Montego Bay's Sangster International Airport (MBJ) is the main gateway to Jamaica's north and west coasts, and the drive from it can be 10 minutes or two hours, depending on the resort. Onroutz.ca arranges private Montego Bay airport transportation to any of them: a licensed driver at arrivals, a vehicle sized for your group and a fixed fare shown before you pay. This page covers how arrival works, distances to Rose Hall, Falmouth, Negril and Ocho Rios, the practical guidance from Jamaica's tourist board and Canada's government, and the points that matter after Hurricane Melissa.

How does Montego Bay airport transportation work?

You book online with your flight number and resort name. The Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto confirms the booking and assigns a vetted, licensed, commercially insured local transfer partner. The driver tracks your flight, meets you at arrivals with a name board and takes you straight to the resort for the fare you were quoted.

In Jamaica the ride is delivered by a local partner, and the Toronto desk stays accountable for it: One booking and one invoice cover it, and the same 24/7 desk answers every question. Local partner cars and vans are four model years old at most. After you book, the confirmation shows the pickup instructions and the driver's name once assigned, and if your flight changes, tracking moves the pickup with it. Waiting time is 60 minutes after an international landing, 30 after a domestic one.

Many Jamaican resorts run their own airport service or contract a destination company, and those are a real option when your package includes them. Where a private transfer helps is when you are staying at a villa or small hotel, when your group is large, when you want to avoid a shared van that stops at six hotels, or when your resort's transfer does not match your flight.

Check this first: Montego Bay after Hurricane Melissa

Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica in late October 2025. Sangster International reopened for limited commercial flights from 1 November 2025, and repairs to the terminal have continued since. Many resorts reopened between December 2025 and mid-2026, while some Montego Bay properties were still scheduled to reopen later in 2026. Confirm your hotel is open and receiving guests before you book the ride, and check your airline for the current schedule.

The UK government's travel advice for Jamaica has noted that western parishes suffered significant damage, with some communities still lacking electricity and piped water at the time of writing, so conditions vary by neighbourhood. That does not make the trip a poor idea, but it does make a quick call to your hotel sensible, particularly if you are staying outside a major resort. If your hotel's status changes, tell the desk before the pickup, and within the cancellation terms we move the booking instead of cancelling it.

Sangster International Airport (MBJ): what arrival looks like

The airport sits about 4.8 km (3 miles) east of Montego Bay in St. James parish, and Jamaica's tourist board calls it the most convenient port of entry for trips to Ocho Rios or Negril. After Customs, arriving passengers enter a Ground Transportation Arrivals Hall where hotel lounges, transfer operators and tour companies have desks. The airport operator, MBJ Airports Limited, lists the operators and their desk numbers on its transfer and tour operators page.

Two taxi companies, JUTA and JCAL, share an authorised airport taxi desk just outside the Customs exit, according to the airport's taxi page; the page does not list fares. Porters known as Red-Caps help with luggage. If you have booked a private transfer, your driver waits with a name board where the arrivals traffic is calmest, and a name-board meet and greet inside arrivals can be requested at booking, with an alias on the board if you prefer.

Jamaica asks air and cruise arrivals to complete the free C5 declaration online. The tourist board says each traveller, including children, needs a separate form, that it can be submitted up to 30 days before travel and that you should use the official government site, enterjamaica.gov.jm, not a third-party site that charges a fee. Keep the confirmation on your phone.

Distances and drive times from the airport

Jamaica drives on the left and the north coast road, the A1, is the main artery. Use these planning figures:

  • Montego Bay Hip Strip and Doctor's Cave Beach: about 5 to 8 km (3 to 5 miles), usually 10 to 20 minutes.
  • Rose Hall and the resort strip east of the city: about 10 to 20 km (6 to 12 miles), usually 15 to 30 minutes.
  • Falmouth and Trelawny: roughly 40 km (25 miles), usually 30 to 50 minutes.
  • Negril: about 81 km (50 miles) southwest, usually 1 h 15 to 1 h 45 along the A1.
  • Ocho Rios: roughly 100 to 110 km (62 to 68 miles), commonly 1 h 30 to 2 h.

Travel times depend on traffic, because the coast road passes through the centres of Montego Bay, Lucea, Falmouth and other towns. The Government of Canada notes that police checkpoints are common along the A1 and that you may be searched, so carry identification and allow extra time. For longer drives, a pickup in daylight is easier than one after dark, and the Canadian advice is to avoid travelling at night in higher-risk areas because inland roads may have poor lighting and markings.

Montego Bay and Rose Hall

For the city-side hotels, the ride is short, and arrival-day timing is what matters. If you land at midday and your room is not ready until the afternoon, ask the hotel about luggage storage and a pool pass. The Government of Canada's advice recommends not walking alone, even in the day, and avoiding isolated beaches in higher-risk areas; resorts usually have higher police presence, but the advice is to remain careful there too. That is also an argument for a private return transfer rather than hailing an unmarked car.

Rose Hall and the strip to the east are close enough to be reached before the hotel check-in queue forms. Golf clubs and wedding luggage are common in this area; add them to the booking notes so the desk can choose an SUV or Sprinter.

Montego Bay airport to Negril

Negril is the farthest of the three main areas that visitors ask about, at roughly 81 km (50 miles) southwest of the airport. The A1 runs through Montego Bay, Lucea and into Hanover, and the beaches and cliffs at Negril start after Green Island. The drive usually takes 1 h 15 to 1 h 45, and a Friday afternoon or a wet morning can add time. Seven Mile Beach is long and some resorts sit at the north end near Bloody Bay, while the cliffs and the lighthouse are on the West End, so give the desk the exact property name.

Because Negril is a long way from the airport, a private transfer often looks different from a shared one. A shared van can spend an hour dropping other guests before yours. A direct private car reaches the hotel without extra stops, and for groups of four or more, an SUV or Sprinter is usually the more sensible way to go.

Montego Bay airport to Ocho Rios and the north coast

The route east to Ocho Rios follows the north coast through Falmouth, Duncans and Runaway Bay. The drive is roughly 100 to 110 km (62 to 68 miles) and normally takes 90 minutes to two hours. Ian Fleming International Airport at Ocho Rios is also an international airport, which can be easier if your airline serves it. If you are flying into Montego Bay to stay near Ocho Rios, pick the pickup time with the day's traffic in mind, because the road tightens through the towns.

Dunn's River Falls, the Blue Hole and other Ocho Rios attractions are popular day trips from Montego Bay, but the drive is long enough that guests are better served by a hotel in the area or a pre-planned hourly driver. See personal driver for hourly and day arrangements.

Safety, taxis and what to avoid

Jamaica's tourist board and the Government of Canada both give practical advice. The Canadian guidance is to use only taxis ordered from your hotel and authorised by the Jamaica Union of Travellers Association (JUTA), which carry red and white "PP" plates and a lime-green JUTA sticker, and to avoid unmarked taxis. It notes that taxis are not metered, so agree the fare before leaving. A pre-booked private transfer follows the same principle with the advantage that the fare is fixed in the booker and the driver is named on the confirmation.

Violent crime remains an issue in parts of Montego Bay according to the same advice, and tourists are advised not to resist robbers. Take the guidance seriously, keep valuables out of sight and do not hand your luggage to anyone who has not identified themselves as your driver.

Entry rules, hurricane season and timing

The tourist board's entry guidance says US, Canadian and UK citizens need no visa for stays of up to 90 days, that all visitors must show a return or onward ticket and that your passport must be valid for the whole stay. See the Visit Jamaica entry requirements and the Government of Canada's Jamaica page for the current rules. The UK government's Jamaica travel advice has a section on Hurricane Melissa recovery.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from early June to the end of November, which includes the period when this page is read. If a storm threatens, airlines reschedule early; flight tracking keeps your pickup attached to your new arrival, and the desk can move the booking.

Vehicles, child seats and groups

The Executive Sedan takes up to 3 passengers and the Luxury SUV takes up to 6 with 5 to 6 large bags; the Executive Sprinter takes up to 12 passengers and 12 bags, and mini-coaches of 20 to 56 seats are available on request. Models are shown "or similar" and confirmed at booking. The fleet page has the classes. Infant, toddler and booster seats are available if you ask at booking. For weddings and larger parties, see weddings.

More Caribbean arrival pages include Punta Cana, Nassau and St Lucia; the complete list is at resort transfers, and the regional overview is at Caribbean and Mexico. To learn how the booking works, read how private airport transfers work.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi from Montego Bay airport to Negril?

Taxis in Jamaica are not metered, so the fare is agreed before you leave and varies by operator and season. The Onroutz.ca booker shows a fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay. Using a taxi authorised by JUTA is the advice from Canada's government.

How far is Negril from Montego Bay airport?

About 81 km (50 miles) by road, which usually takes 1 h 15 to 1 h 45. Traffic through the towns, police checkpoints and weather can add time. Resorts at the north end of Seven Mile Beach are slightly closer than those on the West End cliffs.

Is Montego Bay airport open after Hurricane Melissa?

Yes, it reopened for limited commercial flights on 1 November 2025 and has been operating since, although repair work to the terminal has continued. Flight schedules and hotel reopenings vary, so check your airline and resort before you travel. The desk tracks your flight whatever the schedule.

Do I need the C5 form for Jamaica?

Air and cruise arrivals complete the free C5 declaration online at enterjamaica.gov.jm. Each traveller, including children, needs one, and you can submit it up to 30 days before arrival. Avoid third-party sites that charge a fee, and keep the confirmation on your phone.

Can I book a transfer from Montego Bay to Ocho Rios?

Yes. The drive is roughly 100 to 110 km (62 to 68 miles) and normally takes 90 minutes to two hours. Our desk can also arrange the reverse trip, hourly driving and day trips, with one booking and one invoice. Tell us the date and hotel and the booker will show the fare.

Is it safe to take a taxi from Montego Bay airport?

The Government of Canada advises using only JUTA-authorised taxis ordered from your hotel and avoiding unmarked cars. With a pre-booked transfer, the driver and vehicle are assigned in advance and shown on your confirmation, which removes the need to choose at the kerb.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

We track the flight and move the pickup with it. International arrivals get 60 minutes of free waiting from landing and domestic arrivals get 30. If a cancellation or rebooking changes your day, message the 24/7 desk and we will move the booking.
