How do you get from Toronto to Buffalo Airport?

The simplest way is a private car on the QEW and across the border at Fort Erie or Queenston-Lewiston: about 172 km from Pearson, 2 h to 2 h 30 of driving plus the border queue. Onroutz.ca runs this cross-border trip from Toronto with a fixed fare quoted before you book.

Thousands of southern Ontario travellers compare flights from Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) with flights from Pearson every year. That is a sensible habit, but a ticket is only half the cost: the other half is the ground leg, the border and the risk of missing a departure. This page is about that second half. It shows how long the run really takes, what you need to cross the border, which bridge makes sense, and when a booked car with a chauffeur is better than a rental, a coach or a train.

Toronto to Buffalo Airport at a glance

  • Distance: about 172 km (107 mi) from Toronto Pearson to the BUF terminal; about 158 km (98 mi) from downtown Toronto. The figure moves by a few kilometres with the bridge you choose.
  • Driving time: 2 h to 2 h 30 without the border. Add 15 minutes to over an hour for the crossing, depending on the day and the bridge.
  • Road: Highway 427 or the 403 to the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW), then the QEW to Fort Erie for the Peace Bridge, or to Niagara Falls for the Queenston-Lewiston or Rainbow bridges, then Interstate 190 and the roads to Genesee Street.
  • Destination: Buffalo Niagara International Airport, 4200 Genesee Street, Buffalo, New York 14225.
  • Who drives: the Onroutz.ca fleet and chauffeurs, dispatched from Toronto. Toronto-to-USA cross-border trips run from Toronto, so the car and the chauffeur are the same on both sides of the river.

The Maple Leaf is a pleasant way to cross the border. Amtrak runs it daily between Toronto Union Station and New York, with stops that include Niagara Falls, Buffalo-Depew and Buffalo-Exchange Street, and a border crossing at Niagara Falls. Neither Buffalo station is at the airport, though, so you still need a local leg and a plan for your bags.

When the train or the coach is the better choice

A train or coach is the better choice when you travel alone, carry one suitcase, have a mid-morning or afternoon flight and are comfortable with a connection. The cost saving is real. It also helps if you do not want a driver crossing the border for you.

For anyone with an early departure, a late arrival, children or more than one bag, the maths changes. Coaches rarely run before dawn or after dark, rail timetables are daily but sparse, and a missed connection on the US side leaves you in the wrong place at the wrong hour.

When a private car wins the Toronto to Buffalo airport run

  1. Early departures. A 7 am flight needs a 2 am pick-up from Toronto. No public mode runs then.
  2. Late arrivals. After a late landing at BUF, no coach or train will carry you across the border. A chauffeur tracks your flight, waits at the terminal, and drives you straight home.
  3. Three or more people. One Luxury SUV (up to six passengers, 5 to 6 large bags) replaces three seats on a coach and a taxi at each end.
  4. Heavy luggage. Skis, golf bags and strollers do not suit shuttle vans.
  5. Children. Seats for babies, toddlers and older children are provided when requested at booking.
  6. Border nerves. First-time travellers and families appreciate a chauffeur who has done the crossing hundreds of times and knows which lane is moving.

Peace Bridge, Queenston-Lewiston or Rainbow: which crossing?

Three Niagara River bridges serve a car heading to Buffalo, and the right one is the one with the shortest wait on the day. The chauffeur checks live conditions before the final approach.

  • Peace Bridge (Fort Erie to Buffalo). The shortest route to BUF, since you arrive on the US side close to Interstate 190 and the airport. The Peace Bridge Authority collects its auto toll one way, into Canada, so you do not pay it southbound; you pay it on the way home.
  • Queenston-Lewiston Bridge. Further north, via the Niagara Parkway or the QEW and Highway 405. It is useful when the Peace Bridge is backed up, and it adds roughly 20 to 30 minutes of driving.
  • Rainbow Bridge. At Niagara Falls, mostly used by sightseeing traffic. It is a fallback when the others are jammed. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission publishes live crossing conditions for its three bridges, including the NEXUS-only Whirlpool Bridge.

For the return trip, the Canada Border Services Agency posts wait times for Canada-bound traffic. A CBSA snapshot on the morning of 9 October 2026 listed about 7 minutes for travellers at the Peace Bridge, no delay at Queenston-Lewiston and about 1 minute at the Rainbow Bridge. Those are single readings, not promises; Friday afternoons, summer weekends and holiday weekends can be far slower.

What you need to cross the border

Every passenger is responsible for carrying the right documents, and officers can refuse entry without them. Official guidance changes, so check before you travel.

Canadian citizens. The Government of Canada's travel advisory for the United States says Canadians flying need a valid passport or a NEXUS card (at designated airports), and Canadians arriving by land or water aged 16 and over need a passport or a Trusted Traveller Program card. Children aged 15 and under can use a passport, a birth certificate or a citizenship certificate. Most US ports of entry now use facial recognition, and Canadians who plan to stay more than 30 days must register with the US government.

Visitors to Canada. Travellers from other countries need whatever US entry document applies to their nationality. If you travel on the Visa Waiver Program, you need an approved ESTA and an e-passport. Check this before you leave home, because an airline will not board you without it.

NEXUS. A NEXUS lane at the bridge works only if everyone in the vehicle holds a valid card. If your party is mixed, use the regular lane.

Planning your timeline from the front door

The mistake we see most often is counting only the driving time. Use this sequence for a domestic US departure from BUF:

  1. Start with your flight time and subtract 2 hours for check-in, bag drop and security.
  2. Subtract 45 to 60 minutes for the border queue. Add more on a Friday afternoon, a long weekend or a major event in Niagara.
  3. Subtract 2 h 15 to 2 h 30 for the drive from the GTA.
  4. Subtract 15 to 20 minutes for loading at your door.

For a 12:00 flight, that means a pickup between 5:00 and 5:30 am. If you are flying internationally from BUF, add another hour. Your confirmation shows the pickup time we suggest; you can ask for earlier or later.

Your pickup in Toronto

Pickups are at your home, hotel, office or terminal at Pearson. From Pearson, see the Toronto Pearson airport transfer page for waiting rules and meet and greet. From elsewhere in the city, 15 minutes of waiting are included for non-airport pickups. Flight tracking applies on airport pickups, with 60 minutes of free waiting after international landings and 30 after domestic.

Your arrival or pickup at BUF

Buffalo Niagara International Airport lists its address as 4200 Genesee Street, with ground transportation categories for rental cars, shuttles, taxis, rideshare, limousines and public transport. A pre-booked chauffeur drops you at departures and, on the return, meets you inside arrivals with a name board on request. Tell us your airline and flight number so we can follow the flight, and keep your passport and customs declaration ready for the return crossing.

Booking and cancellation

The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay. Cancellation is counted from the scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours' notice is free; 72 hours or less is 10%; 48 hours or less is 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show is 100%. A convention or big event may come with a different cancellation window, shown on your confirmation.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to drive from Toronto to Buffalo Airport?

About 2 h to 2 h 30 for roughly 172 km from Pearson, plus the border. Allow 15 minutes to over an hour for the crossing and more on Friday afternoons and holiday weekends. Plan the whole run at 3 to 3 h 30 door to door.

Which border crossing is fastest for Buffalo Airport?

The Peace Bridge is the most direct for BUF, but Queenston-Lewiston is sometimes faster when the Peace Bridge is backed up. Wait times shift hour to hour, so the chauffeur checks conditions before the final approach and chooses the bridge on the day.

Do I need a passport to go from Toronto to Buffalo?

Canadians arriving by land aged 16 and over need a passport or a Trusted Traveller card, according to the Government of Canada. Visitors need the entry document that applies to their nationality, such as an approved ESTA and an e-passport for Visa Waiver travellers.

Is it cheaper to fly from Buffalo than from Toronto?

Sometimes the airfare is lower, but the full cost includes the ground leg, border time and the risk of a missed flight. Compare the whole trip, including the car or coach, parking or a chauffeured transfer, before choosing.

Can I use the NEXUS lane?

A NEXUS lane works only if every person in the vehicle holds a valid NEXUS card. If one passenger does not, the whole car must use the standard lane. Tell us in advance if your party has NEXUS members.

How much should I tip a limo driver in Canada or the US?

A tip of 15 to 20 per cent is common in both countries for a chauffeured trip. Check whether your booking already includes a gratuity. Add a little more if the chauffeur manages heavy bags or a very early start.

Can the same car bring me home from Buffalo?

Yes. Book the return as a separate trip or as a two-leg itinerary. Give us the flight number and your landing time, and the chauffeur tracks it. Allow for immigration at the border on the way back.

What happens if my flight from Buffalo is delayed?

For a return pickup at BUF, the chauffeur tracks the flight, so your pickup follows the actual landing time. After landing, 60 minutes of waiting are included for international arrivals and 30 minutes for domestic. The 24/7 desk advises if a longer delay changes the plan.
