Bali is a small island with a surprisingly complicated road network. One airport, I Gusti Ngurah Rai at Tuban, serves it, and almost every visitor lands there. From the arrivals gate the resorts of Kuta and Seminyak are close on the map, Canggu and Ubud are farther, and the south Bukit peninsula lies in the opposite direction. The distance in kilometres says little about the trip: a ride to Seminyak of about 10 km can take 20 minutes or most of an hour, and Ubud's roughly 38 km can take two hours. This page sets out the real options for Bali airport transfers, explains the advice worth following on arrival, and shows when a pre-booked car makes the first hour of a holiday easier.
Is Denpasar the only airport in Bali?
Yes. I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), in Tuban about 13 km south of Denpasar, is the island's only commercial airport. A second airport in the north has been proposed, but it is not operating. Every international and domestic flight to Bali lands at Ngurah Rai, whichever resort you are heading to.
The airport has a separate international terminal, which opened in 2013, and a domestic terminal. Your confirmation names the terminal and the meeting point for your flight. Bali is on Central Indonesia Time, UTC+8, and traffic drives on the left.
Bali airport to your hotel: every option compared
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Airport taxi counter | 20 – 120 min depending on destination | Fixed counter price; confirm the current price and ask for a receipt | Boot space for most bags | Short hops to Kuta and Legian |
| Metered taxi (meter must be on) | 20 – 120 min | Metered; insist on the meter | Boot space | Travellers who can show a hotel address |
| Ride-hailing app | 20 – 120 min | App-quoted, can surge; pickup rules vary by zone | Boot space | Visitors already set up with local apps |
| Hotel or villa shuttle | Similar to a car | Arranged with the property | Varies | Resorts that offer pickup |
| Pre-booked private car | 20 – 120 min | Fixed fare via booker | Everything in the boot | 3+ travellers, families, surfboards and golf bags, villa stays, late arrivals |
Bali has no train and no metro, so the choice is between road options. That puts more weight on the quality of the driver and the route than it does in a city with a rail link. The Government of Canada advises using only taxi companies with meters, never entering a cab that already has passengers, avoiding street-hailed or unmarked services, and arranging a ride with a reliable company in advance.
Drive times from Ngurah Rai to the main areas
These are approximate and assume daytime driving. Afternoons and evenings are slower, and Seminyak and Canggu can jam badly at sunset.
- Kuta, Legian and Tuban: a few kilometres from the terminal, usually 10 – 25 minutes.
- Seminyak: about 9 – 11 km (6 – 7 mi), typically 20 – 45 minutes.
- Canggu: about 20 km (12 mi), allow 1 – 1.5 hours.
- Ubud: about 38 km (24 mi), allow 1.5 – 2 hours. See Bali airport to Ubud for the full route.
- Jimbaran, Uluwatu and the Bukit peninsula: south of the airport, typically 20 – 75 minutes depending on how far down the peninsula you go.
- Nusa Dua and Sanur: both are on the south and east coast, generally 20 – 45 minutes, and the Bali Mandara toll road links the Nusa Dua area to the airport.
The detail that most affects the journey is traffic around Seminyak, Petitenget and the Canggu approach. A chauffeur who knows the secondary lanes can save time, and one who knows which villa lanes are too narrow for a larger vehicle can tell you where you will walk the last stretch. Read Bali airport to Seminyak for that route in detail.
How much are airport transfers in Bali, and which taxi is cheaper?
Prices vary by destination, hour and vehicle, and published figures change often. Our rule is simple: the booker shows a fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup and drop-off before you pay. A metered taxi can be cheaper or dearer depending on the route and traffic, and counters and apps each have their own pricing logic. For a family of four with luggage, a single larger car often compares well with two small taxis, and a single booking avoids splitting the group at the rank.
On the Government of Canada's advice, the real safety question is not price but legitimacy. Use a company with meters, avoid unmarked cars and street hails, and do not take a cab that already has other passengers. Ride-hailing availability at the airport depends on the pickup zone, so check where the drivers are directed to wait before you count on an app.
Is it easy to get transport in Bali?
Getting transport is not hard, but choosing well takes a little knowledge. The arrivals area is busy, and you will be approached by people offering rides. Some are legitimate counter staff. Others are touts who quote high prices. After a long flight, none of that is a good start. A pre-arranged chauffeur waiting with your name makes the first decision for you. Our confirmation names the driver and the vehicle, so you can verify before you step into the car.
Entering Bali: the visa, the declaration form and the tourist levy
The Government of Canada says a tourist visa is required for Indonesia, and Canadians may obtain one in advance or on arrival at select points of entry. A round-trip or onward ticket is required for all visa types. The All Indonesia Declaration Form is mandatory and must be completed before you check in for your flight, up to 72 hours before arrival, and you show the QR code on arrival. The Canadian advisory also says the Bali Tourist Levy is required for travellers entering Bali in addition to visa fees. The Bali provincial government's levy site lists the amount as IDR 150,000, and a QR voucher is emailed after payment. Use official sites only, and never hand your passport to an unsolicited visa agent.
How long customs and immigration take depends on how many flights land at once, and we cannot promise a time. The chauffeur tracks your flight and waits through the queue, and the free waiting window below covers slow arrivals.
Meeting your driver at Ngurah Rai
After immigration, baggage reclaim and customs, you walk out into the public hall. Your chauffeur is waiting with a name board on request, or an alias name if you prefer privacy. Your confirmation shows the terminal and meeting point.
Flights are tracked, so a delay moves the pickup. After an international landing you have 60 minutes of free waiting, 30 after a domestic one and 15 on other pickups. Many Bali flights arrive in late-evening banks, and these arrivals are exactly when the free waiting window earns its keep.
Nyepi and other days when Bali stops
Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, falls each spring, and the airport suspends flights for the day while roads are closed to traffic. Check the date for your year before booking flights, and plan to be at your accommodation the evening before. Large Hindu festivals and processions can also close roads for an hour or two, which is a good reason to share your hotel name with the desk when you book.
How an Onroutz.ca Bali transfer is arranged
Onroutz.ca is run from Toronto. In Indonesia a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner supplies the vehicle and chauffeur, and Toronto books, confirms, supports and invoices. That means one confirmation, one invoice and one 24/7 contact, even if the itinerary also includes Jakarta or Singapore. Every partner car is within four model years of new, except Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach, allowed up to seven. Onroutz.ca does not own cars or offices in Indonesia.
- Book with the flight number, villa or hotel name and the party size, including surfboards or golf bags.
- See the fixed all-in fare before you pay.
- Check the driver's name and vehicle in your confirmation.
- Land. Your driver is tracking the flight.
Vehicles for a Bali arrival
Surfboards, golf bags and villa-length luggage lists make vehicle choice matter in Bali.
- Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar): three passengers, with two large and two cabin bags.
- First Class Sedan (S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar): three passengers in more comfort.
- Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar): six passengers and five or six large bags.
- Executive Sprinter: twelve passengers and twelve bags, for weddings and retreats.
The model is "or similar" and is confirmed at booking. Coaches of 20 to 56 seats, Maybach, Rolls-Royce, stretch limousines and armoured vehicles can be requested; availability is confirmed at booking. Child, toddler and booster seats can be added at booking, and most vehicles have water and phone charging. The fleet page shows more.
A driver for the rest of your stay
Many guests keep the same driver after the airport. A day with a private driver covers temples, rice terraces, Uluwatu and the north coast on the time you choose, and it is popular on Bali because public transport is limited. See private driver Bali for how that works. For other Asian stops, the Asia-Pacific hub lists every route, including Singapore Changi and Sydney. The airport transfers hub lists airports worldwide, and how private airport transfers work explains each step.
Chauffeurs do not photograph guests or post about the journey, and NDAs are available for private stays. Onroutz.ca is a transport service and not a security company; there are no armed drivers or bodyguards, and the desk works alongside a client's own security team.
Official sources worth bookmarking
The Government of Canada's Indonesia travel advice covers entry, the declaration form, taxis and motorcycle risk. The Bali provincial tourist levy site is where the levy is paid. Indonesia's immigration directorate lists visa types and links to its e-visa portal, and the All Indonesia platform is the official route to the declaration form. Confirm every rule before you travel.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get from Bali Airport to Seminyak?
Seminyak is about 9 – 11 km (6 – 7 mi) from Ngurah Rai, usually 20 – 45 minutes, and longer at sunset or in peak season when the main roads fill up.
How far is Ubud from Bali Airport?
About 38 km (24 mi). Allow 1.5 – 2 hours, because the roads through the villages north of Denpasar are busy for most of the day.
How much are airport transfers in Bali?
It depends on the destination, the vehicle and the time of day. For our service, the booker shows a fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup and drop-off before you pay, so there is nothing to negotiate on arrival.
Is Grab expensive in Bali?
App prices change with demand and time of day, and pickup zones at the airport vary. We cannot quote an app's price. A pre-booked car has a fare that is fixed in the booker before you pay, and the driver's details are in your confirmation.
Do I need a visa for Bali?
Canadians need a tourist visa for Indonesia, which can be obtained in advance or on arrival at select points of entry, according to the Government of Canada. You also need an onward ticket, the All Indonesia Declaration Form and the Bali Tourist Levy.
How much is the Bali tourist levy?
The Bali provincial levy site lists it as IDR 150,000 per person, paid online before or on arrival, with a QR voucher sent by email. The visa fee is separate.
What if my flight into Bali arrives late?
The flight is tracked and the pickup moves with it. After an international landing the chauffeur waits 60 minutes without charge, after a domestic landing 30, and on other pickups 15. The desk answers around the clock.
Can you take surfboards or golf bags?
Tell us at booking. Boards and bags take space, so choose a Luxury SUV or an Executive Sprinter, and the desk confirms the vehicle fits your equipment.
What is your cancellation policy?
Nothing is charged for cancellations made more than 72 hours before the scheduled pickup. At 72 hours or less the charge is 10%, at 48 hours or less it is 50%, and at 24 hours or less, or for a no-show, it is 100%. A large event can bring a different deadline, which your confirmation shows.
