What is the best way to get from DFW Airport to Dallas or Fort Worth?
DART's Orange Line from the Terminal A station reaches downtown Dallas in about 50 minutes, and TEXRail runs from Terminal B toward Fort Worth. For suburbs, groups, late arrivals or fixed appointments, a pre-booked car service from DFW picks you up at your terminal and drives door to door.
DFW is not close to either of its namesake cities. It sits between them, inside the boundaries of Grapevine, Irving, Euless and Coppell, and the airport itself is large enough that moving between terminals is a trip. Plenty of visitors are headed somewhere else altogether: Las Colinas, Plano, Frisco, Arlington's stadiums or the Gaylord Texan at Grapevine, which is only minutes away. Searches for a car service from DFW are usually about getting from the arrivals door to a specific address at a fixed time, and that is where a pre-booked chauffeur earns the booking. Outside Toronto, the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured US-licensed local transfer partner, and is booked, confirmed, supported and invoiced by the Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto.
Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) at a glance
- Location: about 16 to 19 miles (26 to 30 km) northwest of downtown Dallas and about 19 to 20 miles (30 to 32 km) northeast of downtown Fort Worth. Published figures differ by a few miles depending on the measurement point.
- Terminals: A, B, C, D and E, in a ring around the airport. Terminal D is the international terminal. The Skylink train connects terminals inside security, and the orange Terminal Link shuttle bus runs between terminals on the upper level, taking about 10 to 20 minutes.
- Ground transportation: taxis wait on the lower level of Terminals A through E, according to DFW. Limousine providers are on the lower-level curbside of each terminal.
- Typical drive times: 25 to 40 minutes to downtown Dallas off-peak, 25 to 40 minutes to Fort Worth; 50 to 90 minutes in the weekday evening peak.
- Delivered by: a US-licensed local transfer partner, with vehicles no more than four model years old (Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach up to seven).

According to DART, all Orange Line trains serve downtown Dallas, the airport station is near Gate A10 at Terminal A, and the ride to West End Station takes 50 minutes (12 stops). The Silver Line serves Terminal B but goes toward Addison, Richardson and Plano, not downtown Dallas. If your flight lands at Dallas Love Field instead, DART's route is the Orange Line to Inwood/Love Field Station and then a bus, which is a different airport and a different page.
When the train is the better choice
Take the Orange Line if you are alone, you have one bag, your hotel is near a downtown rail station and your flight lands at a civil hour. It runs for much of the day, avoids the freeways and costs a fraction of any road option. TEXRail from the Terminal B station is the equivalent for travellers heading toward Grapevine and Fort Worth's rail stops.
Be honest about the limits. At 50 minutes, the Orange Line is slower than a car off-peak. The stations are not always near your hotel, and DFW is a sprawling airport: the walk from a far gate to the Terminal A station adds time. Evening service is thinner, and rail does not reach most of the suburbs where many visitors are going.
When a pre-booked car wins
- You are going to a suburb. Las Colinas, Plano, Frisco, Southlake and Arlington are all poorly served by rail from the airport.
- You travel in a group. One Luxury SUV (up to six passengers, 5 to 6 large bags) or an Executive Sprinter (up to 12) replaces several rideshare cars.
- You land late. The chauffeur tracks the flight and waits. Free waiting is 60 minutes after international landings and 30 after domestic.
- You have a meeting. A booked pickup removes the guesswork in the pickup queue.
- You have children. Infant carriers, toddler seats and boosters are available; request them when you book.
- You value privacy. Chauffeurs never photograph clients or post about trips, and will sign an NDA on request.
How pickup works at DFW
DFW's ground transportation page says taxi service is on the lower level of Terminals A through E, with a guest assistant at the stands between 8 am and midnight and a request line after midnight. Pre-arranged cars also work from the lower level, and arrivals are met outside baggage claim.
Your confirmation says which terminal door to expect. On request, the chauffeur waits inside arrivals with a name board and can use an alias for privacy. See meet and greet.
If you plan to meet a friend instead, the airport's free cell phone lot at the north end of the airport allows up to two hours of waiting, and curbsides are for active loading only.
Departures are simpler. The chauffeur drops you at the upper-level curb of your terminal, which DFW designates for drop-off at every terminal, and curbsides are for active loading only, so the stop is brief. Plan to be at the curb two hours before a domestic flight and three before an international one, and add time at the start of the Thanksgiving and December holiday weeks, when the security lines at the largest terminals are at their longest.
Most international arrivals come through Terminal D. Passengers clear US immigration and customs before they reach the arrivals hall, and the wait varies a great deal with how many long-haul flights land together. That is why the included wait after an international landing is 60 minutes, counted from the actual landing time.
Where the car goes: distances from DFW
| Destination | Approx. distance | Off-peak | Weekday peak |
|---|---|---|---|
| Las Colinas / Irving | 8 mi / 13 km | 15 – 25 min | 30 – 50 min |
| Downtown Dallas | 17 mi / 27 km | 25 – 40 min | 50 – 90 min |
| Downtown Fort Worth | 20 mi / 32 km | 25 – 40 min | 50 – 80 min |
| Arlington (stadiums) | 19 mi / 31 km | 25 – 40 min | 50 – 90 min |
| Plano | 25 mi / 40 km | 30 – 45 min | 60 – 100 min |
| Frisco | 30 mi / 48 km | 35 – 50 min | 70 – 110 min |
These are planning figures, not guarantees. The chauffeur checks live traffic and selects the best routing on the day.
The roads around DFW
Dallas and Fort Worth are a freeway and tollway region. DFW's directions page says you enter from State Highway 183 on the south, or from State Highway 114 or Interstate 635 on the north, and that International Parkway runs through the airport past every terminal. From there the freeways and tollways spread toward Dallas, Fort Worth and the northern suburbs. The airport notes that tolls are included for authorised ground transportation such as limousines, so toll roads do not become an extra charge on your trip. Weekday evening peaks stretch for hours; Fridays are worse. Rain can slow the freeways quickly, and spring thunderstorms can also delay flights.
Big events change the traffic pattern: games at AT&T Stadium and Globe Life Field in Arlington, trade shows at the Dallas Market Center and concerts downtown. Tell us the venue when you book. The chauffeur plans the drop-off lane and an alternative if the main road is full.
Business travel through DFW
DFW is a major connecting hub, so many visitors have meetings in Las Colinas, at corporate campuses in Plano and Frisco, or in downtown Dallas and Fort Worth. For those trips, corporate accounts with monthly invoicing and multi-leg itineraries on one booking help: you can book a morning arrival, a midday move to a meeting and an evening return to the airport in a single reservation. Choosing your vehicle
| Class | Typical model | Passengers | Luggage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Executive Sedan | Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar | Up to 3 | 2 large + 2 cabin bags |
| First Class Sedan | Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar | Up to 3 | 2 large + 2 cabin bags |
| Luxury SUV | Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar | Up to 6 | 5–6 large bags |
| Executive Sprinter | Mercedes-Benz Sprinter | Up to 12 | Up to 12 bags |
Models are "or similar" and confirmed at booking. A Maybach, Rolls-Royce, stretch limousine or armoured vehicle can be arranged on request, with availability confirmed at booking. Water and phone charging are in most vehicles. See the fleet.
Booking and cancellation
The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay. Cancellation is counted from the scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours' notice is free; 72 hours or less is 10%; 48 hours or less is 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show is 100%. Major events and conventions sometimes have their own deadline; when they do, it appears on the confirmation.

Frequently asked questions
How far is DFW Airport from downtown Dallas?
Roughly 16 to 19 miles (26 to 30 km), depending on the measurement. The drive is typically 25 to 40 minutes off-peak and 50 to 90 minutes in the weekday evening peak. DART's Orange Line takes about 50 minutes to West End Station.
Is there a train from DFW to downtown Dallas?
Yes. DART's Orange Line serves the Terminal A station near Gate A10 and runs to downtown Dallas in about 50 minutes, according to DART. The Silver Line at Terminal B goes toward Plano, not downtown Dallas. TEXRail serves Terminal B toward Fort Worth.
How do I get from DFW to Fort Worth?
TEXRail runs from the Terminal B station toward Grapevine and Fort Worth. Check Trinity Metro's timetable for your day. For a hotel away from a rail stop, or for groups and luggage, a car service is the direct option at 25 to 40 minutes off-peak.
Where do limousines pick up at DFW?
Pre-arranged cars work from the lower level of each terminal, outside baggage claim. Your confirmation names the terminal door, and a name-board greeting inside arrivals is available on request.
Are airport limousines worth the expense in Dallas?
They are worth it for suburbs, groups, late arrivals and fixed appointments, where the alternative is a long rail ride plus a taxi or a rideshare queue. For a solo traveller to downtown with one bag, the Orange Line costs far less.
How much should I tip a limo driver in Dallas?
A tip of 15 to 20 per cent is the common range for a chauffeured trip in the United States. Check whether your booking already includes a gratuity, and add a little more for help with several large bags.
Can the car take me to AT&T Stadium or Globe Life Field?
Yes. Both are in Arlington, about 19 miles (31 km) from the airport. Tell us the event and the time so the chauffeur plans the approach and the drop-off, since roads around the venues close or slow before and after games.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
The chauffeur tracks your flight, so the pickup follows your actual landing time. After landing, 60 minutes of waiting are included for international arrivals and 30 minutes for domestic. The 24/7 desk advises on longer delays.
