Port Everglades is one of the busiest cruise ports in Florida, and it lies almost within sight of the airport's runways. Because it is so close, many travellers underestimate the transfer: they book a flight that lands at 11 am, assume the ship is a ten-minute drive away and then discover that the road to the terminals fills with taxis, shuttles and delivery trucks on a typical sailing day. This page covers the full FLL airport to cruise port picture, with published fares, rideshare zones and the timing decisions that matter on embarkation and disembarkation days.
Onroutz.ca books and supports the trip from our desk in Toronto. The car itself is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured Florida partner, so one booking, one confirmation and one invoice cover the whole ride.
How do I get from FLL airport to Port Everglades?
Take a taxi from the lower-level stand, call a ride app from the airport's marked zones, or pre-book a private car that tracks your flight and drops you at your cruise terminal. The trip is about 5 km (3 mi) and usually takes 10–25 minutes, longer on ship days.
The airport's official ground transportation page lists a taxi estimate to Port Everglades of $18–$21 as of 2026, and notes that Broward County taxi fares are regulated by law. A private car costs more than that, so the question is what the extra buys you: a driver at arrivals, help with large cruise bags, a fixed fare, and the assurance that someone is waiting if your flight is delayed.
FLL to Port Everglades: modes compared
The table uses the airport's published taxi estimate and describes the other modes by how their cost is set.
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private car (Onroutz.ca) | 25–45 min including meeting | Fixed all-in fare via booker | Driver handles cruise-size bags | Families, groups, tight boarding windows |
| Taxi from the airport stand | 20–50 min including the queue | $18–$21 estimate, regulated (FLL, 2026) | Boot space; large cases may need a van | Couples with two bags |
| Rideshare app | 20–45 min after finding the zone | Surge-priced, shifts with ship-day demand | Depends on vehicle | Short notice |
| Cruise-line or shared shuttle | 45–90 min with stops | Per person, set by the provider | Cruise bags included | Solo travellers who are not time-pressed |
| Hotel shuttle | Depends on hotel loop | Often tied to a hotel stay | Limited | Pre-cruise stay near the airport |
The distance and the real drive time
FLL to Port Everglades is about 5 km (3 mi). Off-peak, the ride takes about 10 minutes from the kerb. On ship day, a better planning range is 15–25 minutes, and during a cluster of morning sailings, closer to 30.
- Quiet days and mid-week afternoons: 10–15 minutes.
- Morning arrivals on Saturdays and Sundays: 20–30 minutes, when the largest ships are in port.
- Disembarkation mornings: the roads feed back into the airport, so allow extra for the return leg.
- Afternoon thunderstorms in summer: can slow the whole area for an hour or more.
The drive itself is rarely the bottleneck. The waits are at the airport kerb, at the terminal drop-off and in the porter queue, and a booked car shortens the first of those.
Where to be at FLL
FLL has four terminals, and the airport lists the taxi and rideshare points by terminal:
- Taxis: lower-level arrivals stands, at the west end of Terminal 1, the east end of Terminal 2, the north end of Terminal 3 and the west end of Terminal 4.
- Rideshare: Terminal 1 uses a temporary pickup area beyond the taxi podium (Zone Z), Terminal 2 uses the GTA-2 area, and Terminals 3 and 4 use the first floor of the southern Palm Garage (Zones A to D).
- Limousines, sedans and vans: designated lower-level curbside areas, with a Ground Transportation Booth in baggage claim.
Your Onroutz.ca driver follows the flight and meets you inside arrivals, or at the kerb on request. A name board, or an alias board for privacy, is available. Waiting is free for 60 minutes after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic one, so a long immigration queue costs nothing extra.
If you are flying from Toronto, note that Toronto Pearson and Billy Bishop both operate US preclearance, so a flight into Fort Lauderdale lands as a domestic arrival: you skip customs on arrival and go straight to baggage.
Timing your flight against embarkation
Cruise lines, not the port, set boarding windows, and your cruise documents state yours. Use these planning rules:
- Land early enough. Many travellers aim for a morning arrival and a ship that boards in the late morning to afternoon. A mid-afternoon landing for a ship that closes boarding late afternoon is a risk.
- Fly in the day before when you can. It takes pressure off both the airline and the transfer.
- Do not count on checked bags arriving quickly. Baggage hall waits vary, so keep a cushion before the boarding cut-off.
- Check the terminal on the cruise documents. Port Everglades has multiple terminals, and the drop-off point differs by ship.
For the ship, give us the cruise line and ship name when you book, plus the sailing date. That lets us choose a pickup time that suits the ship's boarding window and the terminal's approach road.
Disembarkation day: Port Everglades back to FLL
The return leg is where the airline's rules matter. The airport notes in its cruise passenger advisory that during peak cruise travel, airlines at FLL may only check bags up to two hours before a scheduled flight. That cuts the cushion, so book a flight that leaves well after the ship docks, and not for the morning.
- Leave the ship as early as your disembarkation group allows.
- Allow 15–25 minutes for the road, and more when several ships are unloading.
- Pick the car for the first available time after you clear the terminal, not for the time you hope to be out.
- If you have a late flight, consider a daytime stop first, since a multi-leg booking can chain port, lunch and airport on one confirmation.
At the port: terminals, drop-off and bags
Port Everglades is at 1850 Eller Drive, Fort Lauderdale, and its cruise terminals are numbered; the terminal for your ship appears on your cruise documents and changes from one sailing to the next. Give the driver the ship name rather than guessing a terminal from last year's trip. The port's own site links to a map with luggage drop-off and parking, and a Cruise Information section covering arrival and departure.
Two habits make the drop-off smoother. First, keep passports, cruise documents and any medication in a cabin bag, not in a suitcase that goes straight to the ship. Second, label every large bag with your cabin details before the car arrives, since the driver can unload at the kerb but cannot find a lost tag for you.
Hurricane season and other weather
The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from 1 June to 30 November, and Florida ports adjust sailings when a storm threatens. If a sailing changes, tell the desk as soon as you know; the 72-hour, 48-hour and 24-hour cancellation steps are counted from the scheduled pickup, so an early message protects your booking. Summer thunderstorms are more common than hurricanes, and they slow the roads for an hour or two without closing anything.
Pre-cruise hotels and combined bookings
Many passengers stay the night before in Fort Lauderdale or on the beach. That is a different transfer: airport to hotel the day before, hotel to port on sailing morning. Onroutz.ca supports multi-leg itineraries on one booking, so both rides share one confirmation and one invoice.
If you are flying into Miami, the same logic works from there. See Miami Airport to cruise port and Miami International airport transfers. For passengers arriving at Fort Lauderdale but heading south to a Miami hotel or to PortMiami, see Fort Lauderdale Airport to Miami. For other Florida ports, the Port Canaveral page covers the Orlando side, and the cruise transfers hub lists every port we cover.
When the private car wins
The taxi is not a bad option on the short trip. It is regulated, and the stand is easy to find. The case for a booked car is narrower, but it is real:
- Three or more travellers with full cruise luggage. An Executive Sedan takes up to 3 passengers with 2 large and 2 cabin bags, which is tight for a cruise; a Luxury SUV takes up to 6 with 5–6 large bags, and an Executive Sprinter up to 12 with 12 bags.
- Mobility needs. Travellers who need help with distances and kerbs benefit from a driver who assists door to door; mention it when you book.
- Tight windows. A fixed pickup time and a driver tracking your flight remove one source of delay.
- Children. Note the children's ages at booking and the right infant, toddler or booster seat is provided.
- Group sailings. Families and wedding parties can arrive together in one Sprinter or a mini-coach, 20 to 56 seats on request.
Browse the fleet for classes. The exact model is confirmed at booking ("or similar"), and availability of Maybach, Rolls-Royce and stretch limousines is confirmed at booking.
How booking works
- Enter the flight number, date, cruise line, ship name and sailing date in the booker.
- Choose the vehicle class that fits the group and the bags.
- The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup and drop-off before you pay.
- You get one confirmation and one invoice, and the Toronto desk is reachable around the clock.
More than 72 hours' notice means no cancellation charge. At 72 hours or less 10% applies, at 48 hours or less 50%, and at 24 hours or less or a no-show 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup.
Official sources are worth a look before you travel. FLL publishes its ground transportation page and ride share pickup page, and Port Everglades lists cruise information, the ship schedule and parking. For the preclearance rule, see CBP's preclearance page. Our USA hub, transfers hub and airport transfers pages link the other American cities and airports.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Fort Lauderdale airport from Port Everglades?
About 5 km (3 mi). The drive normally takes 10–15 minutes outside busy periods and 20–30 minutes on a ship morning. The distance is short, but the kerb queues at the airport and the terminal drop-off are what stretch a quick hop into half an hour.
How much is a taxi from FLL to Port Everglades?
The airport's own estimate is $18–$21 as of 2026, and taxi fares in Broward County are regulated by law. Fuel surcharges and tip are extra. A private car is priced separately; the booker shows the fixed all-in fare before you pay.
Is there a shuttle from Fort Lauderdale airport to the cruise port?
Several providers run per-person shuttles, and some cruise lines sell transfers. They typically add stops and wait for a full load, so times vary. For a group that wants one pickup at a set time, a private car with a fixed fare is simpler.
Where do I get a rideshare at FLL?
Terminal 1 uses a temporary pickup area beyond the taxi podium (Zone Z); Terminal 2 uses the GTA-2 area; Terminals 3 and 4 use the first floor of the southern Palm Garage, Zones A to D. Drop-offs are on the upper level.
When should my flight land if my ship sails the same day?
Land as early as you can and treat the cruise line's boarding window, not the sailing time, as your deadline. Many travellers fly in the day before for this reason. Allow time for baggage claim, the drive and the terminal queue.
What about the flight home after the cruise?
FLL warns that during peak cruise travel, airlines may only check bags up to two hours before a flight. Book a departure that leaves well after the ship docks, and pre-book the car for the first available time after you leave the terminal.
Can the driver wait if my flight is delayed?
Yes. The flight is tracked, so the pickup follows the actual landing. Waiting is free for 60 minutes after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic one, and the Toronto desk is available around the clock if plans change.
How much should I tip a driver in Florida?
Tipping is customary in the United States and is separate from the fare unless your confirmation says otherwise. A common guide for a chauffeured airport ride is roughly 15 to 20 percent for good service.
