Kingston is the Limestone City on the north shore of Lake Ontario, where the lake meets the St. Lawrence River and the Thousand Islands begin. It is about halfway between Toronto and Montreal, and it draws a steady stream of travellers from Pearson: university families, visitors to the prison and fort sites, wedding guests, and people simply passing through toward Ottawa. This page covers the 285 km from Toronto Pearson to Kingston by car and the alternatives, so you can choose the right one for your trip.
What is the best way to get from Toronto Pearson to Kingston?
For most travellers it is a pre-booked private car. Kingston is about 285 km from Pearson on Highway 401, which is toll-free, and the drive takes roughly 2 h 45 to 3 h 15 without transfers. VIA Rail serves Kingston from Toronto Union Station and suits one traveller with light bags, but you must first get from Pearson to Union.
The distance is an important fact. Ottawa Tourism lists Kingston at about 270 km from Toronto, and Pearson is further west than downtown, so from the airport the figure is closer to 285 km. That is more than a taxi run and less than a day trip, which is exactly the range where a fixed-fare private car makes sense. The alternative is a chain: airport to Union Station, then the train, then a ride from the Kingston station to wherever you are staying.
Toronto Pearson to Kingston: every option compared
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private car with chauffeur | About 2 h 45 – 3 h 15, no transfers | Fixed fare via booker | Full cases, boxes, dorm gear | Families, groups, move-ins, late arrivals |
| UP Express plus VIA Rail | Three legs: airport to Union, train, then a ride in Kingston | UP Express adult fare $12.35 as of 2026, plus the VIA fare | Per VIA baggage rules | Solo travellers on a train timetable |
| Intercity coach | Longer, with a transfer from Pearson | Set by the operator | One bag plus a carry-on | Travellers with time to spare |
| Taxi from Pearson | About 2 h 45 – 3 h 15 | Metered, long-distance fares by agreement | Whatever fits | Short-notice only |
| Rental car | About 2 h 45 plus pick-up queue | Rental rate, fuel, Kingston parking | Whatever fits | Touring beyond Kingston |
VIA Rail's Kingston station is at 1800 John Counter Boulevard, and the VIA Rail Kingston page lists a staffed station with a business lounge, car rental, taxis and Uber at the door, City Transit Kingston buses and intercity coach connections. It does not give the travel time from Toronto, so check the VIA schedule for your date. The UP Express is the link between Pearson and Union Station, advertised at 28 minutes.
When the train or a coach is the better choice
If you are alone, you have one bag, you start at Union Station, and the VIA departure fits your plans, the train is a restful way to arrive, and you can work on the way. A coach can suit a traveller with no time pressure. We would rather you choose the best fit than book a car you do not need.
A private car is the better choice in these situations:
- You land at Pearson and do not want to go downtown first. The car starts at the arrivals curb and never enters central Toronto.
- You are moving a student. Boxes, bedding, a mini-fridge and a desk lamp do not travel well on a train. A Luxury SUV or Sprinter does.
- Three or more travel together. One vehicle carries everyone and their luggage.
- You have a ceremony or a meeting. A wedding, convocation or appointment does not wait for a train.
- The destination is not near the station. Fort Henry, a waterfront hotel, a vacation rental or a lake property all need a second leg after the train.
- Children are travelling. Seats for babies, toddlers and older children are provided when requested at booking.
The drive: Highway 401 eastbound
The route is the simplest in Ontario. From Pearson the driver joins Highway 401 eastbound and stays on it past Scarborough, Pickering, Oshawa, Cobourg, Belleville and Napanee to Kingston.
What to know about the road:
- The first 60 km decide the trip. Highway 401 through Toronto and Durham Region can crawl on weekday mornings and late afternoons. After Oshawa it opens up.
- No toll. Highway 401 is toll-free. The Highway 407 ETR runs north of Toronto and can bypass the worst of the city section, and the chauffeur uses it only when the delay justifies it. Our fare is all-in, so you do not pay anything at the booth.
- Peak dates. Friday afternoons, long weekends and the arrival and departure days of the university year bring heavy traffic. Allow extra time and book early.
- Service centres. Rest stops with fuel and food sit along the route, which makes a comfort break easy to schedule.
- Weather. Snow, ice and fog along the lakeshore can change the trip. Ontario 511 shows road conditions, closures and camera views, and we check it before departure.
The same road continues to Ottawa, which makes Kingston the logical halfway stop. Our Toronto to Ottawa page describes the rest of the journey, and the Toronto to Montreal page covers the road beyond.
Where in Kingston we drop you
Kingston is compact, and most drops fall into a few districts.
- Downtown and the waterfront. City Hall, the market, hotels and restaurants along the lake. The City of Kingston is at 216 Ontario Street, and the Visit Kingston information centre is at 209 Ontario Street.
- Queen's University and the University District. Students, staff and parents. The City of Kingston's notices for October 2026 mention a University District safety initiative beginning on 15 October for Queen's Homecoming, so expect busy streets that weekend.
- Kingston Penitentiary. Visit Kingston promotes iconic Kingston Pen tours, and the site is a draw for history visitors.
- The VIA Rail station on John Counter Boulevard. For passengers meeting a train or catching one.
- Fort Henry, Thousand Islands cruises and the Wolfe Island ferry. Attractions on or near the water.
- Beyond the city. Prince Edward County, Gananoque and the Thousand Islands are reachable on the same booking.
If you searched for a Kingston limousine, the same chauffeurs handle weddings, graduations and event arrivals. See the Weddings page and the executive car service page for more.
What is on in Kingston this autumn
Kingston's calendar affects traffic and hotel availability, so it helps to know what is on when you book. According to Visit Kingston and the City of Kingston, October 2026 includes the Wild Art Walk on the Milburn Creek Nature Reserve Trail through the month, the BEES exhibit at The PumpHouse Museum until 31 October, and an aquaculture exhibit at the Great Lakes Museum until 18 October. The City's notices also place Queen's Homecoming in mid-October and a Remembrance Day ceremony at Macdonald Park on 11 November.
Big weekends fill hotels and slow the roads in and out of town. If your trip coincides with one, book the car early, tell the desk the venue, and allow extra time on Highway 401 in both directions.

The Pearson airport page covers other destinations from YYZ, and the airport meet and greet page describes the arrivals handover.
Kingston to Pearson: the return trip
Leaving Kingston for a flight needs planning, because the distance is long enough that a delay costs real time.
- Count back from your flight. The drive is about three hours. Add the time you want at Pearson, plus a margin for Highway 401 traffic.
- Eastbound and westbound peaks. Westbound traffic builds on Sunday afternoons and holiday Mondays as weekend visitors return to the GTA.
- Early flights. For a morning departure from Pearson, plan to stay near the airport the night before, or book a very early car.
- Student move-out days. Expect heavy traffic around university term ends.
Kingston's own airport, YGK, is listed on the City of Kingston's website. If your travel plan involves it, tell the desk and we can plan around it.

How booking and the fixed fare work
Open the booker, choose Pearson as the pickup, enter your Kingston address, the date, the time and the party size. The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay. We do not publish a price table because the fare depends on the Kingston address, the vehicle class, the date and the time. Corporate accounts with monthly invoicing and multi-leg itineraries on one booking are supported, and the 24/7 desk handles changes.
Cancellation: more than 72 hours' notice has no charge; 72 hours or less is 10%; 48 hours or less is 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show is 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup. Major events and conventions sometimes have their own deadline; when they do, it appears on the confirmation. Other Canadian routes are listed on the routes hub and the transfers hub, and the Canada page links the rest. See the FAQ for more.

Is the train a good alternative from Pearson to Kingston?
It can be. You take the UP Express to Union Station, then VIA Rail to Kingston, and then a taxi, bus or rideshare from the station on John Counter Boulevard. It suits one traveller with light bags; a car is better for groups and luggage.
How much does a private car from Pearson to Kingston cost?
The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay. We do not publish a price list, because the figure depends on the Kingston address, vehicle class, date and time.
Can the car stop on the way?
Yes. Add stops in the booker, such as Oshawa, Belleville or Napanee, or tell the desk. Multi-stop trips keep one confirmation and one invoice.

Flight tracking is on. The first hour after an international landing is free waiting time; after a domestic flight it is half an hour. The chauffeur adjusts to your actual arrival time.
