How do I get from the Houston airport to the Galveston cruise port?
Galveston's cruise terminals are about 66 km (41 mi) from Houston Hobby airport, a drive of 45 to 60 minutes, and about 113 km (70 mi) from George Bush Intercontinental, 75 to 90 minutes. The options are a private transfer, a cruise-line shuttle, a shared van, a taxi, rideshare or a rental car.
A cruise holiday out of Galveston begins with a road trip that people frequently plan too tightly. Houston has two major airports, Galveston is an island at the end of a causeway, and embarkation mornings are when the largest number of travellers all converge on the same few roads. Get the first 70 or 110 kilometres right, and the rest of the holiday starts calmly.
This page covers the route from both airports: distances and drive times, the four cruise terminals and how to know which one is yours, the Galveston Causeway on sailing day, and how a pre-booked car from Onroutz.ca compares with the alternatives. If you already know your flight and ship, the booker will return a fixed fare in a minute.
Houston airport to Galveston cruise port: the two routes
Houston Hobby (HOU) is the nearer airport, about 66 km (41 mi) from the port. The port's own arrival guide calls it a 45-minute drive, which is realistic with no traffic. Allow 60 minutes to be safe, longer on a Friday or Sunday afternoon. The route follows I-45 South all the way to Galveston Island and then Harborside Drive to the terminals.
George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) is the larger international hub, about 113 km (70 mi) north of the island. The port describes it as about an hour and a half; with no traffic it is closer to 75 minutes. It uses the same I-45 corridor south through Houston, so rush-hour traffic through the city is the variable that hurts.
| From | Distance | Typical drive | Add for trouble |
|---|---|---|---|
| Houston Hobby (HOU) | 66 km / 41 mi | 45 – 60 min | Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings |
| George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) | 113 km / 70 mi | 75 – 90 min | Weekday rush hour through central Houston |
| Houston downtown hotels | about 80 km / 50 mi | 55 – 80 min | Same corridor |
One hard rule: the port's embarkation page advises adding at least 30 minutes of buffer for the Galveston Causeway on embarkation mornings, because it can back up significantly. The airport leg and the causeway leg are separate risks, and a driver who knows both can reroute.
Which cruise terminal in Galveston is yours?
The Port of Galveston runs four active cruise terminals along Harborside Drive. Their numbers and addresses are published by the port, while the cruise-line assignment is set by each line and can change by ship and season, so your boarding documents are the authority.
| Terminal | Address | Typical users (confirm with your line) |
|---|---|---|
| Terminal 10 | Pier 10 on Harborside Drive | Royal Caribbean |
| Terminal 16 | 1602 Harborside Drive | MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line; opened in 2025 |
| Terminal 25 | 2502 Harborside Drive | Carnival, with select sailings from Disney and Princess |
| Terminal 28 | 2702 Harborside Drive | Disney, with other lines on some sailings |
Terminal numbers were changed in recent years: Terminal 25 was formerly Terminal 1 and Terminal 28 was Terminal 2, so older apps and guides may use the old labels. The Port of Galveston arrival and departure guide tells you to confirm your terminal as 25, 28, 16 or 10 before you go, and signs on the island direct you to the right entrance. The port's Terminal 25 page describes that terminal. Your Onroutz.ca chauffeur will be given the terminal you tell us about at booking; if your cruise line moves you, send the desk a message and it will be updated.
Embarkation timing: when to arrive
The port reports that most of its terminals open check-in around 10:30 to 11:00 a.m., and boarding typically begins between 11:00 and 11:30. It recommends arriving within the window your cruise line assigns during online check-in, with 10:30 to 11:00 as the usual sweet spot, and avoiding arrival before 10:00 a.m. when terminal amenities may not yet be open. Details are on the port's timing page.
Work backwards from that. If your assigned window opens at 11:00 and you want to be at the terminal at 11:15, a car from Hobby should leave the airport by 10:00 and a car from IAH by 9:15. That makes it realistic to fly in the same morning only if your flight lands before roughly 8:30 a.m., and even then the port itself suggests arriving in Galveston the night before when you are flying in. A delayed first flight of the day, a baggage claim queue and a congested I-45 can all consume the buffer.
Why the private car makes sense for a cruise day
For two people with one suitcase each and a wide schedule, any option works. A private transfer from Onroutz.ca earns its place when:
- You are three to six people. A Luxury SUV seats up to six with five or six large bags. A group of six taking two taxis or rideshare cars pays for two vehicles and arrives separately.
- You have a lot of luggage. Cruise packing is heavier than normal travel. A Sprinter seats up to 12 passengers and 12 bags.
- Your flight is late or early. Flight tracking moves the pickup, and 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing and 30 after a domestic one means a delayed bag does not cost you the car.
- You have a fixed boarding window. Your chauffeur knows the roads and reroutes around incidents; a fixed fare means traffic does not change the price.
- Children or a mobility need. Note the children's ages at booking and the right infant, toddler or booster seat is provided.
How the service works: Onroutz.ca is a Toronto-based private-transfer desk. In Texas the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner with US-licensed chauffeurs, and the Toronto desk books, confirms, supports and invoices the trip. You get one confirmation, one invoice and a 24/7 contact. Vehicles are no more than four model years old, and "or similar" applies; the model is confirmed at booking.
All the ways from Houston airport to the cruise port, compared
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer (Onroutz.ca) | 45 – 60 min from HOU, 75 – 90 min from IAH | Fixed fare via booker, quoted before you pay | Sedan 2 large + 2 cabin; SUV 5 – 6 large; Sprinter 12 | Families, groups, tight boarding windows |
| Cruise-line transfer | Scheduled, often waits for a group | Per-person price set by the line; not all lines offer it | Usually 1 – 2 bags per guest | Travellers who want everything under one booking |
| Shared van or shuttle | 60 – 120 min with other stops | Per-seat price | Limits per person apply | Solo travellers who can wait |
| Taxi | 45 – 90 min | Metered; many companies quote a flat fare to the port | Fine for 2 to 3 bags | Travellers who agree a flat fare before the ride |
| Rideshare | 45 – 90 min | Surge-priced, especially on sailing mornings | Vehicle-dependent | Couples with light luggage |
| Rental car | 45 – 90 min | Rental plus parking | Unlimited | Those staying on to explore Texas |
The port's guide notes that taxis are available at both airports and around the island, many companies offer flat-rate rides to the port, Uber and Lyft serve the port, and some cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean offer direct airport transfers that can be booked in advance. No public train serves the island from either airport.
When a cruise-line transfer is the better choice: you are a single traveller who values having the line responsible if your flight is delayed, and the line's schedule suits your landing time. When a private car wins: three or more people, extra bags, an early flight, a late flight, or any reason to leave when you are ready rather than when the van is full.
Driving on sailing day: I-45, the causeway and Harborside Drive
From the north or west you take I-45 South onto Galveston Island and follow Harborside Drive to the terminals. Travellers from the east can reach the island by Highway 87 and the Bolivar Ferry, which has its own waits. Several ships may sail on the same day, which concentrates arrivals around the same hour, so the port recommends checking its cruise schedule. For Terminal 28 the port has issued a traffic advisory recommending 37th Street for access, and your chauffeur will use the entrance the port currently recommends.
At the terminal, passengers can unload at designated loading areas and porters take checked bags at the curb, tag them and send them toward the stateroom, so you will not carry large cases through the terminal. That curbside bag drop is the main reason a car that arrives right at the terminal door beats a shuttle from a remote parking lot.
A night on the island before you sail
The easier way to remove all timing risk is to fly in the day before. Galveston has a historic Strand district, beachfront hotels and seafood restaurants within a short drive of the piers, and a private car can take you from the airport to your hotel on Seawall Boulevard or in the Strand and then to the terminal the next morning. The same chauffeur, or a new one, can be booked for each leg on one reservation. This is also the best way to relax if you are connecting from a long-haul flight.
If you are comparing cruise gateways, the cruise transfers hub covers the rest of our network, including Port Canaveral from Orlando, Miami airport to the cruise port, Fort Lauderdale airport to Port Everglades and Seattle for Alaska sailings. A Texas arrival can also be made via Dallas; see DFW airport transfers for that gateway.
Large groups, family reunions and multi-ship parties
Families booking a cruise together often arrive on several flights. Onroutz.ca can pick up each flight separately and bring everyone to the same terminal, or consolidate into an Executive Sprinter with up to 12 seats when arrivals line up. Mini-coaches and coaches from 20 to 56 seats are available on request for larger groups; the Sprinter van with driver page describes the larger vehicles. For the general way a booking flows, see how private airport transfers work.
Cancellation
If your cruise changes: more than 72 hours' notice, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10%; 48 hours or less, 50%; 24 hours or less or no-show, 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup. The FAQ, the USA hub and the fleet page give more detail, and the airport transfers hub shows how the same booking works at other airports.
Frequently asked questions
How far is the Galveston cruise port from the Houston airport?
Hobby airport is about 66 km (41 mi) and Bush Intercontinental about 113 km (70 mi). Without traffic, the drive is about 45 minutes from Hobby and 75 minutes from IAH; the port suggests allowing up to 90 minutes from IAH and extra time on embarkation days.
Which Houston airport is better for a Galveston cruise?
Hobby is closer and usually simpler, but flights are what decide it. If your best fare lands at IAH, the extra 30 to 40 minutes is manageable with a pre-booked car. Either way, the port and travel guides suggest arriving the day before.
How much does it cost to get from Houston airport to Galveston cruise port?
It depends on vehicle, airport and day. Taxi, rideshare and shuttle prices change with demand. The Onroutz.ca booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay.
What time should I arrive at the Galveston cruise terminal?
Arrive within the check-in window your cruise line gives you. The port says most terminals open around 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. with boarding from 11:00 to 11:30, and it advises not arriving before 10:00 a.m.
Is there a train or bus from Houston to the Galveston cruise port?
Not a convenient one for cruise passengers with luggage. The sensible options are a private transfer, a cruise-line shuttle, a shared van, taxi, rideshare or rental car.
Can I get a car service from Houston airport to Galveston?
Yes. Book through Onroutz.ca with your flight number and cruise line; the chauffeur tracks the flight, meets you at arrivals if you ask for a meet and greet, and takes you to the correct terminal at the pier.
Can I fly in on the morning of my cruise?
You can, if the flight lands early, but the port itself suggests arriving the night before. Delays, baggage and I-45 traffic can use up the cushion. A same-morning plan needs a landing well before about 8:30 a.m.
What if my flight is delayed?
Onroutz.ca tracks flights. Included waiting runs 60 minutes from an international landing and 30 from a domestic one. If you are likely to miss the ship, call the 24/7 desk immediately so it can help you plan.
