Hanoi's airport is a modern gateway to an old city, and the stretch between them has its own character. A long expressway crosses the Red River on the Nhat Tan Bridge, then the road narrows into the dense grid of the Old Quarter, where most hotels have no kerb space to speak of. A Hanoi airport transfer therefore has two parts: the highway run of about 30 km (19 mi), and the last few hundred metres, which is where local knowledge counts. This page compares the buses, taxis and a booked private car, explains what to watch for when you land, and shows when a pre-arranged ride is simply easier.

Check your fixed fare

What is the best way to get from Noi Bai Airport to central Hanoi?

The airport bus is the cheapest way into the city and suits a solo traveller with one bag. A taxi or ride-hailing car is quicker and takes you closer to the hotel. For three or more people, children, heavy luggage, a night arrival or a hotel in a narrow Old Quarter lane, a pre-booked private car gives a fixed fare and a driver waiting at arrivals.

Noi Bai is Hanoi's only commercial airport and sits about 30 km (19 mi) north of the centre. In light traffic a car covers that distance in under 45 minutes. Weekday evenings, heavy rain and public holidays can push it toward 90 minutes, which is why a private transfer built around your flight's real landing time is useful.

The terminals matter for pickups. Terminal 2 handles international arrivals, and Terminal 1 handles domestic flights, with a free shuttle between them. Your confirmation names the correct terminal and meeting point.

The airport bus: when it works

Bus 86 connects the airport to the Old Quarter and Hanoi Railway Station, passing over the Nhat Tan Bridge. It is the sensible budget option when you are by yourself, carrying one bag, and have a hotel near the bus's central stops. You buy the ticket on board, usually in cash. Luggage space is limited, and you will walk or take a taxi from the last stop. For a family or a group with large bags, the bus becomes the harder choice quickly, because boarding, stowing and walking the last stretch all take time.

Taxis and scams at Noi Bai: what the Government of Canada warns

Official taxis are generally considered safe, according to the Government of Canada, which advises using official taxis or a trusted ridesharing app, agreeing a fare in advance or insisting on the meter, and confirming the driver's identity and licence plate before getting in. It singles out Noi Bai specifically: fake taxi drivers there have forced travellers to withdraw cash from ATMs, and the advice is to arrange your pickup with your hotel in advance.

That is a good reason to book a transfer before you fly. The chauffeur's name and vehicle details arrive in your confirmation, the fare is settled in the booker, and there is nobody to negotiate with in the arrivals hall. Motorcycle taxis, called xe om, are not recommended by the same advisory.

Drive times to the main Hanoi hotel districts

These are typical daytime ranges, and the evening peak adds time.

  • Tay Ho and West Lake: about 35 – 50 minutes. This is the closest side of the city to the Nhat Tan Bridge.
  • Hoan Kiem Lake, the Old Quarter and the French Quarter: about 40 – 60 minutes. Streets near the lake have one-way restrictions, and some Old Quarter lanes are pedestrian-only at weekends, so the drop-off may be at the nearest access point.
  • Ba Dinh and the government area: about 40 – 60 minutes.
  • Hai Ba Trung and the south: about 50 – 75 minutes.
  • Long Bien and Gia Lam, east of the river: often quicker than the centre.

Hanoi's roads are shared by a large number of motorbikes, and the Government of Canada rates road safety in Vietnam as poor, recommending that visitors consider hiring a driver. A chauffeur with a car and a clear route is the straightforward answer.

Rain, holidays and the evening peak

Three conditions change a Hanoi arrival more than distance does. Heavy rain slows the expressway and floods low sections of city streets. The week around Tet, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, sees large movements of people between Hanoi and the provinces, and public holidays generally lengthen trips. And on any weekday the late afternoon and early evening bring the densest traffic into the centre. If your flight lands in one of those windows, mention it in the booking notes and allow extra time before a dinner reservation or a meeting. The chauffeur tracks the flight, not the schedule, so a late landing still finds the car waiting.

Meeting your driver at Noi Bai

International arrivals go through immigration, collect bags, and exit through the public hall of Terminal 2. Immigration can take under 15 minutes or well over an hour, depending on how many flights land together. Your chauffeur waits regardless, because the flight is tracked and the pickup follows the real landing time.

On request the chauffeur holds a name board inside arrivals, with an alias name if you prefer privacy. After an international landing you have 60 minutes of free waiting, 30 after a domestic landing and 15 on other pickups.

Entry rules for Vietnam

Canadian passport holders need a visa for Vietnam. The Government of Canada says Canadians may apply online for a single- or multiple-entry tourist e-visa valid for up to 90 days, and the application must match the passport exactly. Passports should be valid for at least six months beyond the date you expect to leave. Authorities require you to report your presence on arrival, and hotels usually do this for you. Declare cash over 15 million dong or US$5,000.

Some nationalities have a time-limited visa exemption, but Canada and the United States are not among them, so check the official e-visa portal and your own passport's rules. Apply well ahead of departure.

Hanoi and onward travel

Many visitors continue from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay, about 150 – 170 km (95 – 105 mi) east, which typically takes 2 h 30 – 3 h 30 by road, or south to Ninh Binh, around 100 km (62 mi) and a drive of roughly two hours. Both work as a day with a driver or a one-way transfer, and the desk can combine them with the airport run on one booking. For the southern leg of a Vietnam trip, see Ho Chi Minh City, and for Thailand Bangkok Suvarnabhumi.

How an Onroutz.ca Hanoi transfer is arranged

The booking lives with the Toronto desk. In Vietnam a vetted, licensed and commercially insured partner provides the car and driver, while Toronto confirms, supports and invoices, giving you a single confirmation, a single invoice and a 24/7 contact. Partner cars are no more than four model years old, and Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach up to seven. There are no Onroutz.ca-owned vehicles or offices in Vietnam.

  1. Book with the flight number, hotel and passenger count.
  2. Check the fixed all-in fare before you pay.
  3. Read the confirmation, which carries the chauffeur's details.
  4. Land and find your driver at the arrivals meeting point.

Vehicles for a Hanoi arrival

Hanoi's narrow streets and the Old Quarter's one-way lanes favour a vehicle that fits the party without being oversized.

  • Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar): up to three passengers, two large and two cabin bags.
  • First Class Sedan (S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar): up to three passengers.
  • Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar): six people, five or six large bags.
  • Executive Sprinter: twelve passengers, twelve bags.

The specific model is "or similar" and confirmed at booking. Coaches of 20 to 56 seats, A Maybach, Rolls-Royce, stretch limousine or armoured vehicle can be arranged on request, with availability confirmed at booking. Request child, toddler or booster seats when you book. Most vehicles have water and phone charging. See the fleet.

More Asia routes on one booking

The Asia-Pacific hub lists every airport and route we book in the region, and the airport transfers hub lists airports worldwide. If you are arriving to a meeting, see airport meet and greet, and for a driver for the day, the personal driver service. How private airport transfers work explains each step, and airport transfers versus taxis and rideshares sets the options side by side.

Drivers do not take photographs of clients or post about journeys, and NDAs can be arranged. Onroutz.ca provides transport, not security: there are no armed drivers or bodyguards, and the desk coordinates with a client's own security team where there is one.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Noi Bai Airport from central Hanoi?

About 30 km (19 mi) north of the centre. By car it usually takes 40 – 60 minutes, and longer in evening rush hour, heavy rain or around public holidays.

How do I get from Hanoi Airport to the Old Quarter?

By express bus 86, by taxi, by ride-hailing or by a pre-booked private car. The car takes you closest to the hotel, and the chauffeur knows where the nearest vehicle access is for narrow lanes.

Are there fake taxis at Hanoi Airport?

The Government of Canada warns that fake taxi drivers at Noi Bai have forced travellers to withdraw cash from ATMs, and advises arranging a pickup with your hotel in advance. A pre-booked car with confirmed driver details avoids the risk.

How much is the bus from Hanoi Airport?

Bus 86 charges a low fixed fare, paid on board, and it changes from time to time. For our own price, the booker shows a fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup and drop-off before you pay.

Which terminal do international flights use in Hanoi?

International flights use Terminal 2, and domestic flights use Terminal 1. A free shuttle runs between them, and your confirmation names the terminal and meeting point for your flight.

Do Canadians need a visa for Vietnam?

Yes. The Government of Canada says Canadians can apply online for a single- or multiple-entry tourist e-visa valid for up to 90 days. Apply through the official portal and make sure every detail matches your passport.

Can you take us from Hanoi Airport to Ha Long Bay?

Yes. Ha Long is about 150 – 170 km (95 – 105 mi) from Hanoi, usually 2 h 30 – 3 h 30. The transfer can be a one-way booking or part of a longer itinerary with your hotel stays.

Is waiting time included if my plane is late into Hanoi?

Yes. The flight is followed and the driver waits 60 minutes after an international landing, 30 after a domestic one and 15 on other pickups, at no extra cost. The desk never closes.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you give more than 72 hours' notice, nothing is charged. Within 72 hours the fee is 10%, within 48 hours 50%, and within 24 hours, or for a no-show, 100%, measured from the scheduled pickup. A large event may come with a different deadline, and the confirmation prints it.
