What is the best way to get from Palma airport to your Mallorca resort?

Mallorca has one main airport and resorts in every direction, so the best mode depends on the destination. Palma city is a short bus or taxi ride; the north, east and south-east resorts are 45 to 90 minutes away by road. A pre-booked private car is simplest for any resort, especially with children or heavy luggage.

Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) is the arrival point for almost every visitor to the island. It sits about 8 km east of Palma, close to the bay, and from there the roads fan out to Playa de Palma and the south coast, to Inca and Alcudia in the north, to the south-west and the west, and to the east coast via Manacor.

The island is roughly 100 km across at its widest, but twisting mountain roads and summer traffic make distances feel longer than they look. This guide sets out the distances, the public options, and when a private transfer makes sense. It is part of our Europe network and the main airport transfers hub.

Palma airport at a glance

Aena, the Spanish airport operator, lists bus, taxi, car and vehicle-with-driver options on its Palma page, and has been reorganising the area, including a moved security checkpoint and changes to the taxi-rank position, so signs on the day take priority.

  • Palma city: about 8 km, usually 15 to 25 minutes by road.
  • Playa de Palma and S'Arenal: about 8 to 12 km, 15 to 25 minutes.
  • Magaluf and Palmanova: about 20 to 25 km, 25 to 35 minutes.
  • Port d'Andratx: about 40 km, 40 to 55 minutes.
  • Soller: about 35 to 40 km, 40 to 55 minutes via the tunnel.
  • Port d'Alcudia: about 55 to 60 km, 55 to 75 minutes.
  • Cala d'Or and the south-east: about 60 km, 55 to 75 minutes.
  • Cala Ratjada: about 80 km, 1 h 15 to 1 h 40.

All distances are approximate road figures labelled "about", and times assume normal traffic. Saturday changeover afternoons in July and August are the exception; add 20 to 40 minutes.

How the private pickup works at Palma

Flights are tracked from departure, so an early or late landing moves your chauffeur with it. Free waiting runs to 60 minutes after an international landing and 30 after a domestic one. Flights from the UK, Germany, Canada and the USA are international and get the full hour.

The chauffeur waits in arrivals, with a name board on request, and an alias on the board if you prefer privacy. Luggage is loaded at the terminal door. Most cars have water and phone charging, and seats for children, toddlers and boosters are available when you book. That last point matters on Mallorca, where families make up a large share of arrivals and a seat that fits is not something to leave to a taxi rank.

Bus timings above are from the independent Palma airport guide and the operators; check the current timetable before you go. We do not print fares for public buses because they change and are best read on the day. Ours is never a range: the fixed all-in fare for your pickup, drop-off and vehicle appears in the booker before you pay.

When the bus is the better choice

If you are staying in Palma city, or in S'Arenal and Playa de Palma, the airport bus is a fair choice. The A1 runs on average every 12 to 15 minutes in the day, takes about 20 minutes to Placa d'Espanya, and the stops are directly opposite the arrivals hall, according to the independent Palma airport guide. Paying by contactless card is cheaper than cash.

The island's TIB intercity buses also leave from the airport, with routes to Alcudia and Can Picafort in the north, Camp de Mar in the west via Palmanova and Magaluf, Cala Bona on the east coast, and Campos in the south. If you are travelling light and your hotel is on a main road near a stop, they work. A bus is the cheapest way to cover the 55 to 60 km to Alcudia, though it takes an hour or more.

Where the bus stops being practical is anywhere that requires a change. A finca inland, a hotel above Soller, or a villa outside Pollenca will not be on a route, and a long taxi fare is the usual fallback.

When a private car is the better choice

  • Villas and fincas. Rural addresses are not on bus routes, and some are on unmade tracks. A chauffeur with a booking note and a phone number gets you to the gate.
  • Families. A booked child seat and no changing buses with a sleeping toddler.
  • Groups of three or more. Splitting a car beats buying individual fares, and everyone arrives together.
  • Golf, cycling and sailing kit. Bike boxes, golf bags and kitbags do not fit comfortably into a taxi saloon.
  • Late arrivals. Buses thin out after midnight. A booked car does not.

Soller, the north-west and the mountain road

Soller is on the other side of the Serra de Tramuntana, and the road to it is one of the island's most dramatic. The tunnel has made the journey faster than the old mountain pass, but the final approach and the villages along the coast, including Deia and Valldemossa, rely on narrow, curving roads. These roads carry coaches, hire cars and, in spring and autumn, large numbers of cyclists.

A calm, local driver matters more here than horsepower. We recommend scheduling your pickup outside the busiest midday window and, if you get car sick, sitting in the front. For these routes the First Class Sedan or the Luxury SUV is a more comfortable choice than a mini-coach.

The east, the south-east and the Alcudia side

The east coast has long, easy roads but more distance. Cala Millor and Cala Ratjada are 70 to 80 km from the airport, and Cala d'Or and the southern coves are about 60 km. Alcudia and the north-east bay are 55 to 60 km via the motorway towards Inca.

If you want a private car, give us your hotel name and the booker shows a fixed fare. Add the bay or resort area in your booking notes, as some resort names cover several bays.

Choosing a vehicle for Mallorca

Family arrivals dominate Palma, so size matters. The Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar) and the First Class Sedan (S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar) each take up to 3 passengers, the first with 2 large and 2 cabin bags. A family of five or six, or a group with bicycle bags, wants the Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar) with its 5 to 6 large bags. Villa parties, crews and weddings fill an Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter): 12 passengers, 12 bags. Mini-coaches and coaches seat 20 to 56 and can be requested, as can a Maybach, Rolls-Royce or stretch limousine; availability is confirmed at booking, and every model is "or similar".

Our fleet page lists every class. For bigger events, such as a wedding or a corporate retreat, see how we handle event transport.

When Mallorca is busiest

  • Saturdays in summer. Hotel and villa changeovers send hundreds of cars onto the same roads between 2 pm and 8 pm. Arrivals that fall in that window deserve a longer margin.
  • Mid-July to late August. Holiday traffic on the Ma-19 and the motorway towards Alcudia builds in the late afternoon.
  • Sunday mornings in cycling season. Group rides share the main roads, and drivers slow for them.
  • Shoulder season. Quieter roads and cooler weather, and the easiest time for a long trip.

Your chauffeur plans for these patterns. If you have a dinner reservation or a yacht boarding time on the day you land, give us the time and we build the pickup around it.

How the Mallorca transfer is delivered

In the Balearics the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner. Onroutz.ca books and confirms it from Toronto, supports you while it runs and invoices it afterwards: one booking, one invoice, one 24/7 contact. Partner vehicles are no more than 4 model years old (7 for Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach). We do not own cars or offices on Mallorca.

Entry rules for Spain

Mallorca is in Spain, which is in the Schengen Area; US and Canadian visitors can usually stay a short time without a visa. The EU is introducing an Entry/Exit System to register non-EU travellers at the border, along with the ETIAS pre-travel authorisation. Procedures and dates have shifted, so check the official page at travel-europe.europa.eu before you fly. Allow for slower passport control in peak season.

More transfers around Spain and the Mediterranean

Mallorca pairs well with the mainland coast. See our Barcelona airport and Malaga airport pages, and the Athens page for the eastern Mediterranean. For hotels and resorts, browse hotel transfers and resort transfers. Official airport information is on Aena's Palma page, and bus details are summarised in the independent Palma airport guide.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Palma airport from the city centre?

About 8 km. The drive takes 15 to 25 minutes depending on traffic. The EMT A1 bus runs to Placa d'Espanya in around 20 minutes, and the bus stops are directly opposite the arrivals hall. Allow a little longer at weekends and on summer Saturday changeover afternoons.

How long does a transfer from Palma airport to Alcudia take?

About 55 to 60 km, usually 55 to 75 minutes by road. The TIB A32 bus takes around an hour to Port d'Alcudia and longer to Can Picafort. A private car goes direct to your hotel without intermediate stops. A booked car can also include a supermarket stop on the way if you arrange it at booking.

How long does it take to get from Palma airport to Soller?

About 35 to 40 km, usually 40 to 55 minutes via the tunnel. The final approach to the villages along the coast is on narrow, winding roads, so allow extra time if you are staying in Deia or Valldemossa. A calm daytime pickup is easier on that road than a late-night one.

Is there a train from Palma airport?

No. The airport is served by buses and taxis. Buses run to Palma, where the main interchange at Placa d'Espanya connects with the island's trains and intercity buses. For anywhere else, a taxi or private transfer is the realistic option.

How much is a taxi from Palma airport to my hotel?

Taxis are metered, so the fare depends on distance, time of day and luggage. Longer trips to the north and east cost far more than a ride into Palma. For a fixed fare in advance, the booker shows ours for your exact pickup and drop-off before you pay.

Can you take a group or a wedding party?

Yes. An Executive Sprinter carries up to 12 passengers with 12 bags, and mini-coaches and coaches of 20 to 56 seats are available on request. Multi-leg bookings can coordinate several flights on one confirmation and one invoice. Tell us each flight number and we group the pickups into one plan.

Do you provide child seats at Palma airport?

Yes. Seats for children, toddlers and boosters are added at booking, so give us each child's age and weight and the right one will already be fitted when the car arrives. Tell us about prams and strollers too, so the vehicle has room for them.
