Riyadh is a city built for the car. Distances are long, the districts are spread over a wide plain, and the airport sits well to the north. King Khalid International Airport (RUH) is about 35 km (22 mi) from central Riyadh, so a Riyadh airport transfer is a real drive of 25 to 45 minutes in normal traffic and longer at the evening peak. For visitors on business, the first hour after landing often decides how the rest of the day goes.
This page explains the terminal layout, the options for reaching the city (a new metro line, taxis and app-based rides, and a booked private car), what to expect on entry, and when a private transfer is the better call. The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay.
What is the best airport transfer from Riyadh King Khalid?
For business arrivals, hotels spread across Riyadh, or any late landing, a booked private car is the most reliable airport transfer: about 35 km, 25 to 45 minutes, a driver in arrivals with a name board and a fixed fare. The Riyadh Metro's Line 4 now serves the airport terminals for travellers who prefer the train.
The metro is new, and it is a real option. It is best for a light-packed solo traveller whose destination is close to a station on the network. The reasons to choose a car are the same everywhere in Riyadh: the city is large, the first meeting is often not near a station, and the driver's knowledge of the entrance matters more than the speed of the line.
King Khalid International at a glance
RUH has five terminals, and the terminal depends on the airline. At the time of writing the layout is:
- Terminal 1: international flights of the low-cost carriers flynas and flyadeal.
- Terminal 2: international flights of Saudia and Riyadh Air.
- Terminal 3: domestic flights of flynas, flyadeal and Riyadh Air.
- Terminal 4: domestic flights of Saudia.
- Terminal 5: opened in 2016 and used by foreign carriers for international flights.
Most travellers from Canada, the UK, Europe and Asia on foreign airlines arrive at Terminal 5. Terminal assignments change, so check your airline's page, and our booking confirmation names the terminal and meeting point for your flight number. The airport operator, Riyadh Airports, operates the airport; its company site is riyadhairports.com.
The airport is on the northern edge of the city, so the drive into central Riyadh follows highways on the north side.
How far is Riyadh Airport from your destination?
Distances are approximate road distances; Riyadh's traffic can change them substantially.
- KAFD (King Abdullah Financial District): about 25 to 30 km, 25 to 40 minutes.
- Olaya, Kingdom Centre and the central business corridor: about 35 km, 30 to 50 minutes.
- Al Malqa, Al Yasmin and the northern suburbs: about 15 to 25 km, 20 to 35 minutes.
- The Diplomatic Quarter: about 45 to 50 km, 40 to 60 minutes.
- Diriyah: about 40 to 45 km, 35 to 55 minutes.
- Riyadh Boulevard and entertainment districts: about 35 to 45 km, 35 to 60 minutes, longer on event nights.
These ranges are wider than for most cities. Riyadh's rush hours are heavy. If you are going to a meeting, build in 20 minutes of margin.

Riyadh Metro Line 4 opened on 1 December 2024 and serves three stations at the airport: Airport T1–2, Airport T3–4 and Airport T5. It runs to KAFD, which is the interchange with the other lines. Operating hours and fares are set by the metro operator and published in its app, so check them before you travel. Arrangements for airport taxis have changed over the years, and different guides describe metered fares and posted zone fares, so ask for the fare method before you get in, or book ahead for a fixed fare.
When the metro or a taxi is the better choice
We would use the metro if you are travelling alone with one case, your hotel or office is close to a station on the network, and you land in the middle of the day. Line 4 is the cleanest way to reach KAFD in rush hour, and it avoids the road entirely.
We would use an airport taxi if you have no fixed plan, land at a quiet hour, and are willing to agree the fare method with the driver. Riyadh's ride-hailing apps are also widely used by residents, and you can compare the in-app price before you accept.
When a private car is the better choice
A booked car is the better choice for the majority of visiting business travellers and for families:
- Your hotel or office is not at a station. Riyadh's key addresses, from Olaya hotels to Diriyah resorts, are scattered, and the last mile on foot or by taxi is a long one.
- Three or more travellers. A Luxury SUV seats up to 6 with 5–6 large bags; an Executive Sprinter seats up to 12 with 12 bags.
- You land late or early. The pickup is booked against your flight, with flight tracking on every airport pickup.
- A meeting soon after landing. A fixed fare and a named driver make the first hour predictable.
- Children. Infant, toddler and booster seats are supplied when you ask for them at booking.
- Privacy. A name-board pickup with an alias is available on request, and A chauffeur will not photograph you or mention your trip online, and NDAs can be signed on request.
Pickup at King Khalid: where we meet you
Every airport pickup includes flight tracking. The driver waits inside arrivals with a name board on request, and we allow 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing and 30 after a domestic one. International arrivals at Riyadh can involve a long immigration queue, so the longer window is well suited to the airport. The meeting point and terminal are in your confirmation.
If you arrive on a foreign airline at Terminal 5, tell us the flight number so the desk can pass the correct terminal to the partner. If you connect from a domestic flight, the pickup moves with the second flight when tracked. For escort through the terminal, arrange it with the airport's own services and tell us, so the driver is ready when you clear.
Entry rules, conduct and travel advice
The Government of Canada states that a tourist visa is required for Saudi Arabia. You can apply online before your trip or on arrival. It allows multiple entries, is valid for one year and permits up to 90 days' stay per year, and a passport must be valid for six months from entry. See the Government of Canada's Saudi Arabia page, which was updated on 8 October 2026 and advises avoiding non-essential travel to Saudi Arabia because of the regional security situation. Airlines have also changed schedules in the Gulf during 2026, so confirm your flight with the airline.
The same page says to dress conservatively, with shoulders and knees covered for everyone, and with arms and legs covered for women in general. Avoid public displays of affection, be discreet about eating, drinking and smoking in public during daylight hours in Ramadan, which is expected to begin around 7 February 2027, and note that photographing government buildings and military sites is prohibited. Nationals of other countries may find that the visa process differs, so check the official Saudi eVisa portal for your passport.
We do not give security assessments. Read your own government's advice before you book.
Riyadh in a wider trip
Many Saudi itineraries link Riyadh with the western region. The Kingdom's pilgrim corridor is covered in Jeddah Airport to Makkah and Madinah to Jeddah Airport; non-Muslims may not enter Makkah. For other Gulf stops, see Dubai airport transfer from DXB, Doha Hamad airport transfer and Abu Dhabi Zayed airport transfer. The Middle East hub lists the whole region, and the airport transfers hub lists every gateway. Multi-leg itineraries sit on one booking with one confirmation, one invoice and a 24/7 contact. Hourly cars and corporate accounts with monthly invoicing can be arranged; ask the desk.
Planning the first day in Riyadh
Because distances are long, the first day is easiest when the transfer is the only moving part. Send the desk the full name and address of the hotel or office, the building entrance if you know it, and the time of your first meeting. The pickup time can then be worked back from the meeting, with the airport's immigration queue and the highway traffic both allowed for. If you are a first-time visitor, ask the hotel which entrance suits a car, because large hotels and towers often have separate entrances for guests, residences and offices. For a day of meetings, request an hourly car so the same driver stays with you, and if your schedule changes, message the desk rather than the partner so that one record of your plans is kept.
Booking, vehicles and cancellation
In Saudi Arabia the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner, and the Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto books, confirms, supports and invoices it. Partner cars are at most four model years old, or seven for Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach. Onroutz.ca is a transport service and not a security company: there are no armed drivers or bodyguards, and the driver works alongside a client's own security team. See the fleet for classes and capacity.
Cancellation is counted from the scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours' notice, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10%; 48 hours or less, 50%; 24 hours or less or no-show, 100%. A convention or big event may come with a different cancellation window, shown on your confirmation. Read the FAQ for the rest.
