Car service from Phoenix airport: why the Valley is different
Phoenix does not have a centre; it has a Valley. Sky Harbor sits roughly 3 miles east of downtown Phoenix, and the places visitors actually stay (Old Town Scottsdale, the Biltmore, Tempe, the resorts at the base of Camelback Mountain, north Scottsdale) are spread in several directions, each 10 to 40 km away. Distances look short on a map and are long in a car, and none of them is served well by rail.
A pre-booked car service from Phoenix airport therefore matters more here than in a compact city. Onroutz.ca books, confirms and invoices the transfer from Toronto; a vetted, licensed and commercially insured Arizona partner drives it. This page covers Sky Harbor's two terminals and its Sky Train, drive times to the Valley's main hubs, golf-season and spring-training timing, and when light rail or a ride app is enough.
How do I get from Sky Harbor airport to Scottsdale?
By car. Old Town Scottsdale is about 17 km (10 to 11 mi) from the airport, usually 20 to 30 minutes, longer at weekday peaks. There is no direct rail to Scottsdale: light rail runs through Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa, so most visitors use a private car, taxi or ride app.
Two terminals and a free train
PHX has two active terminals: Terminal 3, with 27 gates, and Terminal 4, with 92. Terminals 1 and 2 have been retired. The free PHX Sky Train links Terminal 3 and Terminal 4 with the 44th Street station, 24th Street, East Economy parking and the Rental Car Center, and runs 24 hours a day. The airport's Sky Train page puts typical waits at about three and a half to seven minutes between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m.
Flying in from Toronto
A direct flight from Toronto Pearson can be a domestic arrival in Phoenix. Pearson is one of ten Canadian airports with U.S. preclearance, and a pre-cleared passenger has completed the CBP inspection before departure. CBP's preclearance page lists the airports. Arizona stays on Mountain Standard Time all year, so the time difference with Toronto is three hours in summer and two in winter.
Phoenix airport transportation compared
PHX has a rich set of options for the Phoenix side of the Valley and thin ones for Scottsdale. The comparison reflects that.
| Mode | Door-to-door to Old Town Scottsdale | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private car (Onroutz.ca) | 20–30 min; 45–60 min at peak | Fixed fare via booker | Whole luggage, door to door | Resort stays, groups, golf trips, late arrivals |
| Taxi | 20–35 min | Metered | Boot or van | Spontaneous solo trips |
| Ride app or Waymo | 20–40 min | Surge-priced or app-set | Standard car space | Couples with two bags |
| Sky Train plus light rail | 45–75 min to Tempe or downtown only | Valley Metro fare | You carry it | Tempe, ASU or downtown Phoenix |
| Valley Metro bus (Routes 13 and 44) | 60–90+ min | Valley Metro fare | You carry it | Local connections |
| Resort or hotel shuttle | Varies | Per hotel | Per hotel | Resort stays that include it |
Light rail through the 44th Street station
The airport's 44th Street station connects directly to Valley Metro Rail, with an escalator and elevator to the Sky Train. That is a legitimate way to reach downtown Phoenix, Tempe or Mesa. The airport's public transportation page also lists Route 13, which stops at the 24th Street Sky Train station, and Route 44, which connects at 44th Street. The train does not go to Scottsdale. If you are carrying golf clubs, the two-step trip (Sky Train, then light rail) is a heavy one.
Ride apps and Waymo
Ride-app pickup is on the south outer curb at Terminal 3 and at Level 1 outer curbs at Terminal 4, plus the 24th Street and 44th Street Sky Train stations. Autonomous Waymo vehicles also pick up at the Terminal 3 and Terminal 4 curbs and at those stations, 24 hours a day, according to the airport's ride-share page. The airport says about 800 permitted ground transportation companies serve Sky Harbor, which is why the safest approach is to book a named service in advance.
When light rail or the Sky Train is the right choice
If you are one traveller with one bag, staying in Tempe or near downtown, light rail is clean, air-conditioned and well suited to a quiet-time arrival. If your hotel is on the line, we will tell you to take it.
A private car is the better choice when:
- Your base is Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, the Biltmore or north of the 101 Loop
- You are travelling with golf bags or a large group
- The temperature is a factor: Phoenix summers are hot, and a cool car at the door beats a platform wait
- You arrive late, when you do not want to rely on a connection
- Children are with you and you want to avoid changing modes with a stroller
Drive times from Phoenix Sky Harbor
The Valley is big, flat and grid-like, which helps, but the freeways (SR 143, the Loop 202, the Loop 101 and I-10) get heavy from about 6:30 to 9 a.m. and 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.
| Destination | Road distance | Typical drive time | Peak caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown Phoenix | about 8 km / 5 mi | 10–20 min | 25–35 min on event nights |
| Tempe and Arizona State University | about 8 km / 5 mi | 12–25 min | Heavier on game days |
| Biltmore and Camelback Corridor | about 14 km / 9 mi | 15–30 min | 30–45 min at 4–6 p.m. |
| Old Town Scottsdale | about 17 km / 10.5 mi | 20–30 min | 40–55 min on weekday evenings |
| North Scottsdale and Kierland | about 40 km / 25 mi | 30–50 min | 55–75 min at the evening peak |
| Glendale (State Farm Stadium) | about 35 km / 22 mi | 30–45 min | 60–90 min on event days |
| Sedona | about 185 km / 115 mi | 2 h – 2 h 20 | Longer on weekends in spring and fall |
Choosing a road
From Sky Harbor, the quickest route east to Scottsdale and Tempe is usually SR 143 to the Loop 202, then onward. For north Scottsdale the Loop 101 takes over. For Glendale it is I-10 west. A driver who checks live traffic changes the choice by a few minutes, which is worth more than it sounds when you are heading to a tee time.
Sedona and day trips
Sedona is a scenic day trip or a destination in its own right, roughly two hours north. A one-way transfer works for the resort stay; for a day with stops, an hourly car makes more sense. Our personal driver service covers the hourly format.
Scottsdale by limousine: golf, spring training and the winter season
The Valley's visitor season runs from late autumn through spring. February brings the Phoenix Open golf tournament at TPC Scottsdale, which is usually held in early February, and Cactus League spring training from late February into March. Hotels fill, roads clog around Scottsdale Road and the 101, and arrival-day demand for cars rises sharply. Booking a limousine to Scottsdale early is the practical move, as the best vehicles go first.
Golf bags and group trips
Golf trips to Scottsdale are common from Canada. An Executive Sedan takes up to 3 passengers with 2 large and 2 cabin bags, which is not enough for three golfers with bags. Use the Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar) for up to 6 passengers and 5 to 6 large bags, or the Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter) for up to 12 passengers and 12 bags. Tell us how many sets of clubs at booking, and we confirm a vehicle that holds them. See the fleet page.
Meet and greet, tracking and waiting time
Every airport pickup is flight-tracked. After an international landing you have 60 minutes of free waiting; after a domestic landing 30 minutes. Name-board meet and greet is available on request, with your name or an alias on the board. Details are on the meet and greet page.
The Sky Train stations also work as meeting points for rideshare, but we prefer a straightforward arrangement: your confirmation lists the terminal and the pickup instructions, and the driver messages you when your flight lands.
Corporate and resort travel
Phoenix is a conference destination, with large resorts and a downtown convention centre. For corporate groups, our executive car service page covers corporate accounts with monthly invoicing, and our guide to corporate meetings at hotels and resorts explains group arrivals and offsite days. Multi-leg itineraries, such as Phoenix then Las Vegas, can sit on one booking.
Cancellation terms
More than 72 hours' notice: no charge. 72 hours or less: 10%. 48 hours or less: 50%. 24 hours or less or a no-show: 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup. Event bookings can carry their own deadline, always printed on the confirmation.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a train from Phoenix airport to Scottsdale?
No. The free Sky Train takes you from the terminals to the 44th Street station, where Valley Metro Rail runs to Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa, but there is no rail line to Scottsdale. Most visitors take a car, taxi or ride app for the 17 km to Old Town.
How far is Phoenix airport from Scottsdale?
Old Town Scottsdale is about 17 km (10 to 11 mi) from Sky Harbor, usually 20 to 30 minutes. North Scottsdale and Kierland are about 40 km (25 mi) away and take 30 to 50 minutes. Weekday peaks can add 20 minutes or more.
Where do Uber and Lyft pick up at PHX?
At Terminal 3, ride-app pickup is on the south outer curb; at Terminal 4, it is on the Level 1 outer curbs near designated doors. Pickup is also available at the 24th Street and 44th Street Sky Train stations. Follow your app, and note the layout can change.
Can you get a Waymo at Phoenix airport?
Yes. The airport says Waymo curbside pickup and drop-off is available at the Terminal 3 and Terminal 4 curbs 24 hours a day, plus at the 24th Street and 44th Street Sky Train stations. It is a ride-app option, not a chauffeured service, so it has no meet and greet or fixed quote.
Do I need to tip a private driver in Arizona?
Tipping is customary in the United States. Many travellers add a gratuity for good service. Your confirmation states what, if anything, is already included. If you are unsure, ask the desk before the trip and we will tell you what applies to your booking.
How much is a taxi from Phoenix airport to Scottsdale?
Taxis are metered, so the fare depends on route and traffic and we do not state a figure. Ride-app fares surge with demand. A private transfer with Onroutz.ca has a fixed all-in fare, shown in the booker before you pay, so a golf-week surge does not change it.
What is the best way to get from Phoenix airport to Sedona?
A private car is the most direct way: about 185 km (115 mi), usually two hours to two hours twenty. For a day trip with stops at viewpoints, book an hourly car instead. Tell us the number of travellers and the plan, and we will recommend a vehicle.
Can you pick up golf clubs and a group from PHX?
Yes. The Luxury SUV takes up to 6 passengers and 5 to 6 large bags, and the Executive Sprinter takes up to 12 passengers and 12 bags. Tell us the number of golf bags at booking so the vehicle is confirmed with enough space.
