Dubai Airport to Abu Dhabi is a routine airport transfer, and it is easy to get wrong. The two cities are about 150 km apart by road (93 mi), the drive is straightforward, and yet the choice of how you cover it changes your evening completely: a metered taxi that starts at the rank, a connection through a metro and a coach station, a new passenger train that does not stop at the airport, or a car that is waiting when you clear arrivals.
This page lays the options side by side with real times, so you can decide before you land. If you want the private car, the booker shows a fixed all-in fare for your exact terminal, destination and vehicle before you pay.
What is the best way to get from Dubai Airport to Abu Dhabi?
For most travellers carrying luggage, a pre-booked private car is the simplest way: it runs door to door in about 1 h 30 – 2 h, with no terminal change and no last-mile leg. The Etihad Rail passenger train and intercity coaches are good for light packers heading to the stations they serve, and a metered taxi works if you are happy to queue.
The honest answer depends on your party size, your luggage and how close your address is to a station.
Dubai International (DXB) sits on the Dubai side of the emirate, close to Deira and Garhoud. Abu Dhabi's city centre lies to the south-west along the Gulf coast. The airport-to-airport road distance to Zayed International (AUH) is shorter, roughly 130 km, which matters if you are heading to Abu Dhabi airport rather than the city. For the opposite direction, see Abu Dhabi Airport to Dubai.
Distance and drive time: DXB to Abu Dhabi by road
From DXB to the Abu Dhabi Corniche the drive is about 150 km (93 mi). Two main highways link the emirates: Sheikh Zayed Road (E11), which follows the coast, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road (E311), which runs further inland. Your driver chooses between them on the day depending on traffic and where you are going.
- Early morning or late evening, light traffic: about 1 h 30 – 1 h 45.
- Weekday peaks: allow 2 h to 2 h 30, because the first 30 to 40 km are inside Dubai's urban sprawl and the Abu Dhabi side slows near the city bridges.
- Friday afternoon and the evening before and after a public holiday: build in extra time. Roads are busy as the working week ends.
Dubai's electronic Salik tolls apply on the Dubai side, and the charge varies by time of day. On a booked transfer these are part of the fixed fare shown in the booker, not an extra at drop-off.
| Destination in Abu Dhabi | Approx. distance from DXB | Typical drive |
|---|---|---|
| Corniche / Al Maryah Island | 150 km / 93 mi | 1 h 30 – 2 h |
| Saadiyat Island | 165 km / 103 mi | 1 h 40 – 2 h 15 |
| Yas Island | 125 km / 78 mi | 1 h 15 – 1 h 45 |
| Zayed International Airport (AUH) | 130 km / 81 mi | 1 h 15 – 1 h 45 |
| Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque | 140 km / 87 mi | 1 h 25 – 2 h |
Distances are approximate and measured by road from the DXB terminal area; your confirmation states the exact route and drop-off.
Compare every way from Dubai Airport to Abu Dhabi
Here is the comparison a route planner would draw up. Times are door to door from the arrivals hall to a central Abu Dhabi address.

When the train or the coach is the better choice
The corridor now has a passenger train, which is worth weighing honestly. Etihad Rail's passenger service between Dubai and Abu Dhabi began on 30 September 2026. Visit Abu Dhabi lists the ride between the Dubai station and Mohamed bin Zayed City station in Abu Dhabi at about an hour, and launch reporting put the scheduled time at around 64 minutes. The train is quiet and predictable.
The catch is geography. Neither station is at DXB. Reporting on the opening describes the Dubai station, Al Yalayis, as linked by a 400 m pedestrian bridge to Jumeirah Golf Estates Metro station on the Red Line, and the Abu Dhabi station sits in Mohamed bin Zayed City, well outside the Corniche area. From DXB you ride the Metro first, change, walk the bridge, take the train, then still need a taxi or car for the last stretch. On a good day that is workable. With two suitcases and a child it is not.
Choose the train or coach if you:
- travel alone with one bag and your destination is near the station;
- are not in a hurry and want the lowest-effort public option;
- have already cleared the airport and are comfortable on platforms.
Choose the private car if you:
- are three or more, with checked luggage;
- have children, a car seat requirement or a mobility need;
- land late, when public timetables thin out;
- have a fixed appointment in Abu Dhabi and cannot absorb a missed connection.
Leaving DXB: which door, which terminal
DXB has three passenger terminals. Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 are linked by the Metro Red Line, and Dubai Airports lists the Red Line as serving both. The operating hours on its Metro page run from 5 am to midnight Monday to Thursday and Saturday, 5 am to 1 am on Friday, and 8 am to midnight on Sunday, so check them if you land very early or late. Terminal 2 is not mentioned on that page for Metro access.
Taxis queue at designated ranks in each terminal, according to the DXB taxi page, and the fare starts at AED 25. That is a metered start fare set by the airport page as of 2026, not a price for the trip to Abu Dhabi.
For a booked car, your chauffeur is told your terminal and flight number. We track the flight, so a delayed arrival or an early landing moves the pickup automatically. Free waiting time is 60 minutes after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic one, counted from landing.
If you would like a name-board greeting inside arrivals, ask at booking. The Dubai airport meet and greet page explains how it works, and you can use an alias name on the board for privacy.
Entry rules and the first hour at DXB
Before you plan the drive, you need to clear the border. The Dubai Airports passport control and visas page states that citizens of Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States are among those eligible for a free visa on arrival. It also notes that rules change, so confirm with your airline before you fly.
At passport control, Smart Gates are available to eligible travellers, including visa-on-arrival guests with biometric passports. Families with children and guests with large strollers are not eligible for the gates, so they use the staffed desks, which can be slower. The GDRFA visa office is in Terminal 3 arrivals, near Entrance 1, and is open 24 hours.
A realistic plan is 45 to 90 minutes from landing to the kerb on a normal day, longer at peak banks of arrivals. Build that into your Abu Dhabi schedule.
Vehicle choices for the Abu Dhabi run
Match the car to the people and the bags. One executive with a laptop bag and a suitcase is well served by an Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar), which seats three with two large and two cabin bags. A First Class Sedan (S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar) adds rear-seat room for a long highway run. Two parents, two children and a pile of checked luggage belong in a Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar), which takes up to six passengers and five to six large bags. A delegation landing together can fill an Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter) with 12 people and 12 bags; see Sprinter van with driver.
The model is confirmed at booking as "or similar". If you travel with an infant, a toddler or a child who still needs a booster, request the seat when you book and it is fitted before pickup. Most cars carry water and a phone charger. The fleet page shows each class.
Where in Abu Dhabi are you going?
Abu Dhabi's destinations are spread across islands and districts, and the best car depends on which one.
Corniche, Al Maryah Island and the business district
Most hotel and office addresses are here. Allow extra time for the final few kilometres on weekday afternoons when the bridges and Corniche feeder roads are busy.
Saadiyat Island
Saadiyat is a cultural and beach district on an island north-east of the city. The causeway approach adds time compared with a central drop-off.
Yas Island
Yas Island is the nearest major Abu Dhabi destination from Dubai, and it is the home of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. If you are travelling for race weekend, see Abu Dhabi Grand Prix transfers.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
The mosque sits between the three bridges that connect Abu Dhabi island to the mainland. Per the mosque's own site, visiting hours are 9 am to 8:30 pm Saturday to Thursday, and on Friday 9 am to 11:30 am and 2:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Visitors enter through Gate 6. Dress modestly, and plan the day around the Friday worship hours.
For a full-day hire in the capital, see car with driver in Abu Dhabi.
Late arrivals, early departures and flight changes
Late-night landings are when public options are thinnest and the highway is quiet, so a pre-booked car is the practical choice. Early flights out of Dubai may mean a 3 am pickup from Abu Dhabi.
Because we track the flight, a long delay does not cost you the transfer. Within the free waiting window the car stays; beyond it, the desk contacts you. Multi-leg itineraries, for example DXB to Abu Dhabi and back to Dubai days later, can sit on one booking.
Cancellation is simple. More than 72 hours' notice carries no charge. At 72 hours or less it is 10%, at 48 hours or less 50%, and at 24 hours or less or a no-show 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup. Major events and conventions sometimes have their own deadline; when they do, it appears on the confirmation.
One booking, one invoice, one contact
Onroutz.ca is a Toronto desk that books door-to-door transfers worldwide. In the United Arab Emirates the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner whose vehicles are no more than four model years old, but you deal with one desk, one confirmation, one invoice and one 24/7 contact. Corporate accounts can be invoiced monthly, and No photographs of passengers and no posts about trips; an NDA is signed whenever you ask.
If you are comparing a one-way run with a return, the airport transfers hub shows each airport we cover, and the Middle East overview lists the Gulf cities and routes. For the Dubai end of your trip, see DXB airport transfers and Dubai hotel transfers. For a short regional hop instead, there is Dubai to Sharjah Airport. The wider transfers hub lists every route.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Dubai Airport from Abu Dhabi?
It is about 150 km (93 mi) from DXB to central Abu Dhabi by road, and roughly 130 km to Zayed International Airport. Normal driving time is 1 h 30 – 2 h to the city centre. Weekday peak hours and incidents on the highway can push it towards 2 h 30.
How long does it take to go from Dubai Airport to Abu Dhabi?
Plan 1 h 30 – 2 h by car outside peak hours. Add 45 to 90 minutes before that for passport control and baggage on a normal day. By train and Metro with transfers, 2 h 30 – 3 h is realistic, because neither rail station is at the airport.
What is the lowest-cost way to get from Dubai Airport to Abu Dhabi?
Public options such as the Metro-plus-coach route or the Etihad Rail train cost the least per person, and the operators publish their fares. The trade-off is time and effort. For three or more people with luggage, the booker quotes a fixed private-car fare before you pay, so you can compare per person.
Can a Dubai taxi take me all the way to Abu Dhabi?
Yes, metered taxis from the DXB rank take intercity trips. The fare starts at AED 25 at the airport rank as of 2026, then runs on the meter plus distance. Because the meter is not fixed in advance, travellers who want a known price choose a pre-booked fare.
Is there a train from Dubai Airport to Abu Dhabi?
Not directly. Etihad Rail's Dubai to Abu Dhabi service opened on 30 September 2026, but its stations are not at the airport. You would take the Metro to the Dubai station area, ride the train, and then continue from the Abu Dhabi station in Mohamed bin Zayed City by taxi or car.
Do I need a visa for Dubai if I fly in from Canada, the UK or the USA?
Dubai Airports states that Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States are on its list of nationalities eligible for a free visa on arrival. Rules can change, so check with your airline and the GDRFA before you travel, and carry a passport with enough validity.
How long will the driver wait for me at DXB?
The first hour after an international landing is free waiting time; after a domestic flight it is half an hour. We track your flight, so the clock starts at landing, not at the scheduled time. Name-board meet and greet inside arrivals is available on request.
Which Abu Dhabi hotels and districts can the car reach?
The car goes to any address in Abu Dhabi: hotels on the Corniche, Al Maryah Island, Saadiyat Island, Yas Island, residential towers and offices. It can also continue to Zayed International Airport. Give the exact hotel name or address at booking so the driver and route are confirmed in advance.
What if my flight is delayed or I land at a different terminal?
Tell the desk at booking and reply to the confirmation message if anything changes. With flight tracking, the pickup follows the actual landing time, and the driver is told the terminal in advance. If your terminal changes after you book, contact the 24/7 desk and the chauffeur is redirected.
