Private Driver in Bali: A Car, a Driver and a Day Plan That Fits the Roads

Bali is small on the map and slow on the road. A private driver turns that into an advantage: one vehicle, one local who knows the lanes, and a schedule built around temples, tides and traffic rather than a tour bus timetable.

What is a private driver in Bali, and how does it work?

A private driver in Bali is a licensed local driver with a car, booked by the hour or the day for your own itinerary. You set the pickup, the stops and the pace. The driver handles the lanes, parking and timing. Onroutz.ca books, confirms and supports the hire from Toronto, with the fixed fare shown before you pay.

Most visitors to Bali have the same problem. The places worth seeing, such as the rice terraces north of Ubud, the clifftop temples of the south, the shrine on the western rocks and the harbours for the offshore islands, are spread across an island with one chronically congested corridor and few direct roads. Public transport for tourists is thin. Taxis are sold by the trip, which makes a day of sightseeing a series of negotiations.

A private driver replaces that with one arrangement. This page explains how the hire works, which day plans are realistic, what you should confirm before you book, and where a private driver stops being the right tool.

Why a driver rather than a scooter or a self-drive car

Traffic in Bali drives on the left, scooters travel in every gap, and a drive of 30 km can take two hours. Streets in Ubud and Seminyak are narrow, signs are few, and parking at popular temples fills early. Foreign visitors who rent a scooter or a car must also hold the right licence for Indonesia and carry the right insurance; check with the rental company and your own insurer, not with a friendly stranger on the street.

A driver removes the navigation, the parking and the licence question. It also changes how the day feels. You sit in the back with air conditioning and cold water, you look at the scenery instead of the road, and you step out directly at the entrance. For families and groups, the driver waits with the car while you visit.

None of this makes a driver the right choice for every traveller. A solo visitor staying in one area for a week, who only needs a ride to dinner, will usually be happy with taxis or apps. The driver wins on full-day itineraries, group travel, early starts and anyone who wants certainty.

Four day plans that work on Bali's roads

These sample plans show realistic loops. Distances are estimates, shown as "about", and times depend on the hour.

Day planTypical startApprox. distance and driveWhat it coversBest for
Ubud and the rice countrySeminyak or Ubud, 8 amAbout 27 km one way from Seminyak to Ubud, 1 to 1.5 hMarkets, palace, rice terraces, a craft village on the way backFirst-timers, photographers
South coast and UluwatuSeminyak or Nusa Dua, 1 pmAbout 35 km, 1 to 1.5 hClifftop temple, beaches, sunsetLate-start travellers
West coast and the sea templeSeminyak, 3 pmAbout 15 km, 30 to 60 minSea temple at low tide, sunset, dinner back in SeminyakShort afternoon
Offshore island dayHotel, 6 amHarbour on the east coast, then a boatFast-boat connection to the islandsActive travellers

The Ubud loop, the south coast and the sea temple can be combined into a two- or three-day plan with a single driver. The island day depends on the boat operator, whose timetable and sea conditions decide the day. Ask the booker which harbour and ferry or boat times your plan requires. If a boat is cancelled for weather, the driver waits or changes the plan.

Hourly hire or full-day hire

Private-driver bookings come in two shapes. A day booking sets a start time, an end time and a general route; the driver stays with you across the day. An hourly booking suits shorter errands: a lunch in the hills, a dinner and return, or a morning of shopping.

Before you confirm, settle five points with the desk:

  1. Hours and overtime. The booking states the agreed block of hours. Say if you expect to run past the end time.
  2. Route. List the places you want, in the order you prefer. The driver will tell you what is realistic.
  3. Vehicle class. A sedan for two or three, an SUV for up to six with bags, a Sprinter for up to twelve.
  4. Tolls, parking and entry tickets. The booking confirmation lists what the fare includes. Temple and site entry fees are paid at the entrance.
  5. Language and preferences. If you want a driver with a particular language, or you want to stop for a long lunch, say so.

The booker shows a fixed all-in fare for the pickup, drop-off and vehicle you choose before you pay, and hourly blocks appear the same way. We do not publish rates on this page.

Comparing the options for a day of sightseeing

Be honest: a group tour bus is cheaper per person for a standard route. A private driver is better when you value time, privacy and flexibility more than the lowest cost.

Temples, dress and etiquette

Several of the sights on a typical itinerary are working temples. Visitors are expected to dress modestly, and many temples ask you to wear a sarong and sash, which are lent or rented at the entrance. Cover your shoulders, avoid revealing clothing and follow the signs. Remember that ceremonies take priority over visitors, and a procession on a village road can pause traffic for several minutes.

Your driver will explain where to wait, when to remove shoes and how to pass a ceremony politely. On major festival days, some sites close to visitors and roads fill with processions. Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, usually falls in March or early April, and the whole island pauses for a day; check the calendar if your trip overlaps.

Pairing a private driver with your airport arrival

Many visitors book the airport pickup and a first-day tour together. You land, meet the driver at arrivals and are driven to your villa. The next morning the same driver or the same agency collects you for the first outing. Details of the arrival run are in Bali airport to Seminyak and Bali airport to Ubud, and the Bali Denpasar airport guide covers terminals and arrival steps.

Flight information for Ngurah Rai is published by the operator, InJourney Airports, and your driver watches the same flight. Before you land, remember the arrival formalities. Foreign visitors pay a tourist levy of IDR 150,000 per person through the official Love Bali site, receive a QR voucher by email, and must have a passport valid for at least 6 months after departure, according to that site. The e-Visa on Arrival application and the list of eligible countries are linked from Indonesia's immigration website.

Choosing where the day starts and ends

A driver covers more ground when the day starts in the right place. If your villa is in Ubud, the northern and central sights are close, and the south coast is a long day. If you are based in the Seminyak area, the west coast and the south are short drives and the hills are a longer one. Tell the desk where you sleep and where you want to be by evening, and ask for the plan that avoids crossing the island twice.

Some travellers prefer to change base halfway through their stay. The driver can take you and your luggage from one property to the next, with a morning of sightseeing on the way, which turns a hotel change into part of the itinerary.

Seasons, weather and when to go

Bali has a drier period and a wetter period, roughly April to October and November to March, though showers can arrive any time. The dry season is busier, so traffic and crowds at popular sites are heavier, especially around school holidays in other countries. The wet season brings green terraces, quieter sights and sudden downpours that slow roads and close low crossings.

Start early. A 7 or 8 am start gets you to the rice terraces and the big temples before the tour buses arrive, and it gets you back before the afternoon rush. Plan sunset stops at coastal temples for the end of the day and book dinner nearby, not across the island.

Families, groups and special occasions

Child seats come in infant, toddler and booster sizes and can be added to the booking. A family of five with luggage fits a Luxury SUV (up to 6 passengers, 5 to 6 large bags), and a group of up to 12 fits an Executive Sprinter. Mini-coaches and coaches of 20 to 56 seats are available on request for weddings, retreats and corporate groups, with availability confirmed at booking.

Wedding parties often combine several vehicles. A multi-leg itinerary can sit on one booking: airport, hotel, ceremony, reception and return. Corporate accounts are invoiced monthly. The fleet page describes the vehicle classes.

How Onroutz.ca delivers the service in Bali

For Bali hires, the vehicle and driver come from a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local partner. The Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto books the day, confirms it, supports you 24/7 and sends one invoice. The partner's cars are four model years old or newer.

Discretion is standard: drivers do not photograph clients or post about trips, and NDAs are available on request. For related services see the services hub and the meet and greet page, and for the rest of the region the Asia-Pacific guide and the transfers hub.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a private driver cost in Bali?

It depends on the vehicle, the hours, the route and the season. We do not publish rates. The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay, and an hourly or daily block is quoted the same way.

Is a private driver better than a taxi or app in Bali?

For a single trip, a taxi or app works. For a full day with several stops, a private driver is simpler: the car waits, the route is yours, and you do not rebook at each temple. For families and groups it is usually the more comfortable choice.

Can I rent a scooter instead?

Many visitors do, but the roads are crowded and left-hand traffic is unfamiliar to most. You need a valid licence for Indonesia and proper insurance. If you are unsure, a driver removes the risk and the paperwork.

What should I wear to visit Bali temples?

Dress modestly with covered shoulders and knees. Many temples require a sarong and sash, available at the entrance. Follow the signs and the driver's advice, and give ceremonies space.

Can the driver wait while I visit a site or have lunch?

Yes. That is the point of a day hire. The driver waits with the car, and you agree the meeting time at each stop. Entry tickets and meals are paid separately unless the confirmation says otherwise.

Can I book a driver from the airport for the whole stay?

Yes. Multi-leg itineraries can sit on one booking: airport arrival, day tours and departure. Availability of a specific driver on each day is confirmed by the desk.

What should I arrange before I land in Bali?

Pay the foreign-visitor levy of IDR 150,000 on the official Love Bali site, check whether your passport needs a visa, and have a passport valid for at least 6 months after departure. Tell the desk your flight number so the driver can meet you.

Are child seats available?

Yes. Infant carriers, toddler seats and boosters are available; request them when you book. Give the children's ages so the right seat is fitted, and mention a stroller so the vehicle has the space.
