Car service San Diego airport: a short drive with long edges

San Diego International (SAN) is one of the most central airports in a major U.S. city: about 3 miles (5 km) northwest of downtown, on a single runway beside the bay. A car service from San Diego airport sounds like overkill for a drive that takes a quarter of an hour. It is not, for three reasons: the pickup areas are set across crosswalks from baggage claim, the terminal itself is being rebuilt in stages, and most visitors are headed for places that are not downtown: Coronado, La Jolla, Del Mar, Carlsbad.

Onroutz.ca books, confirms and invoices a private San Diego airport transfer from Toronto; a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local partner drives it. This page covers SAN's terminals and what changed with New Terminal 1, the local bus, how taxis and ride apps load, drive times across the county, and when the bus is plainly the better choice.

How do I get from San Diego airport to downtown?

Downtown is about 5 km (3 mi) from SAN, usually 10 to 20 minutes by car. MTS Route 992 runs between the airport and downtown every 15 minutes, a ride of about 15 minutes. A taxi, ride app or private car gets you to the hotel door; the bus drops you at a stop.

Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and the rebuild

SAN has two terminals and 52 gates. Terminal 2 has an East and West concourse. Terminal 1 is being replaced: the first phase of the new Terminal 1 opened in September 2025 with 19 gates, and the second phase, which will demolish the original building and add 11 gates, is planned for completion in 2028. Layouts change as phases open, so we confirm your terminal from your flight number rather than assuming it.

Landing from Canada

Canadians reach San Diego mostly by connecting, and the connection decides the paperwork. A flight cleared at a Canadian preclearance airport such as Toronto Pearson, Vancouver or Calgary arrives in the United States without a CBP queue; CBP's preclearance page lists the ten airports. If you connect through a U.S. hub instead, you clear customs there, and your San Diego leg is a domestic flight. Either way, tell us the final flight number, because that is the one we track. Pacific Time is three hours behind Toronto, so a mid-afternoon landing feels like early evening at home.

Where the pickup points are

On the airport's ride-share page, the instructions are by terminal. At Terminal 1 you exit baggage claim and use the pedestrian crosswalk to reach the Ground Transportation Island; at Terminal 2 you use the crosswalk outside baggage claim to the Transportation Plaza, where rideshare pickup is in the second lane. Taxis are dispatched by five radio companies, and hotel and motel courtesy shuttles pick up at the Transportation Islands outside both terminals.

The airport adds one useful rule: only rides you requested are authorised, and drivers may not solicit on airport property. If someone approaches you inside the terminal, decline.

San Diego airport transportation compared

The bus is the one mode here with a genuine claim to be the best option for some travellers, so we have given it a fair row.

The Route 992 bus in detail

MTS Route 992 serves San Diego International Airport and America Plaza Station downtown, and MTS has stated that from Sunday 6 September 2026 it runs every 15 minutes until the end of service, with extra evening and late-night trips; service hours are roughly 4:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. daily. The downtown stop is near Santa Fe Depot, where the Trolley, the COASTER and Amtrak connect. See MTS's announcement. The fare is flat and is listed on the MTS site, and contactless payment works.

When the bus is the better choice

If you are travelling alone with one bag, staying near the Santa Fe Depot, America Plaza or a Trolley line, and not in a hurry, Route 992 is excellent. It is frequent, it is quick, and it is cheaper than any other way.

A private car is the better call when:

  • You are three or more, or you have luggage beyond a carry-on and a bag
  • You are heading to Coronado, La Jolla, Del Mar, Carlsbad or any address off the bus route
  • You land late and want a driver already waiting
  • You have children, strollers or car seats
  • You want to avoid navigating the crosswalk and curbs with bags while the terminals are in transition

Drive times from San Diego airport

San Diego traffic is gentler than Los Angeles, but I-5 and I-805 clog on weekday afternoons, and the Coronado Bridge is a single route into the island. Distances are by road; times assume ordinary traffic.

DestinationRoad distanceTypical drive timePeak caveat
Gaslamp Quarter and Convention Centerabout 6 km / 4 mi10–20 min25–35 min on Comic-Con and event days

La Jollaabout 22 km / 14 mi20–35 min40–60 min on I-5 in the afternoon
Del Marabout 38 km / 24 mi30–45 min55–75 min on weekday evenings
Carlsbad and Legolandabout 55 km / 34 mi40–60 min70–90 min on summer Fridays

Coronado: one bridge, one approach

Coronado sits across the bay, reached by the Coronado Bridge, a high arch that you cross into the island's grid of avenues and the resort at the Hotel del Coronado end. The bridge slows in the late afternoon. The alternative, driving the Silver Strand from the south, is a long way round. A driver who knows which lane is moving is the main advantage of a pre-booked car.

La Jolla and the north county

La Jolla lies north, past Mission Bay, with a hilly village that has narrow streets and tight parking. Del Mar, Solana Beach and Carlsbad are further up the coast along I-5. They are a quiet 45-minute run in the middle of a Tuesday and a stop-start grind on a Friday evening.

Convention and event arrivals

San Diego is a conference city. The waterfront convention centre sits beside the Gaslamp, and the largest events fill the hotels around it. San Diego Comic-Con is usually held in July, and the days on each side bring heavy arrival and departure volumes, with hotel lobbies queueing for vehicles. If you are attending, book your airport transfer early and confirm the hotel's loading area, because streets near the centre are often closed or restricted.

Business travel

SAN is a short hop from Silicon Valley, Los Angeles and Phoenix, and the biotech and defence corridors in Sorrento Valley and Kearny Mesa generate steady corporate trips. Our executive car service page covers corporate accounts with monthly invoicing, and the travel desk arranges multi-leg itineraries on one booking.

Cruise days at San Diego

San Diego's cruise terminals are on the Embarcadero, a few minutes from the airport. Embarkation windows are set by the cruise line, so an early flight suits a late-morning check-in better than a late one. Tell us the ship name and the embarkation window when you book, and we will time the pickup. Our cruise transfers hub explains how port transfers are planned.

Vehicles, tracking and meet and greet

SAN is not a big airport, so most pickups are straightforward. These classes cover the usual San Diego trips:

  • Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar): up to 3 passengers, 2 large and 2 cabin bags
  • First Class Sedan (S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar): up to 3 passengers
  • Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar): up to 6 passengers, 5 to 6 large bags
  • Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter): up to 12 passengers, 12 bags

Every airport pickup is flight-tracked, with 60 free minutes after an international landing and 30 after a domestic one. A name-board greeter is available on request: see the meet and greet page. The fleet page lists the vehicle classes, shown as "or similar" and confirmed at booking.

Cancellation terms

More than 72 hours' notice: no charge. 72 hours or less: 10%. 48 hours or less: 50%. 24 hours or less or a no-show: 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup. If your trip falls during a major event, check the confirmation: the deadline may differ.

Southern California and beyond

San Diego pairs naturally with Los Angeles: see Los Angeles LAX and LAX to Disneyland. For Arizona, see Phoenix. The U.S. region hub lists every American city we cover, and the airport transfers hub explains the service.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a bus from San Diego airport to downtown?

Yes. MTS Route 992 runs between SAN and downtown San Diego, serving the airport and America Plaza Station. From 6 September 2026 it runs every 15 minutes until end of service, and the trip is about 15 minutes. It suits solo travellers with light bags.

How far is San Diego airport from downtown?

About 5 km (3 mi). By car it is usually 10 to 20 minutes, and 25 to 35 minutes in rush hour or on convention days. The short distance is the main reason travellers underestimate the pickup arrangements.

Where do Uber and Lyft pick up at San Diego airport?

At Terminal 1, exit baggage claim, use the pedestrian crosswalk and follow signs to the Ground Transportation Island. At Terminal 2, cross the main crosswalk to the Transportation Plaza, where rideshare pickup is in the second lane. The layout changes with construction, so follow the signs.

How much is a taxi from San Diego airport to downtown?

Taxis are metered and dispatched by licensed companies, so the fare depends on route and traffic. We do not state a figure. Our private transfer has a fixed all-in fare shown in the booker before you pay, so traffic on I-5 or an event does not change it.

Can you take me from San Diego airport to Coronado?

Yes. Coronado is about 13 km (8 mi) away, usually 15 to 25 minutes, and 30 to 40 minutes at weekday peaks because the Coronado Bridge is the main route. Give the hotel name so the driver can pick the right entrance.

How long is the drive from San Diego airport to La Jolla?

About 22 km (14 mi), usually 20 to 35 minutes. On weekday afternoons I-5 north can take 40 to 60 minutes. For hotel arrivals in La Jolla village, tell us the hotel name because some streets are narrow and one-way.

Do I need a car seat in San Diego?

If you are travelling with a young child, yes, and you should request it at booking. Child seats come in infant, toddler and booster sizes and can be added to the booking. Give each child's age and weight so we can confirm the right seat with the local partner.

What is the best way to get from San Diego airport to the cruise terminal?

A short drive of about 5 km (3 mi), usually 10 to 20 minutes. A private car handles luggage to the terminal door, and the driver can be timed to the embarkation window. Tell us the ship and the time on your boarding documents when you book.
