the city is CityLink, the toll road that links the airport, the CBD and the port. Slower surface-road alternatives exist, and a driver who knows the network chooses between them depending on the destination, the time of day and the incident reports. The tolling company, Linkt, explains the payment options and offers a route-comparison tool on its official site. Tolls vary by entry and exit point, so we do not quote a number here. With a pre-booked car you do not need to look it up: the fixed fare we quote before you pay is the fare you pay, and tolls on the route are handled on our side.
Arrivals at any hour: Melbourne Airport has no curfew
Melbourne Airport operates around the clock, unlike Sydney, which restricts night-time movements. That makes it a regular late-night and early-morning arrival point for flights from Asia and the Gulf. If your flight lands at 4 am, your chauffeur is waiting, SkyBus has just started its day, and the roads are clear. A fixed fare also means the same price regardless of the hour.
Flights are tracked. We allow 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing, 30 after a domestic landing and 15 on other pickups. Most international arrivals need 30 to 60 minutes to clear immigration, biometric checks and the baggage belt, so the hour is usually enough.
Meeting your chauffeur
A name-board meet and greet inside the terminal is available on request, with an alias on the board for privacy. Otherwise your chauffeur messages you the meeting point and walks you to the car. The vehicle is parked for you, so you are not queueing for a taxi rank or looking for a rideshare zone on Level 2.
Visitors from Canada need an Electronic Travel Authority before flying to Australia, applied for through the official app. The Department of Home Affairs controls the rules and fees, so use only the official application and check the requirements for your passport before you book flights.
Beyond the CBD: the Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula and the coast
Many visitors treat Melbourne as a base for day trips. The Yarra Valley, with its wineries, is about 65 km from the airport. The Mornington Peninsula, with its beaches and cellar doors, is further south, and the Great Ocean Road is a long day or an overnight. The drive times are long enough that a single driver for the day saves a lot of coordination.
For these, ask about personal driver hire, where the same chauffeur and vehicle stay with you for the day, or the luxury chauffeur service for a more formal trip. A group of ten can use the Sprinter van with driver.
Race days, Cup week and large events
Melbourne's calendar has pinch points. The Australian Open takes over Melbourne Park in January, the Formula 1 Grand Prix runs at Albert Park in March, and Melbourne Cup Day is the first Tuesday in November. On those days roads close, hotels fill and the CBD approaches change. Tell the desk if you are travelling during one, and book early. Events can carry a different cancellation deadline, printed on the confirmation. See also the events hub.
If you are arriving by sea, the cruise terminal at Station Pier is a different run from the airport. Our cruise transfers hub explains embarkation timings.
How Onroutz.ca delivers a Melbourne transfer
We are a Toronto-based booking desk, and we do not own cars or offices in Australia. Frequently asked questions
How far is Melbourne Airport from the CBD?
About 23 km. The airport's own page calls the CBD roughly a 30-minute taxi fare. Weekday afternoons between 3 and 7 pm can stretch that to 50–80 minutes.
Is there a train from Melbourne Airport to the city?
Not yet. The Melbourne Airport Rail link is under construction and is not open. Current options are SkyBus, taxis, rideshare and pre-booked cars.
How much is a taxi from Melbourne Airport to the city?
Taxis from the rank use the meter, and tolls are extra if the driver uses CityLink. The final amount depends on traffic and route. Our fixed fare is shown in the booker for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay.
Where do I get picked up at Melbourne Airport?
Taxi and rideshare pick-up are unchanged and there are free pick-up zones on Level 2 of the T123 Transport Hub for Terminals 1, 2 and 3. Pre-arranged chauffeurs meet you at the chauffeur meeting points inside the airport.
Do I need to pay a toll to drive from the airport to the CBD?
The fastest route, CityLink, is a toll road, and toll-free surface roads are slower. The tolling company publishes how to pay and a route-comparison tool. With a pre-booked car, the quoted fare covers the route.
Can I book a private airport transfer for six people?
Yes. A Luxury SUV carries up to six passengers with five or six large bags, and an Executive Sprinter carries up to twelve passengers and twelve bags.
What happens if my flight arrives early or late?
We track the flight. After an international landing you have 60 minutes of free waiting, and the chauffeur adjusts to the real arrival time.
Can I add a child seat?
Yes. Child, toddler and booster seats are on request at booking. Tell us the age and height.
Can I book a transfer to the Yarra Valley or Mornington Peninsula?
Yes. Give the desk your destination and times. For a full day with stops, a personal driver is usually better than a one-way transfer.
