Athens International Airport, Eleftherios Venizelos, was built at Spata, east of the city, and that geography shapes every decision about getting out of it. The centre is about 35 km (22 mi) away, Piraeus about 47 km (29 mi), and Rafina, the port for many island ferries, closer than either. The airport has a metro, a suburban train, 24-hour express buses and a posted flat taxi fare, so nobody is stranded. But the best Athens airport transfers depend on where you are going next: a hotel in Plaka, a ship in Piraeus, a ferry from Rafina or a villa on the Athenian Riviera. This guide covers all of those and shows how an Onroutz.ca private car fits.
How do you get from Athens Airport to your hotel in the city?
Take the metro or an express bus if you are travelling light and your hotel is near Syntagma or Monastiraki. Take a pre-booked private car when you have luggage, more than two people, a late arrival, or a hotel outside the centre. The car meets you at arrivals and takes you to the door for a fixed fare quoted before you pay.
Greece has one of the more transparent airport systems in the Mediterranean, and it is worth using when it fits. The airport publishes a flat taxi fare, the express buses run all night, and the metro is straightforward. What the public options cannot do is take you to a hotel on a steep street in Plaka, meet you inside arrivals with your name, wait if your flight lands late, or put six people and their luggage in one vehicle.
Athens airport to city: every option compared
Public figures below come from the airport, the Athens transport operator and the city's bus authority. They are written "as of 2026" where they come from an official site, and flat taxi fares can be revised.
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Metro Line 3 to Syntagma | About 55 – 75 min | Airport ticket fare on the Athens transport pages | Escalators and lifts, but crowded | Syntagma, Monastiraki, Evangelismos |
| Suburban railway (Proastiakos) to Piraeus | About 70 – 90 min | Airport ticket fare on the Athens transport pages | Trolleys on board | Piraeus port, if timed to a ship |
| Express bus X95 to Syntagma | About 70 – 90 min | Single fare €5.50 per OASA, as of 2026; runs 24 hours | Racks on board | Central hotels at any hour |
| Express bus X96 to Piraeus | About 100 – 120 min | Single fare €5.50 per OASA, as of 2026; runs 24 hours | Racks on board | Piraeus port at any hour |
| Taxi from the official rank | About 45 – 70 min | Flat fare to the inner ring of €50 by day and €65 at night, per Athens International Airport | Good | Spontaneous trips |
| Pre-booked private car | About 40 – 70 min | Fixed fare via booker | Everything in the boot | 3+ travellers, ferries and ships, late arrivals, hotels outside the centre |
The OASA bus authority estimates about 60 minutes on the X95 and about 90 on the X96, which count only the ride; add boarding and the walk at each end for the door-to-door figures above. Athens Transport lists the metro at around 40 minutes to Syntagma and the suburban railway at about an hour to Piraeus. Trains and buses are fine when your plan is simple, and OASA notes that passengers cannot get off on the way to the airport or board on the way from it, so the express lines are strictly point to point.
Which door to use: arrivals, taxis and the meeting point
Athens International Airport has a single terminal building with an arrivals level that leads straight to the transport options. The airport places its official taxi stand at Exit 3 of the Arrivals Level, available around the clock, and the flat fare is determined by the time of arrival at the destination and includes surcharges and extras. Express buses stop on the same level, and the Metro and suburban train are reached through the connecting walkway to the station.
For a booked car, you do not need to find any of this. The chauffeur tracks your flight, waits in arrivals, and on request holds a name board with your name or an alias for privacy. You walk with a trolley to the vehicle, and the baggage, driving and parking are handled for you.
Why Athens suits a private car better than most cities
Athens is a city of narrow, steep and often one-way streets. A hotel in Plaka, Monastiraki, Koukaki or Thissio can be a short walk from a metro station on the map and a ten-minute climb with a suitcase in reality. The distances are modest, but the last 300 metres are the hard part. A chauffeur knows which streets are permitted, where to stop, and where the hotel entrance actually is, and the fixed fare means you do not watch a meter in traffic.
The other factor is time. Flights from North America often land in the late afternoon or early evening, when the Attiki Odos motorway and the roads into the centre are busy. A 35 km trip that takes 40 minutes at midday can take well over an hour in traffic. A car is not faster than the metro on a clear day, but it is more predictable when the roads are slow and the platforms are full.
Athens airport to Piraeus port transfer and cruise connections
Piraeus is the main port for cruise ships and many ferries, about 47 km (29 mi) from the airport. The suburban railway, the X96 express bus and the metro (via a change at Monastiraki) all reach it, but timing matters. A cruise embarkation window is fixed, and a ship waits for nobody. A booked car gives you a pickup tied to your landing time, a drive of roughly 50 – 80 minutes depending on traffic, and a drop at the terminal gate for your ship.
Rafina, the port on Attica's east coast used for ferries to Andros, Tinos and Mykonos, is much closer to the airport, roughly 25 km (16 mi). Lavrio, in the south-east, serves some ferries and yachts. For an island connection, the key is the departure time on your ticket: schedules vary by season, and ferries can leave early. Give us your sailing and we plan the pickup backwards from it. Hotel guests in the city can also look at our Athens hotel transfers page.
Typical distances and drive times:
- Syntagma Square and Plaka: about 35 km (22 mi), 40 – 70 min.
- Glyfada and the Athenian Riviera: about 40 – 45 km (25 – 28 mi), 45 – 75 min.
- Piraeus port: about 47 km (29 mi), 50 – 80 min.
- Rafina port: about 25 km (16 mi), 25 – 40 min.
- Cape Sounion: about 70 km (43 mi), 1 h 15 – 1 h 40.
How an Onroutz.ca Athens airport transfer works
Onroutz.ca is a Toronto-based desk. In Greece the driving is done by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner, while Toronto books, confirms, supports and invoices the trip, giving you one confirmation, one invoice and one 24/7 contact. Partner cars are no older than four model years (seven for Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach). We do not own cars or offices in Greece.
- Book. Give us your flight number, hotel or port, passenger count and luggage.
- Review the fare. The booker prints one fixed all-in figure for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle, and you pay only after seeing it.
- Get the confirmation with the chauffeur's name and the meeting point.
- Land. The first 60 minutes of waiting after an international arrival are free, 30 after domestic, and 15 on other pickups.
- Ride. Most vehicles have water on board and somewhere to charge a phone.
The classes are Executive Sedan (E-Class, Cadillac or similar; up to 3 passengers, 2 large plus 2 cabin bags), First Class Sedan (S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar; up to 3), Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar; up to 6 with 5 – 6 large bags) and Executive Sprinter (up to 12 passengers and 12 bags). Each is "or similar", and the model is confirmed at booking. See the fleet.
Entry rules for visitors arriving in Athens
Greece is in the Schengen area. The Government of Canada says Canadians do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period within the Schengen area, and passports must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure. The EU's Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026, collecting a facial image and fingerprints from non-EU visitors; you do not apply in advance. ETIAS is scheduled to begin in the last quarter of 2026 with the exact date to be announced.
If you are connecting from Turkey or the UK, remember those countries have their own rules. Our Europe hub and Istanbul Airport transfer page cover the Turkish side.
Planning a week in Athens and the islands
Many travellers pair Athens with a cruise or an island week. For Rome and the Italian ports, our Rome Fiumicino airport page and Civitavecchia cruise transfers show comparable timing. The hotel transfers hub lists city options, and the airport transfers hub lists every airport we cover. Meeting a guest at the gate? The airport meet and greet service puts a name board inside arrivals.
Discretion is part of the job: chauffeurs never photograph clients or post about trips, and NDAs are available. Onroutz.ca is a transport service rather than a security company, so there are no armed drivers or bodyguards; the desk coordinates with a client's own security team when one travels.

How long is the bus from Athens Airport to the centre?
The X95 express to Syntagma Square takes about 60 minutes according to OASA, and the X96 to Piraeus about 90. Both run 24 hours, and the full single fare is €5.50. They are point to point, so you cannot board mid-route on the way out.
How do I get from Athens Airport to Piraeus port?
By X96 bus, suburban railway or metro with a change, or by car. The port is about 47 km (29 mi) away, and a car takes roughly 50 – 80 minutes. For a cruise embarkation, a booked car timed to your landing is the safest choice.
Can you take us from the airport to Rafina for the ferry?
Yes. Rafina is roughly 25 km (16 mi) from the airport, about 25 – 40 minutes by car. Send us your ferry departure, and we plan the pickup backwards from the sailing time. Check-in windows vary by operator, so confirm yours.
What if my flight arrives late?
Yes. We track the flight and hold the car for 60 minutes after an international landing, 30 after a domestic one and 15 on other pickups, at no charge. If you are held up further, call the 24/7 desk.
Can I get a child seat for the transfer?
Yes. Ask for a child, toddler or booster seat when you book, and give the ages and weights. Pick a vehicle with room for people and seats together.
Do you operate in Greece with your own cars?
No. The ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner, while the Toronto desk books, confirms, supports and invoices the trip. You deal with one team and one invoice.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancel more than 72 hours before pickup and nothing is charged. Within 72 hours the fee is 10%, within 48 hours 50%, and within 24 hours or on a no-show 100%, always counted from the scheduled pickup. If a big event applies, the confirmation will show a different deadline.
