Barcelona-El Prat is a compact, well-served airport, which makes an airport transfer from Barcelona airport a decision about convenience rather than necessity. The metro, the Aerobús and the taxi rank all work. What a pre-booked car adds is a driver who knows your flight, a vehicle that waits if immigration is slow, and a drop-off at the exact street rather than the nearest station. For a family with young children, a group going on to the Costa Dorada, or a traveller boarding a cruise at the port, those details decide the day. Below are the real options, the real timings, and how an Onroutz.ca Barcelona booking works.
What is the best airport transfer from Barcelona airport to the city?
For one or two people with light bags and a hotel near a metro stop or Plaça Catalunya, the Aerobús or the L9 Sud metro is efficient. For groups, families, heavy luggage, a late arrival, a cruise connection or a resort outside the city, a pre-booked private car gives a fixed fare, a flight-tracked pickup and a drop at your door.
There is no single best answer for every traveller, and any guide that insists otherwise is selling something. Barcelona's public transport is good. The airport is also small enough that a taxi is rarely a long wait. A private car earns its place when the problem is not getting to the city but dealing with what comes with the trip: luggage, children, a ship to catch, a villa in Sitges or a hotel on the Passeig de Gràcia where the last stretch matters.

Public fares change, so check the Aerobús, TMB and AMB pages for current prices. Barcelona's official taxi is black and yellow, and Aena points visitors to the Metropolitan Taxi Institute's site for tariffs.
Public transport wins when you are travelling alone, staying near the Plaça Catalunya or the Plaça d'Espanya, and carrying one bag. The Aerobús runs around the clock, 365 days a year, and the airport has a free 24-hour shuttle between terminals. If that describes you, the bus is a reasonable option.
Two terminals: T1, T2 and where to meet your chauffeur
El Prat has Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and Terminal 2 is divided into T2A, T2B and T2C. Your airline decides which building you use, and your booking shows which. Metro L9 Sud has a station at T1 ("Aeroport T1") and serves T2, and the R2 Nord train stops at T2 only. Aena runs a 24-hour terminal shuttle between the two buildings, which matters if you land in one and a friend lands in the other.
Taxi ranks are straightforward: at T1, they are on the ground floor opposite arrivals, and at T2 they sit opposite the T2A, T2B and T2C arrivals. Aena lists a chauffeur-driven vehicle meeting point on Floor -1 of the T1 car park. With us, you do not have to find any of this: the chauffeur tracks your flight, meets you inside arrivals on request with a name board, and walks you to the car. An alias name can be used on the board for privacy.
A note on petty theft and why it matters at the airport
The Government of Canada says petty theft is common in crowded areas of Barcelona and names El Prat airport, including the Aerobús shuttle, among the hotspots, alongside Las Ramblas, Passeig de Gràcia, Plaça de Catalunya, Park Güell and the Sagrada Família. It adds that plainclothes impostors may ask to see your passport or wallet. The practical point is not alarm; it is that a door-to-door transfer removes the most exposed moments, the crowded platform and the bus stop with a suitcase. You step from the arrivals hall to a car whose chauffeur you have already seen in the confirmation.
When a private car from Barcelona airport is the better call
- Cruise connections. The cruise terminals at the Port of Barcelona are about 18 km (11 mi) from the airport, typically 25 – 45 minutes by car. Embarkation windows are tight and luggage is heavy; a booked car timed to your landing is simpler than a metro and a taxi queue at the port.
- Resorts and villas. Sitges, Castelldefels, the Costa Brava and the Costa Dorada are poorly served by direct public transport from the airport.
- Groups and families. An Executive Sprinter seats up to 12 passengers with 12 bags, a Luxury SUV up to 6 with 5 – 6 large bags.
- Late arrivals. The Aerobús runs 24 hours, but after midnight a flight-tracked pickup is calmer.
- Business schedules. A fixed pickup removes the variable of a taxi queue.
- Child seats. Baby, toddler and booster seats can be requested when you book.
Distances and drive times from Barcelona airport
- Plaça Catalunya and the Gothic Quarter: about 14 km (9 mi), 25 – 45 min.
- Sagrada Família and the Eixample: about 17 km (11 mi), 25 – 50 min.
- Port of Barcelona cruise terminals: about 18 km (11 mi), 25 – 45 min.
- Sitges: about 35 km (22 mi), 30 – 50 min.
- Montserrat: about 65 km (40 mi), 55 – 80 min.
- Girona: about 100 km (62 mi), 1 h 05 – 1 h 30.
- Salou and PortAventura: about 105 km (65 mi), 1 h 05 – 1 h 30.
The Ronda Litoral, the Gran Via and the C-31 slow noticeably on weekday mornings and Friday evenings, and the road to the Costa Dorada gets heavy at the start of summer weekends. Events such as the Mobile World Congress in late February or early March, and large concerts, can add congestion; if your trip coincides with a major event, tell us so the pickup is padded.
How your Onroutz.ca Barcelona airport transfer works
Onroutz.ca is a Toronto-based desk. In Spain a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner does the driving; the Toronto desk books, confirms, supports and invoices it, so everything sits in one booking with a single 24/7 contact. The partner's vehicles are no more than four model years old, and Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach may be up to seven. We do not own cars or offices in Spain.
- Book with your flight number, destination and passenger count.
- Review the all-in fixed fare before you pay.
- Receive the confirmation with chauffeur details and the meeting point.
- Land. Free waiting is 60 minutes after an international landing, 30 after domestic and 15 on other pickups.
- Ride. Water and phone charging are in most cars.
A multi-leg itinerary, such as airport to hotel, a day trip to Montserrat and the return, can sit on one booking, and corporate accounts invoice monthly. The classes are Executive Sedan (E-Class, Cadillac or similar), First Class Sedan (S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar), Luxury SUV (Escalade, Yukon Denali, Suburban or similar) and Executive Sprinter; models are "or similar" and confirmed at booking. See the fleet.
Entry rules for visitors arriving in Spain
Spain is in the Schengen area. The Government of Canada says visa-free travel applies to stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the date you expect to leave the Schengen area. The Entry/Exit System has been fully operational across Schengen since 10 April 2026 and records a facial image and fingerprints; you do not take action in advance. ETIAS is scheduled for the last quarter of 2026, with the exact start date to be announced.
Barcelona as part of a bigger European trip
Barcelona is a common start or finish for a Mediterranean cruise or a tour of Iberia. See the Lisbon airport transfer page for the Portuguese leg, Paris Charles de Gaulle and the wider Europe private transfer hub for onward connections, the airport transfers hub for every gateway, and the cruise transfers hub with Civitavecchia if your voyage ends in Italy. How private airport transfers work explains the booking steps, and an executive car service covers hourly hire. For comparisons among taxi, app and booked car, see airport transfers versus taxis and rideshares.
Chauffeurs do not photograph clients or post about trips, and NDAs can be arranged. We are a transport service, not a security company: no armed drivers or bodyguards, and the desk works with a client's own security team where there is one.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get from Barcelona airport to the city center?
By Aerobús A1 or A2 to Plaça Catalunya, Metro L9 Sud, Rodalies R2 Nord from T2, a taxi, or a pre-booked private car. The centre is about 14 km (9 mi) away, and a car takes roughly 25 – 50 minutes depending on traffic.
Where are the taxis at Barcelona airport?
At Terminal 1, the ranks are on the ground floor opposite arrivals, and at Terminal 2 opposite the T2A, T2B and T2C arrivals. The official taxi is black and yellow. A pre-booked car avoids the queue.
Is there a metro from Barcelona airport?
Yes. Line 9 Sud serves both terminals, with a station called "Aeroport T1" at Terminal 1. A free 24-hour shuttle connects the terminals. The metro suits light luggage and a short walk at the other end, less so for large bags.
How much is a taxi from Barcelona airport to the center?
Taxis are metered, with a supplement for the airport. The Metropolitan Taxi Institute's site has a fare calculator, and Aena points visitors there. If you prefer to know the total in advance, the Onroutz.ca booker shows a fixed fare.
Does the Aerobús run at night?
Aerobús states that it runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with stops at both terminals. Check its schedule for the current frequency. After a late flight, many travellers still prefer a booked car with a flight-tracked pickup.
Can you take us from Barcelona airport to Salou or PortAventura?
Yes. Salou is about 105 km (65 mi), roughly 1 h 05 – 1 h 30. Barcelona airport is not Reus airport, which has its own transfers; if you are flying into Reus, tell us when you book. Parties of up to 12 can take the Executive Sprinter.
Can I get to the cruise port directly from the airport?
Yes. The port is about 18 km (11 mi) away, a 25 – 45 minute drive. Give us the ship, the terminal and the embarkation time, and we plan the pickup so that you arrive within the window.
Does the chauffeur wait if the flight is late?
Yes. The flight is followed, and the car waits 60 minutes after an international landing, 30 after a domestic one and 15 on other pickups at no extra charge. The 24/7 desk can shift the time if you need it.
What is your cancellation policy?
There is no charge for cancelling more than 72 hours ahead. At 72 hours or less you pay 10%, at 48 hours or less 50%, and at 24 hours or less or for a no-show 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup. Large events may have their own deadline, printed on the confirmation.
