China opened visa-free entry to Canadian and British passport holders from 17 February 2026, and a city that many Canadians had put off is now much easier to add to an itinerary. First-time arrivals face a different set of questions from those in Europe or the Americas: which airport, which terminal, how a taxi is paid for, and how to give a driver an address in a language you may not read. This page answers those questions, lays out the Airport Express against taxis and a booked car, and explains where a private transfer is worth having.

Check your fixed fare

What is the best Beijing airport transfer to your hotel?

The Airport Express train is the most predictable way into central Beijing, taking about 20 – 30 minutes to Dongzhimen. A pre-booked private car is the better choice for three or more travellers, heavy luggage, a late arrival, a hotel away from a subway station, or a first visit without Chinese payment apps. The booker shows a fixed fare before you pay.

Beijing's road network is a set of ring roads, and the airport sits outside them, to the northeast. Where you are going matters more than the distance. A hotel near Sanlitun or Dongzhimen is a short hop from the airport expressway. A hotel in the Qianmen or Xicheng districts sits on the far side of the city and takes longer. A car with a driver who knows the route and the hotel's vehicle entrance removes the guesswork.

Beijing Capital Airport to the city: every option compared

The train is quick, but it does not take you to the hotel door. At Dongzhimen you change to subway lines 2 or 13 and walk with your bags up and down stairs. A private car does not change, which is where it earns its place on this route.

The Airport Express: how it works and where it falls short

The Airport Express links the airport's terminals with Sanyuanqiao and Dongzhimen stations. Travel-guide sources describe the ride as 20 – 30 minutes, with trains about every ten minutes, and the line runs through Terminal 3 before Terminal 2, so check which terminal you used. Hours are limited, and published first and last departure times vary between sources, so verify the current timetable with the operator on the day if you land late.

The train works when you are staying close to a subway station, you carry a single bag, and you land in the daytime. It gets difficult when you have two or more large suitcases, when the hotel is a few subway stops away from the line, or when you land after the last train. Many hotels in Beijing are a 10 – 15 minute drive from the nearest interchange, and a taxi at that point has to be hailed in a language you may not speak.

Taxis, ride-hailing and getting paid: what visitors need to know

Official taxis queue at a rank outside arrivals. Drivers run the meter, and expressway tolls and peak-hour surcharges are added. The Government of Canada warns that taxi, motorcycle and pedicab drivers sometimes overcharge, especially at airports, and advises you to ask for the meter, agree a fare in advance and request a receipt, called a fapiao. It also advises avoiding unmarked "black" taxis, particularly at airports and tourist sites.

Language is a practical issue. The Canadian government notes that most drivers speak neither English nor French and recommends carrying your destination and hotel address written in Chinese characters. Payment is another. Cash and Alipay are the common options at ranks, and foreign cards are not accepted everywhere. Beijing's municipal government has set up a visitor service on the Alipay international version called GO BEIJING, with a Travel Wallet available to visitors from 40 countries and regions, and service counters at the international arrivals exit that sell local SIM cards and help with payment apps. Those are real helps for anyone who is staying several days. They do not remove the need to find a taxi after a long flight.

A pre-booked private car avoids both problems. The chauffeur has your hotel's name and address in Chinese, and the fare is agreed in the booker before you pay.

How long will the drive take?

The airport is around 25 – 30 km (16 – 19 mi) from the centre. In free-flowing traffic the drive to the Sanlitun or Dongzhimen area can take 35 – 45 minutes. Weekday traffic between 07:00 and 09:00 and 17:00 and 19:00 often pushes the same trip beyond 90 minutes, according to taxi-guide sources. A late-evening arrival gets a much faster run.

  • Sanlitun and Chaoyang: usually the shortest hotel trips, about 35 – 60 minutes.
  • Wangfujing, Dongcheng and the Forbidden City area: 45 – 80 minutes.
  • Financial Street, Xicheng and Qianmen: 55 – 90 minutes.
  • Zhongguancun and Haidian (universities, tech campuses): 50 – 80 minutes.

When you book, give the flight number and the hotel name, and the desk plans the arrival around the day's traffic pattern.

Check which Beijing airport your ticket names

Beijing has two international airports, Capital (PEK) and Daxing (PKX), and they are on opposite sides of the city. Daxing lies to the south. A ticket to the wrong airport costs hours. Confirm the airport code on your itinerary, and enter it in the booker. This page covers Capital Airport, and the desk can quote a Daxing transfer on request.

At Capital Airport, travellers use Terminals 2 and 3, and your airline determines which. Your confirmation lists the terminal for your flight.

Meeting your chauffeur at Capital Airport

After immigration and customs, you walk into the arrivals hall. Your confirmation shows the meeting point, and the chauffeur is told the same. On request the chauffeur stands inside arrivals with a name board, or with an alias name if you prefer privacy.

The flight is tracked, so a late arrival moves the pickup. After an international landing there are 60 minutes of free waiting, 30 after a domestic flight and 15 on other pickups. Immigration and customs queues for international arrivals can be long, so the waiting window is generous for a reason.

How an Onroutz.ca Beijing transfer is arranged

The desk is in Toronto. In China the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local partner, while Toronto books, confirms, supports and invoices it. A trip across several cities is therefore one booking, one confirmation, one invoice and one number to call at any hour. Partner cars are no more than four model years old (up to seven for Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach). Onroutz.ca owns no cars and has no offices in China.

  1. Enter your flight, hotel and number of passengers and bags.
  2. See the all-in fixed fare for your exact pickup and drop-off.
  3. File the confirmation that names the chauffeur and the meeting point.
  4. Arrive to a chauffeur already tracking your flight.

Vehicles for a Beijing arrival

Beijing arrivals often involve delegations and large cases, so match the vehicle to the load.

  • Executive Sedan: a Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar, with room for three passengers, two large bags and two cabin bags.
  • First Class Sedan: an S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar, also for three.
  • Luxury SUV: a Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar for up to six people and five or six large bags.
  • Executive Sprinter: twelve passengers and twelve bags in a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.

Models are "or similar" and are fixed at booking. Larger coaches (20 to 56 seats), Maybach, Rolls-Royce, stretch limousines and armoured vehicles are available on request; the desk confirms availability when you book. Add child, toddler or booster seats at the same time. Water and phone charging are in most cars. See the fleet.

Entry rules and arrival notes for China

China extended a visa waiver to ordinary passport holders from Canada and the United Kingdom, effective 17 February 2026 and running until 31 December 2026, for stays of up to 30 days for business, tourism, visiting family and friends, exchange or transit, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Paid work, long-term study and stays beyond 30 days still need a visa. The Government of Canada confirms this and requires a passport valid for six months on entry. A separate 240-hour visa-free transit policy covers 57 countries, including the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, for travellers with an onward ticket to a third country.

Visitors not staying in a hotel must register their residence with the local public security bureau within 24 hours, and hotels normally do this for guests. Foreign currency cannot be used for everyday purchases, so exchange money at approved facilities. These rules change, so confirm them with a Chinese embassy or consulate before departure.

Planning the rest of your China itinerary

Beijing is often paired with other Chinese cities and with Shanghai Pudong, Hong Kong or the Canton Fair in Guangzhou. The Asia-Pacific hub lists every route, and the airport transfers hub lists airports worldwide. A name-board welcome through arrivals is covered under airport meet and greet. For a full day with a driver, see the executive car service, and for a delegation, the Sprinter van with driver. The guide to airport transfers versus taxis and rideshares compares the options.

Our chauffeurs keep trips private: no photographs of clients, no posts about the journey, and NDAs on request. Onroutz.ca is a transport service rather than a security company, with no armed drivers or bodyguards, and it works alongside your own security people.

Official sources worth bookmarking

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announcement sets out the visa waiver for Canada and the United Kingdom. The Shanghai municipal government page summarizes the 240-hour transit policy. The Beijing government's guide for foreign visitors covers airport service counters and payment options, and the Government of Canada's China travel advice covers entry, taxis and payment. Rules change, so check them before you go.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Beijing Capital Airport to the city?

By Airport Express to Dongzhimen, by taxi from the official rank, by ride-hailing, or by a pre-booked private car. The airport is around 25 – 30 km (16 – 19 mi) from the centre, and a car usually takes 45 – 90 minutes depending on traffic.

How long is the Airport Express ride to Dongzhimen?

Travel-guide sources put the ride at roughly 20 – 30 minutes to Dongzhimen, with a short stop at Sanyuanqiao on the way. Add time for the subway transfer or a taxi to your hotel, and check the operator's timetable if you land late.

Can I use a taxi in Beijing without Chinese payment apps?

Cash is accepted, and mobile wallets are common. Beijing's government offers a visitor Travel Wallet through GO BEIJING for people from 40 countries and regions. Foreign cards are not accepted everywhere, so a pre-booked car with a fare agreed in the booker is simpler.

Is it safe to take a taxi from Beijing Airport?

Use the official rank. The Government of Canada advises avoiding unmarked "black" taxis, asking for the meter or agreeing a fare, and keeping a receipt. It also suggests having the hotel address written in Chinese characters for the driver.

Do Canadians need a visa for China in 2026?

Not for stays up to 30 days, from 17 February to 31 December 2026, per the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Government of Canada. Passports need six months of validity. Work, long study and longer stays still need a visa.

Which Beijing airport should I use?

Use whichever your ticket names. Capital Airport (PEK) is northeast of the city and Daxing (PKX) is to the south. They are far apart, so check the code before you book a transfer.

How long will the chauffeur wait at Beijing Capital?

The flight is tracked and the clock starts at landing: 60 free minutes after an international arrival, 30 after a domestic one, 15 on other pickups. If you need longer, the desk answers around the clock.

Can you take us to the Great Wall from the airport?

Yes. Tell the desk at booking and the airport transfer can be combined with a day with a driver or a multi-leg itinerary on one booking. Group sizes up to 12 fit an Executive Sprinter, and coaches are available for larger parties.

What is your cancellation policy?

Notice of more than 72 hours costs nothing. From 72 hours down to 48 the fee is 10%, from 48 to 24 hours it is 50%, and within 24 hours, or on a no-show, it is 100%. Time is counted back from the scheduled pickup. Some major events set a different deadline, which your confirmation prints.
