How far is Aruba's airport from the hotels?

For an Aruba airport transfer, Queen Beatrix International Airport (AUA) is on the island's west side, close to Oranjestad. Most hotels are 10 to 25 minutes away by car: the Eagle Beach resorts are the nearer group, the Palm Beach high-rises sit further along the coast, and Oranjestad downtown is the closest of all.

Aruba is a small island, about 32 km long and 9 km wide, with a single main tourist coast on its southwest side. The airport, the capital and the main hotel strips lie within a short run of one another. That sounds like a trivial transfer, and in terms of distance it is. The things that make a difference are the lines at immigration, the pickup logistics and the fact that the hotel strips are separate places with their own traffic.

The distances in the table below are approximate planning figures for a car on a normal day, not measured guarantees. Ask for the exact hotel name on your booking, because the Palm Beach strip alone has many resorts along it.

Aruba hotel areas and typical drive times

AreaCharacterTypical drive from AUA
OranjestadThe capital, cruise terminal, shops and waterfront5–15 min
Eagle BeachLow-rise resorts on a wide beach10–20 min
Palm BeachHigh-rise resorts, casinos, restaurants15–25 min

South coast, Savaneta and beyondQuieter, local feel, water sports15–35 min

Traffic is rarely severe, but the roads near Palm Beach and Oranjestad can slow in the early evening, and cruise-ship days put more vehicles and visitors around the downtown waterfront. Allow extra time for departure rather than arrival.

A traveller guide describes the airport as having no designated airport buses, with local routes passing on the highway outside. For most holiday visitors with checked bags, a taxi or a pre-booked car is the practical choice.

Aruba airport transfer: when a private car is worth booking

On a ten-minute drive, the argument for a private car is not about time on the road. It is about time everywhere else.

  1. You are travelling as a family. A Luxury SUV takes up to 6 passengers and 5–6 large bags. Note the children's ages at booking and the right infant, toddler or booster seat is provided.
  2. You land with a crowd. Several wide-body flights from North America can arrive within the same hour, and the taxi line grows. A chauffeur is at the meeting point.
  3. Your flight is late. The driver tracks the flight. Customs queues are covered by 60 minutes of free waiting after international landings (30 after domestic).
  4. You are travelling for business. A fixed fare, an invoice and a driver who waits suit corporate accounts with monthly invoicing.
  5. You are in a group. An Executive Sprinter carries up to 12 passengers and 12 bags, and mini-coaches and coaches of 20–56 seats are available on request. Availability is confirmed at booking.
  6. You want a smooth return. Aruba's airport offers US border preclearance, so departures for the United States include extra steps. A pre-set pickup time makes the plan simple.

Entry rules and the ED card

The Government of Canada's advice for Aruba sets out the essentials for Canadian citizens. Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay, and airlines may apply stricter rules. Entry requires a completed, signed Embarkation/Disembarkation card, called the ED card. The advice says you can fill it in online within 7 days before travel at the official ED card site. A visa is not required for tourist or business stays of up to 90 days in a 180-day period. Customs officials may ask for a return or onward ticket, proof of the purpose of your stay, proof of sufficient funds and proof of valid health insurance. Fees are not listed on the Government of Canada page, so confirm any cost on the official ED card site.

Read the full Government of Canada advice for Aruba before you fly, and the island's tourism authority for planning. Travellers from other countries should check their own government's advice, because rules differ.

Print or save the ED card confirmation to your phone before you leave home. A form completed on the plane or in the queue is slower.

What the arrival looks like

After landing you clear immigration, collect your bags and pass customs. Your chauffeur waits at the arranged meeting point and tracks your flight, so an early or late arrival is handled without a call. A name-board meet and greet inside arrivals is available on request, with an alias on the board for privacy.

Walk past anyone who approaches you before the exit. Your confirmation shows where the driver is. If you land with a large party, tell the desk how many flights and how many bags so the right vehicle is sent.

Palm Beach, Eagle Beach and Oranjestad: which is for you?

The three main areas feel different, and the transfer reflects it.

  • Palm Beach has the high-rise resorts, restaurants and casinos. It is the busiest part of the island, with the most evening traffic.
  • Eagle Beach has a wider beach and low-rise hotels, closer to the airport and calmer after dark.
  • Oranjestad is the capital, with the cruise terminal, harbour and downtown shops. It is the nearest of the three to the airport.

Choose your area by what you want to do with your evenings, then book the transfer to match.

Cruise guests in Oranjestad

Aruba is also a cruise port, and the cruise terminal is in Oranjestad. If you fly in to join a ship, or leave from the ship to fly home, a private car takes you between the airport and the terminal. Tell the desk the name of the ship and the sailing date, and give yourself margin for terminal formalities. For cruise stopovers elsewhere in the region, see the cruise transfers hub.

Departure day and US preclearance

For Aruba-to-US flights, preclearance means you clear US border formalities in Aruba before you fly. Traveller references describe the facility, and airlines advise arriving well ahead of departure. Plan to be at the airport at least three hours before an international departure, and tell the driver if you are flying to the United States so the pickup allows the margin.

If your hotel checkout is at midday and your flight is late, ask the resort about luggage storage, and book the car for a time that fits your plan, not the hotel's.

Weddings, honeymoons and groups

Aruba is a popular wedding and honeymoon destination. A couple wants quiet and a single driver. A wedding party of 25 needs a plan for each flight. Give the desk the flights, the party size and the hotels, and it builds one booking with several legs. The wedding guest shuttles page covers the event side.

Choosing the vehicle by luggage, not just by headcount

Aruba holidays tend to arrive with beach bags, snorkel gear, strollers and sometimes kitesurfing or windsurfing equipment. The vehicle class decides whether all of it fits in one trip.

  • Executive Sedan or First Class Sedan: up to 3 passengers, with 2 large and 2 cabin bags. Suited to couples and solo business travellers.
  • Luxury SUV: up to 6 passengers and 5–6 large bags, typically a Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar, with the model confirmed at booking.
  • Executive Sprinter: up to 12 passengers and 12 bags for families travelling together or small wedding parties.

If you are unsure, add the bags up and choose the larger class. A chauffeur can always carry less than the vehicle allows, but cannot carry more.

Getting around the island after the transfer

The transfer gets you to the hotel. After that, travellers use rental cars, taxis and local buses. Vehicles drive on the right in Aruba, as in North America, which makes a rental car easy for visitors from the United States and Canada. A traveller guide notes that rental cars are handed over in the alley behind the rental offices facing the terminal, not inside the hall, so allow time for that step if you rent.

For evenings out on Palm Beach or in Oranjestad, many guests book an hourly car and driver instead of arranging taxis at every stop. See the services hub for hourly and half-day options.

The Government of Canada's advice states that the hurricane season in the Atlantic and Caribbean runs from early June to the end of November, and that storms can develop quickly. If a storm changes your flights, contact the 24/7 desk as soon as you know, because the cancellation terms are counted from the scheduled pickup time. Keep your flight number up to date on the booking so the driver tracks the right flight.

How the service works on the island

The Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto books, confirms, supports and invoices the transfer. A vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner delivers it, in vehicles no more than four model years old. Everything sits on one booking, one confirmation and one invoice, with one desk to call at any hour. We do not own cars or offices in Aruba.

For the regional picture, see the Caribbean and Mexico hub and the resort transfers hub. Related destination guides include Punta Cana transfers and Nassau transfers. The fleet shows the vehicle classes, and the airport transfers hub lists other airports.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get from Aruba airport to the hotels?

Usually 10 to 25 minutes. Oranjestad is the closest area, Eagle Beach is next, and Palm Beach is a little further. Evening traffic near Palm Beach can add a few minutes.

What is the best way to get from the Aruba airport to my hotel?

For a family or a group, a pre-booked private car, because the chauffeur is waiting and the vehicle fits the luggage. For a couple with light bags, an airport taxi is fine. Ask the fare before you ride.

Is there a bus from Aruba airport to the hotels?

A traveller guide reports that there are no designated airport buses, though local routes pass outside on the highway. It also reports that drivers accept only backpacks and carry-on luggage. For checked bags, use a taxi or a private car.

Do I need an ED card for Aruba?

Yes. The Government of Canada states that entry requires a completed, signed Embarkation/Disembarkation card, which you can fill in online within 7 days before travel. Check the official site for the current rule and for any fee.

How much is an airport transfer in Aruba?

Taxi fares should be agreed before you ride. The booker shows a fixed all-in fare for a private car to your exact hotel before you pay. The fare depends on the hotel, the vehicle and the number of passengers.

Can I get a transfer to Oranjestad cruise terminal?

Yes. Give the ship name and the sailing date. The driver goes to the cruise terminal in Oranjestad, and the desk can plan around the ship's boarding window.

What if my flight is delayed?

The driver tracks your flight. Free waiting is 60 minutes after an international landing and 30 after a domestic one, counted from the actual landing.

What is the cancellation policy?

More than 72 hours' notice has no charge. At 72 hours or less the charge is 10 percent, at 48 hours or less it is 50 percent, and at 24 hours or less or on a no-show it is 100 percent, counted from the scheduled pickup. Some large events have a separate deadline, and you will see it on the confirmation.
