Punta Cana airport is unlike most in the Caribbean. It is privately owned, built around open-air terminals with palm-thatched roofs, and the nearest hotel may be five minutes or ninety minutes away. A Punta Cana airport transfer therefore depends on exactly which stretch of coast you booked. Onroutz.ca arranges private Punta Cana airport transfers with a licensed local driver, flight tracking and a fixed fare shown before you pay. This page gives the distances, explains the terminals and the Dominican entry form, and compares the transfer with the taxis and shuttles you will be offered at the exit.

How does a Punta Cana airport transfer work?

You book online with your flight number and resort. The Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto confirms the booking and assigns a vetted, licensed, commercially insured Dominican partner. The driver tracks your flight, waits with a name board and drives you to your resort or villa for the fixed fare you were shown.

The ride is delivered by a local partner, and the Toronto desk handles the booking, the support and the invoice. One confirmation, one invoice, one 24/7 contact. Partner cars are four model years old at most, and each vehicle and driver is licensed and commercially insured. The confirmation shows the pickup instructions and the driver's name once assigned.

International arrivals include 60 minutes of free waiting after landing, which is useful at an airport where several wide-body flights from Toronto, New York and Europe often land together and immigration lines are long. If you would like the driver to meet you inside the arrivals hall, request a name-board meet and greet at booking, and use an alias on the board if you prefer privacy.

Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ): terminals and location

The airport is owned and operated by Grupo Puntacana, and is described as the first privately owned international airport in the world. It sits about 3 km (2 miles) inland on the highway between Higüey and La Romana. It has five terminals: International Terminals A and B, an FBO terminal for executive general aviation, a national terminal for domestic charters and a VIP terminal. Terminal A is the older one and uses aircraft stairs; Terminal B opened in 2014, is fully enclosed and has jet bridges.

You do not need to work out which terminal applies, because flight tracking sends the driver to the right exit. Walk out of the arrivals hall, past the hotel representatives and tour desks, and find the name board. If you cannot see it within a couple of minutes, message the desk using the link in your confirmation.

The Government of Canada's advice for the Dominican Republic is that thieves may target checked baggage in departures areas, so keep valuables in your carry-on. Use official taxi stands at the airport, not private drivers who approach you in the hall.

Punta Cana airport to the resorts: distances and drive times

The coast is long, and resorts are spread across it. From north to south, the main areas are Uvero Alto, Macao, Arena Gorda, Bávaro, El Cortecito, Las Corales and Cabeza de Toro on the northern arc, and Cabo Engaño, Punta Cana and Juanillo to the south. Cap Cana is a planned community south of Punta Cana Village. Use these planning figures:

  • Punta Cana Village, Juanillo and Cap Cana: about 5 to 20 km (3 to 12 miles), usually 10 to 25 minutes.
  • Bávaro, El Cortecito and Cabeza de Toro: about 15 to 30 km (9 to 19 miles), usually 20 to 40 minutes.
  • Macao and Arena Gorda: about 25 to 40 km (16 to 25 miles), usually 35 to 55 minutes.
  • Uvero Alto: about 40 to 55 km (25 to 34 miles), usually 45 to 70 minutes.
  • Higüey: about 45 km (28 miles), around an hour.
  • La Romana and Santo Domingo: along the same highway system; Santo Domingo is a couple of hours away.

Bávaro itself spreads over roughly 15 km of coast, so two hotels with the same address district can be 20 minutes apart. Give the desk the resort's full name. The final access road at some all-inclusives is long, and the gate may need your reservation number.

Package shuttles are the right choice when they are included and the schedule matches your flight. The cost is time: a van that stops at six resorts can add an hour to your arrival. Taxis are not metered in the Dominican Republic. The Government of Canada's advice is to use only the official stands at the airport and to avoid motorcycle taxis known as motoconchos. A private transfer avoids the negotiation and the extra stops, and the fare is fixed before you pay.

The Dominican E-ticket and other entry paperwork

Travellers must complete an electronic form, the E-ticket, to enter and exit the country. The Government of Canada's advice says you need a new one for each trip. The UK government says it can be filled in up to seven days before arrival, produces a QR code to show at check-in or at the border, and includes the customs declaration. The tourist card is included in the price of an airline ticket if you arrive by air.

For stays of up to 30 days, no tourist visa is required for Canadian or British visitors. Until 31 December 2026, both governments say tourists can enter if the passport is valid for the duration of the visit, although airlines may apply stricter rules and the requirement is longer for other purposes. Officials may ask for proof of funds, a return or onward ticket and the address where you will stay, and the UK advice says border officials take fingerprints and a photograph. The Dominican Republic's tourism board confirms the form is free, must be completed before you reach the airline counter and no longer has to be filed 72 hours ahead; see its entry requirements. Read the Government of Canada's Dominican Republic advice and the UK government's entry requirements before you fly.

Road safety and why a licensed driver matters

The Government of Canada states that accidents occur frequently on Dominican roads, advises considering a licensed professional driver for road travel, and warns of drive-by robberies at traffic lights, so keep doors locked and windows up. It also advises using private intercity buses from reputable operators. Rural roads away from the resort strip are not lit, and motorbikes, trucks and livestock share them.

The airport highway is a main road, but travellers who rent a car should know that a quiet drive at midday can turn into a dense one at dusk. If your flight lands after dark, a pre-booked local driver is a more comfortable choice than picking up a rental car and navigating to a resort you have never seen. A driver also helps if you plan an excursion to Higüey's basilica, a catamaran departure or a dinner at a restaurant outside the resort gates.

Bávaro, Cap Cana and Uvero Alto: what each stretch is like

Bávaro has the largest concentration of all-inclusive resorts, a long beach and the busiest roads. Traffic slows on the main avenue near the shopping areas, and a transfer to the north end takes noticeably longer than one to the south end. For specific resort areas, see Punta Cana resorts.

Cap Cana and Punta Cana Village are south of the airport, with a mix of resorts, marinas, golf courses and residential communities. Hotels here are the shortest rides and some of the most gated, so give the desk your reservation name and the resort entrance you were told to use.

Uvero Alto and Macao are the quieter northern beaches. They feel remote, and the roads reach hotel entrances that are far from the main avenue. Plan for a transfer of 45 to 70 minutes at Uvero Alto, and add the final access road to your estimate.

Season, weather and timing your pickup

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from early June to the end of November, and the Dominican Republic is exposed to it, so check forecasts for the week of travel and keep your booking details handy. Most visitors arrive on morning or afternoon flights, and the busiest windows at PUJ are the same few hours for each airline bank. If you can choose, a mid-afternoon arrival avoids the longest immigration lines and leaves daylight for the drive to a distant resort. Resorts usually hold rooms until the afternoon, so ask about early check-in or luggage storage if you land in the morning.

Families, golf groups, weddings and corporate trips

Punta Cana is a destination for families and weddings. A family of five arriving from Toronto often has two car seats, a stroller and five large bags; the Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar) takes up to 6 passengers and 5 to 6 large bags, and the Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter) takes up to 12 passengers and 12 bags. Coaches seating 20 to 56 can be arranged on request. Seats for babies, toddlers and older children can be requested at booking. See the fleet.

Wedding guests arrive on different flights and at different resorts. A set of staggered pickups can sit on one itinerary with one invoice. See weddings and wedding guest shuttles. Golf bags need advance notice; list them at booking. A driver for several days can be arranged through the personal driver service.

Booking, waiting time and cancellation

The booker asks for the airport, resort, date, flight and the number of travellers and bags, and shows the fixed all-in fare before you pay. Monthly-invoiced corporate accounts and multi-leg itineraries can be arranged. Waiting time is 60 minutes after an international landing, 30 after a domestic landing and 15 on other pickups.

On cancellation, the terms count back from the scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours' notice carries no charge; 72 hours or less is 10%; 48 hours or less is 50%; and 24 hours or less or a no-show is 100%. Some large events have a separate deadline, and you will see it on the confirmation. Chauffeurs do not photograph clients or post about trips, and an NDA can be arranged.

For other resort airports, see Cancun, Montego Bay and St Lucia. The complete list is at the resort transfers hub, and the overview is at Caribbean and Mexico. To see how the process works, read how private airport transfers work, or plan from the Toronto desk.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Punta Cana airport from Bávaro and Cap Cana?

Cap Cana and Punta Cana Village are usually 10 to 25 minutes away. Bávaro hotels are about 20 to 40 minutes depending on which end of the coast you are staying. Uvero Alto is the farthest of the main areas, at roughly 45 to 70 minutes. Give the desk the exact resort for a precise estimate.

How much is a taxi from Punta Cana airport to the hotel?

Taxis in the Dominican Republic are not metered, and fares depend on the zone and the vehicle. The Government of Canada advises using only the official stands at the airport. The fare you see on the booker for your pickup, drop-off and vehicle is the fare you pay.

Do I need the Dominican E-ticket form?

Yes. Travellers must complete the electronic E-ticket form to enter and exit the country, and a new one is needed for each trip. The UK government says you can fill it in up to seven days before arrival and show the QR code at check-in. The tourist card is included in your airfare.

Is it better to book a transfer or take a hotel shuttle?

If your package includes a shuttle and the schedule matches your flight, use it. A private transfer makes more sense for a villa, a large group, a late flight or a resort at the far end of the coast, because it goes directly and the fare is fixed in advance.

Can you take me from Punta Cana airport to Santo Domingo or La Romana?

Yes. Santo Domingo is a couple of hours away and La Romana lies along the same highway system. Tell the desk the address and time, and the booker will show the fare. The Government of Canada recommends considering a licensed professional driver for road travel in the Dominican Republic.

Do you provide child seats in Punta Cana?

Child, toddler and booster seats can be added on request at booking. Tell the desk the children's ages or weights so that the right seats are fitted. Seats cannot be guaranteed if you ask on the day of arrival.

What if my flight lands late at Punta Cana?

Flight tracking moves the pickup to the actual landing time. Free waiting covers 60 minutes from an international landing and 30 minutes from a domestic one. If you expect a long delay, message the 24/7 desk and we will adjust the booking.
