Arrivals at Delhi are rarely quiet. Terminal 3 handles the international banks of flights, the immigration halls fill when several wide-bodies land together, and the road outside is a lesson in how a megacity manages traffic. For a first-time visitor the question is not only how to reach a hotel, but how to do it without negotiating fares at the kerb after a long flight. This page explains the options for a Delhi airport transfer, from the Airport Express metro to a prepaid taxi to a pre-booked private pickup, gives honest distances and times, and shows when a name-board meet and greet is worth adding.
What is the best Delhi airport transfer to your hotel?
The Airport Express metro is quick and avoids road traffic for travellers going to New Delhi station or a hotel near one. A pre-booked private car is the better choice for groups, families, heavy luggage, late-night or early-morning arrivals, and first-time visitors, with a driver waiting at the arrivals exit and a fixed fare shown before you pay.
India rewards preparation. The Government of Canada's advice for Delhi arrivals is plain: use officially marked taxis or pre-paid transport services at the airport, agree fares in advance or insist on the meter, avoid sharing a taxi with strangers and avoid travelling alone at night. A confirmed car with a named chauffeur gives you all of that without a conversation.
Delhi airport to the city: every option compared
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Airport Express metro (T3 to New Delhi station) | About 20 min on the train, 45 – 75 min with the hotel leg | Fixed metro fare; check the operator | Carry your own; security checks at stations | One or two travellers heading to New Delhi station or Connaught Place |
| Prepaid taxi counter | 40 – 90 min | Fixed price from the counter | Boot space for most cases | Travellers who want a taxi without a meter |
| Metered or app taxi | 40 – 90 min | Metered or surge-priced | Boot space | Residents with local apps |
| Pre-booked private car | 40 – 90 min | Fixed fare via booker | Everything in the boot | 3+ travellers, children, heavy bags, late arrivals, Gurugram and Aerocity hotels, business travel |
Distance by road to Connaught Place is about 16 – 20 km (10 – 12 mi), depending on the route taken from the terminal. Expressway links run toward Gurugram to the south-west, and Aerocity hotels are only about 4 – 5 km (2.5 – 3 mi) from the terminals. Delhi traffic is not predictable: the same drive can take 25 minutes at 3 am and well over an hour at 6 pm, and during the winter months fog and smog can delay flights as well as roads.
When the Delhi metro is the better choice
The Airport Express Line is an express metro that connects Terminal 3 with New Delhi station, with a stop at Aerocity. Travel sources put the trip at 15 – 20 minutes, with trains every 10 – 20 minutes. If you are staying near New Delhi station, in Paharganj, or you can use another metro line from there to Connaught Place, it is quick and avoids the roads. It is a good plan for a solo traveller with a small bag on a weekday afternoon.
It is less suitable when you carry several suitcases, because metro security checks and stairs slow you down. It does not run through the small hours, and published first and last train times vary between sources, so confirm with the operator if you land at night. Note too that Terminal 1 is on a different metro line, so check which terminal your flight uses.
Terminals at Delhi airport
Terminal 3 is the main international terminal and also handles many full-service domestic flights. Terminal 1 handles domestic flights, mostly low-cost carriers. Terminal 2, historically used for domestic flights, has been involved in terminal reorganisation, so check your airline for the current allocation. The Japan Airlines transit guide notes that moving between terminals can take 20 – 25 minutes by shuttle bus, so if you are connecting or changing airlines on one ticket, leave time.
Your confirmation names the terminal and the pickup point for your flight. Give the booker the flight number and the desk uses it to track the arrival.
Delhi airport pickup and meet and greet
International arrivals clear immigration, collect bags, and exit into a public area where drivers wait. Under a standard Delhi airport pickup the chauffeur meets you at the arrivals exit with a name board, or an alias name if you prefer privacy. A Delhi airport meet and greet adds a more hands-on welcome. Where terminal rules limit entry to ticketed passengers, the chauffeur waits at the nearest permitted point, and the confirmation says where.
Delays are caught by the tracking and the pickup shifts. After an international landing you have 60 minutes of free waiting, 30 after a domestic landing, and 15 on other pickups. Delhi's immigration halls can run long when flights bunch, and that window exists for exactly that reason. Read more about airport meet and greet and the broader meet and greet service.
Delhi airport taxi service: scams to avoid and safer options
The Government of Canada's India advisory does not single out Delhi airport, but it warns that scammers target foreigners at airports and tourist areas. It recommends officially marked taxis or prepaid services, and it advises against accepting offers from drivers to export jewels, gemstones or carpets, however convincing. It also cautions against unsolicited offers of cheap transport or accommodation, long detours and unsolicited tours.
Road conditions and road safety are poor throughout India, according to the same advisory. It recommends avoiding travel outside urban centres after dark. A professional chauffeur on a pre-arranged ride reduces exposure to all of that.
Late-night and early-morning arrivals
Many long-haul and Gulf connections reach Delhi in the small hours, and that is when the city's road network is at its quietest and its rail service is closed. A pre-booked car turns a 2 am landing into a straightforward drive. Tell the booker the flight number, and the desk tracks the real arrival time rather than the scheduled one, so a flight delayed by winter fog still finds the chauffeur at the exit.
Delhi airport to Agra, Gurugram and beyond
Delhi is the entry point for the Golden Triangle. The drive from the airport to Agra is about 225 km (140 mi), usually 3 h 30 – 4 h by the Yamuna Expressway, and it can be much longer when traffic is heavy at the Delhi end. The full route is covered on the Delhi airport to Agra page. Gurugram, the business district to the south-west, is a short drive from the terminals in light traffic and much slower at peak hours. Noida and Greater Noida sit on the other side of the city, and a car with a driver who knows the approach saves time.
A few travellers fly onward to the coast. The Goa airport and Mumbai airport pages explain what to expect on landing.

- First Class Sedan (S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar): three passengers, extra refinement.
- Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar): six people and five or six large bags.
- Executive Sprinter: twelve passengers and twelve bags, a good fit for wedding guests and delegations.
Models are shown as "or similar" and confirmed at booking. On request: mini-coaches and coaches of 20 to 56 seats, Maybach, Rolls-Royce, stretch limousines and armoured vehicles, with availability confirmed when you book. Child, toddler and booster seats can be added, and most vehicles carry water and phone charging. The fleet page has details.
Entry rules for India

Planning more of your Asian itinerary
For other Asian cities, use the Asia-Pacific hub. The airport transfers hub lists every airport, and how private airport transfers work explains the booking steps. For a driver for the day in Delhi, see the personal driver service.
Privacy is part of the job. Chauffeurs never photograph clients or post about trips, and NDAs are available. The service is transport only: Onroutz.ca is not a security company, supplies no armed drivers or bodyguards, and works with a client's security team when one is present.
Official sources worth bookmarking

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation publishes Airport Express timetables and fares, and India's tourism ministry lists the nearest airport and rail station for each city on its Delhi page.
