Cancun is one of the busiest leisure airports on the Mexican Caribbean, and the first hour after you land decides how the holiday starts. Onroutz.ca arranges a private airport transfer from Cancun to your hotel: a licensed driver waiting with your name, a vehicle sized to your group, and a fixed fare you see before you pay. This page explains how the arrival works, which terminal you will land in, how far each resort area really is and when a bus or a taxi is the sensible alternative.

How does an airport transfer from Cancun work?

You book online with your flight number and hotel. The Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto confirms the booking and assigns a vetted, licensed local partner in Quintana Roo. Your driver tracks the flight, meets you at arrivals with a name board and drives you directly to the hotel for the fare you were quoted.

In Cancun the ride is delivered by a local transfer partner, but the desk in Toronto handles everything: One booking and one invoice cover it, and the same 24/7 desk answers every question. Partner vehicles are no more than four model years old, and every vehicle and chauffeur is licensed and commercially insured.

Your confirmation lists the flight, the expected terminal, the pickup instructions and the driver's name once assigned. If the flight lands early or late, tracking updates the pickup without a phone call. International arrivals include 60 minutes of free waiting from the actual landing time, which is enough for immigration, baggage and a slow walk through the terminal. You can add a name-board meet and greet inside arrivals if you would like the driver to find you at the customs exit, and you can ask for an alias on the board if you prefer not to display your name.

Which terminal will you land in? Terminals 2, 3 and 4

Cancun International Airport (CUN) is operated by ASUR and has had up to four terminals. In practice you will arrive at one of three. Terminal 3 handles international flights from the United States, Canada and Europe. Terminal 2 is the oldest and serves domestic and international flights, mostly to Central and South America with some long-haul routes. Terminal 4 opened in 2017 and serves a mix of domestic and international airlines. Terminal 1, which was used for charter and private flights, has been closed for renovation, so if a charter operator tells you otherwise, rely on your confirmation instead.

You do not have to work out which terminal applies. Flight tracking tells the driver where your aircraft is parked and which hall you will walk into, and the driver positions accordingly. A free inter-terminal shuttle runs between the buildings, so a change of terminal does not mean a long walk or a taxi. ASUR publishes airport information on its official Cancun airport page if you want to see the airport map.

In every terminal the driver stands past the customs exit with a board showing your name. If you cannot see it within a couple of minutes, message the desk through the link in your confirmation.

Cancun airport transportation compared: bus, taxi, shuttle and private car

The airport sits on the mainland south-west of the Hotel Zone, so almost every route out is a road trip of 20 minutes to well over an hour. Here is the honest comparison, with the options a first-time visitor will meet.

ModeDoor-to-door timeCost noteLuggageBest for
ADO coach to downtown or Hotel Zone40–90 min with stopsPer-seat ticket at the ADO counterHold luggage bay on the coachSolo travellers with one bag who are staying near a stop

Private transfer with Onroutz.ca20–60 min to Hotel Zone, no extra stopsFixed fare via bookerSedan to Sprinter; luggage loaded for youGroups, families, late flights and anyone who wants the driver waiting

The shared van is a bus with extra stops, and the time to the last drop-off is set by other passengers' hotels. The coach suits people travelling light, but it ends at a stop and you still need to reach the hotel. A taxi works when you did not plan, although fares are agreed rather than metered. The Government of Canada's travel advice for Mexico says to use only officially marked taxis, to avoid hailing taxis in the street and, where you pay by card, to book and prepay at the designated boarding area.

A private car wins when there are three or more of you, when you carry golf clubs or strollers, when your flight lands late and you want to be asleep at the hotel within the hour, or when your hotel is a long way down the coast. A private transfer gives you the same direct drive whether you are one person or six, and the fare is quoted per vehicle before you commit.

From the airport to the Hotel Zone: distances by zone

The Hotel Zone is a long strip that runs along Boulevard Kukulcán between the Caribbean and the Nichupté lagoon system. Sources put the airport at roughly 10 to 25 km from the strip (6 to 16 miles), and the spread is real: hotels at the southern end near Punta Nizuc are the closest to the airport, and the hotels near Punta Cancún at the northern bend are the furthest. A drive that is 20 to 30 minutes at midday can take 45 minutes at the start of the Saturday check-in rush, when every tour van and rental car is heading for the same boulevard.

Use these planning figures, and rely on your confirmation for the exact timing once the hotel is entered:

  • Southern Hotel Zone (Punta Nizuc): about 10 to 15 km (6 to 9 miles), 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Middle Hotel Zone: about 15 to 20 km (9 to 12 miles), 25 to 40 minutes.
  • Northern Hotel Zone near Punta Cancún: about 20 to 25 km (12 to 16 miles), 30 to 50 minutes.
  • Downtown Cancun (El Centro): about 15 to 20 km (9 to 12 miles), 25 to 40 minutes.

Most resorts hold rooms until the afternoon, so ask about early check-in or luggage storage before a morning arrival. For the strip in detail, see Cancun Hotel Zone transfers.

Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya

South of the airport, Highway 307 carries nearly everyone to the Riviera Maya. Playa del Carmen is about 55 km (34 miles) from the airport, usually 45 to 70 minutes; that figure rises on Fridays, Sundays and holiday weeks when the corridor through Puerto Morelos fills up. Our dedicated page covers it in full: Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen includes the bus and train options, Playacar, Quinta Avenida drop-offs and the Cozumel ferry.

Puerto Morelos, Playa Paraíso, Puerto Aventuras and Akumal follow along the coast. All-inclusive resorts here sit behind long access roads, so allow time between the highway exit and the lobby, and give the desk the full property name because several resorts share similar names.

If your destination is further down the coast, see Cancun airport to Tulum, which covers the hotel zone along the beach road and the town. Multi-stop trips are simple to arrange: a transfer to Playa del Carmen followed by a morning pickup to Tulum can sit on one booking, with one confirmation and one invoice.

Isla Mujeres, Costa Mujeres and Puerto Juárez

Ferries to Isla Mujeres leave from Puerto Juárez and from Playa Tortugas inside the Hotel Zone. For an island hotel, the transfer ends at the ferry dock and the crossing is a separate ticket; hotels at Costa Mujeres are reached by road with no ferry. Tell the desk which side you are staying on, and on departure day leave a buffer for the last practical boat.

Entry paperwork, the Visitax and what to have ready

Mexico asks visitors arriving by air to complete a digital immigration form (the FMMD) and keep it as proof of legal status. The Government of Canada's advice notes that tourist visas are not required for stays of up to 180 days; the UK government's advice says you can download digital proof of entry from the National Migration Institute (INM) portal within the first 60 days of your stay. Read the current wording on the Government of Canada Mexico page and the UK government's Mexico entry requirements before you fly, because digital procedures have been changing.

The state of Quintana Roo also charges a visitor tax, known as the Visitax. The UK government's guidance states that you must pay it, that you can pay online before or during your stay and that you must show proof of payment at the airport before leaving. Use only the state's official site, which ends in .gob.mx, because copycat sites charge service fees. Your driver cannot pay the Visitax for you and has no role in immigration, so deal with both forms before you land and keep a screenshot on your phone.

The UK government also warns that fake immigration officers can operate at international airports: go straight to the immigration hall and decline offers of help.

Private Cancun airport transfer: vehicles, groups and child seats

Vehicle classes on Onroutz.ca are described as "or similar", with the model confirmed at booking:

  • Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar): up to 3 passengers, 2 large and 2 cabin bags.
  • First Class Sedan (S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar): up to 3 passengers.
  • Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar): up to 6 passengers and 5 to 6 large bags.
  • Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter): up to 12 passengers and 12 bags, popular for wedding parties and family reunions.
  • Mini-coach and coach seats from 20 to 56 on request, and Maybach, Rolls-Royce, stretch limousine or armoured vehicles on request with availability confirmed at booking.

Count luggage carefully: a family of five with two strollers will not fit an SUV once everyone has packed for a week, and the Sprinter is the better call. See the fleet page for the classes. Child, toddler and booster seats are available on request at booking, and most vehicles carry water and phone chargers.

Groups often arrive on several flights, and staggered pickups can sit on one itinerary. See wedding guest shuttles and Sprinter van with driver for larger parties.

Arrival day and departure day: timing that works

Flights from Toronto, New York and Chicago often land within the same few hours, and immigration lines can turn a short walk into an hour, which is why the free waiting period runs from the actual landing. If your bags are delayed, message the desk. On departure day, plan to reach the airport about three hours before an international flight; the pickup time is set from your departure, the hotel's distance and the day of the week.

Booking, waiting time and cancellation

Enter the airport, hotel, date, flight and number of travellers and bags on the booker. It shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay. Corporate accounts with monthly invoicing and multi-leg itineraries are available.

Cancellation terms are counted from the scheduled pickup. With more than 72 hours' notice there is no charge. At 72 hours or less the charge is 10%, at 48 hours or less it is 50%, and at 24 hours or less, or for a no-show, it is 100%. If your trip falls during a major event, check the confirmation: the deadline may differ.

Waiting time is included: 60 minutes after an international landing, 30 minutes after a domestic landing and 15 minutes on other pickups. Our drivers do not photograph clients or post about trips, and a non-disclosure agreement can be arranged on request.

For the wider region, return to the resort transfers hub or the Caribbean and Mexico overview. Related airport and resort pages include Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta and Punta Cana. Travellers starting in Ontario can plan the whole trip with the Toronto desk or the travel desk.

Frequently asked questions

How much are airport transfers in Cancun?

It depends on the zone, vehicle and time of day. Taxis agree a fare at the kiosk and shuttles charge per seat. The Onroutz.ca booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay.

What is the best way to transfer from Cancun airport to your hotel?

For two or more people, a pre-booked private transfer is the simplest: the driver is waiting, the route is direct and the fare is fixed. A coach suits one traveller with light luggage near a stop. A taxi works if you arrive without a booking, though the fare is agreed on the spot rather than metered.

Are airport transfers cheaper than taxis?

Not always, and we do not claim they are. Taxis charge per vehicle and shuttles per seat; a private transfer is also per vehicle, so it compares best for three or more travellers or a long drive. The difference is that the fare is fixed and quoted before you book.

What is the best way to get from Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen?

By road it is about 55 km (34 miles) and usually 45 to 70 minutes. The ADO coach is a low-cost option for light travellers, and the Tren Maya runs a limited timetable. A private car goes straight to the hotel without stops, which counts for more with luggage or after a late landing. See the dedicated Playa del Carmen page for details.

Are Ubers allowed into Cancun airport?

We cannot verify the current rules for ride-hailing at the airport, which have been disputed locally and can change. Canada's travel advice says that if you do use a ride-hailing app, you must confirm the driver's identity and licence plate before getting in. A pre-booked transfer removes the question, because the driver is assigned and shown on your confirmation.

Do I have to pay the Visitax at Cancun airport?

Visitors to Quintana Roo are expected to pay the state visitor tax. Payment can be made online before or during the stay, and proof of payment is checked at the airport on departure. Use the state's official .gob.mx site only, since lookalike sites add service fees. Your driver cannot pay it for you.

What happens if my flight is delayed or I miss the driver?

Flight tracking adjusts the pickup to the actual landing time and the waiting period starts from there: 60 minutes after an international landing. If you cannot find your driver, message the 24/7 desk from the link in your confirmation. If your plans change, tell the desk before the pickup time so the booking can be moved.
