How do you get to the Singapore Grand Prix by private car?
You cannot drive to the gates. Roads around the Marina Centre and Padang area are closed from 7 to 13 October 2026, and private hire cars may only pick up and drop off at designated points near each gate. A private car gets you to the nearest legal point; the last few hundred metres are on foot.
That sentence is the whole planning problem, and everything below is detail. Onroutz.ca is a route planner first, so this page shows the options side by side: MRT, taxi, hire car, private transfer. It then explains when a pre-booked car with a driver who already knows the closure map is the better call.
The Formula 1 night race at Marina Bay is unlike most grand prix weekends. The circuit is a street circuit in the middle of the Central Business District and the civic district, with hotels, offices and the Esplanade inside or beside the closure zone. There is no motorway ring road and no field to park in. Every spectator, team member and hospitality guest arrives through the same few dozen streets, usually within the same two hours.
The 2026 race weekend at a glance
The 2026 Singapore Grand Prix runs from Friday 9 to Sunday 11 October 2026 on the Marina Bay Street Circuit. It is a night race, run under floodlights, and the organisers describe the event as rain or shine. The official event pages carry the confirmed timetable; start times can shift, so take the final schedule from the Singapore GP website.
The closures start well before the first practice session: the first roads close at 12.01 am on Wednesday 7 October.
If you are reading this after the 2026 race, the same logic applies to the next edition. The organisers publish dates on the official site once the Formula 1 calendar is confirmed; the race has usually been held in late September or early October. We do not quote dates we cannot confirm, so check the official calendar before you book flights.
Road closures: what the Land Transport Authority has published
For 2026 the Land Transport Authority (LTA) lists road closures around the Marina Centre and Padang area from 7 to 13 October. Roads close progressively from 12.01 am on 7 October and are fully reopened by 5.30 am on 13 October. LTA's traffic arrangements notice sets out the detail, and it is worth reading before you finalise a pickup time.
Three practical points come out of it:
- Temporary openings. On most mornings of the closure period, several roads reopen to general traffic between about 5.30 am and 10.00 am, towards Orchard Road, Shenton Way and Marina Boulevard. They shut again for track activity. Early-morning departures from the hotels are therefore the easy part of race week; afternoon and evening movements are not.
- The access lane. A single lane on Raffles Boulevard, reached from Nicoll Highway or Temasek Boulevard, serves the Marina Centre during the closure. Buses and vehicles with certain plate classes are excluded, and the permitted hours change by day. On Saturday and Sunday the published window runs from midnight to 1.00 pm, which means no general access to that lane in the afternoon and evening of race days.
- Rochor Road. The LTA keeps access to the Marina Centre open at any time via Rochor Road to Temasek Boulevard, which is how most hotel traffic reaches the Suntec and Millenia side.
Where a private car can stop: designated points by gate
During the closure period the LTA allows taxis and private hire cars to pick up and drop off only at designated locations. The OneMotoring page for the 2026 race lists them against the patron gates, and the organisers' own getting-here guide lists a nearest drop-off for each gate. A pre-booked private transfer works inside the same rules as a private hire car, so these are the points your driver will aim for.
| Patron gate | Area | Designated private hire points (OneMotoring) |
|---|---|---|
| Gate 1 | Near Nicoll Highway MRT | PARKROYAL on Beach Road (lobby); The Concourse Shopping Mall (lobby) |
| Gate 2 | Near Suntec City | Conrad Singapore Marina Bay (lobby); Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre on Raffles Boulevard |
| Gates 3A, 3B, 7 | Near City Hall MRT | Raffles City Shopping Centre; South Beach Tower; Funan Mall |
| Gates 4, 5, 6 | Near Raffles Place MRT | UOB Plaza (driveway); One Raffles Place (driveway); a temporary point at the bus stop outside OUE Bayfront on Collyer Quay, 7 pm to 1 am Friday to Sunday |
| Gate 8 | Marina Bay Sands | Marina Bay Sands Casino; the Sands Expo and Convention Centre |
The organisers' event guide pairs each gate with a drop-off street: Republic Boulevard for Gate 1, Temasek Avenue for Gate 2, Stamford for Gates 3A and 3B, Empress for Gate 4, Fullerton for Gate 5, Jubilee for Gate 6, Marina Square for Gate 7 and Helix for Gate 8. The guide notes that it is correct as of 15 September 2026 and may change, which is why your driver also checks the LTA notice on the morning of travel.
Choose the drop-off by the gate on your ticket, not by the hotel you are leaving. A ticket for Gate 8 and a hotel in Orchard is a long walk from the wrong lobby and a short one from the right one.
Taxis and the late-evening surcharge
Taxis follow the same closure rules. OneMotoring lists official taxi points at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre, Suntec Towers, Millenia Walk, Capitol Piazza and several other addresses, plus a temporary taxi point outside The Concourse on Nicoll Highway from 7 pm to 1 am on race nights. Taxi driveways serve hotels such as Conrad, Pan Pacific, PARKROYAL COLLECTION Marina Bay, Mandarin Oriental, The Ritz-Carlton Millenia and Marina Bay Sands.
An extra S$8 applies on top of the metered fare, and other applicable surcharges, for taxi trips starting from the listed taxi points on Friday 9, Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October between 9.30 pm and midnight (as of 2026, per OneMotoring). Metered taxis are a reasonable choice at 5 pm. At 10.30 pm on the Sunday, with tens of thousands of people leaving at once, the queue at a taxi point is the longest queue in the district.
Changi Airport to Marina Bay on race week
Most visitors fly into Changi Airport and go straight to a hotel near the circuit. The distance from Changi to Marina Bay is about 20 km (12 mi). Changi Airport states that rides to the city generally take about 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic and destination; on race-week afternoons add margin for the closures, because the last kilometre into the Marina Centre is where the delay builds.
Taxis are available 24 hours from the arrival areas of Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 4. Changi lists an airport surcharge on all taxi trips starting at the airport (S$8 from 5 pm to 11.59 pm and S$6 at other times, as of 2026), a 25% peak-hour surcharge in the evening, and a 50% midnight surcharge between midnight and 5.59 am. Details are on Changi Airport's leaving-the-airport page.
If you land the evening before the race and want a named driver at arrivals, see our Changi Airport page and the Changi to Singapore hotels route. Flight tracking runs on every airport pickup, and the driver waits 60 minutes free after an international landing.
Race-night modes compared
| Mode | Door-to-door time (typical) | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MRT to City Hall, Promenade, Esplanade, Raffles Place or Bayfront | 20-40 min from most central hotels, plus a short walk | Public fare, card or contactless | Cabin bag only; crowded after the race | Solo or pair, light bag, comfortable in a crowd |
| Metered taxi from a designated taxi point | 10-15 min to the circuit edge; the queue is the variable | Metered plus S$8 late-evening surcharge from listed points (9.30 pm to midnight, Fri-Sun) | 2 large bags | Short hops before 9 pm |
| App-booked private hire car | 10-20 min to the nearest designated point | Surge-priced when demand peaks | 2 large bags | Individuals who accept surge risk |
| Pre-booked private transfer, sedan or SUV | Meets you at a time and place agreed in advance | Fixed fare via booker, quoted before you pay | 2 to 6 large bags by vehicle class | Families, executives, late exits, hospitality guests |
| Private Sprinter for a group | One pickup, one drop-off point per gate | Fixed fare via booker | Up to 12 passengers with bags | Teams, corporate parties, wedding-style groups |
When the MRT is the better choice, and when it is not
On race nights the MRT is the sensible default for a fit adult with a small bag. Four lines are tied to the gates: Nicoll Highway on the Circle Line serves Gate 1, Promenade on the Circle and Downtown lines serves Gate 2, City Hall on the North South and East West lines serves the central gates, and Raffles Place and Bayfront cover the southern side. The official guides pair gates and stations in more detail than we can, so treat our notes as a map of the idea and the organisers' table as the authority.
The private car earns its place in five situations:
- Three or more travellers who want to arrive together and leave together.
- Children or older relatives, where a fixed meeting point matters more than saving a few minutes.
- Hospitality or corporate tickets with a fixed schedule, where a late guest costs more than the transport.
- Heavy luggage, for example a hotel transfer on the Monday after the race.
- Late exits. After the chequered flag the district empties in one movement, and a driver waiting at an agreed designated point is the difference between a 20-minute and a 90-minute departure.
Hotels inside the closure zone
Several well-known hotels sit within or beside the closed area: Conrad, Pan Pacific, PARKROYAL COLLECTION Marina Bay, Mandarin Oriental, The Ritz-Carlton Millenia and Marina Bay Sands. They have taxi driveways, but arriving guests should plan on a single approach rather than choosing a road on the day. Via Rochor Road to Temasek Boulevard is the route the LTA keeps open at all hours.
For stays in other districts, our Singapore hotel transfers guides cover the pickup points. If your trip also includes a Singapore stopover, the Asia-Pacific region guide links the other airports we cover.
Leaving after the race
The race ends late and the crowd leaves in one wave. A few rules of thumb from the closure map:
- Do not plan a pickup at the gate you entered. Walk to the designated point, which may be on a different street, and share the live location with your driver.
- Leave a margin before a flight. If you fly out on Monday morning, the roads reopen by 5.30 am on 13 October, but airport traffic is still heavier than usual on the day after the race.
Our drivers wait 15 minutes free on non-airport pickups. On a night when the nearest legal stop is a lobby with a queue of its own, ask for a pickup time that gives your party a buffer after the last podium photo.
Groups, teams and corporate movements
Race week brings sponsors, agencies and incentive groups who need several vehicles with matching schedules. The desk can build a multi-leg itinerary on one booking: airport arrival, hotel, circuit gate, post-race dinner, airport departure. Vehicles are Executive Sedan, First Class Sedan, Luxury SUV and Executive Sprinter (up to 12 passengers, 12 bags), or similar, with larger coaches on request. See the fleet page for the classes and the events hub for how we handle other major dates.
For Singapore, the car and chauffeur come from a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner. The Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto takes your booking, sends the confirmation, supports the trip around the clock and issues the single invoice. Partner vehicles are limited to four model years of age. Corporate accounts with monthly invoicing are available.
Entry rules for visitors
Most visitors must submit the SG Arrival Card online before arrival. ICA's SG Arrival Card page says to submit within three days before arrival, counting the arrival day, that it is free, and that it is not a visa. Check your passport's visa rules separately. Do not pay a third party to complete the card; ICA does not endorse paid submission services.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get dropped off at the circuit gates?
No. Between 7 and 13 October 2026 the surrounding roads are closed, and taxis and private hire cars may only use designated points. Your driver will stop at the nearest permitted point for your gate, and you walk the rest. The official getting-here guide lists a nearest drop-off street for each gate.
How much is an Uber or Grab to the Singapore Grand Prix?
App fares are dynamic and rise sharply when demand peaks, especially after the race. No official source publishes a fixed price. Taxis from listed taxi points add S$8 on race nights between 9.30 pm and midnight (as of 2026). For a fixed fare quoted before you book, use our booker.
What is the best way to get to the Singapore Grand Prix?
For one fit traveller with a small bag, the MRT is usually fastest, because four lines tie to the gates. For families, groups, hospitality guests or anyone with luggage, a pre-booked private transfer to the designated point for your gate avoids queues and surge fares.
How long does it take to get from Changi Airport to Marina Bay?
The distance is about 20 km (12 mi). Changi Airport quotes rides to the city at about 20 to 30 minutes in normal traffic. During race week allow extra time on afternoons and evenings, when the closure area adds delay on the last stretch into the Marina Centre.
Are airport pickups possible during the closure?
Yes. Airport roads are outside the closure zone. Only the final approach to the Marina Centre is affected. The driver tracks your flight, waits 60 minutes free after international landings and can meet you at arrivals with a name board on request.
Is there a different cancellation rule for the Grand Prix?
Big events may carry a different cancellation deadline, and when they do it is printed on your booking confirmation. Our standard terms are no charge with more than 72 hours' notice, then 10%, 50% and 100% as the pickup approaches, counted from the scheduled pickup time.
When is the next Singapore Grand Prix?
The 2026 race weekend is 9 to 11 October 2026. Dates for the next edition depend on the confirmed Formula 1 calendar, so check the official Singapore GP site. The race has usually been held in late September or early October.
