Cruise-port transfer

Seattle Airport (SEA) to the Seattle Cruise Port: Private Transfers to Pier 66 and Pier 91

Sea-Tac to the Seattle piers takes about 35 minutes by road. The harder questions are which terminal you sail from, how the light rail fits, and what to do with a big Alaska-cruise suitcase.

How do I get from Seattle airport to the Seattle cruise port?

Seattle-Tacoma International (SEA) is about 23 km (14 mi) from Pier 66 and about 25 km (15 mi) from Pier 91. The Port of Seattle says the trip is about 35 minutes. Link light rail reaches downtown, but a car or taxi is needed for Pier 91 and is easier for luggage.

Seattle is the big gateway for Alaska cruises, and it has an unusual advantage over most cruise cities: the airport is close. The Port of Seattle describes the trip from the airport to the hotels and cruise terminals as just 35 minutes, and for once the number is honest. What goes wrong at Seattle is not distance; it is picking the wrong terminal, trusting an app to find a quiet curb at a busy pier, or underestimating how many people leave Sea-Tac for the water on the same Saturday.

This page walks through the two terminals, the road and rail options from the airport, a mode-by-mode comparison, and the return trip on disembarkation day. When you are ready, the booker will price a fixed fare from your flight number to your ship.

The two Seattle cruise terminals: Pier 66 and Pier 91

The Port of Seattle operates two cruise terminals, and your cruise line decides which one you use.

TerminalLocationCharacter
Bell Street Cruise Terminal (Pier 66)Downtown waterfront, Alaskan WayWalkable from hotels, the waterfront and Pike Place Market
Smith Cove Cruise Terminal (Pier 91)North of downtown, near Magnolia and InterbayReached by road, not by light rail

Pier 66 is on Alaskan Way at the foot of Bell Street, within a short distance of downtown hotels, and Pier 91 is on West Garfield Street in the Smith Cove area. The port lists each terminal on its cruise page, together with terminal manager contacts and a "Find My Ship and Terminal" tool, and publishes the annual cruise schedule. The same page notes that the season runs from April through October. A separate port page describes the airport as 35 minutes from hotels and cruise terminals and mentions a complimentary luggage service available at the end of the cruise (Port of Seattle cruise passenger information).

Do not assume. Look up your ship, because the same line can use different terminals on different dates, and confirm before the driver is dispatched. If the terminal changes, tell the desk and the booking is updated.

Distances and drive times from Sea-Tac

RouteDistanceTypical driveWeekday peak

Sea-Tac to Pier 91 (Smith Cove)about 25 km / 15 mi25 – 35 min45 – 60 min
Sea-Tac to downtown Seattle hotelsabout 22 km / 14 mi25 – 35 min45 – 60 min
Pier 66 to Pier 91about 6 km / 4 mi12 – 20 min25 – 35 min

The route is I-5 north into downtown, or SR 99 through the tunnel, and both are affected by the same bottlenecks: the southbound approach near the stadiums on event days, and the weekday afternoon northbound crawl. A Saturday-morning embarkation, which is a common sailing day for Alaska, often has lighter commuter traffic but heavier cruise traffic. The SR 99 tunnel is a toll road, and a fixed fare through Onroutz.ca covers whichever road the chauffeur uses.

Sound Transit's 1 Line runs from the airport station to Westlake in downtown. The published schedule at Westlake shows trains from about 5:03 a.m. to 12:33 a.m., roughly every 8 minutes in the morning peak, every 10 midday and every 12 to 16 in late evening (Sound Transit 1 Line). From Westlake to Pier 66 is a walk of about a kilometre downhill, with an uphill return, which is unkind with a suitcase. Pier 91 is not on the rail line.

When the train is the better choice: you are a solo traveller or couple with one bag each, you are sailing from Pier 66, and you do not mind the walk. It is dependable at rush hour because it avoids I-5. When the private car wins: three or more people, any heavy cruise luggage, children, a Pier 91 sailing, a late flight when trains are sparse, or a tight check-in window. For cruise luggage the car also saves a transfer: it goes from curb at Sea-Tac to curb at the pier.

Embarkation day logistics at Seattle

The Port of Seattle leaves boarding times to the cruise lines, so the schedule in your documents is the authority. A few practical rules apply on almost every Alaska sailing:

  • Arrive within your assigned window. Your line sets it, and arriving far ahead rarely helps.
  • Drop off luggage with porters. Bags are tagged and sent to the stateroom, which is the biggest reason a drop-off at the terminal door matters.
  • Do not plan a same-morning flight. If you are flying in, the best arrival is the day before, and Seattle has plenty of downtown hotels near Pier 66.
  • Avoid the stadium effect. If a baseball, football or soccer game coincides with your sailing, traffic around the SoDo corridor is worse. Your chauffeur will know.

The flight tracking built into every Onroutz.ca airport pickup helps here: the car adjusts to the actual landing, you have 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing and 30 after a domestic one, and the 24/7 desk can help if the ship sails earlier than you think. For international flights through Seattle, a meet and greet inside arrivals is available on request.

A day in Seattle before you sail

Arriving the day before turns a stressful transfer into a short, calm one. Downtown hotels sit within a few minutes of Pier 66, and the waterfront, Pike Place Market and the ferry dock are all nearby. If you stay near the airport instead, you gain cheaper rooms but add a second transfer on sailing morning. A private car can do both legs, airport to hotel the evening before and hotel to pier the next morning, on one booking with two named pickups.

Alaska packing is part of the logistics. Layers, rain gear and sometimes formal-night clothing add up, and a family of four easily reaches six large bags. Tell the booker the bag count, not just the passenger count, so the right vehicle is assigned. A Luxury SUV takes five to six large bags with six passengers; an Executive Sprinter takes 12 bags with 12 passengers.

The return trip: disembarkation to Sea-Tac

On disembarkation morning your cruise line sets your time. The port also lists a complimentary Port Valet luggage transfer service, run by Bags Inc., for the end of the cruise; ask your line how it works. Book your car for the time your line assigns plus a realistic buffer for customs, and never book a flight before you know your disembarkation group.

For a flight in the afternoon, you may have time for a downtown lunch before the airport. A chauffeur can handle that as a short stop on the same booking, and multi-leg itineraries go on one reservation.

Seattle and the Canadian traveller

Some Alaska passengers are Canadians who fly into Seattle or drive across the border. If you are connecting from Vancouver, see the Vancouver airport transfer page and the Canada hub; Onroutz.ca is based in Toronto and handles the booking in Canadian terms, with the Seattle ride delivered by a local partner. Cruises sailing from Seattle that call at Canadian ports have their own documentation rules, which your cruise line will explain.

How the service works in Seattle

Onroutz.ca books from a desk in Toronto. In Seattle, a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local partner with a US-licensed chauffeur drives the car; the Toronto desk books, confirms, supports and invoices the trip, so there is one confirmation, one invoice and a 24/7 contact. Partner vehicles are no more than four model years old. Child, toddler and booster seats are available on request at booking, and water and phone charging are provided in most vehicles. See how private airport transfers work and the fleet page for more.

Cancellation

If plans change: more than 72 hours' notice, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10%; 48 hours or less, 50%; 24 hours or less or no-show, 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup. See the FAQ for further rules.

Frequently asked questions

How far is the Seattle cruise port from Sea-Tac airport?

Pier 66 is about 23 km (14 mi) and Pier 91 about 25 km (15 mi). The Port of Seattle says the trip from the airport to hotels and cruise terminals takes about 35 minutes. At weekday rush hour allow 45 to 60 minutes.

Which Seattle cruise terminal is mine?

It depends on your ship and date. The Port of Seattle operates Bell Street (Pier 66) and Smith Cove (Pier 91), and its Find My Ship and Terminal tool shows which one applies. Confirm it before your chauffeur is dispatched.

Can I take the light rail from Sea-Tac to the cruise port?

For Pier 66, partly. Sound Transit's 1 Line takes you to Westlake, then you walk or take a short car ride downhill to the pier. Pier 91 is not on the rail line. With luggage, a car is easier.

How much is an Uber from Sea-Tac to the Seattle cruise terminal?

Rideshare is app-priced and surges when many cruise passengers leave the airport at the same time, so there is no stable figure. The Onroutz.ca booker shows a fixed all-in fare before you pay.

What is the Seattle cruise season?

The Port of Seattle describes the season as running April through October, mostly Alaska sailings. Use the port's published cruise schedule to see the date and terminal for your ship.

Is there a luggage service at Seattle's cruise terminals?

The port lists a complimentary Port Valet luggage transfer service, run by Bags Inc., for the end of a cruise. At embarkation, porters take your luggage at the terminal; a drop-off at the door makes that easy.

Can I get a car service from Seattle airport to Pier 91?

Yes. Pier 91 is reached by road, so a private car or taxi is the practical choice. Book with your flight number and ship, and tell the desk if your terminal changes.

Are airport limousines worth the expense?

For a family with cruise luggage, a late flight or a fixed embarkation window, often yes. For one traveller with one bag arriving at midday to Pier 66, the light rail is a sensible alternative.
