Europe is dense, well connected and expensive to get wrong. A rail ticket is often the smartest way between city centres, but the first and last kilometres, from the arrivals hall to a hotel on a hill, from a station to a ship, or from an airport to an Alpine resort that no train reaches, are where a private car earns its place. Onroutz.ca is a Toronto-based desk that books airport transfers and private transfers across Europe through vetted, licensed and commercially insured local partners, with one confirmation, one invoice and one 24/7 contact. This hub links every European gateway and route we cover, explains how the service works, and sets out the entry rules that matter in 2026.
How do private transfers work in Europe?
You book a pickup and drop-off with Onroutz.ca in Toronto. A vetted, licensed and commercially insured local partner drives, in a vehicle no more than four model years old. Your flight, train or ship arrival is tracked, a name-board meet and greet is available, and the booker shows the fixed all-in fare before you pay.
We do not own cars or offices in Europe, and we do not pretend to. What we own is the booking: the Toronto desk confirms the ride, supports it around the clock, and invoices it, so a multi-country trip does not turn into six confirmations from six companies. Executive Sedan (E-Class, Cadillac or similar; 3 passengers), First Class Sedan (S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar; 3), Luxury SUV (Escalade, Yukon Denali, Suburban or similar; up to 6) and Executive Sprinter (up to 12) are the core classes, with coaches and Maybach, Rolls-Royce or stretch limousine on request, availability confirmed at booking. See the fleet and the airport transfers hub.
European airports we cover
Each airport page compares the train, the bus, the taxi and the booked car with timings, then explains when a private car is worth it.
United Kingdom gateway pages
- London Heathrow: the Heathrow Express reaches Paddington in 15 minutes from Terminals 2 and 3, and the car matters for the second leg across London.
- London Gatwick: the Gatwick Express is 30 minutes to Victoria, and a booked cab suits pre-dawn departures.
- Heathrow to central London and Heathrow to Gatwick cover the two most common road routes.
France, the Benelux and Switzerland
- Paris Charles de Gaulle, Paris Beauvais to Paris and Paris CDG to Disneyland Paris.
- Amsterdam Schiphol: a 17-minute train to Amsterdam Centraal, and a car for canal hotels and onward trips.
- Nice Côte d'Azur, with routes to Cannes, Monaco and Saint-Tropez.
- Alpine routes from Geneva: Chamonix, Courchevel and Méribel, Morzine and Val Thorens.
Italy
- Rome Fiumicino, Venice Marco Polo and Milan Malpensa.
- South of Rome: Naples airport to Sorrento, Naples to the Amalfi Coast and Naples to Positano.
Iberia, Greece and Türkiye
- Barcelona, Málaga, Palma de Mallorca and Lisbon.
- Athens, with the Athens hotel transfers page for city arrivals.
- Istanbul: about 45 km (28 mi) from the old city, where the choice of transfer matters.
Cruise ports, rail stations and hotels
Ships and trains run to fixed times, and a transfer built backwards from the departure is the safest kind. Southampton cruise transfers and Civitavecchia cruise transfers, the port for Rome, plan the pickup around embarkation windows and luggage. For stations, see King's Cross and St Pancras, Milan Centrale and Paris Gare de Lyon. For city hotels, Rome hotel transfers and Athens hotel transfers show arrival points. The wider cruise transfers hub, rail transfers hub and hotel transfers hub list every port, station and city.
Public transport benchmarks at the main gateways
Public transport in Europe is good, and a fair comparison starts there. These are the benchmarks, taken from the airports' and operators' official pages.
| Gateway | Public benchmark to the centre | Where a private car helps |
|---|---|---|
| London Heathrow | Heathrow Express to Paddington, 15 min from Terminals 2 and 3 | Second leg across London, groups, children, late arrivals |
| London Gatwick | Gatwick Express to Victoria, 30 min, twice an hour | Pre-dawn departures, Sussex and Surrey |
| Amsterdam Schiphol | Train to Centraal, about 17 min, eight an hour | Canal hotels, The Hague, Rotterdam |
| Athens | X95 express bus, about 60 min, runs 24 hours; Metro Line 3 | Ferries and cruise ships, steep-street hotels |
| Barcelona | Aerobús runs 24 hours; Metro L9 Sud serves both terminals | Cruise port, Sitges, Costa Dorada |
| Lisbon | Red line metro from the terminal, 06:30 to 01:00 | Alfama, Cascais, Sintra, late arrivals |
| Istanbul | M11 metro to Gayrettepe; 11 Havaist routes | Sultanahmet, Asian side, families |
When the train or metro suits one or two travellers with light bags, take it. When there are three or more of you, children, heavy luggage, a tight cruise embarkation window, a late arrival or a business schedule, book the car.
Entry rules and 2026 changes to know
Europe's rules changed in 2025 and 2026, and the changes affect how long you should allow at the border.
- Schengen short stays. The Government of Canada says Canadians can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area, with passports valid for at least three months beyond planned departure.
- Entry/Exit System (EES). The EU says EES has been fully operational at Schengen borders since 10 April 2026. It records your facial image and fingerprints on entry, and you do not apply in advance.
- ETIAS. The EU says it is scheduled to start in the last quarter of 2026, with the exact date to be announced; applications are not yet open. When it launches, apply only through the official EU website.
- United Kingdom. The UK is outside Schengen. Visitors from many countries need an Electronic Travel Authorisation, which gov.uk says costs £20 and covers up to six months.
- Türkiye. Outside Schengen. The Government of Canada says Canadians need no visa for tourist stays up to 90 days in a 180-day period, with passports valid at least 150 days from entry.
Because border queues can lengthen under new systems, our free waiting time after international landings is 60 minutes, which comfortably covers it. Domestic arrivals get 30 minutes and other pickups 15.
Meet and greet, flight tracking and waiting time
Every airport pickup is tracked against the flight, and train and ship arrivals are tracked too. A name-board meet and greet inside arrivals is available on request, with an alias on the board if you want privacy. Water and phone charging are in most vehicles, and Seats for babies, toddlers and older children are provided when requested at booking.
Road charges, tolls and what a fixed fare includes
Europe's roads carry charges that surprise visitors. London has an £18-a-day Congestion Charge in the central zone, charged on weekdays from 07:00 to 18:00 and on weekends and bank holidays from 12:00 to 18:00, according to Transport for London. Heathrow charges £7 for each entry into its terminal drop-off areas, and Gatwick charges a minimum of £10 for its zones. Portugal's highways mostly charge tolls and Canada warns that international cards are not always accepted. The booker shows a fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay, so these details are ours to manage rather than yours.
Planning a multi-stop European trip, or a day with a driver
A common pattern is a flight into one city, a train between two others, and a flight home from a third, with a ship or a mountain resort in between. A multi-leg itinerary can sit on one booking, with each leg tracked separately, and corporate accounts can be invoiced monthly. A chauffeur can also be hired by the hour for a day of meetings. Discretion is standard: chauffeurs keep trips confidential, and NDAs can be arranged. Onroutz.ca is a transport service, not a security company, so it supplies no armed drivers or bodyguards and coordinates with a client's own security team.
For help choosing between a taxi, an app and a booked car, read airport transfers versus taxis and rideshares. For a name-board welcome, see the airport meet and greet service. Flying out of Canada? Our Toronto hub and Canada hub cover the start of the trip, and the Middle East and Asia-Pacific hubs cover onward legs.
Official sources worth bookmarking
The European Commission explains the differences between EES and ETIAS. The UK government's ETA guidance is the only place to apply for a UK ETA. The Government of Canada publishes advice for Spain, Portugal and Türkiye, among others. Rules change, so confirm them before you travel.
Frequently asked questions
Do you operate your own cars in Europe?
No. Rides are delivered by vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partners, with vehicles no more than four model years old. The Toronto desk books, confirms, supports and invoices every trip, so you hold one confirmation, one invoice and one 24/7 contact.
Does the fixed fare include tolls and road charges?
The booker shows a fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay. Charges on the route, such as tolls and airport drop-off fees, are accounted for in that fare, so you do not watch a meter.
Do Canadians need a visa for Europe in 2026?
Not for short Schengen stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, according to the Government of Canada. ETIAS is scheduled for the last quarter of 2026, and the UK requires an ETA. Check each country's rules before you fly.
What is the EES, and will it slow my arrival?
The Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors with a facial image and fingerprints. It has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. Allow extra time at passport control; our free waiting period after international landings is 60 minutes.
Can I book several European transfers on one booking?
Yes. Multi-leg itineraries, such as airport to hotel, hotel to station and station to ship, can sit on one booking. Each leg is tracked, and a single invoice covers the trip.
Can I hire a car with a driver by the hour in Europe?
Yes. Hourly hire is available for meetings, shopping or a day of sightseeing. Tell us the city, the hours and the number of passengers, and the booker shows the fixed fare before you pay.
Do you arrange child seats?
Yes, on request when you book. Give the ages and weights, and choose a vehicle with room for passengers and seats together.
What is your cancellation policy?
Free cancellation applies with more than 72 hours' notice. At 72 hours or less the charge is 10%, at 48 hours or less 50%, and at 24 hours or less or a no-show 100%, always counted from the scheduled pickup. A convention or big event may come with a different cancellation window, shown on your confirmation.
