A well-planned Amsterdam airport transfer to your hotel begins with an honest fact: Schiphol (AMS) is one of the best-connected airports in Europe, and a train leaves for the city centre every few minutes. The airport is about 15 to 18 km from the canal ring, so the journey is short whichever way you go. What changes the answer is the last 500 metres. Amsterdam's canal-side hotels sit on narrow streets with little kerb space, and a platform at Centraal is a tram ride from the door. This page compares every option, says when the train wins, and explains how Onroutz.ca puts a driver at arrivals and a car at your hotel entrance. For the airport itself, see our Schiphol airport transfer page.

What is the best way to get from Schiphol to your hotel?

For a light traveller going to a hotel near a tram stop, the NS train to Amsterdam Centraal takes about 15 to 20 minutes and is hard to beat. For a family, a group, luggage, a late flight or a hotel on a canal, a pre-booked private car takes 25 to 45 minutes and stops at the entrance.

Amsterdam is compact, which makes it tempting to assume the transfer is simple. For many travellers it is. The trouble starts with a four-person group landing at midnight with checked bags, or a business guest who wants to arrive at the Museum Quarter ready for a meeting. Those are the cases where one vehicle, one driver and no transfers are worth the fare.

How far is each Amsterdam hotel district from Schiphol?

Distances are rounded road figures from the terminal. Times assume ordinary traffic. The A10 ring road and the approaches to the centre are slowest on weekday mornings and from mid-afternoon.

The national rail operator publishes timetables and fares on NS, and the city's public transport company, GVB, runs the trams, metro and buses once you are in town. The city tourism board describes arrival options at I amsterdam. Schiphol's own taxi page lists the official rank in front of Schiphol Plaza; the site blocks automated link checks, so we do not link it here.

Is there a free hotel shuttle from Schiphol?

Some are real, and they belong to hotels in the airport area. Properties around Schiphol and the nearby business districts commonly run a courtesy bus that collects guests at a set stop. Those are not the hotels on this page. For the canal ring and the Museum Quarter, we do not know of an airport shuttle that central Amsterdam hotels operate, so ask yours. If a hotel offers a paid car, compare it with our fixed fare before you commit.

When the train is the better choice

Take the NS train when you land with one bag, your hotel is near Centraal or a tram stop, and the hour is between the early morning and the late evening. It runs several times an hour, the station is directly beneath the terminal building, and traffic cannot slow it. The ride to Amsterdam Centraal takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes.

Take bus 397 when your hotel is in the Museum Quarter or Zuid, because it runs from the airport to stops near Museumplein in roughly 30 minutes. It does not go to Centraal.

We would rather you took the train on a bright morning with a rucksack than book a car you do not need. The case for the private transfer follows.

When a private car wins

  • Three or more travellers. A single car covers everyone, with no split across tickets.
  • Luggage. Trams are tight with large cases, and canal-side pavements are narrow and cobbled.
  • Late or early flights. Your flight is tracked, so a delayed landing still ends with a person at arrivals.
  • Children. Child, toddler and booster seats can be added at booking.
  • A hotel on a canal. The driver knows where the car can stop and tells you before you arrive.
  • Business schedules. A meeting at 10:00 after a 06:30 landing leaves no room for a missed train.
  • Privacy. A quiet car, and an alias on the name board if you prefer.

Browse the fleet to compare vehicle classes, or open how private airport transfers work before a first booking. The private transfer page explains what is included.

Canal ring hotels: how cars reach Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht

The canal ring is a UNESCO-listed system of 17th-century canals, and it was laid out for boats and horse carts, not vehicles. Streets run along the water on one or both sides, are often cobbled and narrow, and many are one-way or have traffic rules that a satellite-navigation app does not always show. Bridges and quay walls limit the heaviest vehicles in places, and cyclists and trams share the same space.

What this means in practice:

  • The car reaches the hotel. A sedan or SUV can normally pull up at the entrance of a canal hotel, which is the point of booking a car. Your driver is given the hotel name and street number and plans the approach from the booking.
  • Stops are short. There is rarely a lay-by. The driver stops at the entrance, unloads the bags and moves on, so have the passengers ready to step out.
  • When the street is blocked. Deliveries, refuse trucks and tour boats on the water can occupy the street. If so, the driver uses the nearest legal stop on a neighbouring street and walks you and your bags to the door, or the hotel sends a porter.
  • Group vehicles. A Sprinter or mini-coach is sometimes better placed at a wider street nearby, with a short walk. Tell us the number of people and bags at booking and we will say which vehicle suits the address.
  • Time of day. Mornings and late afternoons are slower than midday; the ring road to the city is the heavier part of the trip.

Museum Quarter hotels: Museumplein, Paulus Potterstraat and Vondelpark

The Museum Quarter, also called Oud-Zuid, is wider and more open than the canal ring. Streets near Museumplein have more room for a car to stop, but they are busy: coaches stop for the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Concertgebouw, trams pass along the main routes, and cyclists are everywhere. The fastest public link is bus 397, which stops near Museumplein in about 30 minutes, so a light traveller can reach the area from Schiphol without changing.

For a car, the plan is simple. The driver approaches by the main road network, stops at the hotel entrance on its own street and unloads the bags. If coaches are queuing at the kerb, the Museumplein side or a neighbouring street is the fallback, a short walk from the door. Museum days and school holidays are the slowest. If you are staying in the Museum Quarter and arrive by train at Centraal, a tram or a short car ride completes the journey; ask us about adding a station pickup to the same booking.

Arrival logistics at Schiphol

Schiphol has a single large terminal building with arrivals halls. You give us a flight number and we set the pickup from it. The flight is followed from take-off, so a landing ahead of or behind schedule shifts the pickup.

If you ask for it, the driver stands inside arrivals holding a board with your name, or a made-up alias when privacy matters. After an international landing there are 60 minutes of free waiting; after a domestic landing, 30. That covers passport control and the carousel. Bags go into the car at the terminal and the driver takes you to the hotel entrance or the nearest legal stop.

Beware of touts at the airport

Taxi drivers' groups and the press have long reported people approaching arriving passengers inside the terminal and offering rides. A legitimate transfer is booked in advance, with a named driver and a confirmed fare. If you are not meeting a booked driver, use the official rank outside Schiphol Plaza and look for the meter.

Luggage, families and groups

An Executive Sedan takes up to three passengers with two large and two cabin bags. A Luxury SUV seats up to six with five to six large bags, which suits a family of five. An Executive Sprinter takes up to 12 passengers and 12 bags, and mini-coaches and coaches of 20 to 56 seats are available on request. For group arrivals and wedding parties, the Sprinter van with driver page explains the approach, and the corporate meetings guide covers conference arrivals.

Cruise terminal, rail and onward trips

Amsterdam's cruise terminal sits close to the city centre, and many passengers fly in the day before. A multi-leg booking can cover airport, hotel and port on one confirmation; see cruise transfers and confirm the terminal with your cruise line. If you are heading on by train, the rail transfers hub lists the station pages we have, and the NS train from Schiphol connects to long-distance services.

Night, early morning and delayed flights

Schiphol is busy at night, and public transport thins out after the last trains. A pre-booked car is the dependable choice for a late landing. If the flight is badly delayed or rebooked, tell the 24/7 desk and the pickup moves. Early departures work the other way: a 07:00 flight means leaving the centre at about 04:30, when the road is clear.

VIP, discreet and high-profile arrivals

Chauffeurs never photograph guests or post about a trip, and we can sign an NDA if you ask. Onroutz.ca is not a security firm and provides no armed drivers or bodyguards; a client's own protection team can work alongside the car. For arrivals that call for more care, see VIP transportation and meet and greet.

How the Amsterdam transfer works with Onroutz.ca

Onroutz.ca is a transfer desk based in Toronto. In the Netherlands, the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner, and Onroutz.ca books, confirms, supports and invoices it from Toronto: one booking, one confirmation, one invoice, one 24/7 contact. Partner vehicles are no more than four model years old, up to seven for Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach. We do not own cars or offices in the Netherlands.

Entry rules before you land

The Netherlands is in the Schengen Area. The EU is phasing in its Entry/Exit System at external borders and plans a travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors; the current status is at travel-europe.europa.eu. Check what your passport requires before departure. Time lost at passport control is covered by the free waiting allowance.

Pair this with the rest of your trip

Amsterdam pairs naturally with Paris; see the Paris airport-to-hotel transfer. Browse the Europe hub for other cities, and hotel transfers for every hotel guide. For the broader comparison of cars, taxis and apps, read airport transfer versus taxi versus rideshare, and for multi-city trips, the travel desk can sequence the legs.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get from Schiphol to central Amsterdam?

By train about 15 to 20 minutes to Amsterdam Centraal. By road 25 to 45 minutes to the canal ring, depending on traffic. Bus 397 takes roughly 30 minutes to stops near Museumplein.

Is there a free hotel shuttle from Schiphol airport?

Free shuttles belong to hotels in the airport area. As far as we know, central Amsterdam hotels, including the three on this page, do not run one, so ask your hotel. A pre-booked car shows its fixed fare in the booker before you pay.

How much is a taxi from Schiphol to the city centre?

Taxis at the official rank are metered, so the total depends on the destination and the traffic. We do not quote another operator's price. Our private fare is fixed and shown in the booker for your pickup, drop-off and vehicle.

What is the cheapest way from Schiphol to my hotel?

The NS train and bus 397 are the lowest-cost routes, and their operators set the fares. A private car is a fixed-fare service quoted before you book, and it makes sense for three or more people, heavy luggage, children or late arrivals.

Can the driver wait if my flight is delayed?

Yes. The free waiting clock starts at actual landing: 60 minutes after an international arrival and 30 after a domestic one. If the flight is rebooked, tell the 24/7 desk and the pickup moves.

Can you provide a child seat?

Request a child, toddler or booster seat when you book and include the child's age and weight. Seats have to be prepared before the car leaves, not at the kerb.

What is your cancellation policy?

More than 72 hours' notice: no charge. 72 hours or less: 10%. 48 hours or less: 50%. 24 hours or less, or a no-show: 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup. Peak events occasionally use a different cut-off, which is stated on the confirmation.
