A Dubai airport transfer starts with a good piece of news: Dubai International (DXB) is close to the city. Downtown Dubai is about 14 km (9 mi) from the terminals and Deira and the Creek are closer still. The bad news is that most visitors do not stay in Downtown. The Marina is about 33 km (20 mi) away, the Palm Jumeirah roughly 37 km (23 mi), and Dubai World Central, the second airport, about 60 km (37 mi) from DXB, according to Dubai Airports. A transfer that looks like fifteen minutes on the map becomes forty-five at the wrong hour.
This guide covers how to leave DXB from Terminal 1, Terminal 2 or Terminal 3, how the metro, taxi and booked car compare, and when a private car is worth it. If a booked car is the answer, the booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay.
What is the best airport transfer from DXB to your hotel?
For a hotel in Downtown, Business Bay or along the Red Line, the metro or an airport taxi is quick and sensible. For the Marina, the Palm, a family, heavy bags or a late landing, a booked private car is usually the better transfer: fixed fare, a driver with a name board, no queue.
That sentence hides a real decision tree. Dubai's public transport is clean and works well on the Red Line corridor, and the airport's taxi ranks run around the clock. The case for a booked car is not that the alternatives are poor. It is that the last mile in Dubai is often a long one, and that arrivals at 02:00 with two children are a different problem from a solo trip at noon. The sections below show each case with numbers.
DXB at a glance: three terminals, one busy airport
DXB has three terminals, and which one you arrive at decides your pickup instructions.
- Terminal 1 serves many international airlines through its D Gates, reached from the main building by a short airport train ride, according to Dubai Airports. The airline directory lists carriers such as British Airways, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines and Air India here.
- Terminal 2 serves regional and international flights through its F Gates and is used by about 21 airlines in the airport's fact file, including flydubai services.
- Terminal 3 is the Emirates terminal. The airline says all its flights arrive and depart from Terminal 3. Its three concourses (A, B and C) also host flydubai, United and Air Canada in the airport's airline directory.
Your terminal depends on your airline, and the directory changes, so check it on the Dubai Airports website before you fly. Canadians flying nonstop from Toronto or Montreal on Emirates land in Terminal 3. Our booking form asks for your flight number, and the confirmation names the terminal.
DXB to your hotel: the main distances and drive times
These are typical road distances and off-peak times. Peak times are longer; see the section on Dubai's roads below.
- Deira and Dubai Creek: about 5 to 10 km, 10 to 20 minutes.
- Downtown Dubai and Dubai Mall: about 14 km (9 mi), 16 to 25 minutes.
- DIFC and Business Bay: about 12 to 16 km, 15 to 25 minutes.

Dubai airport transfer options compared
| Mode | Door-to-door time to Downtown | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dubai Metro, Red Line (Terminals 1 and 3) | About 35–50 min including walking and a change if needed | Fare on a Nol card, set by the transport authority | Airport advises two pieces including hand luggage | Solo travellers on the Red Line corridor with light bags |
| Airport taxi (Dubai Taxi, ranks at every terminal) | 20–35 min | Metered; the airport lists an AED 25 starting fare (2026) | 2–3 bags in a saloon | Spontaneous trips, small parties |
| Ride-hailing (Uber, Careem, Bolt per the airport) | 20–40 min plus wait | Surge-priced; shown in the app | Vehicle-dependent | Flexible plans, local app users |
| RTA bus from the arrivals stands | 45–75 min | Fare on a Nol card | Limited | Travellers with time and a bus route to their area |
| Private transfer booked with Onroutz.ca | 20–35 min after a short meet-up | Fixed fare via booker | Sedan 2 large + 2 cabin; SUV 5–6 large; Sprinter 12 | Marina and Palm hotels, families, groups, late arrivals |
Sources for the table are the airport operator's metro and taxi pages. The airport says the Red Line connects to Terminals 1 and 3 only, and that buses leave from dedicated stands at arrivals in all three terminals.
When the metro or taxi is the better choice
The Red Line is the best-value route to Dubai if you stay near it, and the airport's taxi ranks are straightforward. We would take the metro if:
- you land between mid-morning and late evening, when it runs;
- your hotel is within a short walk of a Red Line station or a single change;
- you carry one bag; and
- you are travelling alone.
Metro hours listed by the airport are Monday to Thursday 5 AM to midnight, Friday 5 AM to 1 AM, Saturday 5 AM to midnight and Sunday 8 AM to midnight, extended on holidays. An airport taxi is a good second choice: the rank is at your terminal, the meter runs and no booking is needed. Check the fare against the route before you leave and ask for the receipt.
When a private Dubai airport transfer is the better choice
Dubai's strength as a hub is its range of hotels in places the metro does not reach. A private car wins when:
- Your hotel is on the Palm or in the Marina. The Palm Jumeirah is not on the metro, and the Marina, though on the Red Line, is a long ride with luggage.
- You land after midnight or before dawn. The metro is closed for part of that window.
- You arrive as a family. A Luxury SUV seats up to 6 with 5–6 large bags; an Executive Sprinter seats up to 12 with 12 bags. Seats for babies, toddlers and older children are provided when requested at booking.
- Your party has a meeting an hour after landing. The driver tracks your flight, so a delayed arrival changes the pickup, not the plan.
- You want a fixed fare. The booker shows the all-in fare before you pay, and tolls are included.
- You are transferring from a long flight. The 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing covers immigration at a busy hour.
Terminal pickup: where we meet you at DXB
At DXB the airport operator publishes its own meeting options. The marhaba service offers meet-and-greet and chauffeur transfers with meeting points at Terminal 1 Arrivals and Terminal 3 Arrivals, and a Greet & Go point operates in Terminal 3 Arrivals for guests connecting with their transport provider. Details are on the marhaba page.
With Onroutz.ca the practical steps are simple:
- Enter your flight number; we confirm the terminal and the meeting point in the confirmation.
- After landing, clear immigration and collect bags.
- Your driver meets you in arrivals with a name board on request. An alias on the board keeps your name private.
- The driver takes you to the car and handles the bags.
If you want a faster passport path, a paid Dubai airport meet and greet can be added to the booking. For a more private arrival, the Dubai luxury airport transfer page covers First Class Sedan and ultra-luxury cars on request.
Dubai's roads: Salik, rush hour and weekends
Most DXB journeys use Sheikh Zayed Road (E11) or the Al Khail and Emirates road corridors, and several cross a Salik toll gate. Salik is Dubai's electronic toll and the gates charge per crossing, with rates that vary by time of day, so a longer drive through several gates adds up. Our fixed fare includes the tolls. You pay nothing at the gate and carry no toll tag.
Traffic builds on weekday mornings and again from mid-afternoon. Friday and Saturday evenings near malls and the beach can be slow. If you have a dinner reservation or a flight to catch from your hotel, the pickup time you choose, rather than the taxi you can find, controls your arrival. Allow an extra margin to and from Downtown at the evening peak.
Entry and travel advice
Canadian passport holders receive a free tourist visa on arrival valid for 90 days within a 180-day period, and a passport needs to be valid for six months beyond arrival, according to the Government of Canada's advice. That page, last updated in August 2026, advises Canadians to avoid non-essential travel to the UAE because of the regional security situation. Airlines have also changed and suspended Gulf schedules during 2026. We do not give security assessments. Check your government's page and your airline before you book, and use our flight tracking to cover the changes that are routine.
From DXB onward: Abu Dhabi, hourly cars and events
DXB is the start of many longer journeys. For Abu Dhabi, the intercity runs are Dubai Airport to Abu Dhabi and the reverse. For a day of meetings or sightseeing, a car with driver in Dubai is booked by the hour. Back at the Middle East hub you will find Doha, Riyadh and the Hajj corridor. All our airport transfers share the same service standard: flight tracking, a 24/7 desk and the fixed fare shown first.
Booking, vehicles and cancellation
In Dubai the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner, and the Toronto desk books, confirms, supports and invoices it. Every partner car is within four model years of new, except Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach, allowed up to seven. Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar) takes up to 3; First Class Sedan (S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar) takes up to 3; Luxury SUV takes up to 6; Executive Sprinter takes up to 12. See the fleet and the FAQ.
Cancellation is counted from the scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours' notice, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10%; 48 hours or less, 50%; 24 hours or less or no-show, 100%.
Frequently asked questions
Is it easy to get a taxi at Dubai Airport?
Yes. Dubai Taxi runs from designated ranks at every terminal around the clock, and the airport lists a starting fare of AED 25 plus distance charges. Queues grow after large arrivals banks, and a booked car avoids the wait and the guesswork.
How can I book hotel transfers in Dubai?
Enter your flight, hotel and passenger count in the booker. You see the fixed all-in fare before you pay. A local partner drives, and the desk in Toronto confirms and supports the trip. See Dubai hotel transfers for district guidance.
How far is Dubai Airport from Downtown and the Marina?
Downtown is about 14 km from DXB, usually 16 to 25 minutes. The Marina is about 33 km, 25 to 45 minutes. Add time at the evening peak.
Which terminal do I arrive at in Dubai?
It depends on your airline. Emirates uses Terminal 3. Many international airlines use Terminal 1, and some regional carriers and flydubai services use Terminal 2. Check the airport's airline directory, and your booking confirmation will state the meeting point.
How do I get from Terminal 3 to Terminal 1?
The Red Line serves both terminals, and the airport also runs terminal transfers. They are separate buildings, so do not plan to walk with bags. If you have a driver booked, tell us which terminal you actually land in and the pickup follows.
Is the Dubai Metro worth it from the airport?
For a single traveller going to a Red Line stop, yes. For a family, a late arrival or a hotel off the line, a taxi or booked car is easier. The airport advises no more than two pieces of luggage including hand luggage on the metro.
Can you meet me inside arrivals?
Yes. A name-board meet and greet inside arrivals is available on request, with an alias on the board if you prefer. Flight tracking is included, and we allow 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing.
Are tolls included in the fare?
Yes. The fixed fare quoted before you pay is all-in, so Salik toll charges on the route are not a separate bill.
What if my flight is delayed or rescheduled?
We track the flight and move the pickup. If the airline reschedules the whole flight, tell the desk. The cancellation terms are counted from the scheduled pickup, and big events may carry a different deadline printed on the confirmation.
